2015 Federal Election

Candidates face off at Tyendinaga public meeting

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Three of the four HastingsLennox and Addington federal election candidates were in Tyendinaga on Thursday for an all-candidates meeting, outlining their respective platforms for the Oct. 19 vote. The NDP’s Betty Bannon, the Liberals’ Mike Bossio and

the Green Party’s Cam Mather were all on hand to take questions from the public at the Mohawk Community Centre. Conservative candidate Daryl Kramp was not in attendance. All four candidates were extended an invitation. Mather focused on the climate when outlining his party’s platform. “We’re not talking about climate change anymore,

BRIDGE WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL DR. JULIE AMEY 311 Bridge Street West, Napanee 613-409-PETS (7387) bridgewest@kingston.net www.bridgewestanimalhospital.ca

we’re talking about climate disruption,” said Mather. “What we’re discovering now is what climate scientists are calling ‘abrupt climate disruption’. This isn’t some theoretical problem in 2050 or 2100. It’s happening now.” Citing that July’s temperature was the hottest on record worldwide, warm temperatures in Alaska and the frigid winter that this region experienced last February, Mather said the Green Party is focused on helping to put an end to unpredictable climate. “That will be my focus when you send me to Ottawa, to put a price on carbon,” said Mather. He noted that while gas and carbon taxes would rise, Canadian citizens would get

a portion of that money rebated to them. While they’d be free to do with that rebate what they please, Mather says it is the Green Party’s hope that they would spend that money on making their homes and vehicles more every efficient. An offshoot of that would be creating work for Canadians in the home energy efficiency trade. New Democratic Party candidate Betty Bannon outlined a plan that included health care reform, repealing Bill C51, instituting a $15-a-day national child care program and protecting Canada’s natural resources. “Those of us who have ever demonstrated or protested, could be a ‘terrorist’ under Bill C-51,” said

Bannon, “particularly if you influence Canada’s revenue aspect of the world.” Bannon said the NDP would also repeal Bill C-10, the Tackling Contraband Tobacco Act. “If elected I would personally commit to raising you specific issues after consultation with you,” said Bannon. “Frankly, and I agree with your sign, smoking is not illegal yet.” Bossio spoke of the Liberals’ fiscal track record and outlined the party’s plan for investing in infrastructure and helping middle class families. “We have a plan that’s based on fairness and on investment,” said Bossio. “(It’s) a plan that will benefit low- and middle-income families, that could benefit veterans, that will benefit the climate and will benefit First Nations communities.” “Our $125 billion infrastructure plan will go towards physical infrastructure transit, will go towards social infrastructure like affordable housing, increasing the stock of housing and increasing by thousands the number of day care spaces that are available in this country,” added Bossio. Naturally, a large por-

tion of the evening focused specifically on what the candidates would do to address First Nations issues if elected. “I get a sense from the Truth and Reconciliation proceedings that Aboriginal peoples are not happy with the current government,” said Mather. “I think that’s what you’ll find is that Elizabeth May and the Green Party have a different approach to that. I think we very much feel a kinship because we both feel a kinship to the land and the importance to treating it well.” After the meeting Mather handed out a photocopied section of the party’s Vision Green policy book. Among the things promised in it is that Green Party MPs will honour Canada’s treaty rights with Aboriginal people, launch an inquest into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and ensure that every Aboriginal child has access to quality educational opportunities. Bannon stated the NDP has developed a timeline for when they would launch an inquest into murdered and missing Indigenous women.

Small towns not immune to incidents of domestic violence ‘It’s a significant issue for women and kids’: shelter manager

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

NE in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lives – it’s a sobering statistic to which this region is not immune. “I think people still think this is something that doesn’t happen in nice, little rural communities or doesn’t happen to particular social classes or those with a certain level of education, but it certainly is something that is very pandemic across all walks of life,” said Sue Weir, executive director of the Lennox and Addington Interval House, a shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence. “There is no community that is immune to domestic violence; there’s no social stratum that is immune to domestic violence. It’s something that even for quiet, little rural, Ontario communities. It’s still a significant issue for women and kids.” A recent case before the courts is just one of the latest instances. Last week, a 29-year-old Napanee resident was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 18 months probation after pleading guilty to two counts of assault against his spouse. He and his now-former spouse have a young child. The Napanee Beaver will not be using the names of those involved in last week’s case in order to protect the identity of the victim and child. The man was originally charged with six counts of

