Citing music that was so loud it was ‘vibrating dishes in the cupboards’, some residents living near the Napanee Fairgrounds voiced their displeasure to council over their decision to waive the noise bylaw during last month’s Voodoo Rock Festival. Held Sept. 23 and 24, the festival featured over 20 rock and roll bands playing outdoors. At Tuesday’s Greater Napanee council meeting the councillors voted to receive and respond to two written complaints from residents who live in the neighbourhood. In their letters they claimed the noise from the concert spilled out from the event and into their homes. One complainant said the music started at 10 a.m. and continued through 11 p.m. Though only two letters were submitted, one said several of his neighbours agreed that the noise was a disturbance. Prior to the event concert organizer Joe Matthews appeared before council and requested it waive its noise bylaw for the weekend of the event.

‘Push For Change’ campaign pulls into Napanee ‘Skid Row CEO’ Joe Roberts on cross-Canada trek to raise awareness about youth homelessness BY SETH DUCHENE

safety partner as it travels across the province. After the dinner — which was supported by the OPP and number of other community volunteers — Roberts spoke to those gathered at the mission. Roberts says he and his message have been wellreceived, particularly in Ontario. “We’re hitting every little community along the way,” he said. “Our core message is, we need to make a shift to better support young people, especially in rural communities.” He says that he’s somewhat surprised by the lack of awareness of youth homelessness issues in those smaller communities. “When it’s unseen, it’s hard to understand,” he said. “We don’t see a young person sleeping on a piece of cardboard in a town like Napanee, so there’s a misnomer that we don’t have youth atrisk and we don’t have homeless kids — but we do. We have kids that are couch-surfing, kids that are
living in unsuitable environments, we have kids that are in flop houses, kids that are about to drop out of school, kids that are involved in drugs, kids that are struggling with mental health, kids that may be wrapped up in the sex trade.” Roberts says he wants to confront those misconceptions, as well as spur a more proactive response from those who might be in a position to help. “We don’t want to wait until somebody is homeless and sleeping under a bridge before we reach out and help them — it’s the wrong model,” he said. Roberts says he thinks his campaign is striking a chord. “When we got to Ottawa, we had a brief audience with Minister Adam Vaughan and Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, these are two ministers inside Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet who are really taking a hard look at what need to do to prevent,

reduce and end youth homelessness,” he told the Beaver. “We’re having a deeper conversation with them. We’re making strides with provincial governments, we’re making strides with the federal government, and we’re getting to engage community schools, politicians, MPPs, law enforcement and front-line service providers right across the board. Engagement has been really high and really good, and we expect that to continue as we go through the most densely-populated part of the country.” He also said that the campaign is trying to capture Canadians’ attention like Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, which took place more than 25 years ago. “We don’t compare our campaign, of course, to Terry — he’s a Canadian icon and hero — but what Terry showed us is that if you’re courageous enough to take a stand for your cause, Canadians will embrace it — and Canadians have embraced us.” The campaign began in St. John’s, NFLD on May 1; Roberts expects to arrive in Vancouver B.C. by Sept. 30, 2017. Big Bright Lights back with new ‘home edition’ BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
TRANDS of lights that will illuminate Great er Napanee’s downtown core are already being affixed to local storefronts in preparation for next month’s Big Bright Light Show Block Party. The switch will be flipped for the first time of the season on Nov. 25 and will brighten the downtown through Jan. 31. In the meantime, the town is calling on residents to at least start thinking about getting into the holiday spirit and plan a big bright light show of their own. “This year we’re trying to get people involved from home,” said Lyndsay Tee, Economic Development Coordinator for Greater Napanee. “We’ve come up with the Big Bright Lights Home Edition. It’s a competition that we’re hoping residents in Greater Napanee will get involved in. Anyone living within Greater Napanee is encouraged to decorate their home for the holiday season with as much holiday cheer as possible. Then they register their home

