EDF EN got a chance to ask Greater Napanee council to rethink its recent decision not to endorse that company’s proposed Napanee Solar Energy Centre — but the request didn’t get far. At a sometimes heated special meeting on Thursday afternoon, council declined to reopen its decision made Tuesday night to not endorse the project. None of those councillors who initially voted against endorsing the EDF EN proposal agreed to reconsider their position. However, council did unanimously support a largescale solar project proposed by Ontario Power Generation for a 40-megawatt installation near its Lennox Generating Station. Council had initially voted to approve the installation at its meeting on Tuesday night; however, after OPG rejected a proposed increase of the per-megawatt rate payment to the municipality in the community development agreement which council had asked for, council had to reconsider the motion in order to take into account that lower dollar figure. Council voted to reconsider the motion, and voted to endorse the project with the lower contribution amount. Council had sought $2,700 per megawatt, per year; OPG advised the municipality that it would not budge from its original proposal of $2,000 per MW, per year. Council voted to say ‘yes’ to the modified OPG proposal only a few moments before rejecting a plea from EDF EN to reconsider its decision not to endorse that company’s proposed 60MW solar project planned for off County Road 9 south of Napanee. Kevin Campbell, Senior Developer for EDF EN Canada, made his pitch to council to reconsider.

speeding or driving while distracted in a school zone. “We’re starting a week earlier than we have in the past with our back to school initiative,” said Napanee OPP Staff Sgt. Scott Semple. “This year it’s Operation Slow Town. The whole idea is we’re going to be out heavily the week before school slowing (drivers) down coming into any built up areas. Not just schools, but just getting people slowing down and letting people know there’s going to be more pedestrians and to slow cars down coming into all the arteries coming into town.” That means drivers coming out of 80 kilometreper-hour zones into 60 kph zones should take caution because there’s a good chance there will be an officer with a radar gun not too far up the road. Semple also warned drivers that fines for several driving offences increased as of Sept. 1. Among the changes are that distracted driving now carries a fine of $490 and three demerit points, as well as a $490 fine for not slowing down and moving over for tow trucks that are stopped at the side of the road. When passing a cyclist, drivers must now leave a one-metre distance between them and the cyclist or face a $110 fine and two demerit points.

the Napanee OPP will increase their presence in the town’s school zones. Semple says drivers need to exercise extra caution because young students in particular may be more excited about seeing their friends back at school and forget to observe proper road safety. There will also be several students who are walking a new route to school and may not be aware of the dangers of crossing at certain intersections. To help get the word out, members of Tri-Board Stu-

dent Transportation Services have parked several of their buses in prominent areas throughout their coverage area that displays a sign reminding motorists that school starts next week. “It’s really just to get people aware that those big yellow buses are back on the road next week,” said Nicole Aubertin, safety officer with Tri-Board. “We want them to be on the look out for children and aware that the buses are going to stop. When the lights go on and the arm goes out, they need to stop.”

Corrections officer charged Beaver Staff

A local woman is facing a breach of trust charge following an OPP investigation at Quinte Detection Centre. According to the Napanee OPP, detectives from the detachment’s crime unit began their investigation in March 2015 after information was received from the correctional services oversight and investigations unit of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. That information suggested that a corrections office may have provided contraband to inmates. At the conclusion of their investigation, police charged a 45-year-old Tyendinaga Township resident with one count of breach of trust by a public officer. She was released on a promise to appear and an officerin-charge undertaking to appear in court in Napanee on Sept. 21.

Rotary Club gets behind relief for Rankin Inlet

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Local Rotarians have been reaching out to those in the north facing hardships and food shortages, and are now looking for community support to keep the programs going. The Rotary Club of Napanee formed a sub-committee aiming to assist people in the northern community of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The 2,500-population community is made up mostly of flat rock and valleys. Summer temperatures can go up to 20 C and winter temperatures can drop down to -50C. Because of the remote location of the hamlet, it is expensive to ship food there, which is why the Rotary Club of Napanee has decided to help. Michael Mulroney is a

social worker operating in Rankin Inlet who is from the Napanee area. About a year ago, while visiting family in Greater Napanee, he met with the Rotary Club of Napanee to tell them about the living circumstances in Rankin Inlet. “He touched us at all emotions. There was a need there and we’re looking for things to do as a club to help those in need,” said Chris Seeley, Rotary president and a member of the Rankin Inlet sub-committee. “We were accustomed to doing things to help thirdworld needs but for us to hear from him that there were Canadian citizens suffering as much as people, if not more, in the third world — that was an eye opener for us information-wise and pulled at our heart-strings,” added Mary Anne Evans, a Rotarian and secretary of the sub-committee for