O

assault, four of which were on his spouse and two on their toddler, and one count of uttering threats. The other charges were dropped. “He would not let me leave our relationship,” his spouse told The Beaver in an interview after her former spouse was convicted. “I helped him open his store because he sabotaged me in everything he did and I thought, ‘If I help him do this then maybe he’ll stop — here, have your business, let me have mine,’ but he didn’t. It just got worse because he felt so powerful.” Weir said even though awareness of women’s shelters and services is increasing, a lot of women — like the one in Thursday’s court case — have difficulty leaving the relationship. However, Weir stresses coming to Interval House is a safe a secure option for those trying to leave an unsafe relationship — whether it’s a spousal or family dispute. “Women generally stay between eight and 10 weeks in shelter. It’s a secure building and while they’re there, the kids are involved in children’s programming and the women are involved in counselling,” Weir said. After that term, women can be assisted for another year or so in community dwellings until they are able to get back on their feet. “In Napanee, we have a 16-bed emergency shelter that provides family emergent response in terms of residential places to stay for women in terms of trying to escape domestic violence,”

Weir added. Weir said it’s hard to say whether domestic violence is increasing or decreasing; however, she did say better awareness of these programs has allowed more women to reach out for help. “If you look back 25 years ago compared to now, I think there’s probably a far greater awareness in terms of the issue of domestic violence and that there are other options,” said Weir, adding that women’s shelters are working with other social programs and municipalities in order to provide more services for women and children who use its services. “Even the last 10 years, we probably have about 100-125 women a year and between 60 and 80 kids a year through the shelter… We’ve seen almost 3,000 women through the shelter,” Weir said. The woman in last week’s domestic violence case said there is still a long way to go to make women feel safe asking for help in domestic violent situations. She said there is still a lot of stigma against victims of domestic violence. Stigma often leads to blaming the victim, causing even further damage than before the woman sought help, she explained. “It makes it dangerous for other women. Unfortunately, our society has a lot

of horrible, negative thoughts about women being crazy liars — it’s easy for people to just accept that and believe it, but that’s dangerous,” explained the victim in last week’s case. Weir said because of this, many women face isolation when dealing with domestic violence. They also do because many women move to different communities to start new, sometimes without friends or family to support them. OPP cracking down on drivers impaired by drugs BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

OOKING to curb a disturbing trend of motorists driving while impaired by drugs, Napanee OPP officers are enlisting the latest in drug identification technology to nab offenders. At the forefront of the crackdown is Constable Jamie Davis, a Drug Recognition Expert. Armed with a tool kit that would rival any doctor’s medical bag, he’s called on to the scene when officers notice a driver showing signs of being impaired but so no symptoms of being drunk. Using some simple yet effective methods, Davis says if a driver has taken any sort of drug, chances are he can detect it. Lately he’s been busy, getting called to the scene of two separate incidents where a driver was driving erratically but still managed to pass a field sobriety test. After running a few diagnostic tests himself, Davis was able to discover the drivers were under the influence of prescription dugs that were impairing their motor skills. “We’re encouraging the officers to have the (DRE) training so it’s a tool, said Davis. “That’s all it is, a tool to bridge from suspicion to grounds (for an arrest). It’s a tool that builds grounds for impairment. Davis, who is also a DRE instructor, is one of about 50 officers in the province that have the training to administer a drug recognition test. He says he’s been called to scenes from as far as Lancaster to Picton and everywhere in between. Alarmingly, he gets quite a few calls right here in Greater Napanee as well. It’s become a noticeable trend where members of the public reporting erratic drivers that turn out to be impaired by drugs. “The public has to be aware this is happening, said Cst. Jackie Perry, media relations officer with the Napanee OPP. “It’s not just with illegal drugs, it’s with prescription drugs. People mixing them, combining them with alcohol, or simply abusing them. To help stay ahead of the problem, the OPP has trained some of its officers to recognize the signs of impairment.

And while some savvy drivers might be able to fool a field sobriety test, Davis says there’s no way to cheat a drug recognition test. “We look at clinical indicators, said Davis. “There are certain things we can’t control. Things like heart rate, pulse rate, blood pressure, body temperature, muscle tone, pupil size, reaction to light. All told, Davis says he can document nine clinical indicators that can be used as concrete evidence when laying a charge. “It’s like going to the garage and getting a full work over, said Davis. “It’s a full diagnostics on your body. That’s what a DRE does. That evidence is significant now thanks to changes introduced by Bill-31, the Making Ontario’s Road Safer Act. Effective Sept. 1, the new act states that driving while impaired by drugs is now viewed no differently than driving while impaired by alcohol. Prior to this month they were viewed in very dif-

ferent lights and officers often lamented that it was hard to get a conviction on driving while impaired by drugs. “We now have sanctions that mirror alcohol-related driving offences, said Davis. “The sanctions for driving while impaired by drugs are now the same as alcohol. It involves your three-, sevenand 30-day suspension periods. It involves your 90-day automatic drivers license suspension. It involves your seven-day vehicle impoundment, re-education programs. It’s the same penalties. Multiple offences can also carry heavy fines and jail time as well. To avoid any risk, drivers are encouraged to read the labels of any prescription drugs and pay attention to ones that discourage driving while taking them. Davis says mixing even small amounts of alcohol with certain drugs or several types of drugs together can increase the potency of both to significant levels.

