Apparently, the third time’s the charm. After three years, Communities in Bloom has received top recognition: five blooms. In 2013, Greater Napanee’s CIB received three blooms for their first year back participating in the contest. The next year it was just a few points shy of five blooms, landing the municipality a four-bloom status. This year, all the hard work — the hours pulling weeds, transplanting perennials, digging up and replanting bulbs, and carefully arranging annuals for downtown planters — has paid off. “We were hoping for five blooms. We knew that last year we were missing five blooms by not very much, it was close last year. We had some pretty tough judges this year, I thought, that were seasoned and experienced… they knew their stuff so we’re pretty pleased,” said Pam McCracken, CIB member. “To get into the five bloom category you have to get more than 82 per cent and we have 83.7 per

From Napanee and L&A County, last Sunday’s total eclipse of the full Moon was mostly clouded out. Yarker astronomer and SkyNews magazine editor Terence Dickinson, however, was persistent in waiting for the right moment to see it and to capture it on camera. Dickinson says the red colour is caused by sunlight spilling around the edge of the Earth — in effect bathing the Moon with the reddish glow from millions of sunsets. The eclipse was a rare combination of three events: an alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon that makes the eclipse possible, the so-called ‘supermoon’ which takes place when the Moon is simultaneously at its nearest point in its orbit around the Earth, as well as this year’s traditional annual SEE BLOOMS | PAGE 2 > Harvest Moon. The next total lunar eclipse visible from eastern Ontario is in 2019.

BLOOMS | Still room for improvement, despite rating: organizers tion for heritage. “They saw that curbs were clean and residences and commercial businesses took care,” said McCracken, adding that the judges were also impressed with the rich heritage in Greater Napanee. “They were very impressed with the heritage of the community and brought it to our attention that they wanted to see us be recognized for our heritage conservation. So that was a really nice thing to hear, especially with all the work that the heritage committees do,” said Kathy Medd, another member of CIB. In 2014, Greater Napanee received recognition for community involvement and in 2013 it was to highlight an impressive waterfront. However, McCracken said there is more to CIB than pretty floral planters and gardens, which is why Greater Napanee struggles in some categories.

McCracken said the widespread community involvement really impressed this year’s judges. “They mentioned that we have great collaboration between our public works department, other town staff, the education side at the school, the ‘Veggies in the Village’ and community garden projects. We have support from the Heritage and Horticultural Society, the Downtown BIA, and individual residents and commercial — all those are key to get the five blooms,” said McCracken. On top of the five blooms award, Greater Napanee was also recognized with a tidiness award, with special men-

and waste treatment systems are some aspects CIB judges really look into, which can hurt the municipality when it comes to points because many of those programs are run by the municipality and are very costly. Greater Napanee received 837 points out of a possible 1,000 from six cate-
lin. “What they recommended we work on is recycling, yard waste, looking at wild parsnip and how to deal with that, and the phragmites, which is an invasive swamp plant. It sucks the life out of everything.” Moving forward, the plan is to sustain ongoing projects and improve on what CIB already has in place. “We’re looking to maintain for next year. We’re not taking on any new projects but we’ll continue to think about new projects,” said Medd. “We’ve got great volunteers that are willing to continue on with (our adopted gardens), we have our garden… we’re continuing with our fundraising and maybe next year we’ll want to identify another larger project we want to work towards.” Timlin said the municipality has been working toward operating more efficiently with the installation of LED lights and improving town buildings, which it plans to continue to improve upon next year.

3RD ANNUAL PLANT SWAP

Organizers of Greater Napanee’s first-ever Culture Days say they’re happy with how their inaugural event came together. Musicians, artists and vendors stretched along Dundas Street, up to Town Hall, along the river and up to the golf course. Musicians peppered the streets with live music, while local business owners opened their doors to host open houses for local artists. Aubrey Reeves, executive director for Ontario Culture Days, based out of Toronto, visited Greater Napanee’s Culture Days on the weekend and was very impressed with what Napanee had to offer. “I’ve never been to Napanee before. It’s lovely and it’s a beautiful day, with the riverside. There’s a beautiful, historic main street area, it’s very nice,” she said. “There is a lovely mix of (performances) and visual arts. The emphasis is on getting to meet the people who are producing the work and finding out how they do stuff… which gets at the heart at what Culture Days is all about – learning directly from people who are actively producing or participating in art about how they do the stuff they do and to try it out for yourself,” Reeves added. One of her favourite aspects was the Sir John A. MacDonald wool sculpture on display at Town Hall. Artist Gesina LairdBuchanan took three months to finish the project. “The life-sized Sir John A MacDoanld is incredible. He’s actually kind of spooky how realistic he is. The artist said she keeps him by her fireside in her house,” said Reeves. Laird-Buchanan finished the sculpture in June and said some days she would work from 8 a.m. until midnight on it. “I was just so inspired that I just kept going and going and going. Once I got into it, I just couldn’t stop myself,” she said. “It’s the