Rankin Inlet. The committee was put in touch with a local food bank in Rankin Inlet, called the Rankin Inlet Deacon’s Cupboard. From there, the committee decided to send money to a local grocery store so food can be purchased as needed for the food bank and charged to the Rotary Club of Napanee account. Mulroney stressed a need for food above everything else in the community. The Rotary Club of Napanee has been supporting the Rankin Inlet food bank for about a year now and has been looking to expand its support. One way the club has done that is by supporting students with school supplies. About 40 backpacks filled with school supplies were provided to the community. Evans said Mulroney helped to deliver them to families in need.

School started Aug. 17 in Rankin Inlet. “He actually hand delivered some of those backpacks to the needy. For example, one little guy his mother is dying, she’s in palliative care, so Michael (Mulroney) took the backpack to the mother in hospital so that when her little guy comes to visit she has a present for him,” Evans explained. “Then another one, he went to their home and presented two backpacks to two young boys. He commented that the elder grandmother gave him a hug. It sounded like it wasn’t an everyday occurrence it showed the level of her emotion,” Evans said, explaining other examples how people from Greater Napanee have made a difference in the

lives of those living in Rankin Inlet. In the future, the Rotary Club of Napanee plans to purchase items made by those in Rankin Inlet to sell in Greater Napanee. In turn, any profits from the items will go back to the community through the backpack or food bank programs. “Michael had different things made by residents of Rankin Inlet when he was here,” Seeley explained. “We’re looking at buying things from different artisans in that area and we could market here.” The items would be bought out from the artist and used at Rotary Club silent auctions and fundraisers. Items will include artwork such as sculptures, sewn items, and

handmade clothing and shoes. The Rankin Inlet support committee is made up of eight Rotarians: Cynthia Surette as chair, Evans as secretary, Seeley, John Mayhew, Max Christie, Tim Craig, John Quackenbush and Dana Henry. The committee is seeking local support in order to be able to continue supporting Rankin Inlet. The cost of a backpack and school supplies was about $35 each; those interested in sponsoring a backpack can contact the Rotary Club of Napanee. Monetary donations are also being accepted for the Rankin Inlet food bank. More information on the food bank program can be found on the Facebook page: Friends of Rankin Inlet & Deacon’s Cupboard.

Contractions and campaigns In case you haven’t heard, we’re in a recession. Or we were in a recession. Or maybe not. It kind of depends on who you talk to, really — especially when that someone happens to be looking for your vote. Well, Canada did see two straight quarters of negative gross domestic product growth — which Statistics Canada revealed on Tuesday — and that is the technical definition of a recession. But as recessions go, it couldn’t hold a candle to the one we went through in 2008. However, we don’t see the question of whether or not we went through, or are going through a recession as particularly important. As with many things, it’s the trend we’re watching. That means looking at this recession with a little context. Since 2008, Canada had recovered economically, but we certainly weren’t ever ‘firing on all cylinders’. Growth since that first recession of the new millennium has been modest, and most of it was tied to the booming resource sector. Ontario’s manufacturing sector certainly hasn’t come close to returning to those pre-recession days. Seen through the prism of the federal election, we see two conflicting narratives. On the one side, Canada has had a steady hand at the tiller through rough economic seas, and it would have been — and will be — much worse if the ‘other guys’ got a chance to run the show; ‘we’ll turn into Greece!’ On the other side, Canada has now suffered through two (egad!) recessions, and we’ll be in for more for the same if we stick with ‘those guys’ in power. That’s to be expected in the midst of an election campaign — your party has all the answers, and the other parties will surely lead the country to ruin. But the rhetoric doesn’t square with reality (and that’s not particularly unexpected either). The fact is, governments — through no fault of their own — simply don’t have the tools in the toolbox to either singlehandedly steer a county into economic boom times, nor do they have the capacity to singlehandedly screw up so badly that they can steer the country into another great depression. The last recession was caused by a worldwide collapse in credit systems. Every developed country took a tumble, including Canada. This most recent recession was brought on by a worldwide collapse in oil prices. The fact that a resource-based economy like Canada was sent into recession should not come as a surprise. Are there things governments can do to make ‘favourable conditions’ for growth. Sure there are — and the debate over those measures, whether they be tax cuts or infrastructure spending programs or trade deals or whatever — is important. Voters should examine the parties’ platforms carefully. But voters shouldn’t forget that global events can undermine — or, conversely, enhance —any best laid plans.