EDITORIAL

The value of a photograph E were powerfully reminded of the truthfulness of that old adage, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, when media around the world published the photo of Syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi, a three-year-old boy who, along with his fiveyear-old brother Galip and his mother Rehan, died while trying to cross the Aegean Sea from Turkey to Greece. Sadly, only the father, Abdullah, survived the ordeal. The photograph is obviously posing some (perhaps profound) political implications here in Canada. The Canadian government and the ruling Conservative Party have been taking considerable heat — fairly or unfairly — for their handling of the refugee crisis, particularly after the photo of Kurdi came to light. Regardless of those very real political implications (particularly given that there’s a federal election going on), it appears as though there is a broad desire for Canada to do more to support these refugees. After seeing that image, it’s difficult not to have any other desire. That’s where that searing image can, hopefully, do some good. It’s a tall order in today’s fast-developing news cycle, but if anything is going to jar folks from complacency, it’s something like that. Of course, that’s not to suggest that we must develop policy on the fly, based primarily on emotion. Rarely can such policy ever be considered sound policy. Nor does it even require a change of the government — no matter who forms the next government, the problems facing Syrian and the surrounding region will still exist, and will still require our action. At the same time, throwing our hands up in futility and proclaiming ‘there’s nothing we can do’ is hardly a sound option either. We certainly can’t solve all the world’s problems, but we can’t turn our back to them, either. We’re fortunate to live where we do, and enjoy the relative comfort and security that we do. That comfort makes us less attuned to the suffering of people in other parts of the world. The death of Aylan Kurdi — a purely innocent child caught up a devastating conflict — wakes us up to what’s really going on. It’s a tragedy, what happened to Kurdi, and what’s happening to all those other families being affected by this instability and conflict. But if there’s any good to come from this boy’s death, it’s that it will rattle our collective conscience and prompt us to step up to do more.

Second chance for turtles injured during road crossing Editor’s Note: The following is a new, monthly column designed to teach local residents about the wild animals that live among us. Marylin Kendall is writing the column for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, a Napanee-based facility that cares for injured wildlife. Most of us have seen turtles crossing the road in the late spring, early summer months. And many of us know why: they are travelling from waterways to higher ground to lay their eggs. And, sadly, we have all seen the many injured and dead turtles who don’t survive the journey across our busy roadways. But what you likely don’t know is that some of those turtles are picked up by caring passersby and taken to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre. If not too badly injured, they are rehabilitated; if not expected to live or already dead, the eggs the turtles are carrying are harvested, incubated and eventually hatched. It takes two-to-three months from harvesting for the eggs to hatch, depend-

ing on the type of turtle. During that time they are placed on a bed of vermiculate (to simulate the soil they may have been laid in) and kept at an appropriate temperature for their species. This year Sandy

Marilyn Kendall On The Wild Side Pines was aided in this endeavour by an innovative bright green incubator dubbed the ‘Turtle Maker,’ created by the Environmental Club of the Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute under the tutelage of science teacher Matt Saunders. This year more than 50 turtles were rescued. Snapping turtles carry between 35 and 40 eggs and painted turtles 10 to 12. That’s a lot of potential hatchlings. These baby turtles are kept in captivity for only a few days to make certain they are eating and then returned to the area in which their mothers were found. Releasing rehabilitated creatures back into

their natural habitat is key for maximizing their chances of survival and especially important now when so many wild species are endangered. It is standard practice at Sandy Pines for all rescued and rehabilitated wild creatures. Not all the eggs hatch successfully. Some of the baby turtles don’t survive the unnatural incubation process and others are born with deformities from the injuries their mothers sustained. Sue Meech, director of SPWC, often tries to educate the public about the consequences of human’s interference with nature. And she knows from experience that their attempts to intervene can never truly emulate nature. Sandy Pines has been involved in rescuing turtles and their offspring for five years. “We never planned to take this on,” said Sue Meech, director of SPWC, “but once started, it just grew.” That’s the way it goes at Sandy Pines: a need arises and they — often against all odds — find a way to address it.

