Brodie Maracle of the Napanee Raiders is hopeful of a juicy rebound as Picton Pirates goalie Aaron Young makes a save during Friday’s PJHL game in Napanee. The Raiders lost the game 5-2 for their first defeat of the season. For more on this game, see Sports Page 19.
As cooler weather moves in, the Greater Napanee Poverty Reduction Committee is appealing to the community to help to make sure no child goes without winter boots. Known as Operation Warm Toes, the annual campaign calls for donations of new winter boots which will be distributed to those in need in time for winter, ideally ahead of the first snowfall. “It’s for any school-age child in (elementary) school or high school,” said Dana Henry, Community and Family Services co-ordinator for the Napanee Salvation Army and member of the Poverty Reduction Committee. “They can register (at Salvation Army) or at the Health Centre. The pick up date for the boots will be early November at the Health Centre.” Parents and guardians can register their children throughout the end of this week at either location. Registration is simple: they simply confirm that the family has an income of less than $35,000. “It’s a very easy registration to do,” said Henry. “We encourage anyone that thinks they might be in need of boots for their kids this year to come in and register.” The numbers have stayed fairly steady throughout the years in terms of those who require the service. “We’re expecting over 350 boots (to be handed out),” said Henry. “That’s for all of Lennox and Addington County from the north and out Amherstview way.”

Two bid for PC Party nomination Ex-MP Daryl Kramp, Bancroft councillor Tracy McGibbon in race Beaver Staff
HERE are two hats in the ring for the Hastings-Lennox and Addington Provincial Progressive Conservative nomination. Former local Conservative MP Daryl Kramp and Bancroft municipal councillor Tracy McGibbon have announced that they’ll seek the PC nod in time for the 2018 provincial election. The nomination meeting is planned for mid-November, according to the riding association’s Facebook site.
T
Changes to both the federal and subsequently provincial riding boundaries means that there will be no incumbent in the race in the next provincial vote; current local MP Randy Hillier will be seeking the nomination for the PCs in the new neighbouring riding of LanarkFrontenac-Kingston. For Kramp, the nomination bid represents a return to the political arena after being narrowly defeated by Liberal Mike Bossio in the federal election last year. Kramp had served as MP for Hastings-Prince Edward
since 2004. Kramp announced his candidacy earlier this month. In a press release, Kramp pointed to rising energy costs as one of the main reasons for re-entering the political fray. “I can no longer sit back and watch Ontario become a have-not province,” he said. “The Ontario Liberal Party under Dalton McGuinty and now Kathleen Wynne are forcing people out of their homes due to the out-of-control energy costs. Regulatory nightmares, criminality and mismanagement have strangled

our economy and negatively affected the lives of ordinary citizens. The rapidly-growing debt is threatening the future of our young people.” He said that he believed his “knowledge and commitment” have served the riding well, and would do so again if elected. McGibbon, meanwhile, says her experience at the municipal level, as well as working on a number of community boards and committees, would assist her as an MPP. She’s currently the chair of the North Hastings Family Health Team board of directors, and was recently selected as one of the advisors for the PC Party on natural resources policy. “Under the Wynne government, we’ve experienced hardships impacting our families, children, seniors and business owners, making it less and less affordable to live and do business in Ontario,” she said in a press release issued earlier this month. “We’ve seen skyrocketing electricity rates, excessive taxes, red tape, job losses and cutbacks in health care and education. My community and rural Ontario are feeling the pain and I want to do something about it.” Replacing the Wynne government, she said, would be the first step in tackling those problems. “The province needs a new generation of leadership and that’s what Patrick Brown’s PC Party is offering. We need a break from this old, tired Liberal government. It’s time to revive Ontario.”
Adam Prudhomme-Staff
The Napanee Salvation Army’s Dana Henry says the need for quality winter footware is as severe as ever.
TOES | Looking for donations to hit goal CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 To help match that quota, they’re asking members of the community to give generously either with new boots of through monetary donations. They do get some funding from the United Way but could always use more. This year they’ve teamed with Giant Tiger to help supply the boots. “We’re looking for all sizes but often times we have a hard time getting the bigger sizes,” said Henry. Making matters worse
is they don’t have many boots left over from last year’s campaign and will really depend on the community to help replenish their stock. And early indications are that this winter will be a particularly harsh one, making the need for warm boots that much greater. Donations can be made at the Salvation Army at 135 Mill St. or the Napanee Area Community Health Centre at 26 Dundas St. W. Monetary donations will also be accepted and are subject to a tax receipt.