She had never made anything from wool as large as the lifesized Sir John A MacDonald she recently finished. It took 500 hours of work, eight sheep and with a little help with some wire and a used suit to match the decade; Sir John A MacDonald was complete. “There’s wire in his back because I thought Sir John A needed a good, strong, backbone. And wire in his hands so he can grasp things,” said LairdBuchanan. Just outside of Town Hall, two picnic tables were on display for artists and children to paint. These picnic tables will help to bring a splash of colour to Greater Napanee’s parks, explained Kelly Schermerhorn, one of the Culture Days organizers. She added that she is thrilled at how quickly Culture Days caught on in the community. “Greater Napanee’s first Culture Days weekend exceeded the committee’s expectations. Originally we were starting to plan for a handful of events and then it grew to over 40 events. It was excellent to see artists, organizations, businesses and the community really wanting to be involved. There were so many won-

derful activities planned,” said Schermerhorn. Aubrey Reeves said that the City of Kingston’s Culture Days had about 60 events planned and for Napanee, with a much smaller population, to have 40 in its first year is impressive. Across the province there were 1,590 free Culture Days events planned. “Napanee is definitely on the right track — a very strong showing for its first year out. Not only has Napanee produced a whole bunch of activities, but it’s produced a map guide, got out there with marketing and promotion materials, balloons at every activity so everything is well marked and well signed, and it has reached out to the media — so it’s a (good) showing for its first year,” said Reeves.

Greater Napanee gets top marks For the past few years, my wife and I have been hosting a boating cruise from Prince Edward County to Conservation Park in Napanee. This event includes 1020 boats and upwards of 50 people arriving by car. On every occasion, your mayor Gord Schermerhorn has made a point of greeting the boaters, and your recreation department workers
have arranged tables, cleaned the gazebo and prepared the site. This has meant a great deal to all participants and has made everyone feel very welcome. Coming from Picton, where we do not have such a waterfront facility, I can assure you that it is a true treasure! As I sat on my boat on Labour Day weekend for my
third trip to Napanee this season, I saw the wall full of vessels. Your beautiful and well-maintained park not only benefits us, the boaters, but also bring commerce to your local businesses. We enjoy the restaurants and variety of shops. Everyone gains. Congratulations! Del Fisher, Picton

Staff picks: The Stranger On The Train Chantell of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries’ Napanee Branch recently enjoyed The Stranger on the Train by Abbie Taylor, which she suggests for readers “looking for that next great psychological thriller”. According to Chantell, “this book has it all: suspense, a gripping plot and a twisted ending that will keep you wanting more.” “Emma Turner is a struggling single mother of a thirteen month old boy named Ritchie, who she wishes would sometimes just disappear. With no close friends or family around to help her, Emma isolates herself and becomes depressed. One evening
upon returning home, the unthinkable happens and one simple distraction becomes Emma’s worst nightmare. The subway, in which Emma uses to travel, closes its doors leaving her son alone Coles’ on the train and Emma left standing on the platform. Emma, with luck on her side, is able to locate her son at the next station and finds her son in the care of a sympathetic older woman. Emma, desperate for some adult interaction, lets her guard down and accepts the woman’s offering of help. Before Emma can realize
what is happening, her son once again has disappeared and the helpful woman is nowhere to be seen. With no witnesses, the police are reluctant to help, coming to their own conclusion that Ritchie Notes never existed and then assuming that Emma had harmed her own child. Emma then takes matters into her own hands and sets out on her own search, prepared to go to unimaginable lengths to find her son and to prove to everyone she is not what they think of her. “The Stranger on the Train is guaranteed to take