The big spenders: Team Trudeau/Wynne Since the official campaigning for the federal election began, the Ontario premier began meddling in an area where she should not. That is by supporting Justin Trudeau, and pushing her way around by talking in derogatory fashion about the Conservatives and at times the NDP. What Kathleen Wynne is doing could be catastrophic for Ontario if Trudeau does not win. It takes more than curly hair, having pictures taken with babies and being a drama teacher to become the leader of a country. Wynne has done very little for Ontario that is positive. If I could list all of the negatives here, there would not be enough room in this column even if I had a full page with which to work. Wynne should keep her nose out of the federal election and pay attention to what is far more pressing for Ontarians. As you may have noticed, the free money continues to flow from the empty Ontario coffers, to appease friends and gain votes. That is not what we

Pierre Cliche

Cheers & Jeers need from our premier. Throwing money at any and all problems does not work. We continue to be a have-not province, due to poor decisions made over that last 10 years, which is truly embarrassing. The ridiculous, carefree spending by the Liberals and the waste of our tax dollars is very disturbing, but poor decisions continue to be made day after day. From my point of view,

we truly have too many socialist parties in Ontario — the Liberals and the NDP — although I think the Liberals take the top prize. Socialist governments do not work; look at Greece and other countries with similar governments. Further to this, we have, I believe, at the federal level, two socialist parties: the NDP and the new socialist Liberals. Should Trudeau, by luck, be elected, the spending spree that we cannot afford will begin in earnest. You can be sure this will happen because Trudeau has already said that he wonders what financial shape the Conservatives are currently in and worse, he has said that he plans to run a deficit for three years, before even attempting to balance the books. How the books will magically be balanced in three years is not known. We all know that running our finances by using a credit card is not the way to go. Budgets do not balance themselves – look what happened in Ontario when Bob Rae had that atti-

tude. Eventually we have to pay the piper. We, the voters, need to avoid listening to polls, to empty promises we can ill afford and instead, use our common sense to avoid expecting a government of the future to pay for our excessive spending as in the end. We are the government and we have to pay for our wish lists and expectations. We all need to contribute to what we have and refrain from thinking that we are entitled to anything we did not work to achieve. If our wish list is too long the result will be more tax hikes, continued added taxes and premiums for services. We cannot afford any more political gouging. This week, jeers to Kathleen Wynne for placing Ontarians in a very precarious position if the party she supports loses. She really needs to pay attention to Ontarians and respect our tax dollars. That is what we expect, and need our elected premier to do. Pierre Cliche, plcliche@sympatico.ca

Letter to the Editor

What kind of Canada do you want? Is there going to be an all candidates meeting to discuss the issues this year? Will the Conservative candidate show up? We have had nine years of Conservative policies and several things can be seen. First, transparency is out the window. ‘Hard on criminals’ does not include elected officials, who

now will get their pensions after being elected illegally. MPs speaking up for their ridings will not occur with Stephen Harper’s party. Is the new MP going to do anything for Napanee, or is he just plastering those signs everywhere in the hope that people will think there is no other party to vote for?

I hope people look to sign up and vote this election as it is important. Do we want a Canada that is closed to refugees, to see pictures of dead children, wondering how many others have died without their stories told, due to Harper’s new immigration policies? Is this the Canada we want, or do we

want to welcome those who will make Canada better by just being part of the community? I hope that Napanee steps up and looks to invite these people into our community. Vote this year, it does matter. Peter McGrath, Napanee

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago September 15, 1965

n Napanee’s Market and Police Committee were giving consideration to a suggestion that the town institute a system of one-way streets in order to alleviate traffic congestion. Both Mayor Lorne Smart and committee chairperson W. R. Douglas suggested that council should give the idea some thought. Other traffic ideas being floated included prohibiting left turns at Napanee’s busiest intersections — at Dundas and John Streets and Dundas and Centre Streets — on Fridays and Saturdays. Some councillors suggested that the traffic problems simply required better police enforcement and management during the heaviest periods. n The transportation committee of the Napanee District Collegiate School Board was investigating a report of overcrowding on one of its school buses. The board was advised that, in one instance, the bus had a total of 78 students on it. The maximum capacity for the bus, however, was only 40. On some of the heavier routes, it was not uncommon for students to have to stand in the aisle of the bus.

35 Years Ago September 3, 1980

n It was clear that the Lennox and Addington County Board of Education would have some new trustees in the upcoming term. At least two trustees had no intention of seeking re-election, including the board’s chairperson, Roy McDannold. The representative from North Fredericksburgh said that he wouldn’t let his name stand. Another outgoing trustee was Ezra Ball, the representative for the northernmost end of the county. Other trustees, meanwhile, said they’d like to seek another term, including Adolphustown/South Fred’s Lawson Staples and Bath/Ernestown/Amherst Island’s Jane Scott. n A visit to waters near L&A by Jacques Cousteau’s ship Calypso was struck by tragedy. A diver with the famous research vessel died while the ship was filming shipwrecks in Lake Ontario off southern L&A. Early reports suggested the crewmember died when he surfaced too quickly, causing an air bubble to form in his bloodstream. The Calypso was in the area on a project with the National Film Board regarding the evolution of the Great Lakes.

