A long-standing barrier to development in both Deseronto and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory was knocked over on Thursday. Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Mike Bossio announced that just less than $2.5 million was being earmarked for upgrades to the Deseronto water treatment plant through the Small Communities Fund. The grant includes contributions from both the federal and provincial governments. Deseronto Mayor Norm Clark didn’t mince words when it came to describing what the grant meant for the community. “This has saved the town,” he said. “If we hadn’t got the grant, I didn’t know what we were going to do. We were running out of water… for development and so on. This will provide development for the town and help with our neighbours, the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. This solves a lot of problems. This gives us relief. A lot of relief.” The water plant currently services not only Deseronto but more than 300 homes on the MBQ. For several years, however, the water plant has been over-capacity, not only stretching its ability to meet its current requirements but preventing development. Clark said that he had met with Bossio “six or seven times” to discuss the future of the Deseronto Water Plant.

Water levels dangerously low across region BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

While lawns across the region may now be showing signs of renewed life thanks to recent rainfall, it has not been nearly enough for Quinte Conservation to lift its Level 3 water condition within its jurisdiction. On Monday, Quinte Conservation advised local residents that in spite of heavy rains over the past week, river flows remain far weaker than normal; further, based on seasonal precipitation trends, those low flows could continue for some time to come. The conservation authority says it’s still receiving reports of rural residential wells running dry. “Under normal conditions our groundwater levels would decline through October. This year it will be worse. People on private wells will need to be careful with their water use and monitor their wells in case they should go dry,” said Christine McClure, Quinte Conservation’s Water Resource Manager. A Level 3 low water condition indicates a failure of the water supply to meet demand. Restrictions on water use may be imposed by municipalities or under the provincial Water Resources Act. conditions are ranked as Level 1, 2 or 3 based on a prolonged period of low flows or precipitation. A Level 1 is the least severe and Level 3 is the most severe. The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority, which looks after southern Greater Napanee and Loyalist Township, also still has its severe drought advisory in place as well. Quinte Conservation has asked all residential and business water users to reduce their water usage by 50 per cent during the drought, until the water supply has been replenished. “We are getting a lot of questions recently about how much rain we need to bring the area out of this severe low water condition,”said McClure. “The situation is not as clear cut as being able to say a particular amount of rain will help. Our water levels and flows are so low now that it is important for the area to receive a steady amount of rain over a number days. The recent rainfall caused a small increase in stream and river flows, but those are already declining. Individual rainfall events are not having a significant impact on the situation.” One such event came on the weekend, when a series of powerful thunderstorms rolled through the region. “Over the weekend, the Picton area received 35 millimetres of rain — the most in the watershed. Most areas received less than 25 millimetres of rain. We need

significant sustained rainfall over several days all across the watershed in order to replenish our rivers and streams.” Quinte Conservation confirms low water conditions using two criteria: precipitation and stream flow. In order to move out of the Level 3 low water condition the Quinte Conservation watersheds need to receive a great deal more slow, steady rain to make up for the deficit experienced earlier in the year. Significant rainfall is required to see the flows increase in rivers and streams. Quinte Conservation is encouraging any individuals or businesses in the Quinte watersheds who experience problems or hardships, such as wells going dry, to contact Quinte Conservation by calling 613-968-3434 or 613354-3312 and dialing extension 129. Reports can also be emailed to info@quinteconservation.ca. These reports will help the organization track the impacts of the drought. Similarly, in the CRCA watershed, contact 613-546-4228 or 1-877-956CRCA(2722), ext. 241, or fill in the survey on our website www.crca.ca/drought. While that recent rainfall hasn’t been enough to lift the drought advisory, it has been enough for Greater Napanee Emergency Services to drop its fire ban. On Monday, the fire department announced that open air burning is no longer prohibited, so long as the property owner has a burn permit and is following all applicable bylaws.

WATER | ‘Over capacity for way too long’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “I’m overjoyed that this day is here. I think I’m going to go home and drink water from now until tomorrow, because for a while there, I really didn’t know what was going to happen to Deseronto as far as the water situation is concerned,” said Clark. The MBQ will be contributing $1.224 million to the project. “The Deseronto plant has been in need of some upgrading now for a number of years, if not decades,” said MBQ Chief R. Donald Maracle.