Charges pending in bus accident near Denbigh: OPP BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
The Napanee OPP detachment said yesterday that charges are pending in relation to a passenger bus accident that occurred in the northern end of Lennox and Addington County last Friday. According to Napanee OPP Detachment spokesperson Constable Jackie Perry, none of the approximately 50 seniors travelling on the bus suffered lifethreatening injuries, although 10 needed to be taken to hospital for treatment. The accident occurred on Highway 28 west of Highway 41, shortly before 10 a.m. Cst. Perry reported that the bus was transport-
ing a group of Shriners who were making their way from Bancroft to Montreal to deliver toys to a children’s hospital. The bus had left the road and entered a ditch. The incident resulted in a significant mobilization of regional emergency crews. Cst. Perry said that paramedics from Lennox and Addington as well as Hastings County, Frontenac County and Renfrew County all responded to the call. She also said that the Renfrew, Killaloe and Kaladar OPP detachment sent officers to respond. The highway was reduced to one lane of traffic while emergency crews responded. Cst. Perry said the incident is still under investigation.

Women urged to ‘Just Book It’ Breast cancer screening day taking place at L&A Hospital BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
In the spirit of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the staff at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital are urging women to ‘Just Book It’ on Oct. 26. The ‘it’ they are referring to is a potentially life-saving mammogram. “We’re going to have a full day of mammograms but the Just Book It portion will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” said Wenda Lalande, technical specialist of the diagnostic department at LACGH. “In particular, from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., we will be screening women between the age of 50-55 who have never been screened for the Ontario Breast Screening program. These are women who you might typically expect to be in the workforce possibly working Monday to Friday and are not able to book an appointment for a mammogram.” The goal of the event is to take away the hurdles that would preAdam Prudhomme-Staff

vent most women from getting screened and making it as easy as possible. From 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in particular, the screenings will be done with no appointment necessary — patients can simply walk in. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can detect early signs of cancer. LACGH has had mammogram screening equipment since November 2012. Local businesses Sand n’ Sea, Milady’s Lace and Seasons Fine Foods will be on hand to provide food and showcase some of the clothing available to women who have had reconstructive surgery. Though they aim to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for the event, that doesn’t underscore the importance of getting screened. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Ontario, with an estimated 9,800 women diagnosed with it in 2015. Approximately 1,900 women died from it last year. “There’s been a decrease anywhere from 25 to 35 per cent in the mortality in breast cancer and
it’s being attributed to early detection,” said Lalande. “Catching it early gives you a better chance for healing the cancer. It’s less likely to spread and it gives the patient more treatment opportunities and options.” Because the disease is so common, doctors urge women to get tested on a regular basis. “At 50, on your birthday call and make an appointment,” said Lalande. “From that point on, if all things are good, it would be every two years and you get a recall letter from Cancer Care Ontario saying your Ontario Breast Screening Program mammogram is due in two months.” A mammogram can be scheduled without a referral from a family doctor. The results will be sent to a patient’s family physician. All mammograms are free of charge. To book an appointment, visit www.LACGH.com or by calling 613-354-3301. The Just Book It clinic will be held at the Bridge Street entrance of LACGH, around the back of the building.