address with us here at the town, then on Dec. 19 our judges will go out and judge the houses.” At stake are prizes of $200, $100 and $50 for the top three homes. Registration for the competition is now open until Dec. 16 either by picking up a form at 12 Market Square of e-mailing Ltee@GreaterNapanee.com. The houses don’t have to be illuminated until the night
of the judging. In the meantime, workers from the town will look to get the last strands hung downtown within the next couple of weeks as they put the final touches on the Big Bright Light Show launch. This year will mark the fifth year of the popular spectacle which sees the entire downtown storefronts lit up with millions of LED bulbs. “We’ll have musical talents as usual and Santa will
be on hand to help us do the countdown,” Tee said of the launch party. “We’ll have photos with Santa and hopefully some nice weather.” By turning the lights on a full month before Christmas, the town hopes it will draw visitors into the downtown leading up to the holiday season. “We hope it definitely encourages people to go into
Centre’s Lafarge Banquet Hall. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We’ve got a good mixture of people who have been with us in the summer, but we do actually have quite a few new people signed up as well,” said Tee. The outdoor market will wrap up this Saturday with a ‘Fall Into Nature’ theme. It runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Market Square.
the local businesses and shop local and cross people off their Christmas list,” said Tee. “That’s one of the reasons we turn the lights on in November. That way people can enjoy the lights as they do their shopping for the holidays.” Also in the holiday spirit is the upcoming annual Holiday Hometown Market, which will take place Nov. 19 at the Strathcona Paper

Can’t ignore the law
J. Earl Morrison, Owner-Publisher, 1953-1978
The federal Liberals have a problem on their hands — and it’s a problem that’s not just going to go away, and it’s a problem that doesn’t appear to have an easy answer. Combined in 1965 We’re talking about the situation facing Liberal with The Napanee Express (EST. 1861) Minister for Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef. and The Deseronto Her election last year, and her subsequent appointment to cabinet, were seemingly just the capper on Post (EST. 1904) what was a harrowing and inspiring story: she and her family fled war-torn Afghanistan as refugees in An independent order to build a new life in Canada. And, clearly, she’s done a great job at building a new, and very successcommunity ful, life. Further, she’s heading up the government’s examination of replacing our current first-past-thenewspaper post electoral system for, well, something else. About a month ago, however, we learned that there was more to her story. JEAN MORRISON As it turned out, Monsef was actually born in OWNER & Iran. Although she was born to Afghan parents, and she was never considered Iranian (even by the govPUBLISHER ernment of Iran), that’s where she was born (although her family had moved to Afghanistan SALES MANAGER before leaving for Canada). Unfortunately, that fact SCOTT JOHNSTON was not reflected in the documentation that allowed MANAGING EDITOR her to come to Canada as a refugee. After all, those incorrect documents weren’t her responsibility since she was a child at the time they were filed; it would be ridiculous for her to be punished for the mistakes of her mother. Further, it’s clear that Monsef and her family don’t represent any kind of security risk to Canada. However, the law is the law; many others have been forced to give up their citizenship and leave the country because they ran afoul of that law. As a result, it leaves the impression that Monsef is getting special treatment compared to others in a similar situation. We’d suggest that the law needs to be changed, because any law that would see Monsef (or anyone else facing a similar predicament) suffer any consequences because of something like this is, simply, a Napanee Beaver - 40005335 bad law. Here comes the zombies… With Halloween approaching, now is the perfect time to reconsider zombie fiction. There is surprising amount of diversity within this maligned genre and, believe it or not, there are zombie novels to fit many tastes. If there was ever such a thing as a ‘literary’ zombie novel, then Zone One by Colson Whitehead would be it. Using heavy-handed poetic language, the author paints a very bleak picture of New York City in the aftermath of a zombie pandemic that has nearly obliterated the population. It follows the third person narrative of Mark Spitz, a survivor who has been tasked with clearing out “stragglers” (undead people, frozen in time) from the titular Zone One, which is a section of Manhattan that has been barricaded by the reforming government and cleared of the more active “skels” (full-fledged zombies). Zone One’s deft use of language and general conception are its strong points but don’t expect a swift plot or characters you can connect with. Everything about this novel is cold and distant, which I presume is exactly what White-
head was trying to achieve. For YA (young adult) readers who want to venture into zombie territory, there is The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. This