“It has been a very good working relationship between the two communities,” he continued. “Communities that currently have very small populations have to find partnerships like this in order to supply the community’s needs… We all share the same needs for growth and economic development, so that our region will have prosperity and jobs for our citizens.” Thursday’s announcement also included $230,000 set aside for upgrades to the Marmora and Lake water and wastewater system. “This water plant was running way over capacity

for way too long. Now, not only are they going to be able to achieve the capacity levels that they need, they’re actually going to have enough to expand, for both communities,” said Bossio, who added that he worked with local MPP Todd Smith to lobby provincial government ministers in support of the project. The Deseronto and Marmora projects are two of 35 infrastructure projects in Ontario, valued at $141 million, that are happening

under the Small Communities Fund, which is dedicated to communities with 100,000 or fewer residents. The federal government has pledged $120 billion in infrastructure investment over the next 10 years. “We need to make strategic investments in infrastructure so that we can increase growth, we can increase productivity, so that when our corporations utilize them, they’re able to compete in this world,” Bossio said.

Hydro ‘relief’ is expensive

J. Earl Morrison, Owner-Publisher, 1953-1978

Having only recently been stung in a by-election loss in a riding that had never gone Progressive Conservative, the governing Ontario Liberal government swung into action to address the main Combined in 1965 issue of that local campaign: the high cost of hydro. with The Napanee Indeed, they really pulled out all the stops. PreExpress (EST. 1861) and The Deseronto mier Kathleen Wynne prorogued the legislature, Post (EST. 1904) officially ending the session and starting a new one. Going into that Throne Speech, it was hinted JEAN MORRISON that the speech would contain the announcement of relief for beleaguered hydro customers, directly OWNER & addressing the one issue that dominated that byPUBLISHER election. So, at first blush, it might be considered praiseSALES MANAGER worthy for the government to be responsive to its SCOTT JOHNSTON residents. But that’s at the most superficial of levMANAGING EDITOR els. The scheme itself presents some rather puzSETH DUCHENE zling questions. BUSINESS MANAGER First off — how did the government not know DEBBIE MCCANN how the rising cost of hydro were a drain on Ontario residents before the by-election? Of course, when that rebate is effectively provided by our own money from the provincial treasury, at a drain of $1 billion a year, it’s clear that the ‘relief’ being provided isn’t really relief at all. In reality, it’s just a payment deferred, and it’s another pressure on the provincial pocketbook that is already badly overburdened. And when PC Leader Patrick Brown characterized it as a ‘band-aid solution’, it’s difficult to argue with him. There are a number of systemic problems with Ontario hydro’s network that makes it an extremely expensive system to run; it would require significant changes and significant reforms of the system, likely over a number of years, to translate to Napanee Beaver - 40005335 real, meaningful relief for hydro customers. The Town of Greater Napanee partnered with the Canadian Diabetes Association to install Red Clothing Donation Bins at their Roblin and South Fredericksburg landfills. The ‘Adventure Collection’ In an effort to help promote the County of Lennox and Addington’s adventure tourism projects, the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries developed a ‘library of things’ with a specific focus on items that allow users to try out the activities and events being marketed by the county. This collection, which we now refer to as the ‘Adventure Collection’, includes telescope lending to support the L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area, GPS units to support the annual Discover L&A MEGA Geocaching event, and bicycles so patrons can try out the impressive local trail network. All of the items in this collection are available for patrons to borrow free of charge using their library card. Thanks to the sponsorship of the Tamworth Erinsville Community Development Committee, we began this project in 2014 by acquiring a SkyWatcher 6 Dobsonian telescope for our Tamworth Branch. This is the branch closest to the L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area, which is the most southerly point in Ontario to view the stars in a pristine night sky unsullied by light pollution. This telescope, which would become just the first in our fleet, is huge. We soon found that it was, in fact, too large to be suitable for regular travel between branches. In order to meet demand across the County, we next purchased a slightly smaller telescope (a 6 Dixon) that is available to

reserve and be borrowed from any of our other branches. Finally, we recently acquired a third telescope as a donation from a patron. It has also been added to our floating collection so it can travel throughout the county.

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes

right! This past spring we started adding bicycles to our Adventure Collection. L&A Community Bike Shop, a local non-profit that refurbishes and donates bikes to members of the community, generously provided us with two bicycles that are housed at our Napanee Branch. The L&A Community Bike Shop works closely with the local OPP detachment, which gives them bikes that have been seized or gone unclaimed. Adding bikes to our collection was a natural choice as there is a local trail network consisting of 12 looping routes (600 kilometres) of paved roadway — a major tourist draw to our County. The bikes circulate with helmets, bike locks and plenty of bike safety literature. Quality telescopes, bicycles, and GPS units are, of course, significant financial investments for a person casually interested in trying out a new hobby. Through the Adventure Collection, the library offers patrons the ability to experience (for free!) the tourist draws that bring people to our County from around across Ontario, the Country, and the world. To learn more about these collections or the tourist draws the County of Lennox and Addington has to offer, visit http://www.countylibrary.ca/adventurecollection/.