Kiwanis eye Napanee for new service club chapter BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

A district Kiwanis representative is looking for community support and membership applications to establish a Kiwanis group in Greater Napanee. Dennis Margueratt, Kiwanis Lieutenant-Governor for Eastern Canada, has been approaching some local residents, businesses and clubs to garner interest for a Kiwanis club in Greater Napanee. Mayor Gord Schermerhorn

has agreed to step up as the first member of the proposed Kiwanis club; however, there must be at least 15 people to start the club. Margueratt, who is based out of Picton, said he would also be a member of the Napanee club to help it get established. The club is dedicated to raising money within the community and return that money to the community in the form of children’s programs, said Margueratt. “We have determined that we’d like to form a club in Napanee, Margueratt said. “We did a

demographic survey of Greater Napanee and the average age in Napanee is 47 — so that means that there’s young families and lots of children, so it’s a great fit to have a Kiwanis Club here that focuses on kids. Margueratt said some ways the Kiwanis club in Picton has helped the community is by organizing regular community cleanup days and providing funds for a splash pad. He said a club in Napanee would determine how funds should be allocated in order to benefit local children and

youth. “Once the club is formed, the principle focus is having fun and also fundraising in the community. Doing such things as pancake breakfasts — Belleville does chicken barbecues — clubs generally come up with all kinds of innovative ways to raise money, said Margueratt. “In Picton we have a children’s Christmas party at the Salvation Army and we donate all the money that goes into hosting that Christmas party toward children that are generally underprivi-

leged in the community. We also have a scholarship program for young people that are going from high school to post-secondary, furthering their education, he added, giving examples of some of the ways a club in Napanee would benefit the community. Individual and corporate memberships are available. Margueratt said to contact him directly if someone is interested in becoming a member. He can be reached by email at Margueratt@gmail.com or by phone at 613827-0084.

LANDFILL FROM PAGE 1 He also requested that council instruct Waste Management to withdraw its application for a new landfill adjacent to the Richmond Landfill, and to ensure the BREC does not move forward. Most councillors agreed with Munro’s proposal; however, some felt that council should pass the motion after the ERT’s ruling is finalized and presented. That ruling is expected to be completed within a few months. In his report to council, Munro said that contaminated groundwater has affected neighbouring properties due to landfill leachate and that the BREC is proposed to be located just north of the existing Richmond Landfill, on the same fractured limestone base. His recommendation is that WM “permanently withdraw their application to locate a landfill on their property adjacent to the Richmond Landfill; and‌ that (the town) requests the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to take the necessary steps to end the BREC Environmental Assessment process.â€? Ward 4 Councillor Carol Harvey supported Munro’s report, saying, “I’d like to see council vote on passing the resolution tonight. I know I’m prepared to. I am in favour of this resolution and I think we should be an unwilling host.â€? However, Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester moved that council wait until the report is finalized, moving the following motion: “that council endorse the resolution proposed by the Concerned Citizens after the ERT final decision is received in writing, and further that Waste Management be advised that council continues to be an unwilling host.â€? The motion was carried unanimously. In other council news: n Harvey put forward the following notice of motion, which will be discussed at the Sept. 22 regular council meeting, scheduled to take place at the South Fredericksburgh Hall: “That council resolves to direct staff to limit the spending increase for the 2016 budget to zero per cent and direct staff to present options to achieve this.â€?

TAXES FROM PAGE 1 The cost of bringing Bellchamber in to moderate the past two meetings was $5,500. Chief Administrative Officer Ray Callery presented a staff report regarding a process for a tax policy review and recommended council discuss the matter further at the Sept. 22 regular council meeting. The report provides background information, financial implications, consultation recommendations, services and more. After reviewing the report, Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas said, “I’ve heard enough from the public; the public wants to hear from us now, adding that the seven elected officials sitting around the table should set aside a full meeting to talk about taxation. Schermerhorn said the opinion of each individual councillor on the matter should not be the focus and that public opinion should be. “As far as this council discussing this, what do you want to discuss? We have nothing to discuss. We are going to put a process in place that is going to take place and as far as council sitting here and saying, ‘I’m in favour of it

or not in favour of it,’ that’s not going to happen, Schermerhorn said in response to Lucas’s comment. “I don’t know where you’re coming from, if you’re trying to pigeonhole council members (to ask,) ‘Are you in favour of this or not in favour?’ That’s a bad way to start this off. We’re not going to make any head-

Napanee set for 34th annual Terry Fox Run Organizers aim to raise one dollar for every Greater Napanee resident