exercise. The novel is driven by one character: Temple, a 15-year-old girl who wanders the blighted landscape of the United States in search of redemption. World War Z by Max Brooks, which was adapted for the movie screen a few years back, might be a good choice for those who are cynically interested in international politics. It is a documentary-style novel that features the testimony of various people, from all over the world, who have survived the zombie war. While this book has plenty of zombie slaying action, it is also a commentary on how modern governments and world organizations would (or wouldn’t!) handle a pandemic or natural disaster of magnitude. This book definitely has a political agenda — read it and see what I mean. As always, you can reserve any of the titles mentioned in this column at the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries at www.countylibrary.ca.
novel follows a girl that has grown up in a village that is fenced in to protect inhabitants from the zombies that lurk in the dense surrounding forest. One day, the fences are breached and Mary and her surviving friends are forced to venture into the woods to see if there if life beyond their small town. It has all the usual YA hallmarks: a love triangle, a shrewd young female protagonist and, of course, teenage angst. For those who enjoyed reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy, The Passage by Justin Cronin or even True Grit by Charles Portis, The Reapers Are The Angels by Alden Bell is a good ‘readCatherine Coles is the alike’. It has zombies but, like Zone One, I wouldn’t Manager of Library Services really consider it a genre for L&A County.

What’s in those old sayings? While they occasionally creep into conversations in the new millennium, old sayings have only a fraction of the place that they once knew in the communication process of ‘old timers.’ Perhaps it’s because we live in a society saturated with graphics. Words alone seem inadequate — there must be images in order for full understanding to be realized — television, Blackberries, videotrons, etc. In the good old days, when imagination brought verbal expression to life, descriptive phrases, idioms and distinctive clichés were as vibrant as an animated commercial advertisement. Some of those old sayings were X-rated — neither fit for family reading or hearing. But many, used as commonly as the timestable of that same era, brought the listener’s mind as much to life as a powerpoint presentation — and they were heard as often as straight-forward proclamations. For instance there is ‘sleep tight’. It was a descriptive way of wishing someone a comfortable and undisturbed night’s rest. The idea evolved from ancient times, when, before box springs and coil mattresses were part of the makeup of beds, ropes were stretched from one end of a bed frame to another. Customer service I am writing to inform people of a wonderful pharmacy in downtown Napanee. While out walking on Aug. 2, I fell and broke my hip. Four days later, I was released from the hospital and needed new prescriptions filled. However, I couldn’t drive for six weeks. So, I called Gray’s hoping they could help me. Laurie showed great concern and drove to our house to pick up the prescriptions. Two hours later, they delivered the pills. Then, the pharmacist called to explain everything to me. They treated me wonderfully, and they always do. They always treat us with respect and kindness. Dave and Joyce Jones, Greater Napanee

to minimize expressing feeling unwell — thinking that saying “I feel sick” sounds too extreme, the expression ‘under the weather’ was substituted. This idiom also had its origin in the days of sea-going sailing ships. When a sailor was not feeling well, he was sent below deck, out of the weather, in an effort to allow him to recover. Some etymologists add: “At first it was, ‘under the weather bow’. That was the part of the ship upon which the bad weather was blowing. So ‘under the weather’ was meant to express one feeling as rotten as the part of the vessel pummeled by the inclement conditions. The list is almost endless: ‘Running around like a chicken with its head cut off’, ‘hold your horses’, ‘to beat the band’, ‘for crying out loud’, and ‘shake a leg!’. But one of the most unusual, which was indicative of the financial conditions of the Great Depression, was, ‘as poor as Job’s turkey’. It was the invention of a Nova Scotia-born humourist. In one of his droll literary sketches he sought to describe someone even poorer than Job (who had been stripped of all his possessions). So he hit upon this expression: “Job’s turkey was so destitute that he had only one feather left in its tail, and had to lean against the fence to gobble!”