Next, we purchased four Garmin eTrex GPS units, using some of our Ontario Library Capacity Fund through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport. In this circumstance, GPS units are used for geocaching, an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use navigation to hide and seek containers, called ‘geocaches’ or ‘caches’, at specific locations marked by coordinates. Basically, it is a treasure hunt in which people of all ages eagerly partake. As well, it is an activity with a surprising (and growing!) number of devotees. The County of Lennox and Addington is home to the largest annual geocaching event in Canada (the ‘Discover L&A County MEGA Geocaching Event’, which was held a couple weeks ago) but is also a destination for geocachers yearround. To further support this initiative, we have set up “caches” at some of our Catherine Coles is the library branches… and if you think this sounds eerily simi- Manager of Library Services lar to Pokémon Go, you’re for L&A.

Cemetery a link to the past By Jane Scott L&A Historical Society He proudly stood in the August evening twilight viewing the grassy slope leading down to the river with the cattle dotting the pasture. Glancing to his right, the new stone home was almost completed. With a satisfied sigh, John turned towards home. A few days later after a fall from a wagon on this farm, John died at the age of 74. The year was 1828. His death was recorded in the 1828 British Gazette in Kingston, Ont. John C. Carscallen had been born in Ireland and sailed with his parents Edward and Elizabeth Hill Carscallen to New York, settling near the New York/Vermont border. His father, John, and younger brothers remained loyal to the Crown, with John being granted in 1805 with 200 acres in Camden Township. In times before church cemeteries, people were buried on family farms or nearby neighbour’s burial grounds. Distances to other family burial sites were difficult to travel so family members were not always buried in the same family plot. The other Carscallen family plot was in North Fredericksburg where his father, mother and family were presumably buried. John C. Carscallen’s burial site was on a knoll a short distance from the future stone house. A stone or wooden cross probably marked the grave. The property eventually changed ownership and over the years other family members and neighbours found their resting place in this cemetery. The cemetery locally has been known as the Carscallen Cemetery, the Bell Cemetery, the Finkle

A stone is carved at the Carscallen-Hinch cemetery on County Road 1. A dedication ceremony is planned for this Saturday. Cemetery, the Greer Cemetery, Mr. Greer’s Cemetery or the Hinch Cemetery. James Hinch purchased the property in 1885. In 1897, a grandson of John C. Carscallen living in New Jersey purchased the area of the cemetery and a right of way. For 119 years, the Hinch family descendants have overseen this cemetery. Gerald Hinch last year, learned from Cora Reid, a well known Lennox and Addington genealogist that some 20 years ago, at a Bell Family Reunion, an idea was discussed of placing a plaque to commemorate the pioneers who were buried at the Hinch farm. Gerald contacted a Bell descendent and together initiated a plan to fulfill this idea. A committee, composed of Lawrence Bell, Lynn Bell, Rene and Sharon

Cadieux and Cora Reid was formed to carry out the project. Known to be buried is John Carscallen, his wife Esther Fraser (daughter of Daniel Fraser), William Bell, Junior and his wife Ann Carscallen, (sister of John), Phillip Geier Switzer in 1854 at age 33 (has the only visible headstone), grandson of William and Ann Bell, with his brother James Bell Switzer. Presumably, Dr. Francis Purcell and his wife Jane Dillenbeck Purcell (wife also of James Switzer) and granddaughter of John Carscallen are thought to be in this plot. Since the completion of the site, Gerald Hinch recently had dowsers witching the plot and stated to have found over 30 burial locations. The cemetery, now called the Carscallen-Hinch

Cemetery, has a completed memorial plaque on a pioneer rock with a perimeter chain demarcating the area. Thank you to the Committee, Gerald and Jim Hinch for carrying on this noble endeavour. There will be a dedication ceremony this Saturday at 1:30 at the Hinch farm at 2455 Camden Road, County Road 1 East. Descendants and interested public are welcome to attend. The Lennox and Addington Historical Society has partnered with the Carscallen-Hinch Committee to assist in completing this landmark occasion. Anyone interested in making a donation to the Carscallen-Hinch Cemetery or wishing to attend the ceremony (bring a chair), please contact Jane Scott 613 3786405.

Letter to the Editor

Rain welcome, but questions remain My wife Mary Lou and I often say that all the news on television and in the newspapers seems to negative. I would like to tell you something positive. After the rain we had on Saturday night, we finally have enough water in our ponds to water our cows again for a short little while, as long as the next good rain is not too far away.