‘Clem Chesterfield’ rides into L&A County Local musician Tim Sheffield invokes old cowboy’s persona for upcoming museum performance BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Drawing on inspiration from the likes of Willie Nelson and Hank Williams, ‘Clem Chesterfield’ will bring his own brand of ‘slacker country’ to an Oct. 27 acoustic performance at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives. Chesterfield is perhaps best known around Napanee by his real name, Tim Sheffield. As both a music teacher and performer, Sheffield was a fixture in the Napanee music community for much of the last two decades. Though he moved to Kingston in 2012, he has continued to return for the odd performance in his old stomping grounds. During his time in Napanee, he was mostly known as a rock and blues musician. While reflecting on a difficult time in his life, he began to develop his alter-ego of a
country music cowboy known as Clem Chesterfield. His Live at the Museum performance next Thursday will be to promote his debut CD titled The Chronicles of Clem Chesterfield which he released earlier this year. “It’s more like a 1950s kind of old country, like Hank Williams or Wilf Carter,” said Sheffield. “It’s just a steel guitar, upright acoustic bass and myself on guitar and vocals. We kind of did it old style just sitting around a microphone and came up with the ‘old country’ thing.” For his performance next week he will be accompanied by fiddle player Al Duquette. For those familiar with Sheffield’s other work, a turn to the country music genre might seem a bit random. He does, however, come by honestly. “My dad as a music teacher was a complete country man,” said Sheffield. “My roots were definitely in

country. I didn’t feel like it was a departure. And, really, the way songs come about, I’ve been writing songs for 30 years. Over that time period you sort of go through the cast-offs that maybe didn’t make the record or maybe didn’t make the recording stage even. That’s what I did and wound up with these six songs.” He says songs that didn’t fit into the rock genre were
given new life when he added a country twist. It turns out an appearance at the museum, which has its genesis as the county’s jail, is a perfect fit for his alter-ego. He says he’s hoping to scope out the joint as a possible set for a music video to accompany his song ‘She Just Waved Goodbye’. “Being in a jail is funny because I’ve been putting together some ideas for a
music video,” said Sheffield. “It would take place in a jail cell with the singer telling his story on death row.” On an even broader scale, Sheffield says he’s excited for the idea of reviving the live music scene. During his time in Napanee he says he saw the growing pains fellow musicians had to go through trying to find a venue that would welcome live, original music. He says
the museum is a great fit. “It’s not a typical venue and I’m all for that,” said Sheffield. “It’s good to see people re-thinking venues.” Sheffield’s performance will get underway at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $3. For more on the event visit www.CountyMuseum.ca or call 613-3543027 . For more on Sheffield visit www.TimSheffield.com.

■ Napanee council gave the green light to a new subdivision development on the east end of town. Acting on a recommendation from the town’s planning committee, council approved the subdivision application. The property was owned by Thomas and Harold Barrett. The subdivision would be located east of Camden Road and south of Church Street. The proposed subdivision would have 86 property lots. The plans were presented to a meeting of the board which met before council. ■ The chair of the Napanee policing committee, deputy-reeve W.R. Douglas, said he and his committee were going to take their time in appointing a new chief of police. The previous chief, H.R. Benn, had resigned at the end of July. Benn then accepted a job as a constable with the force following his resignation Douglas had reported that some 14 applications had come in seeking the police chief’s job. He said the committee was still meeting to determine the best candidate for the job, and wouldn’t be rushed in doing so.
35 Years Ago October 22, 1986 ■ As the temperture was beginning to drop outside, there was an increase in the number of heating-related fires. One occurred at a Belleville Road home when a woodstove chimney heated up to the point of igniting some cedar shinles near the stovepipe. While the home was heavily damaged, no one was injured. Meanwhile, a heating blanket caught fire in an apartment building in Napanee. The tennant was visiting a neighbour at the time when they noticed smoke emerging from the apartment. The blanket had caught fire on the couch. ■ The Napanee Lions Club approached Napanee council to push for the Napanee Rotary pool to be enclosed. Bill Raycraft, speaking on behalf of the Napanee Lions Club, said that “we would like to work with the recreation committee to get a pool enclosure. “We (the club) have finished our project at the hospital, and two weeks ago at our regular meeting, we decided we needed another project. Napanee has come of age for a yearround facility at the pool area,” Raycraft continued.