Rugs can complete a room There is nothing more than I love to finish off a room by adding a warm, colourful rug to a space. Shopping for clients to find the perfect rug for their room is sometimes a challenging feat, but when you do find the ideal rug, it is rewarding to see the hard work come together in a stylish home interior. There are so many notable benefits of rugs; it may be hard to pick one feature over the others. Beauty Today, an area rug is more than just a way to keep the floor warm. It is a sense of style. Area rugs are a great way to personalize your home. They add colour and artistic expression, whether you want it to be subdued or a little attention grabbing. Area rugs help to define the mood or character of a room. In order to choose the right area rug, you need to look through the selection and decide on one that makes you feel happy, calm, relaxed, and warm. Area rugs are made from different materials and come in an array of sizes including oval, rectangle, octagon, square and my favorite the round rugs. You can choose an area rug that will blend in with almost any decor. If you are unsure of the colour, you can always choose a neutral colour to play it safe. Neutral colours help to bring balance to a room and do not attract a lot of attention.

n Incumbent Progressive Conservative MP for Prince Edward-Lennox fended off a challenge for the local Tory nod for the upcoming federal election. Alkenbrack earned more votes than his competition, Picton Mayor and local industrialist Harvey J. MacFarland, during the riding associations’ nomination convention in Napanee. In a speech after all the votes had been cast, Alkenbrack said that, as the candidate, he’d work to put a Conservative government back in Ottawa and make John Diefenbaker Prime Minister of Canada once again. n While the Conservatives had their candidate, the local Liberals had yet to select someone to carry their banner. Heading into the nomination meeting, two men had thrown their hats into the ring: Picton-based physician Dr. Lionel Dockrill and Napanee businessperson Lloyd D. Woolsey. Harry Hays, the Minister of Agriculture in the incumbent Liberal government of Lester B. Pearson, would be the keynote speaker at the meeting.

your feet. The last thing you need is to have cold feet too. Rugs can also give a warm, cozy, and inviting feeling for you and your guests. The material that the rug is made from will determine how soft it is. Some materials used in making rugs include bamboo, cotton, jute, wool and sea grass. Sound Reduction Noise is more bothersome when there are too many hard surfaces in a room, especially when things like radios, stereos, televisions, and telephones are added to the mix. Area rugs help to absorb and reduce noise, whether in the home or office. Also, noise between floors in a house or apartment building may be reduced with area rugs. Wool area rugs are great at reducing noise in a room. If you have a game room, placing an area rug down on the floor will help reduce the noises from the game when the door is shut. You can also use an area rug in your office if you don’t want to have a lot of
background noise. Safety When used with a rug pad, area rugs provide a stable and non-slick walking surface that helps to protect against injury from impact if someone falls. This can be important if there are young children or seniors in the home. Area rugs can also protect against unwanted furniture movement when used under tables, chairs and sofas. You’ll appreciate that aspect if you’ve ever had a chair slide on a hardwood floor as you were sitting down. Area rugs offer all these great benefits. Now it’s finding the right rug for you in the design and colour to suit your style and décor. n In spite of a 36-hour marathon negotiating session between the Lennox and Addington County Board of Education and local members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, a contract was still proving elusive. The two sides had been negotiating offand-on for two years in hopes of coming to a settlement. Neither side, however, was discussing the details of the negotiations with the media, giving a consistent ‘no comment’ to questions relating to the progress of the talks. L&A was one of only four districts across the province that hadn’t secured a contract for the 1979-1980 school year. Almost a year earlier, provincial ‘fact finder’ Alan Harries recommended a 6.5 per cent increase for local secondary school teachers. He also laid the blame for the impasse at the feet of both the school board and the teachers’ union. n An Enterprise man was said to be in good condition after losing his hand and part of his arm in a hunting accident on the weekend. According to police, the man was hunting partridge in Sheffield Township when he lost his balance and fell. His 12-guage shotgun discharged as he tumbled.