O O K I N G

I still do not understand why the Greater Napanee water board, under the extreme dry whether conditions we had, was apparently unable to get permission from the Ministry of the Environment to let us use a fire hydrant and put a hose on it to put water in our pond. I have estimated that the trucks we had to use

instead to bring that water from the Napanee water plant used somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 livres of fuel to deliver this water to our ponds, all the while unnecessarily polluting the air and the environment with smoke and exhaust emissions. I thought the MOE was there to protect our environment. If the MOE messes even

just this simple little problem, how then can we trust them to get the big things right? However, we have some water in our clean and much bigger pond. And I hope we will not be faced with this situation for a long, long time.

We want to hear from you! The Napanee Beaver welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be no more than 300 words, and all letters must be signed. Send your letters to beaver@bellnet.ca, or to 72 Dundas St. E., Napanee, ON, K7R 1H9

■ A long-running counterfeit money scheme looked as though it was coming to an end, thanks to the Napanee OPP. Police made two arrests in connection with the passing of some $700 in fake bills, taking a husband and wife from Toronto into custody. The OPP were alerted to the couple after they attempted to use one of the phony bills at a service station located just north of Highway 401. A number of raids and seizures were then conducted in connection with the Napanee incident across the province. ■ A 29-year-old father of four young children was killed in a head-on accident south of Napanee on Hamburg Road. Two other men were also injured in the accident, one critically. The 21-year-old was taken to L&A County General Hospital before being transferred to Kingston General Hospital; another, 39, was recovering well at the Napanee hospital Both of those men were travelling in a separate vehicle. A fourth man, who was a passenger in the car driven by the victim, was treated and released from hospital.

35 Years Ago September 15, 1981 ■ Lennox and Addington County council was warned that acid rain was having a very detrimental effect on lakes in the county, particularly in the northern section of L&A. John Uliana, the planner for the county, told council that many of the county’s lakes were particularly sensitive to the impact of acid rain, and said that many of them could be ‘dead’ within 10-20 years. He said that, if that were to occur, it would have a negative impact on the tourism-oriented businesses in the county. Because of the international nature of the problem, he said that action needed to be taken at the federal level to address it. ■ A Deseronto girl was injured in a prankgone-wrong on a local school bus. The 13-year-old girl was struck in the mouth with a can of spray deodorant. According to the report, a 17-year-old girl was sprayed with the can by some boys as she was exiting the school bus. She picked up the can and threw it at the culprits, only to miss them and hit the 13-year-old girl. Several of her teeth were knocked out. The police indicated that their investigation was continuing, and charges were pending.

Ailing pooch needs support ahead of surgery BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

Maggie, a pug/beagle mix, is suffering from a large bladder stone, and will require about $2,000 in veterinary costs.

Part pug, part beagle and an all-around happy-go-lucky attitude make up Maggie the puggle, who is set to undergo surgery to remove a large bladder stone today. The six-year-old dog is currently under the care of the Lennox and Addington SPCA, which is appealing to the public for donations to help cover her medical costs. “The surgery itself is about $700, said Kristin Mullin, animal centre manager with the L&A Branch of the Ontario SPCA. “Then

we had to pay for the X-rays, the after care and all the medications. She’s going to be on a special diet. All in all it’s going to be about $2,000 altogether. Aside from her bladder stone, which is about the size of an egg, Maggie is still playful and full of energy. Though she will require a bit of extra attention following her surgery, Mullin says she will still make a great family pet. “She’ll be special needs because she’ll be on a special urinary food, said Mullin. “But we’ll find a home for her. She’s happy and wiggly and sweet.

Harvey hops into Selby theatre Classic comedy to open 2016-2017 LCT season BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Seth DuChene-Staff

Elwood P. Dowd (played by Tom Pawlick) gets a somewhat predictable response from Sandy Turcotte’s character when she’s introduced to Dowd’s invisible friend, a six-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. Sister Veta (played by Rosemary Mallen) and Miss Johnson (played by Laini Montpetit) look on. Harvey opens on Sept. 23 at the Lennox Community Theatre.

The Napanee Crunch is looking for Novice and Atom aged players for our house league team.