‘Zombie Walk’ returns in time for Halloween Second-ever event designed to collect hat and mitten donations — and create some spooky fun BY ADAM PRUDHOMME
‘zombie’ participants will be donating hats and mitts to Staff Reporter Greater Napanee Emergency Services fire departUndead creatures will shuf- ment for kids in need. The just-for-fun walk is fle through downtown on Oct. 30 marking the second open to all ages and particiannual Napanee Zombie pants are encouraged to don their best zombie costume. Walk. “What we’re doing is There’s no need to fear, however, as these are more gathering hats and mitts for kind-hearted zombies than kids,” said event organizer the ones typically por- Wendy Oakley. “Donations trayed. Prior to departing can be made to the Civitan from Market Square the Club as well where they

have hot chocolate for sale (in the Market Square). We’re going to hand everything over to the fire department and they can do their Christmas stuff with that we gather that day.” Drawing inspiration from Kingston’s Zombie Walk as well as her love for the hit show The Walking Dead, Oakley says she was eager to bring the event to Napanee. Knowing she had a hit event on her hands,
she decided to add the charitable aspect to it. “Hats and mitts are just like socks, they tend to disappear,” said Oakley, “so the more we can get the more we can know our kids are nice and cozy so the kids can go out and play safe and not get frost bitten.” The walk will get underway at 2 p.m. as the group of ghouls travel west along Bridge Street, making a left on Robert Street. From there
they will take a left on Dundas Street, stroll through downtown all the way to East Street, where they take a left and circle back to town hall. After seeing a crowd of about 30 for their first walk last October, Oakley is expecting to see an increase this time around as word of the event has spread through social media. “(Participants) put a lot of attention to detail and a lot of effort,” Oakley said of
the costumes last year. “It’s such fun and the artists in this town are just amazing.” For those that love this time of year, it’s the perfect chance for them to show off their makeup and costume skills just prior to Halloween. Anyone interested in the event can search Zombie Walk Napanee, Hats and Mitts for Kids on Facebook. They can also call Oakley at 613-354-5745.

Businesses come together at annual ‘Showcase’ BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Networking opportunities abounded in the Strathcona Paper Centre Lafarge Banquet Hall on Thursday during the Napanee and District Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Business Showcase. Several business owners had booths set up in the hall and were ready to talk and listen to their colleagues in an effort to share best business practices. “The main purpose is a business to business function, with an overlap in moving to consumers to get to know the businesses in the community,” said Art Dolan, Napanee and District Chamber of Commerce President. “They know a lot of them but not necessarily all of them.” The event was free of charge and allowed visitors to peruse the hall and get a feel of the many different businesses that are available in Napanee and the surrounding area. “Last year we did it for the first year and a number of people who were exhibitors found it very worthwhile because they met people on a different level and were able to find business in that,” said Dolan. “That’s the whole objective is ultimately to find business.”
The benefit wasn’t just for business owners, but in job seekers as well. Career Edge, an organization that helps connect job seekers with employers, was also on hand. They work with local businesses to help fill a need for a particular skill set. Gathering a handful of businesses into one room was a great opportunity for job seekers to get a feel for the local job market. “I’m quite excited about this community and the progress and the general direction it’s moving to,” noted Doland, who says Napanee has experienced considerable growth over the last decade. “It’s one of those few communities in North America that has wifi throughout and that’s the future. Napanee seen that and stepped forward with that. I think the town is moving in the right direction and we service a broad spectrum.” Dolan says the success of this year’s event will mean it will be back for a third year. Next time around, however, he’s hoping to reach out to the agricultural and trades industry which is abundant in Napanee. He hopes to have those sectors better represented at their future showcases. “We may developing some other shows that may particularly suit that category,” Dolan said of agriculture and trades.