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

apanee will once again do its part to pay tribute to Terry Fox this month, holding its annual fundraising run in his name on Sept. 20. Starting from the Napanee Mall, participants will have the option to run, jog, walk or ride a five-kilometre or 10-km course. In keeping with Fox’s wishes the goal of the run isn't to see who is the fastest, but rather to unite the community and raise money for cancer research. Last year’s local run drew 129 participants and raised $9,250. Coupled with money raised at schools across the community, Greater Napanee was able to raise a grand total of $16,842. “The goal for the (Terry Fox) Foundation this year is to raise a dollar for everybody in Canada,” said Napanee Terry Fox Run organizer Gary O’Neil. “Our population (in Napanee) is right

N

around 15-16,000. It would be nice if we could get that goal just for the run itself. Maybe we’ll be able to get back there. But I look at it like every dollar we raise this year is a dollar they didn’t have.” For now, however, O’Neil says he’s thrilled that the money combined with the community run and the school runs is enough to make up one dollar for every Greater Napanee resident. “My hats go off to all the teachers who organize the school runs, because the schools alone raised $7,000 (last year),” said O’Neil. “That’s a lot of coins to count for teachers.” Various economical factors have provided a unique set of challenges for fundraising events and the Terry Fox Run is no different. Along with financial restraints, there’s also the fact that there are a lot more charities today than there were even just 10 years ago. O’Neil says he has no problem with that — he’s just happy to collect any dollar he can.

“Joanne Haffie has done a fantastic job in the past,” O’Neil said of the previous organizer, who ran it every year from 1986 to 2012 before handing it over to him. “Napanee has raised over $580,000 since we started in 1982.” For every dollar raised, 84 cents goes to cancer research. That’s one of the highest percentages of any charity in Canada. Last year the Terry Fox Foundation donated $26.5 million to cancer research. Registration for Napanee’s run will be held from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m., with opening ceremonies slated to begin around 10 a.m. Pledge sheets are available online by visiting the Facebook page titled ‘Terry Fox Run 2015-Napanee’. There’s also an option to make an online donation through the page as well. Merchandize celebrating the 35th anniversary of the original Marathon of Hope is also available on the site. O’Neil says at this year’s run, he’ll also be actively seeking out members inter-

ested in helping to form a committee for next year’s run. He’s particularly interested in younger volunteers who are well versed in Twitter and using Apps to generate more donations. “It doesn’t have to be a huge committee, but I will be having a form there,” said O’Neil. He says the commitment won’t be strenuous either, but any little bit will help in making the run successful for years to come. Started in 1981, the Terry Fox Run is held every September in communities across the world as a tribute to Fox’s original Marathon of Hope. Running with a prosthetic leg, he began his journey from St. John’s NFLD on April 12, 1980. His illness forced him to stop his run just outside of Thunder Bay on Sept. 1. He passed away less than a year later on June 28, 1981. He was 22 years old. Though he didn’t complete his run, he started a global movement to help fight cancer.

NDSS Jr. Golden Hawks waste no time prepping for KASSAA season Hawks take the field on first day of school BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

oming off by far their best season in recent memory, the NDSS Golden Hawks junior football team will have their work cut out as they aim for an encore. Last year’s team went 33 in KASSAA play, advancing to the AAA semifinals before losing to the Regi Panthers. The Hawks wasted no time in preparing upcoming season, taking to the field on the first day of school to run through some drills. That training may come in handy as the team projects as one with plenty of rookie faces. “We’re a young, inexperienced team,” said Hawks head coach Dave McRae.

C

“Many of the starters were Grade 10s who graduated (to senior). We’re hoping that a bunch of guys who have never played before learn to play.” The coaching staff is hoping to build off the momentum of last year’s success as they look to solidify Napanee’s reputation as a formidable team in the league. Long overmatched by some of the established clubs, last year marked real tangible progress for NDSS on the gridiron. This year’s group will have a bit of an advantage over previous junior teams, as some of the players already have some game experience. Prior to this season it was rare to see Grade 9 players who have actually played an organized game of football. “We have guys who have played Thousand Island Minor Football,” said McRae, referring to the newly formed Loyalist Mavericks that was comprised of many NDSS students. “That generated some interest in the

sport and we have a bunch of their guys out there.” Though they are yet to get into a full gear practice, the Hawks were able to work on tackling and blocking drills, as well as some of their offensive plays. The Hawks will continue to run drills throughout the month ahead of the KASSAA season opener, which is expected to begin the third week of September. Until then, McRae says he’ll still gladly accept new recruits who haven’t quite made up their mind about whether they want to suit up for the team this fall or not. The KASSAA season for all fall sports is expected to be released next week. In the meantime all athletic directors will meet next Tuesday with a coaches meeting next Thursday. NDSS’ senior football team will begin their full gear practices next week. Other fall sports include girls’ basketball, field hockey, boys’ volleyball, cross country running and golf.