MBQ celebrates restoration of historic chapel BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
Christ Church, Chapel Royal of the Mohawk, was built not only as a place of worship, but as a symbol of the Crown’s military alliance with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. Thanks to significant upgrading and restoration work, that link appears to be as strong as ever. On Thursday, the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte opened up the 172year-old chapel to the public to thank those who had contributed to the restoration project, and to give them a chance to see the end result of ambitious overhaul. The open house also included a ribbon cutting involving the descendants of veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars. One of those descendants included Betty Bardy, whose father, James, fought at Vimy Ridge, where he was twice wounded. Although she’s been living in the U.S. for 65 years, the church was central for her and her family when she was growing up. “I was
when it was being built with Mohawk labour.” The restoration was made possible through contributions from the federal government, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, as well as a number of corporate sponsors and donations from the public. The chapel, a consecrated Anglican site of worship, is no longer home to regular Sunday services; now owned by the MBQ, the chapel is used by different faith communities and community groups as a meeting place. It’s also used to help inform the public about the Mohawk people and their contributions to Canada’s history. The church is one of only six royal chapels located outside of Great Britain, and has been the recipient of many Seth DuChene-Staff gifts from the Crown over the Flanked by members of the chapel’s restoration committee, three descendants of Tyendinaga war vet- years, including communion erans cut the ribbon at Christ Church, Chapel Royal of the Mohawk, on Thursday. Tyendinaga filmmaker brings doc to film festival Candace Maracle’s The Grandfather of All Treaties to screen at imagiNATIVE this month
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
YENDINAGA film maker Candace Maracle’s latest documentary, The Grandfather of All Treaties, is earning international recognition. Her work was recently named as an official selection at the 16th annual imagiNATIVE Film and Media Art Festival, which runs Oct. 14-18 in Toronto. The one-hour documentary focuses on the two row wampum, a stitched together belt which symbolizes the

co-existence between settlers and the First Nations. Featuring interviews with indigenous people, the narrative takes an in-depth look at the first agreement reached between Europeans (specifically the Dutch) and the First Nations. The documentary takes a close look at the treaty and examines the Indigenous response to the broken agreement. The treaty was recorded by stitching together a belt that consists of two lines of purple spaced between three lines of white. The white represents the river of

life while the purple represents the First Nations and the Europeans. It’s meant to symbolize that though they will live side-by-side, neither shall cross or interfere with the other. “The idea came about when I was learning more about the wampum belt,” Maracle said of her inspiration to film the documentary. “I’ve always known about them, they’re kind of entrenched in our culture but what I found beautiful about this was the spirit of intent… I found the symbolism and metaphor that they stood for to be very beauti-

ful and something very integral to our culture. As a journalist I wanted kind of that newsy hook. Last year they commemorated it being the 400th anniversary of the Two Row Wampum, which is the title of my film the grandfather of all treaties, which we consider to be an important diplomatic instrument in First Nations history that set basically the tone with how they were to proceed sharing this land.” The agreement was made in 1613 and would go on to form the basis of several other treaties that would

be established between First Nations and European and North American governments. “I think anything that incites discussion, whether it’s what I intended or not, but is enough to get people talking, is an excellent goal,” Maracle says of her hopes for the impact the film will have on the audience. “I make these films for our community because I want us and youth to understand how empowered we are in our culture. But also I think too when I make these films I’m preaching to the choir. I want non-Indigenous people to understand the benefits to maintaining our culture and how important that is.” Maracle’s film will be screened on Oct. 17 at 2:45 p.m. at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Bell Lightbox. It will run as part of the imganiNATIVE Film and Media Festival, which is considered one of the world’s most prestigious
Indigenous arts festivals. Her film will be distributed through www.vtape.org. Earning national acclaim is nothing new for Maracle, who has earned earned awards for her other documentary The Creators Game: The Quest for Gold and the Fight for Nationhood. She has also reported for CBC Radio and APTN’s National News. Though she expects to be busy following the screening of her latest film, she is already working on her next documentary. Due out next year, it will focus on three generations of Iroquois basket makers. Maracle won’t be the only resident of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory at the festival. Local visual artist Jackson 2Bears’ work will be showcased in an exhibition titled For This Land. For more on the film festival visit www.imaginative.org.