J.P Cormier next up for Napanee Starstop series around North America and carved out his own niche in the Canadian music scene as an accomplished solo performer. “I started out in this business as a side man in bluegrass music in the U.S., and now I’m a solo act,” he said. “So, do the math. (My music has) gone through every kind of incarnation you can possibly imagine in the past 40 years. It’s getting close to 35 years that I’ve been on the road. It never stops evolving.” Although he embarked on his life in music on the guitar, Cormier has branched out to include banjo, fiddle and a number

Call it ‘folk’, call it ‘roots’, call it what you will — J.P. Cormier has been playing it for decades now, and playing it well. Cormier, a Juno Award nominee and multi-time East Coast Music Award winner, will be bringing his solo show to St. Mary Magdalene Church as part of the Napanee Starstop Concert Series on Nov. 4. Now 47, Cormier was only 16 when he recorded his first album. Since then, Cormier has travelled
of other instruments. In fact, he’s won championships playing fiddle, guitar and banjo over the years. Cormier points to a number of musical influences that have guided him along the way, from Django Reinhardt to Pete Seager to Gordon Lightfoot. “I’m not really a one-trick pony,” he said in a telephone interview earlier this week. “I’d never stop and do one thing. My shows have a lot of variety, it’s all over the place. Each one of those directions comes from one of those inspirations.” When asked whether

folk/roots music is becoming more ‘mainstream’, Cormier is blunt: his kind of music has never been considered ‘mainstream’. But, it doesn’t really matter. “This music has been around since the dawn of time; it’s been the same, it has drawn the same people,” he said. “It’s been around for decades and decades. It’s never been ‘mainstream’, even though some people have had tremendous commercial success with it. But it has a massive following; it probably has a more loyal following than pop music does.” He has developed a loyal following of his own along the way. His 2015 song ‘Hometown Battlefield’ — detailing the struggles of soldiers who have returned home from combat with post-traumatic stress disorder — became an Internet sensation, with almost a million views on YouTube. As for what those attending the Nov. 4 show can expect, even Cormier says he’s not quite sure. “It could be anything, you just never know. I’m going to try to entertain them, that’s what I do. I have a looselyassembled skeleton of a show that I use every night, but it changes depending on the mood of the audience,”

Pirates spoil Raiders’ perfect record Port Hope Panthers emerge as last unbeaten team BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
ny hope of the Napanee Raiders besting the franchise best mark of 37-3 they set in 2008-09 was dealt a huge blow this weekend as they suffered a 5-2 loss at home against Picton followed by a 3-2 road loss in Port Hope. Granted, the Raiders had a long way to go to match that mark, as they came into Friday’s game having won their first seven games but now sit at 7-2. After they saw their own seven game win streak snapped on Friday the Raiders had a chance to end Port Hope’s seven gamer. Justynn Steven got the Raiders off on the right track, scoring a power-play goal at the 9:38 mark of the first with help from Matthew Scott and Austin Boulard. The Panthers roared back with two late in the period with Dalton Lawrence striking on the power-play and Andrew Gurr adding one late in the first. Nic Case tied it up early in the second and the game
A
remained 2-2 until Cameron McGill potted the eventual game winner at the 15:41 mark of the second. Despite outshooting the Panthers 75 in the third period, Napanee couldn’t muster the game tying goal to at least force overtime. Sheldon Calbury took the win, stopping 22 Raider shots. Matt Loveys turned away 32 Panther chances in the tough luck loss. Though little consolation in the standings, to date the Raiders have come the closest to handing the now 9-0 Panthers their first loss of the season. The twotime reigning league champions have won all of their others games by at least two goals and sport an overall goal differential of plus-40 (58 for, 18 against). On Friday the Raiders weren’t quite as crisp in their 5-2 home loss to the Pirates. The two sides traded goals early in the game, with Picton’s TJ Patterson and Jacob Murphy each had a first period goal, sandwiched around one from Napanee’s Devon King. Scott knotted the game at 2-2 with an early powerplay goal in the second but was quickly countered by
Picton’s Riley Reynolds and Will Harrison, each scoring less than five minutes later. Patterson iced the win with an early power-play goal in the third while the Raiders’ offense was shutout over the final 39 minutes of the game. Aaron Young picked up the win, stopping 26 shots. Loveys took the loss, allowing all five goals on 14 shots. He was replaced early in the third period by Kyle Martelle, who turned away the final nine shots of the game. Napanee will look to snap their mini two game slide this evening when they travel to Picton. Tomorrow night they will welcome the Panthers for their first trip to the SPC this season. Despite their back-toback losses, the Raiders are still second in the league with their 14 points. They trail Port Hope, which has 18. The rest of the league is still working towards the .500 mark with third place Picton at 3-4-1 (seven points), Gananoque at 3-5-1 (seven points), Amherstview at 3-6 (six points) and Campbellford still winless at 0-8.
NDSS Golden Hawks senior boys quarterback Curtis Lambert aired out a pass to Gabe Charlebois who in an attempt to make an overthe-shoulder catch inadvertently deflected it right into the arms of teammates Brock Vale, who ran it in for a touchdown. That play came during Thursday’s home game against the Sydenham Golden Eagles, pushing the score to 18-0 in an eventual 29-7 NDSS victory. That fortunate bounce is a perfect example for how things have gone for the senior Hawks recently, who after stumbling to an 0-2 record out of the gate are now 2-2 on the year. “I think that it comes down to the hard work,” senior boys coach Corey Bowen said of getting the breaks in their favour after nothing went their way in their first two games. “We preach to the guys that the play’s not over until it’s whistled down. For Brock to get to where the ball is, sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t. Today it went our way which is great.” That’s not to say the win was a fluke by any stretch, as the Hawks played a fundamentally sound game. As they say, luck tends to favour the prepared. Lambert opened the scoring with a quarterback sneak on the one yard line, plowing through the Golden Eagles’ defense for a touchdown. Later that same quarter he found Josh Parker in the end zone for a 13-0 advantage heading into the half. NDSS put the game away with the deflected pass to Vale, which seemed to take the wind out of Sydenham’s sails. The visitors would manage their only touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it was offset by one from Charlebois to close out the game. For the Hawks it’s been a complete night and day