The 2016-2017 season starts in late September. If your daughter is interested in playing for the Crunch please contact Janet Pringle jpringle@kos.net or Mark Ford coachmford@gmail.com

The Lennox Community Theatre is turning back the clock with its season-opening production starting next week. Harvey, a classic comedy piece written by Mary Chase, was the first play shown at LCT’s Selby theatre 23 years ago. Further, it’s being directed by one of the castmembers from that show 23 years ago, Shirley Steward, and it’s opening on the same night it did back then: Sept. 23. Steward admits to experiencing more than a little bit of nostalgia in helping to bring Harvey back to the LCT stage. That said, it’s not exactly ‘old hat’, since this production represents Stewart’s first as a director. “It’s totally new for me… It’s a different vantage, but it’s also a labour of love for me, because I just love this play and it holds great memories for me,” she said. The play, which earned Chase the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and was brought to the silver screen in 1950, cer-

tainly gives Steward, cast and crew something to work with. “It’s a whimsical play about a fellow by the name of Elwood P. Dowd, and he had lived with his mother in her mansion,” explains Steward. “When the mother passes away, his sister Veta and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, come to stay with him. Veta is eager to find a man for her daughter; her efforts, however, are stymied by the presence of Elwood, who happens to have an invisible friend: a six-foot rabbit named Harvey. Elwood isn’t shy about introducing Harvey to anyone he meets. “This is a bit of an embarrassment to Veta… So, she thinks the only option she has is to have him incarcerated in a sanitarium,” says Steward. Elwood is played by Tom Pawlick, a newcomer to the theatre. Stage veteran Rosemary Mallen, meanwhile, takes on the role of Veta. Myrtle Mae is played by Shari Maracle, Dr. Chumley is played by John Betts, Nurse Kelly is played by Maggie Zätterberg and Miss Johnson is played by Laini

Montpetit. Sandy Turcotte is playing three different characters, while Wihse Green is playing two characters. After about six weeks of rehearsing, Stewart says everything is coming together for opening night. “Last night was the first night offbook, and they did amazing. It’s hard to tell the veterans from the newcomers, which is great. They all gel, and we end up laughing and getting carried away,” she said. Steward is also co-producing the play along with Susan Sirvio; Sirvio is also serving as stage manager for the production. Steward says there will be door prizes up for grabs at both performances on the opening weekend. Performances will take place at 8 p.m. Sept. 23, 24, 29 and 30, and Oct.1, 6, 7 and 8. Matinée 2 p.m. shows are set for Sept. 25 and Oct. 2. Cost is $15 per person, $12 for children 12 and under, and $12 for seniors 65 and older on Sundays. Tickets are available at Gray’s Drug Store at 18 Dundas St. W. in Napanee, or by calling 613354-3346. Steward says the play is appropriate for all ages. Britt Benn honoured with hometown celebration BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

RITT Benn was greeted with a hero’s welcome on Wednesday as hundreds of fans gathered at NDSS to meet the local rugby sevens star. The visit marked a return to where it all started for the Olympic bronze medalist, as she delivered a speech just a couple of yards away from the pitch where she first took up rugby as a Grade 9 student. Benn was presented with a Greater Napanee windbreaker jacket by Mayor Gord Schemerhorn, a certificate of congratulations from the Canadian government by Liberal MP Mike Bossio and a cartoon likeness of herself from Napanee Beaver cartoonist Tim Nimigan. She was also met by a large, supportive crowd that held signs and banners to celebrate the local Olympian.

her career, Benn made sure to thank her hometown for its support throughout her hard fought journey to Rio. She spent more than an hour signing autographs and posing for pictures with those that came to the event. “This is special beyond words,” said Benn. Though grateful for all the support throughout the years, she mentioned in particular the photo she received in Rio of a large crowd gathered in front of the SPC to wish her luck at the games. “I looked at that picture and I was homesick right Adam Prudhomme-Staff away,” said Benn. “So many Britt Benn receives a framed copy of a cartoon families and friends gathdepiction of her drawn by Napanee Beaver car- ered to wish me luck in Rio. and to play for Canada,” added Benn. “Back then, you had to set your mark for playing at the Pan Am Games because that’s as big as rugby got. (Which she did in 2015, helping Canada to gold in Toronto). Rugby was my go-to place, it’s where I excelled, and you could hit people. It’s where I felt at home.” Now 27, Benn looked out to the rugby field where she first got her start at the age of 14. “It’s been a long journey to say the least,” said Benn. “But not by myself. I look out here and I see so many people who supported me throughout this journey. That’s what makes a successful person, the people that stand behind you. I want to take this time to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I made it to the end of the rainbow, I’m an Olympian bronze medalist in a sport that had never been debuted in the

Olympics. We made history. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough.” Though she is yet to commit to the 2020 games in Tokyo, she did offer a glimpse into her plans for the coming year. She announced that she has agreed to a one-year contract with Rugby Canada as well as has applied for a firefighting program in B.C., which is where Rugby Canada is based. Fittingly she arrived to Wednesday’s welcome home event not by limo but rather a Greater Napanee fire truck. “I want every young person out there to listen to me very carefully,” Benn said in closing. “All dreams are possible. Never give up, especially when the going gets tough. There will be people who will tell you you haven’t got what it takes. I say dig deeper. I didn’t get here without my fair share of ups and downs.”

