NDSS student Jordan Bain mixed auto body paint colours perfectly to strike gold at the National Skills Competition in Edmonton earlier this month. That’s the colour of medal the judges awarded him for his ability to paint over scratched car doors, masking any damage. Bain was NDSS’ lone representative to the National Skills Competition, which saw high school students from across Canada complete various trade related challenges. Competing in the auto paint challenge, Bain was given a damaged car door and judged on his ability to repaint it. “They were judging us more on our procedure of how we did it and what we did to get it done,” said

Bain. “They also did judge us on the final project itself, but it was more on the technique.” Part of the challenge saw him having to match paints he was given to create the exact same colour. “They wanted to see our spraying technique, the way we did our metallics,” said Bain. “They wanted to see how we polished and what we did, same with the mixing of the paints.” Heading into the competition he had a general idea what they’d be asking him to do and was able to practice. “A lot of it was about safety,” said Bain. “There were a lot of safety infractions that you could get docked (points) on. If you were endangering someone else then you would get disqualified instantly.” Along with painting Bain also had to mask off parts of the door to make sure only a certain section of the car was painted. To get to the nationals Bain had to first win at the Limestone District level and then the provincial level in Waterloo. He credits the guidance of Craig Sindall, who teaches NDSS’

Transportation Technology and Colour Shop Focus Program as well as on-the-job learning he’s received at Beckwith Motors. The gold medal was Bain’s second at the national level, as last year he earned bronze. “It should help and be pretty good on my resume,” Bain says of the medals. His classmate, Chris Sutcliffe, also won gold at the Limestone District level and finished fourth at provincials. His skills are in auto body repairs. “I had to cut a quarterpanel and tact it on and weld it on,” said Sutcliffe. “Then we had to fix a crack in the bumper and measure the body of the car.” This year was his first time competing at the provincial level, calling it a stressful eight hours. He too developed his skills under the tutelage of Sindall, often repairing damaged cars from the school’s parking lot. “I practiced here for a couple of weeks and got pretty good at it,” said Sutcliffe. “Almost every day there’s something new that comes in.”

This season at the Sears Ontario Drama Fes-

tival, which sees high school students perform plays in front of judges, The Point earned two awards. Morris was given an award of excellence for her writing while the cast was given an award of merit for their ability to play characters much older than themselves. “We’ve had so many playwrights emerging this year,” said Marriott. “We wanted a way to showcase some of their work. This is the first time we’ve done something like this at the end of the year.

It’s 100 per cent student written and performed.” About 50 students are involved with the four plays and have been working on them since February. That hard work will be on display tonight and tomorrow with shows starting at 7 p.m. on both nights. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the school’s office or at the doors on the night of the performance. The shows will be held in Gym 1.