difference for their offense, as they were held scoreless in two road losses but put up 56 combined points in their back-to-back victories. “We keep letting them know that this system we put in is going to work if you trust it and they’ve got to get behind that 100 per cent,” said Bowen. “That’s what they’ve done and that’s the reason our offense is finally starting to click and we’ve been able to put
points on the board. Saying that, it wouldn’t happen if not for our defense. We had one little lapse in judgement and it ending up costing us.” NDSS will look to remain undefeated in their house this week as they play their final home game of the regular season this afternoon against the 1-3 Bayridge Blazers.

HAWKS | Penalties costly for Jr. Hawks CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19 “You’re probably expecting to win but you still have to go out and play the 60 minutes of football. If you don’t, they’re a team that’s not just coming here for a sightseeing trip. They’re coming here to play football. I’ve scouted their team, they’ve definitely got some good players, they can execute their plays and put us on our back heels. We’ve got to be ready for this week. Knowing it’s our last home game and to get three wins at home, I don’t know if the
school’s ever done that.” Kickoff for that game is 3:30 p.m. In the junior game, the Hawks struggled to mount much offense against a tough Sydenham team, losing 21-6. Colby Webb had the lone touchdown for the home team, catching a pass from quarterback Brayden Aldridge. NDSS was its own worst enemy at times, drawing penalties at inopportune times with undisciplined play. “We knew it was going to be a tough game, Syden-

Napanee’s Jake Logan, a criminology and justice studies major at UOIT, scored the game-winning goal in Friday night’s home opener for the UOIT men’s hockey team, the Ridgebacks. His overtime goal gave the Ridgebacks their third straight win to open the season, giving them their first 3-0 start in the school’s history.