The right look for Thanksgiving S October is only a few weeks away, it begins the busiest entertaining season of the year. Thanksgiving starts off the holiday season, and I’ve already starting thinking about how to decorate the Thanksgiving table. It’s tradition for the whole family to come to our house for dinner, so I become a bit obsessed with having everything look perfect — but that may just be the designer in me! While the holidays are popular for decorating your home, what about decorating your tabletop? As your family and friends gather around your table in gratitude and celebration, delight them with a table that is carefully and thoughtfully dressed. Gourds and small pumpkins are cute and thematic, really inexpensive, and they don’t take up a lot of space. Consider using them as whimsical and colourful favours to put at each plate setting. Using stencils or free hand, paint each guest’s name on his or her pumpkin in a pretty script, or pin a little place setting card to the top or front of each one. As a bonus, guests can then take this Thanksgiving table decoration home — a great way to remember the day! You can use autumn leaves as table decorations for Thanksgiving in several great ways. One is as a Thanksgiving place setting card. To make a natural

wheat readily in the craft department of any good sized department store. Mingle the wheat with a bundle of fresh flowers for a fall look, use it to surround a centerpiece, or add it as a garnish. Even tie a little bundle of cut-off wheat with a ribbon, add a nametag, and use it as a place setting card for Thanksgiving. Now with making your adult table decorative, don’t forget about the children. Minimal prep work will ensure small guests stay happily entertained while the adults enjoy conversation and a peaceful meal nearby. Thanksgiving-themed crafts can make a kids’ table colourful and playful. Cover the table in brown craft paper to provide a place for creative minds and idle hands to colour-doodle or play games. Simply roll out craft paper and securely tape it under the table’s edges. Bonus: This durable surface protects your tabletop and makes cleaning up spills and crumbs a snap. Centerpieces for a kids table shouldn’t be fussy; they’ll need to withstand possible spills and roughhousing so opt for heavy vessels like ironstone pitchers and small mixing bowls. Fill them with mums, pumpkins, acorn squash or gourds and embellish further with raffia, ribbons and feathers. Craft projects are a great way to entertain and encourage creativity, but the

dining table shouldn’t be cluttered with paints and glue sticks. Instead, stock the table with an assortment of colourful beads, leather cording and feathers so the kids can create a necklace or bracelet. Fill jelly jars or juice glasses with crayons so kids can colour the brown paper tablecloth as well as fun Thanksgiving paper crafts and printables. Children can also be encouraged to write a list of things they are thankful for. Making a special kids’ table is all about the little things. Pay attention to the scale, practicality and playfulness of the centerpiece and each place setting. Your pint-sized guests should feel relaxed to be themselves

and have a great time. Have fun decorating your tabletop, and use your own personal touches to make your table and Thanksgiving truly unique and special. Express your gratitude for all the good that life has showered upon you through your decorations. Use natural elements rather than manufactured ones. Help save Mother Nature as you thank her. Council waives fee for Habitat build

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Greater Napanee council decided to cut Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Habitat for Humanity a bit of a break ahead of this morning’s groundbreaking ceremony for the charity’s build at 231 King St. Council voted to reimburse a $4,000 development fee on the build, which is taking place on land council had donated earlier this year. With that, council met local Habitat for Humanity CEO Susan Zambonin halfway with her original deputation, which was to have council waive all development and building permit fees for the project, which total about $10,000. “If you make a donation or a grant in lieu of fees, or however you want to word it, your donation would go to Habitat, said Zambonin. “The family is still going to pay the value of the house whether you waive the fees or not. We’re going to help more families because our cost is lower, is how it works. Councillor Mike Schenk objected to

waiving all fees, citing that council had already donated them the land to build the house and it wouldn’t be fair to other taxpayers who have to pay those fees. “I really do feel that most taxpayers in the municipality would not begrudge those fees to the family that will receive that property, said councillor Roger Cole, who made the motion to reimburse the development fee. “I think anyone in the municipality that pays taxes, me being one of them, would be proud to be a part of that process. Council debated ways in which to help the charity, either through grants or waiving the fee, before ultimately deciding to reimburse the $4,000. “We are helping out the poor working families here, said councillor Carol Harvey. “It’s not giving Habitat for Humanity money, it’s that they spend to help buy poor working people to a house instead of renting for the rest of their lives with nothing to show for it. Habitat for Humanity will break ground on their first build in Napanee this morning at 11:30 a.m. and aims to have a move in ready house by mid-November.