Walking For Claire
NDSS to head to Vimy in 2017 Students to take in 100th anniversary of landmark battle BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Next year’s Napanee District Secondary School trip is centered on the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and the history of World War One. Francine LeBlanc, an NDSS teacher organizing next year’s trip, said the 12day trip is being offered at a discounted rate until the end of the month. The trip is open to current NDSS students and Grade 8 students who will be attending NDSS in 2017. “Next year is the 100th anniversary celebration of Vimy Ridge. What they’re doing is they’re bringing as many Canadian students as possible to participate in the celebration of Vimy Ridge, said LeBlanc. “We will also be going to the Palace of Versailles, which is where treaty of WWI was signed, which led to WWII. LeBlanc, who has been to Vimy Ridge a number of times, said it’s a life changing sight and this trip is a “once in a lifetime opportunity for NDSS students. “The monument is just mesmerizing. It’s just so amazing. It has all the soldiers that they know of their names written on it, all the way around it. It’s just absolutely amazing. It’s to signify all of the soldiers that fought and died for our freedom, LeBlanc explained about Vimy Ridge. “We’re going to London,

France and Belgium and the celebration at Vimy Ridge. We’re visiting many war sites, cemeteries, we’re going to go into the trenches where some of our ancestors were in, we’re going to Eiffel Tower, we’re going to see the changing of the guard, so it’s going to be a full program of World War One, plus other sites along the way, LeBlanc said. The trip is planned for Easter of 2017, April 6-17, so students will only miss five days of school. There are 42 seats available for the trip. The trip will begin in Belgium in the town of Bruges. The next three days will include a number of historic sights in the Vimy region, including the Essex Farm where Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCraw wrote ‘In Flanders Fields,’ the Memorial Museum Passchendaele, the Vimy 100th anniversary ceremony, and exploring in the French city of Arras. The next three days students will explore Paris, which will include a stop at the Louvre Museum, the Eiffel Tower, and a tour of Versailles before crossing the English Channel by ferry. The last few days will be spent in London where they will visit the Imperial War Museum, the Tower of London, and more. EF Tours is arranging the trip and is offering a discounted price until Oct. 30 of this year. For more information, contact LeBlanc at leblancf@limestone.on.ca.

Winnipeg trio latest in Tamworth concert series
BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Winnipeg folk trio Sweet Alibi will be performing in Tamworth later this month to give a sneak peak at their newest album to be released this November. Sweet Alibi is made up of Jess Rae Ayre who plays harmonica, Amber Quesnel who plays ukulele, and Michelle Anderson on banjo. All three women play guitar and sing, which makes for beautiful harmonies. “We have a mix of danceable stuff and as well we have some down tempo songs that are more personal and heartfelt,” said Ayre. Sweet Alibi plays many different genres, ranging from folk, country, roots and pop. Sweet Alibi has already released two albums, one of which won them a Western Community and Music Award for Roots Group of the Year; their third album will be released next month. “We just finished recording a new CD, Walking in the Dark. We’ll be playing a few tunes off that to get people excited about it, it’s being released in November but we’re hoping to have a few exclusive copies to give out at that show,” said Ayre. “Walking in the Dark is a melodically rewarding explo-
ration of relationships, heartache, loss of loved ones and the search for balance when living life on the road. Sweet Alibi’s powerhouse vocal harmonies and memorable songs have never been stronger,” according to their website. The trio has been compared to artists like Mumford and Sons and the Supremes and is known for its harmonies and genuine lyrics. Ayre said they also like to dabble with playful, fun lyrics. “We’ve got a song called ‘Deep’ that’s really fun. It’s got some upbeat tempo and it’s about mosquitoes and getting eaten alive; it’s about the Winnipeg vibe, wherever we go that’s kind of what Winnipeg is known for: cold winters and thousands of mosquitoes,” said Ayre, adding that ‘Deep’ is a fanfavourite and is likely to be played in Tamworth. “We also like to play ‘I’ll Wait’, it was on the CBC national chart last year, and it’s pretty cool to see people singing along in the audience,” Ayre added. Sweet Alibi has been playing together since 2009, when Quesnel moved to Winnipeg from Ontario, and met Ayre and Anderson. Since then, the group has garnered a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year at