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago October 12, 1966 ■ Mr. and Mrs. James Green were about to embark on a big adventure. The couple were bound for Africa to conduct mission work in Kenya. The missionary work was expected to last four-and-a-half years. The couple were also bringing their three children along as well. They hadn’t been in Napanee very long. Only a year earlier, they had returned to Canada after a mission to Tanzania. Mr. Green was a mechanic by trade, while his wife was a nurse. She was planning to work at a 30-bed hospital in Letein. ■ Garnet M. Mills, the author of a farm column for the Beaver, was drawing attention to a new farmer training program. Under the program, farmers who go back to school to improve their technical knowledge of agriculture would be paid up to $75 per week for their efforts. The course in question was expected to start in the new year and run for two to three months, during a period where farmers would typically have more time to be away from their farms.
35 Years Ago October 13, 1981 ■ While a lack of rain can cause headaches for farmers, so too can an overabundance of precipitation. Farmers reported that the summer of 1981 was simply too wet for many of their crops. In fact, many farmers said they couldn’t remember a wetter growing season. Crops such as beans and cauliflower were particularly hard-hit by the rain over the summer, with significant crop losses being reported. With cauliflower, too much rain can prompt the spread of alternaria, which results in black, moldy-looking growths within the plants. ■ A Yarker-area farmer reported an ugly incident on his property. The farmer said that a number of his sheep were attacked, but not by predators from the wild. Instead, these animals were wounded and killed by people. The farmer said he found one ewe dead in a field north of his barn. The next day, he found four lambs shot through the neck. Two of those lambs were dead when they were discovered, while a third had to be destroyed. Police were investigating the incident.

BRIDGE WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL DR. JULIE AMEY
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Looking to prolong the Thanksgiving spirit a little bit longer, volunteers from the Lennox and Addington Community Risk Watch will be hosting a food drive this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will be going door-to-door collecting nonperishable items from the Napanee Salvation Army Food Bank and the Morningstar Mission. “We have 18 different routes,” said Napanee OPP Constable Jackie Perry. “I’m still looking for volunteers. If anyone is interested in helping out that would be great.” Volunteers can drop by the Napanee OPP Detachment at 86 Advance Ave. Food donations can also be

dropped off at that location tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Most people have something that they can share,” said Cst. Perry. “In talking with Kevin Alkenbrack, the executive director of the Morningstar Mission, he’s saying that he’s seeing an increase in the need for the cans that you peel open. A lot of people that utilize the service are people living in tents or motel rooms that wouldn’t necessarily have a can opener. Those things are useful for them.” In particular the food banks are asking for canned fruit, canned meat/fish, fruit cups, spaghetti sauce/pasta, applesauce, canned vegetables, granola bars, evaporated milk, brown beans, canned soup, peanut butter and juice. Those that live within the town limit but won’t be home on Saturday morning
can leave a box on on their doorstep which volunteers will happily collect. “Thanksgiving is kind of the time when the giving season kicks off,” said Cst. Perry. “We’re hoping that we can capitalize on that spirit of giving. With families all getting together we hope people will be more inclined to think of others and other’s needs that are less fortunate.” Monetary donations are also welcome which will be split between the Salvation Army and the Morningstar Mission. In keeping with the giving theme, on Sunday the Napanee OPP will be screening a movie called Little Red Wagon at the Napanee Boulevard Cinema at 3:30 p.m. “It’s about a young boy (Zach Bonner) who starts gathering food and supplies in the aftermath of Hurri-
cane Charley,” said Perry. “It’s a great feel good, family movie.” The documentary also covers Bonner’s journey across the U.S. to raise awareness of the plight of many homeless youths. Admission is free of charge but they will be accepting donations of toothbrushes, tooth paste, deodorant, soap, gloves, shampoo, socks, razors, shaving cream and chapstick. The movie is an extension of the Push For Change campaign, which saw Joe Roberts visit Napanee last weekend as part of his cross Canada trek to raise awareness for youth homelessness. The items collected at the movie theatre will go towards helping local youths who have no home, who rely on couch surfing and other community agencies to provide shelter.