NDSS student in running for writing award BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

A Grade 11 NDSS student is hoping her poem has the ‘write’ stuff to win the Kingston WritersFest ‘TeensWrite’ contest at the end of the month. Hannah Wannamaker was one of four local students whose submissions were selected for the finals of the youth writing contest. Her poem, ‘Jump’, tells the story of a teen who’s been kicked out of his family’s home after revealing to his parents that he’s gay. The contest was open to any Grade 9-12 students in the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board or the Limestone District School Board. It called for original poems, story stories or pieces of creative non-fiction using these five words in any grammatical form: partial, flutter, brilliant, contact and inquisitive. Wannamaker says it’s a fictionalized take on some of the broader issues that were swirling when she wrote it in the spring. “It started out as

Hannah Wannamaker is one of four student writers up for the ‘TeensWrite’ top prize of the Kingston WritersFest later this month. a story and then it turned into a poem, I just kind of ran with it,” she said. “There had been so much stuff going on around (these issues) when I was writing that I thought, maybe I’ll write something a little more controversial down and see where it takes me. Everyone’s going to love it or they’re going to hate it.” Wannamaker entered the same contest last year, but didn’t make it to the top four. She had also done well in Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day writing contests while she was in elementary school. After she submitted the piece, she “didn’t think much of it” again until an announcement at school revealed that it would be sent on from the school level.

Not long after that, she learned the poem had been selected for the finals. “It took me by surprise,” she said. Wannamaker says that while she enjoys writing, she’s not sure just yet if a career in writing is in the cards. “It’s something I’d like to pursue, but I haven’t decided if it’s what I will pursue yet. It’s always going to be a hobby,” she said. Award-winning author Lisa Moore will judge the four final entries. Even if she doesn’t take the top prize, Wannamaker has already earned free entry to the WritersFest workshop of her choice. The winning piece will be selected at the ‘international marquee’ event on Sept. 29.

The scoop about ‘Kilroy was here’ OLOMON wrote: ‘A merry heart makes like a medicine’. A modern Bible translation puts that in the vernacular of our day: ‘A twinkle in the eye delights the heart.’ That is the spirit of it. It does not speak about ‘LOL’, used so freely in modern day communication. It is not referring to jumping up and down with delight over winning the lottery. Rather it portrays a boost to the spirit resulting in a satisfied mind. Astronaut Wally Schirra once said that “levity is the lubricant of crisis. Jokes, pranks, and good-natured kidding relieve tension.” The mythical ‘Kilroy’ burst on the scene during a time when crisis needed to be salved with levity. The Second World War dragged on for what seemed to be an endless duration. Not only were men and women of the armed services threatened with the inevitable loss of life on the battle field, but a shortage of almost all com-

Snapshots From The Past modities, from sugar to shotgun shells created inconvenience in every avenue of daily life. Levity was just one anecdote to offset this doom and gloom. But it was effective. And spontaneously, out of this pressure cooker of life, came humourous fads, like ‘Kilroy was here!’ It was

etched in paint, pencil, ink, and any other method of making a legible imprint. It was found on fences, poster boards, washroom walls, sidewalks — and at least once on a game-used hockey puck! Much to the chagrin of educators, the quip also appeared on school notebooks, library volumes, and chalkboards in classrooms. Any solid surface on which markings could be scratched, chiseled, drawn, or scrawled, ‘Kilroy’ could find it and leave his signature. The real kick to this lark centred around timing. To be there (wherever) to leave this slogan first was the key. This competition began with the various branches of the armed services. The Navy delighted to beat the Army or the Air Force to any given point — and visa versa — specifically landing on soil to contest the enemy. There actually was a ‘Kilroy’. James J. Kilroy was an American shipyard

inspector in Quincy, Mass. during that war. He used this phrase to mark the rivets he had checked on ships being built. The workers, whose rivets Kilroy was counting were paid according the number they put in. Chalk marks were left to show where they finished when their shift ended. Dishonest workers would erase the marks and move them back to gain credit for more rivets, courtesy the previous labourers efforts. Kilroy put a stop to it by signing ‘Kilroy was here’ at the sight of every chalk mark. It became like a ‘Big Brother is watching’ scenario. Thousands of servicemen would have seen these before the ships were painted. This sparked the aforementioned practice in newly captured areas or landings. Mysteriously ‘Kilroy’ had

Starting the evening off is our very own ‘Heartland Country Band’. Then back by popular demand, singer and entertainer Aggie McPhee. Someone new to our area, classic country artist Sam Jarvis, as well as a very popular keyboard/ accordion/ musician Tina Bergman. Three — Stalin, Eisenhower, and Churchill. The Russian chief-of-state was reported to have said after his initial visit: “Who is Kilroy?” In 1946 The Transit Company of America held a competition offering a trolley car to the man who could prove that he was the real “Kilroy”. J.J. brought several of his former co-workers to confirm his identity. Forty imposters were turned away — and he was given that grand prize — which his children used as a playhouse.