Getting to know new neonics regulations With regulations now in place limiting the use of neonics on corn and soybean crops in Ontario, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture has continued to hold fast on an important task. We are committed to working closely with government and industry to achieve a comprehensive pollinator strategy that includes all considerations for improving pollinator health. This past Tuesday, a Pollinator Health Action Plan Forum was organized by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The OFA was there to assist in constructing a comprehensive pollinator health strategy to encompass managed bees and wild pollinators in all of Ontario. Other ministries included in the participants were the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Roughly 30 groups in total made up of other farm organizations, academic institutions, and NGOs began facilitated discussions about the actions needed to improve pollinator health in Ontario. Following a presentation from Dr. Nigel Raine, Pollinator Conservation Chair at the University of Guelph on cur-

rent pollinator research and health issues, Kelly McAslan from OMAFRA gave a description of the broad elements in Ontario’s Pollinator Health Strategy. The three areas of the strategy include

development of the Pollinator Health Action Plan. This action plan will encompass habitat and nutrition, diseases, pests and genetics, climate change and weather, and pesticide exposure. The forum allowed the participants to comment directly on the first three of the four areas just mentioned to begin the consultation on these areas. The forum also served as an opportunity to learn about current government programs in place, and to network with possible partners to strengthen the outcome of the future plan. The need for clear communication on the issues was evident. Minister Leal brought remarks to close the forum and was clear on his mandate to deliver on a comprehensive strategy. The OFA will continue to advocate for and represent the interests of our members who represent a broad swath of Ontario agriculture. From the beginning of the pollinator health discussions, the OFA has been at the table and pushed for a comprehensive strategy that considers the full list of nine key stressors that have been identified as playing a role in pollinator health – bee genetics, habitat loss, nutrition, disease and predators, climate change and impact of weather, and exposure to pesticides used in hive management and in crop production. Staff picks: Finding Audrey Erin Markuschewsky of the Napanee Branch of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries recently finished reading Sophie Kinsella’s first foray into the world of Young Adult literature. “Finding Audrey is the first YA book by the popular author of the Shopaholic series“ Coles explains Erin. “It is set in present day U.K. and told from the perspective of Audrey, a fourteen year old girl with an interesting story to tell. This was my first time reading anything by Kinsella and I was definitely not disappointed. The story is bright, funny and charming but also deals with the serious topic of mental illness. It is a relatable story for anyone who has dealt with this or any type of stress in their daily

lives.” “Audrey is a young girl who has been removed from her school because she was the victim of a serious bullying incident by a group of girls. The incident leaves Audrey feeling afraid to leave her house and face the world outside her dark sunglasses. She finds comfort in Notes her dark bedroom and around her family only. She has not gone anywhere except her therapist’s office since the day of the incident.” “The story also follows the comedic family dynamic of Audrey, her parents and her two brothers Felix and Frank. These characters allow us to see the humorous side of typical everyday problems all families with children in the 21st century have to deal with. This

n Contract talks between the Strathcona Paper Company and its unionized employees appeared to be stalled, with both sides calling for the involvement of a conciliator. The company’s latest offer on a new contract had been rejected by the union. It had included a three-year contract and pay rate increase of six cents per hour per year, improved vacation arrangements, a shift differential and one more statutory holiday annually. The union, meanwhile, was looking for increases averaging 33 cents per hour over a two-year period, amounting to a general wage increase of 15 per cent. Union reps indicated their proposal would bring wages at the Strathcona plant in line with other plants. n With an election call by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, the machinery behind the election swung into action. It would be the last federal election with the current riding boundaries. The riding boundaries would be redrawn after this general election. The parties had yet to hold nomination meetings, so no candidates had been officially selected. The returning officer for Prince Edward-Lennox was in the process of appointing enumerators.