Jets thump Raiders, hand them first loss Coach Hartwick calls for better effort
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
osing that first game of a new season is never fun but for the Napanee Raiders on Friday night, it was downright miserable. The high-octane offense of the Amherstview Jets humbled the home team Raiders with an easy 8-2 victory. The Jets scored four times before the Raiders got their first and then sealed the victory with four more unanswered tallies in the third period. Despite the lopsided final score, the Jets only struck only once in the opening frame and were outshot 17-9 by the home side. “Although we outshot them in the first I still don't think we got off to the start we should have,” said Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick. “I don’t think we
L
were skating well even though we had the shots. There were a few rebounds there but I don't think the quality was really there.” Wyatt Crampton opened the scoring at the 12:52 mark of the first. In the second the Jets continued to pour it on as Jody Mayer and Brett Yake each potted a goal in the opening five minutes. Zach Maciel tacked on one more before the Raiders finally had a response with a goal off the stick of Cullen Hinds. Zach Knapp-Hermer added a power-play goal two minutes late to cut the deficit to 4-2 and for a time it looked like the Raiders may make a game of it. All hope of a comeback was quickly squashed in the third as Mayer, Maciel, Dawson Chard and Crampton each fired home a goal to ice the victory. Tomo Mikuljan took the loss, allowing all eight goals while stopping 17. Amherstview's Adam Redgate earned the victory, stopping 31 of 33. “I was quite disappointed with the effort we got,” Hartwick said of his team.
Field Hockey Hawks
Napanee had its share of chances to claw its way back into the game before it got out of hand but went just 1-7 on the power-play. “We did have some good looks in the second on the power-play,” said Hartwick. “I didn’t like our power-play in the third. We had some good looks to score but unfortunately we were just standing around and watching guys battle for pucks instead of coming in and becoming involved.” If there’s any comfort to take in an 8-2 loss, the Raiders could find some in the fact that coming into the game the Jets had pasted the Picton Pirates by that same 8-2 score. On Sunday the Jets offense was finally curbed a little as they lost 32 in overtime at home to the Port Hope Panthers. With Friday’s loss the Raiders are now 2-1 on the season, placing them tied for second with the Jetswith still 37 games to go. Jake Morrow’s interception with two minutes left to go in Wednesday’s KASSAA senior football season opener sealed a thrilling 13-10 upset win for the home town NDSS Golden Hawks over the Sydenham Golden Eagles. Snapping the ball from deep inside their own territory, the Golden Eagles tried in desperation for a long open field pass. Had Morrow not been there to snatch it out of the air, their plan just may have worked as the ball was on target to fall into the open arms of a receiver. Instead the turn over allowed the Hawks to run the clock and secure their first win of the season. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Hawks head
Sydenham opened the scoring early in the second quarter, taking advantage of an NDSS turn over. Rather than get discouraged the Hawks responded in a big way, scoring a pair of touchdowns to carry a lead into halftime. The first came from the one yard line when Hawks quarterback Nic Nieman handed off to Liam Maracle who scrambled to find an open space and dive through the wall of Sydenham defenders. Ryan Weaver scored the go ahead touchdown, returning a midfield punt to put NDSS up 13-7. “Ryan Weaver with the huge kick return just gave Adam Prudhomme-Staff the guys confidence at the Colsen Bertrand of the NDSS Golden Hawks half,” said Bowen. “To go attempts to gain some ground during Wednes- into the half (with the lead) is huge. A Curtis Lambert interception and a fumble recovery from Nieman helped stymie the Golden Eagles’ offense long enough to secure the victory. Bowen credited the work of defensive coach Art Laramie for getting the defensive line ready for the game. “Last year we didn’t get a home win,” Bowen said of NDSS’ football program. “Every game we won as a junior was an away game and the seniors unfortunately didn’t get a win. oftball Napanee took time to reflect on another successful season last Thursday as they held their annual awards banquet at the Napanee Lion’s Hall. It was a year with several highlights that included a gold and silver at the Eastern Canadians, a bronze at Nationals, two provincial championships and four provincial finalists. They also fielded two national teams in the U21 championship-one as host and defending champions while the other qualified at an eliminations tournament. As usual, the event was well supported by the town and earned rave reviews from Softball Canada’s representatives. All told they fielded 15 teams-10 boys and five girls. They also hosted two major tournaments this summer in the U14 Peewee Eliminations as well as the U21 Junior Men’s Canadian