NDSS Golden Hawks gear up for KASSAA’s fall season School to field full slate of teams

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

fter their summerlong hiatus, the NDSS Golden Hawks will migrate back their respective fields, courts and courses next week for the start of the KASSAA fall season. Napanee will take part in every sport offered in the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletic Association for the season, which runs from September to midNovember. They’ll be searching for the elusive fall-sport KASSAA championship banner that they went without last season.

A

“We’ve got both football teams (senior and junior), both volleyball teams, field hockey, cross-country, golf and junior girls basketball,” said Todd Collard, NDSS’ athletic director. “We’re just looking for a senior girls basketball coach. If we get a coach, we have players.” Collard is hoping a community volunteer will step forward to coach the senior girls in time for the start of the season, which is tentatively scheduled to get underway next week. Anyone interested in helping out with the basketball team can drop by the school and ask to meet with Collard. “There’s lots of interest from the student body, which is good,” Collard says of the number of students who have tried out for various teams already. “Seems we have a good group of ath-

letes across all teams. Looks to be promising.” On the football field the junior team will look to build off a successful 2015 campaign. They went 3-2-1 in the regular season and battled the La Salle Golden Knights in a tight 35-21 loss in the KASSAA quarterfinals. The seniors, meanwhile, went 2-4, and then bested the Ernestown Eagles in the AA semifinals to reach the AA finals for the first time in the school's history. They were shutout 31-0 in the finals and will look to get back to that game this year and go one step further. The football program was graced with a donation from Nissan over the summer, which will go a long way in helping them with their funding.

Raiders blank Islanders to wrap up perfect pre-season Napanee opens season Sunday at Jets BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

If the pre-season is any indication, the Napanee Raiders are primed for a great 201617 season of Junior C hockey. The Raiders closed out their exhibition schedule on Friday with a convincing 70 win over the visiting Gananoque Islanders. That gave the Raiders a tidy home-and-home sweep over the Islanders, as they also blanked them 3-0 on Sept. 7 in Gananoque. Tyler Ignazzitto opened the scoring for Napanee on Friday, giving the Raiders all the offense they would need just 2:18 into the game. Matthew Scott would score later in the frame. Napanee pulled away in the second as Cullen Hinds, Ignazzitto, Tim Morton and returning veteran Zach Knapp-Hermer all found the back of the net. Justynn Steven added one in the third to close out the scoring.

the pre-season with a 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents by a combined 13-2 mark. Of course the games were merely exhibition with several rookies playing and the Raiders are yet to get a look at Amherstview, Campbellford or the perennial power-house of Port Hope. With the pre-season now finished the Raiders coaching staff will spend the next week making their final decisions as they round out the Opening Night roster. They are still waiting on a few final cuts from the upper tier teams to see what's available before they cement their roster. One thing is clear, they will have several new faces on board for the upcoming season. The Raiders will look to carry their moment into the regular season on Sunday when they travel to Amherstview to take on the Jets at 7:30 p.m. The game will be a rematch of last winter’s semifinal series which the Raiders won in five games. Following that game Adam Prudhomme-Staff Surrounded by Islanders, Napanee’s Justynn Steven battles for a loose puck during Friday’s exhibition Napanee heads to Picton on Thursday night and then game at the Strathcona Paper Centre. will play their first home Veteran goalie Matt he turned away all 19 Napanee outshot the the Raiders in their 3-0 vic- game of the season on SunLoveys made a convincing Islander shots for the Islanders 42-19. tory. Oh, I hope you’re dancing in the sky And I hope you’re singing in the angel’s choir And I hope the angels know what they have, I’ll bet it’s so nice up in Heaven since you arrived. So tell me, what do you do up in Heaven? Are your days filled with love and light? Do you play crib with Mr. Ken? It’s hunting season soon, are you going with Papa Jim? Do you still sit and watch the birds? Are you having Sunday dinners with Memére and Peperé? Tell me, are you happy, are you more alive? Cause here on earth it feels like everything good is missing since you left And here on earth everything is different, there’s an emptiness. I hope your dancing Mom and Dad. Missing you so much. Love always, Lisa XO

We’ve been just keeping up and now we’re in a good spot for football.” In field hockey the Hawks went 5-3-1 last season, which was good for fourth in the standings.