Magnificent seven in a row for Raiders Loveys blanks Islanders, Raiders roll Rebels BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Napanee Raider fans had plenty to be thankful for this weekend as their hockey team steamrolled the Gananoque Islanders 6-0 at home Friday and the Campbellford Rebels 13-2 on the road Saturday. The wins give Napanee a 7-0 record on the season. Deseronto native Brodie Maracle led the charge on Saturday night, potting four goals with two assists against the hapless Rebels. Riley Steeves had two goals and five assists while Justynn Steven also notched a pair of goals. Tim Morton, Griffen Conger, Cullen Hinds and Nic Case all had singles. Despite the final score, the game was closely contested through the first frame. Conger had the only goal for either side, striking at the 5:29 mark. The Raiders did pepper Rebels goalie Brandon Soucy with 19 shots in the opening peri-

four just 33 seconds into the period. That was the start of a five goal outburst for the team. Campbellford did score their only two of the game in the middle frame,
cutting the score to 3-1 and 5-2 at the time. Maracle would again strike early in the third, potting a goal 48 seconds after the opening draw. That
ignited a seven goal period for Napanee as they cruised to the easy victory. Napanee made good use of the manadvantage, converting on all three of their power-play
opportunities while holding Campbellford scoreless when they were down a man. The final shot count favoured the visitors 70-21. Martelle would finish with 19 saves to improve to 2-0 on the year, his other win also coming against the Rebels. Friday night at home against the Islanders it was again all Napanee in a 6-0 victory. Sean Robertson accounted for half of those goals with his second hat trick of the season. His first goal of the night was also the first of the game, coming at the 10:35 mark. Devon King and Hinds would each chip in a goal, all within a five minute span. Robertson closed out the period with his second of the game. Steven struck early in the second and Robertson iced the victory in the third with his third of the game. “It was on my mind but the main thing I was thinking about out there was the big zero on the scoreboard,” Robertson said of his hat trick. “I was more focused on not giving up a goal than I was on getting that third one. We were already up five, one more really didn’t mean anything.

Golden Hawks sweep ESS Eagles in gridiron homecoming Hawks shine in new uniforms BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
fter being shut out in their first two games the NDSS Golden Hawks senior boys football team was sparked by, of all sources, its defensive line. Team captain Gabe Charlebois picked off an Ernestown Eagles’ pass attempt and ran 30 yards for Napanee’s first touchdown of the season, igniting a 27-0 victory at home on Thursday. The pick came in the second quarter, which saw NDSS score 18 points. It seemed to fire up the Hawks, who prior to that play struggled to gain any yards with their ground game and even had a kick

attempt blocked. “We were sort of kept on our back foot there for the first half of the first quarter,” said Hawks coach Corey Bowen. “Ernestown really stuck it to us early, but it was a big commitment from our guys to be able to come back from that.” After NDSS’ Anthony Collins fumbled on the previous series, Bowen ran him back out on the next possession knowing the star running back would be eager to atone. He rewarded his coach’s faith by powering through a block at the five yard line at punching in the second touchdown of the game. Brock Vale would kick both converts, a field goal and added a rogue. In the fourth quarter with the game already in hand Ryan Weaver put an exclamation point on the win with a 60 yard punt return touchdown.
“Once the jitters had calm down the guys realized that this is where we belong,” Bowen said of his players. “We’ve had five or six weeks now of executing these plays. Guys are starting to realize the system we’ve put in place works as long as they put in the commitment and that’s what was able to turn the game around I believe.” As pleased as he was to finally see his team put some points up on the board, Bowen was just as happy to keep the Eagles out of their end zone. “Ernestown is a quality side, I watched them play last week and they absolutely destroyed Bayridge,” said Bowen. “I knew it was going to be a tough game, I would have never said we were going to shut them out.“