Crunch wrap up exhibition play, set for regular season Beaver Sports
he Peewee Crunch completed exhibition play this past weekend facing Peterborough Ice Kats on Saturday in Peterborough. The Crunch played a strong team game while finding the back of the net were Mackenzie Duttle and Leah Carscallen. Up by two going into the third the Crunch were unable to hold the lead ending the game in a tie. On Sunday the Crunch hosted the Kingston Ice Wolves. Down by two going into the third period the Crunch continued to battle. Carscallen again found the back of the net with help from Hailey Thompson and Emma Granger, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as the Napanee girls fell 2-1 to the Ice Wolves.
T
Monday’s play in Belleville found the girls facing a strong Bearcats team. In the first Duttle stretched the twine with assists from Saige Pearson and Nikki Weese. The Bearcats were also able to find the back of the net making it a 1-1 game after the first, with a scoreless second and third period they settled for a tie to end their tune up exhibition play. This upcoming weekend the Crunch will start regular season play with an away game on Saturday and playing at home Sunday at 3:00 p.m. n The Napanee Atom Crunch headed out of town for the Oshawa Girls Fall Classic Tournament two weeks ago and brought back the gold. Mackenzie Tyner found the back of the net in
Game 1, with an assist from Annika Moore to secure the win. Game 2 was a hard fought battle for a 2-2 tie. Both goals came from Kristen Sutton with an assist by Lila Pringle. In Game 3 the Crunch took home another win, with a close 3-2 game courtesy two goals from Sutton and the other from Tyner, assisted by Jaidyn Manion and Molly Dafoe. In Game 4 it was another 2-0 win for the crunch with goals from Sutton and Pringle and each girl assisting each other. The girls showed up to the semifinal early Sunday morning full of steam and took the 2-0 win, securing their spot in the finals on the strength of goals from Sutton and Dafoe. The championship game started off at a fast pace
RAIDERS | Travel to Picton tonight CONTINUED FROM PAGE 18 The rare six days off between games comes at a good time for the Raiders as they look to address a couple of areas of concern after their first three games. In each game they’ve fallen behind early and relied on
two late game rallies to steal victories in their first two matches. That’s not a habit they want to fall into. “We need to move forward,” said Hartwick. “We need to learn from it. It’s disappointing. I’m concerned with the compete level. I don’t know if guys
were taking things for granted in the first two wins but I don’t think they were complete wins. We can’t sit back and then all of a sudden realize we need to get going. That definitely caught up with us. It will be a wake up call for the guys but we will rebound.”
with two goals from Sutton in the first minute of play. The girls never looked back and took the championship title with a 6-0 win. They also got goals from Manion and Tyner and an assist by Claire McConnell. Crunch goalie Keyra Herrington played phenomenal throughout the tournament with the help of the strong and consistent defense. The Atoms start regular season play this weekend
with an away game on Saturday and facing Ennismore at home Sunday at 2:00 p.m. n The Napanee Peewee AE Stars clinched their first victory in their season opener at the SPC Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Ennismore Eagles. Bailey Cook-Martin assisted by Austin Catena was the first of the Stars to find the back of the net. Connor Wiltshire assisted by Logan Lalonde success-
fully added to the scoreboard in the second period. The Eagles came back to score one in a scrum in front of the Stars net in the third but the Stars were quick to answer back with a third goal by Ethan Martin assisted by Connor Wiltshire and Jake Reid securing the win. Nathaniel Cinnamon went the distance, standing tall between the pipes as the loan net-minder in Game 1 making timely and crucial saves.

‘Once a 97-pound weakling‌’
Glen R. Goodhand
wrote a fitness course, and the two went into business together. About that time a friend told him he resembled the statue of Atlas on the top of a Coney Island hotel, so in 1922 he officially changed his name to Charles Atlas. He quickly became the most famous strong man of his day. He advertised incessantly. Comic books and men’s magazines featured his repetitious appeals to ‘make a new man out of you.’ One of the comeons challenged the reader: ‘Would you mail this coupon