Enterprise’s field of dreams Rural softball team experiences huge revival BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

S recently as three years ago, Enterprise’s minor softball association was on life support, boasting just 13 players. This season, however, thanks to some dedicated volunteers, registration number increased more than five fold for the recently completed season with 76 players signed up for seven different teams. Leading the revival was Joe Payne, who was instrumental in first sprucing up the ballpark and then getting the kids interested in the sport. As the numbers began to climb he began recruiting more volunteers to coach the ever expanding teams. He stepped up to the plate at just the right time as rumours began to swirl about what was to become of the neglected Enterprise diamond.

With a 4-1 win over Omega Fit Club in the Tier Four championship game, the Napanee Thunder women’s soccer team captured the Kingston Women’s Soccer Club division title. The win capped off a perfect season for the Napanee club, which didn’t lose a single game in the regular season. With their perfect record and championship title the Napanee club now earns a promotion to the KWSC’s Tier 3 division for next season.

“Moscow ball diamond is overgrown, it looks like a field,” said Rob Fenwick, one of the volunteer coaches that was recruited by Payne. “Centreville pulled their ball diamond… It was only a matter of time before Enterprise lost theirs.” Fenwick says Payne didn’t just stop at revitalizing the ballfield but also organized a fundraiser to cover the costs of a brand new set of uniforms for the Thunder players. “These kids look like they’re pros, they really feel like they’re part of something special,” said Fenwick. “When they go to school they talk about ball games, they bring their gloves to school. It’s really cool. It’s like a complete revival.” Fenwick says keeping the sport alive in the rural community is important for the hamlet where there are few clubs aimed at youth. “All you usually do is lose services in the rural area,” said Fenwick. “It’s

nice to see something making a comeback.” It also offers kids a chance to interact with their peers outside the classroom and in a fun and healthy setting. “Kids nowadays, they’re seated in front of screens, they don’t understand the simplicity of getting out and throwing a ball into a glove,” said Fenwick. “They need that. Someday they’re going to have to use their mind and think about what’s coming next and that’s what ball teaches you. It’s like chess.” The season wrapped up last month with their year end tournament. In the meantime he says the sport is continuing to grow in Enterprise with several parents already approaching him about signing up for next year. For information on the upcoming season parents and players can search Enterprise Thunder Minor Ball on Facebook.

nearing Olympic berth Doornekamp chips in off the bench Beaver Sports

Canada’s men’s basketball team took a huge step closer towards qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games on Tuesday night, rolling past host team Mexico 94-73 at the FIBA Americas Championship. Aaron Odessa’s Doornekamp played 15 minutes, sinking one of the two free throw attempts he made while adding two assists and a steal. He also had two rebounds. With the win the Cana-

dians were 3-1 in second round pool play, earning them a spot in the semifinals and a shot at a direct entry into the finals. The top two teams at the tournament will qualify for the Olympic games in Rio. For the tournament Doornekamp has played 82 minutes over six games with 15 points scored. On defense he has 29 rebounds while adding 11 assists. NBA reigning Rookie of the Year and Toronto native Andrew Wiggins is leading the team with 112 points.

Loved, missed and remembered every day by your loving wife Marg and family.

Always loved and never forgotten, Wesley, Joyce and family. LOSEE - In loving memory of my dear nephew, David Earl, who passed away September 5, 2014. Thursday, September 10, 2015 MEETING FROM PAGE 2 “Within the first 100 days of being elected we will call for an inquiry into the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls,” said Bannon. “This has been called for by many Canadians, First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders and every province and territory and it is yet to be done.” Bossio brought up the 2005 Kelowna Accord when talking about what the Liberals would do for the Aboriginal community. “The Liberal Party, under Justin Trudeau, is committed to restarting nation-to-nation dialogue, along the lines of the Kelowna Accord,” said Bossio. “It was the first time in Canada’s history that all levels of government and all of the national chiefs had agreed to an agreement that laid out a platform looking forward that would engage in

bringing our Aboriginal community to the level in this country that they should have been at for years and years and years.” Bossio says the party is also planning a $2.6 million investment in education, including a revamping of school’s history courses. “We’re going to have a discussion with the provinces and territories about including in the curriculum more about Aboriginal and treaty rights,” said Bossio. “More about residential schools. More about the culture and the gift the Aboriginal community gives to Canada.” When the microphone was turned over to the audience for questions, the issue of bringing a casino to the territory was brought up. When asked if their parties would support it, the candidates said if it was determined by the community that it was wanted, they

would explore that option. Though there were few young voters in attendance, the question of what the candidates would say to the youth was asked. “Frankly, I probably wouldn’t talk to a youth any differently than I would an ordinary voter,” said Bannon. “I would probably stress post secondary education, how to get it, where to get it, it has to be funded and why it’s important to vote.” Mather focused on the job market. “There has been a whole series of free trade agreement over the years that were signed by Brian Mulroney,” said Mather. “The Liberals said they were going to cancel it and they didn’t. We’re seeing good jobs those people would probably would have wanted go south or to Asia. That’s unfortunate, there’s a feeling of helplessness with this generation.