Battle For The Ball
RAIDERS | Perfect record to be tested CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19
Adam Prudhomme-Staff
NDSS’ Hayley Lambert (left) gets set to send the ball up the field during Tuesday’s KASSAA league field hockey game against Sydenham. The two teams would battle to a scoreless draw, giving Napanee a 3-2-1 record on the season so far, good for sixth in the standings.
The big shutout was the big difference for us.” Matt Loveys earned the shutout, turning away all 30 shots for the first clean sheet of his Junior C career. With his three goal output Robertson now has nine on the year, which places him second in the league behind Port Hope’s Dalton Lawrence. A Junior C rookie, the Burlington native spent the last two season skating with the Milton Icehawks where he had 12 goals in his last two seasons combined. “The guys are really good, it’s nice playing on this team,” Robertson said of the Raiders. “It’s definitely a good atmosphere here. The league is a little different, it’s a little more physical so it’s going to keep me on my toes. I’ve got to focus on that but other than that I think I’ve adapted pretty well to it.” Though things have gone his team’s way for the most part through the first couple of games, Robertson says there’s still room for

With the win NDSS was able to retain the Robb Cup for a second straight year. The cup, named for NDSS vice-principal Stacey Robb as a show of support in her fight against cancer, is contested whenever Ernestown and Napanee meet in the regular season. The Hawks also showed their support by donning bright pink socks. Thursday’s game had plenty of hype surrounding it as it was not only Napanee’s home opener, but it was their first chance to show off their new uniforms. adorning the shoulder pads, a nod to the Golden Hawk symbol. Now 1-2 on the season, the Hawks will look to carry
their success into next this afternoon when they will host the Sydenham Golden Eagles. That game will get underway at 1:30 p.m. Sydenham enters the game at 0-2 on the season. In the junior game, the Hawks were able to overcome an early Ernestown touchdown to rally back for a 16-15 victory in a hardhitting affair. Cal DuChene accounted for all of NDSS’ scoring with two rushing touchdowns, a two-point convert and two punt singles. The win puts the juniors at 2-1 on the season and moves them into a five-way tie atop the KASSAA standings as Sydenham, Frontenac, Holy Cross and Regi all have two wins. Sydenham is the only team at 2-0 however while the rest are 2-1. NDSS will have their chance to hand them their first loss this afternoon as they host the Golden Eagles at 3:15 p.m.
improvement. “It’s still early in the season,” he said. “We’re definitely playing well. A couple of mishaps that we wish we could have back but we still have the perfect record that we hope to keep up for the rest of the year.” That perfect record will be put to the test tomorrow night when they host the 14-1 Picton Pirates starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Strathcona Paper Centre. While both the Raiders and Panthers sit atop the league with 14 points, they have built a bit of an early cushion on the rest of the Tod Division. The rest of the standings show the Islanders (2-4-1, five points), Amherstview Jets (2-5, four points), Pirates (three points) and Rebels (06) all chasing the top dogs.