to get a body like mine?’ There was always a strategicallyplaced image of himself — after all, the best ‘proof of the pudding is in the eating.’ His promotions followed a changeless routine. In comic book style a scrawny guy, accompanied by his gal, is the victim of a bully, who insults his physique and embarrasses him — usually both verbally and physically. A favourite featured ‘Mac’ sitting with his girlfriend on a beach, and having sand kicked in their faces by a cool dude. Sick of being pushed around, he orders the Charles Atlas course. Months later the venue is the same. But this time the sand-kicking incident prompts the refurbished man to punch out the creep, get his girl back, and gain the admiration of everyone who witnessed the conflict. The scenes varied — from a dance floor to a circus — but the story line was consistent. Legend had it that these ‘adventures’ were based on Atlas’ own experiences. The course was outlined in a ‘free’ book. But the pamphlet was merely a compilation of testimonies from transformed he-men. The ‘free’ offer actually translated into $35.

TransCanada is currently constructing the Napanee Generating Station (NGS) on Highway 33, just east of the County Road 21. Construction activities will bring some temporary traffic delays on Highway 33 mainly between the Lafarge Bath Cement Plant and the NGS site as large equipment is delivered to site. The equipment will be accompanied by police escorts in front and behind the convoys. Beginning in late September and extending though to mid-December, intermittent traffic delays are expected on Highway 33, in both directions, between the Lafarge Bath Cement Plant and the NGS site, just east of County Road 21 (approximately 3km). The traffic delays will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The deliveries will be restricted during school bus travel times.
Your safety is important to TransCanada, and we appreciate your cooperation and patience and encourage you to plan your travel accordingly. If you have any questions please contact Peter Webster at 613.352.7304. For additional information about the Napanee Generating Station please visit www.napaneegs.com.

GNES stresses importance of smoke alarms Firefighters to visit schools next week BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
hen it comes to placing smoke alarms in the home, location plays a huge role that could ultimately mean the difference between safely escaping a fire or not. That’s why during next week’s nation-wide Fire Prevention Week, experts are encouraging home owners to make sure they have working smoke alarms outside of every bedroom. Using the slogan of 'hear the beep where you sleep', they're promoting the importance of working smoke alarms near sleeping areas. “They’re asking everyone to not only have a smoke alarm, but to make sure you can hear it in all bedrooms, for instance if the door is shut,” said Randy Cook, public fire educator with Greater Napanee Emergency Services. “Or, if the smoke alarm is located in the hallway between the bedroom, make sure you can hear it.” Because a home fire isn’t limited to the daytime, Cook says it’s vital to make sure the alarm can be heard when everyone in the home is sleeping. “Half of all home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when everyone is sleeping,” said Cook. When installing a smoke alarm, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Those that come with non-

replaceable batteries are meant to last for 10 years and then must be replaced. Those with replaceable batteries will often emit a ‘chirp’ sound when getting low. As always, experts remind home owners to test their batteries twice a year. A helpful tip is to check the alarms every time the clocks are moved forward or back an hour. Hearing the alarm is one thing, but knowing what to do in the event of a fire is just as important. Experts recommend that families devise an escape route and set up a meeting place outside the home. A back-up route is also a good idea in the event that the main route is blocked by fire. “Smoke is poisonous,” said Cook. “If you must escape through smoke get low and try and get under it. If

If either is hot, leave the door closed and go to the back-up route. “Never re-enter a burning building,” adds Cook. “If pets are trapped inside, make sure you tell the firefighters right away.” Kitchen fires are also a

$30,” said Cook. “That’s pretty cheap life insurance.” If safety isn’t enough of a motivation, consider this: a homeowner caught without working smoke alarms on every level of their home could face a $355. Anyone who has questions about their smoke alarm or ideal places to install them can contact their local fire department. Dating back to 1925, Fire Prevention Week is held every October in communities across Canada and the United States. It was established in memory of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which claimed 300 lives and destroyed nine square kilometres of the city. It is considered the worst fire related disaster in U.S. history.

common cause of bigger home fires. That’s why experts suggest placing a smoke alarm at least three metres from a cooking appliance such as a stove. Many smoke alarms come with a built in ‘hush’ button feature that can be used to silence nuisance alarms. They will disable the alarm for 10 minutes in the event of a false alarm. For those with hearing impairments, there are smoke alarms and alert devices called accessories that will still inform occupants of a fire. As part of Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 4-11, members of GNES will be visiting local schools and long-term care facilities to spread the word about fire safety. “Smoke alarms are $20-