ham was coming in undefeated and in sole possession of first place,” said Hawks coach BJ. Hubble. “We knew our gameplan coming in and the guys really executed well on both sides of the ball. We played a strong game and I think we may have turned some heads keeping it within a touchdown right up until the end. We had some untimely penalties which negated some very large gains at various points in the game. It’s different if you can still score after a big penalty like that, but these ones came back to bite us a few times.” Defensively, the Hawks were able to hold the Golden Eagles to their fewest points of any of their four games. “Sydenham’s running back was putting up big numbers coming into this game, and we were able to stymie his production which is a huge pat on the back for our defense,” said Hubble. “Our offensive players were on the ball in this one coming off the field and sharing what they were seeing. We were able to use that information to attack specific areas and put up some great ball movement drives. Both running backs, Cal DuChene and Matt Ruttan, had a Adam Prudhomme-Staff big day. CHAMBERS - In memory of loving parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents, Madge (October 21, 2008) and George (February 7,1999). Our hearts are like a memory book It’s pages crystal clear, Holding all the loving thoughts of you, Recorded year after year. MEMORIAMS
BERRY - Kimberly Ann (nee VanDusen), October 21, 2009. “God’s Lent Child” I’ll lend you for a little while A child of Mine, God said. For you to love and nurture While she lives with you. It may be one or two years Or thirty eight or nine, But will you till I call her back Take care of her for Me? She’ll bring her charms to gladden you And should her stay be brief, You’ll have her lovely memories As a solace for your grief. I’ve looked the whole world over In search for teachers true And from the things that crowd life’s lane I have chosen you. Will you give her all your love? Nor think the labour vain? Nor hate me when I come to take This lent child back again? I fancied that I heard them say “Dear Lord, Thy will be done”, For joys the child will bring The risk of grief we’ll run. We will shelter her with tenderness, We’ll love her while we may, And for the happiness we’ve known Forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for her Much sooner then we’ve planned, We’ll brave the grief that comes And try to understand. We speak of you every day Kim, sometimes with tears and others with a smile. Lovingly remembered, Mom, Des and Craig.
KIMBERLY ANN BERRY (NEE VANDUSEN)
In loving memory of our “Mom” who has been in Heaven since October 21, 2009.
Beyond our smiles there lives a tear For the Mom we lost and loved so dear God whispered in her ear Believe in Me and have no fear Come with Me and take my hand I will take you to another land A place of peace, a place of light Don’t be afraid, just hold on tight Your days on earth are done but don’t be sad Remember all the good times you had Loved ones will join you, don’t despair You have many in Heaven waiting there. Leave your body, your soul is free That’s why you get to fly with Me.
Our hearts hold you dearly ‘Mom’ as we love and miss you every day, Alyssa and Jordan.

OSTER - David Jr. Promoted to Glory, October 17, 2006. When the autumn comes And leaves begin to fall, My heart grows sadly heavy And I miss you most of all. Ten seems a lonely number, Quickly fly the years. As summer passes and fall presses Come memories and tears. To us who remember you are very dear, We can close our eyes and draw you near, We can still see your face, your wonderful smile, On Memory Lane we can visit awhile. God blessed us with you, He called you away. We’ll be together in Heaven Some wonderful day. Love you forever, (I ‘member Davey). Mom.

picked up the win between the pipes. Makpah, a midget rookie, earned player of the game honours on the blue line. The Stars followed that up Saturday with a chippy win over Lakefield. Murray Craig was on his way to a shutout before the Chiefs, capitalizing on a prolonged goalmouth scramble, managed to find the back of the net in the dying minutes of the game. Taylor Stalkie scored a pair for Napanee, while Nick Yeomans netted his first of the year. Both Cal Doyle and Kyle Weese contributed with assists. The Stars turned to Milroy in net again versus Douro, and he made the
most of his start with a shutout. Lloyd and Closs had multi-point nights with a goal and two assists each, while Wilkinson and Stalkie each added goals of their own. The Stars have another busy week ahead. They travelled to Campbellford to face the Colts last night (results were not known before press time). They host the Tweed Hawks tonight at the SPC (Home Hardware rink) at 9 p.m. and the Centre Hastings Grizzlies on Saturday (Goodyear rink) at 6:30 p.m. Editor’s note: minor hockey coaches or managers can e-mail game reports to adam.prudhomme@gmail.c om