1971 Manager Napanee and District Chamber of Commerce. Our beautiful BJ was taken from us suddenly, on the morning on October 8, 2016. BJ was a soft hearted man who was never afraid to show his emotion when retelling a great story. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a mischievous grin, both of which were evident in all of his photos. BJ loved living on the farm and he took great pride in taking care of it, and his beloved golf course. His second home was on the island in Georgian Bay with friends and family. If he wasn’t out doing water sports you could find him helping someone out with a cottage project. BJ loved being a father to Calvin and Izzy (Josh) and he was incredibly proud of them. You could hear it in his voice every time he spoke. BJ was a husband for 23 wild years to his soul mate Tanya who will miss her Sweet Shamu deeply. Their marriage was filled with adventures and incredible memories; they always knew how to make each other laugh. Sadly missed by his mother Brenda, sister Sherry (Mark), sister-in-law Natalie (Brent), nieces and nephews Mathew, Emma, Holly and Eric, his many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and dear friends who were like family to him. Predeceased by his father Bill and father-in-law Claude. BJ was a passionate fan of all things golf, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Tragically Hip, Jazz and Blues and a great guitar riff. He was a creative soul, pursuing his painting, writing novels and poems and crafting flowers out of scrap metal. He was a proud contributor to Froid d’Art the past two winters. In keeping with BJ’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday, October 15th. Please join us on the family farm from 1pm-4pm. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. The family wishes to thank our local paramedics, fire fighters, and the entire care team at Lennox and Addington County General Hospital for their compassionate care on Saturday morning. Memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 2550 Victoria Park Ave Suite 800 Toronto Ont. M2J 5A9 can be made in BJ’s memory. Artists who specialize in making things the old fashioned way will be displaying their work this weekend at Bath’s Fairfield-Gutzeit House during the annual Fall Fibre Affair. Featuring seven artists, the house will be the perfect backdrop for the event as the artists will be showing not only their finished product,
but the methods they use to create their works. “It goes along with the house itself,” said Susan Farber, one of the organizers as well as participating artists. “There are not a lot of mechanized things.” Farber, who specializes in felting, will be joined by Pamela Farber (jewellery), Tracey Asselstine (weaving), Beth Abbott (quilting), Gina Ritchie (yarn and rovings), Herb Salter (woodworking) and Wendy Austen (wearable art). “We’ve tried over the years to have a variety, so when people come they see new things every year,” said Farber. “Even the artists that have been here consistently, they always try to have a few new things to entice our viewers to come in and see what they’re doing.”
Perhaps what makes the event so unique is guests get a bit of a history lesson in how things were made back in the early pioneer days. “Some of them like to have a little bit of their activities on display,” Farber said of the artists. “It’s not always easy for everyone. Tracy is often spinning at the event. Usually the children find that really interesting. They like to know a little bit about it. Gina does a lot of drop spindle, which is creating yarn using the rovings and her spindle. It’s dropped to the ground. It’s an old fashioned idea. That really entices a lot of people.” Farber says they make a big effort to ensure that there is something for everyone at the event. As an added bonus, guests can tour the historic house free of charge. “A lot of people like to
come in and they have tea,” said Farber. “This year they’re also doing a variety of homemade treats with tea and coffee in the dinning room. It’s a nice dinning room, you’ve always got a lot of nice sun coming in and you can see the water. It’s a very nice way to spend an afternoon.” The treats will be available by donation with proceeds going to local charities in the village. “Many shoppers who have been coming here for many years say this is the start to their holiday shopping,” added Farber. “They like to come here and find unique items for their friends and family.” The event runs on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The house is located at 341 Main St. in Bath. CONCERT | ‘I wanted to engage youth’: promoter CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 In a recorded vote every councillor supported the motion to waive it, save for mayor Gord Schermerhorn who voted no. “I drove there Friday night and Saturday night and I did hear a lot of noise,” said Schermerhorn. “If we have something like this next year, I’d like to try and advance that we take it out to the Strathcona Paper Centre in the field or somewhere where there’s not residential homes. That’s just my personal feeling.” Despite the loud noise, councillor Carol Harvey felt the pros outweighed the cons. “I live pretty close (to the fairgrounds), and it was loud,” said Harvey. “I didn’t get any calls, however. I recognize that the fair board needs the income from these affairs. We had a lot of people come into town, probably spend money and support our businesses. I know that it was noisy, but it was only two days and one night.” Not all the feedback from the concert was negative. “I would like to say I was speaking to a young lady who got a good number of community service hours for her high school diploma by attending and being a part of that production,” said councillor Max Kaiser. “So I just wanted to offer a comment to the opposite side that it was well received by some, if not by all.” “We’re always crying that
there’s nothing for the kids to do,” added councillor Shaune Lucas. “If this festival catches fire you’ll see thousands as the years come by because this is the sort of thing that they gravitate towards. I like the idea of keeping supportive but moving the location I think would be a neat option. I’m not against it.” For his part Matthews says he has not committed to a venue for next year. When informed of the complaints brought up at council, he felt it got a bad rap because the concert was rock-and-roll, which may not be a popular choice among some residents. He cited events such as the county music concerts or tractor pulls that make noise and go late into the night. “We had a noise exemption for the weekend,” said Matthews. “We dropped something off (to all residents near the fairgrounds prior to the concert) and offered them free concert tickets.” When asked about the notion of moving it to the SPC, Matthews says he has no interest in relocating. “The idea is, it’s a great event for the community,” said Matthews. “There’s something to do for kids, they weren’t sitting in front of a computer. Kids got in free, I wanted to engage the youth, I wanted them checking out live music. There’s a lot of positive things to come with live music.”