The good jobs and those good union jobs, there’s fewer and fewer of them.” Mather said the youth vote is a particularly important one to his party. Citing a Nanos poll, he noted that if only voters under the age of 24 had voted in the last election, Elizabeth May would be Prime Minister. “The reality is I don’t think the existing parties are addressing that demographic, I believe the Green Party does,” said Mather. “There’s only one party looking down the road to the future, and it’s

the Green Party.” Bossio commented on the youth unemployment rate of the riding. “In this riding we’ve got one of the highest child poverty rates in the whole province,” said Bossio. “When you’ve knocked on as many doors as I have and you see how people are hurt, it really hits home that we’ve got to do something… Opportunities exist out there for health care, education and tourism.” All three candidates stayed after the meeting to chat with those in atten-

dance. An all-candidates meeting will be held in Napanee on Oct. 1, from 7-9 p.m. at the Strathcona Paper Centre. When contacted by the Beaver, Conservative candidate Kramp says he intends to attend the Napanee meeting. He cited “too many commitments with (his) own campaigning” as the reason why he was unable to attend the Tyendinaga meeting. He says he’ll be attending Bancroft, Madoc and Napanee all candidate meetings between now and Oct. 19.

Getting it right with window choices Window dressing is the balance between the outside world and your home. It is the do-it-yourself light control. Curtains or drapery can obscure structural imperfections or eclipse an undesirable view. Window dressings shield us from neighbors in urban areas; shade us from the baking sun and keeps out the chill of winter nights. But bear in mind, too, that windows are important architectural features in a

room, and that you may not wish to cover them up so much as make a feature of them. Window dressing is not only framing the view outside or co-ordinating the scheme with other furnishings in your room; if the windows themselves are unusual or noteworthy, the way in which they’re dressed should not detract from their intrinsic merit. To give your windows the treatments they deserve, give some kind of

nod to the architecture of your home and complement the framework of the window. Furnish windows in accordance with the room’s function and with the degree of natural light. Harmonize or consciously contrast its style with the walls, floors and furnishings, but make it an integral part of your overall decorative scheme rather than a casual afterthought. Tall and narrow windows look good in just about

every context. Flat Roman shades accentuate the frame, and curtains with plenty of material show off their grace; only top-heavy pelmets are to be avoided. Treatments that extend beyond the sill to the floor act as a visual extension for windows that stop at chairrail height or are centered on a wall. Making Roman shades or curtains from a translucent fabric filters light but blurs it where the window sill ends.

For arched windows, suspend drapes from the ceiling. I generally discourage using more than one type of window treatment in a room. Mismatched windows present problems of asymmetry and proportion. Rooms with small windows and French doors or dadoheight windows and oversized patio doors are not uncommon but are ill-suited to uniform window dressing. Use drapes or shades made from the same fabric or colour as a means of relating different windows in a room. Light is a wonderful house guest; it is bright, illuminating, warm, cultivated and never stays too long in one place, casting shadows and changing in intensity throughout the course of the day. Finding the right treatment for your windows and your requirements is an interconnected decision.

Top 5 renovation tips to create more space in your home (MS) — As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up to a larger home is on the upswing across the country, especially as markets remain hampered by tight inventory levels. As a result, more and more Americans are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of relocating. In fact, some forecasts predict that 2015 renovation spending could exceed the record of $324 billion set during the peak of last decade's housing boom. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home. 1. Finish an unfinished basement. A basement renovation can hold limitless potential and increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theatre, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapour permeable, dimensionally stable and mold and moisture resistant. Many contractors use Roxul Comfortboard IS semi-rigid sheathing board paired with Comfort-

batt batt insulation to combat thermal bridging and protect against mold and mildew growth. An added benefit of this type of mineral wool insulation is that it’s also fire-resistant to 2,150 F. For interior walls and ceilings, Safe ‘n’ Sound insulation is ideal because of its ability to absorb noise and indoor traffic sounds, ensuring your newfound space is a peaceful one. 2. Create a more open-concept feel with light and colour. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering windows, in-

stalling French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint color for walls, trim and moldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel. 3. Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-load-bearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger, improve flow, lighting and the function of your home. 4. Convert your garage into usable living or work space. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage –– and is often a walk-in headache. Convert your garage (or a portion of it) into another living space, guest bedroom or home office. Install carpet and quality thermal insulation such as Roxul Comfortbatt to block outdoor noise and keep in warmth. 5. Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dual-purpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budgetfriendly way to save on space while staying organized.