Radio soap opera star Virginia Payne we’ve knowed one another, I ain’t ever heard nuthin’ like this!” In moments of excitement, “Land sakes!”, or “Land ‘O Goshen!” escaped her lips. She bore three children. Evey, the elder girl, was a superficial snob, whose main goal was to become the head of the ‘crème de la crème’ group of the community — the “Jolly 17”. She was married to Willy Fitz, who was constantly concocting “getrich-quick” schemes—none of which ever worked. Fay, the youngest sibling, was prim and proper, and a romantic, who, when she finally found the man of her dreams, became a widow after less than a year in double harness. John, her son, was killed on a Second World

War battlefield, “buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Germany.” Of the 7,065 episodes, perhaps the two most celebrated story lines featured the congenial widow hiding an anti-communist couple, the Ivanoffs, who were being pursued by Soviet agents — one of whom shot the wife. The other involved cousin Sylvester swindling Evey and Willy out of their life savings under the pretense of investing it. Typical of those plodding daytime serials, listeners were left hanging at crucial moments in the plot. Most exasperating were the Friday cliffhangers like: “Fay finds words on her tongue which surprise even Fay — on Monday!

n The Napanee Block Parents organization was at a crossroads. With only three of the current 10-member executive committing to return to the board for the upcoming term, it was not clear that the group would be able to function effectively. Homes displaying a Block Parent sign would act as a refuge for children who were lost, were being bullied or were under threat of violence. In the past year, 14 children made use of the Block Parent program. About 100 households in town displayed a Block Parent sign. n The Lennox and Addington Board of Education and its secondary school teachers were no closer to a contract resolution. A recent government-appointed commission report that upheld the right for teachers to strike, however, wasn’t expected to have much of an impact on those negotiations. The school board hadn’t seen a strike by any of its teachers since the county school board system was adopted 11 years earlier. Further negotiations were planned later on in the month.

Talented musical duo part of new concert series BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Two young, local talents will be performing for the first time together in a new concert series held at Ellena’s Café. Gloria Digby, known for her passion of country music and her original songs, and Ryland Clark, known as a pop performer who recently competed in YTV’s The Next Star, will be coming together to perform a one-of-a-kind show at Ellena’s. “This is the very first house concert series at

Ellena’s, she’s going to be hosting our house concert series and we definitely plant on doing at least four a year there, maybe more,” said Cliff Trott, organizing the series. Trott watched Digby and Clark perform at the 4 Legged Friends Festival in July and asked them to launch the house concert series next month. Though Digby and Clark both attended Napanee District Secondary School, they haven’t performed together before. Both said they’re looking forward to the show and the opportunity to try out on

another’s styles. “Getting to do something new with him is really exciting,” said Digby, who plans to perform more popbased music for the show. “At the end we’re going to come together for a few songs,” Digby added. “We’ve found out that our voices fit together really well and our styles are blending. Ryland is doing a newer country song with me and then I’m doing a Shawn Mandes song with him. Clark said country music is new to him but he’s enjoyed exploring new a new style of music for the show. Aside from pop, Clark

be performing around the world. I am going to keep working toward it,” said Clark. Digby has graduated from high school and has taken a year off school to focus on music. “I’m trying to get a full album together. I’m co-writing with a lot of people, which is awesome. I’ve always written songs by myself but getting to work with other people and bounce ideas off them has been really cool,” said Digby, hoping to release the album in about a year. “Right now I’m working with a producer in a studio

also sings a lot of jazz; however, after his Next Star competition last year he has decided to focus on pop music. “It kind of locked it in for me, I guess. I always liked singing jazz but I liked the energy singing pop music. I relate to pop music more,” said Clark, who hopes to pursue music full time after high school. This year he will be entering Grade 11 at NDSS and will be taking part in the Let’s Make a Demo program. “Music is what I want to do for a living, that’s definitely what my goal is — to

in Kingston. We’re working on more finding myself because I’ve always just sang country music and I love country music but it’s good to get a change and get to do more of the pop and alternative stuff,” Digby added. “I’m still keeping with my country and alternative, but trying to expand what I do… I’m getting into the alternative side of things because that’s where my original music sits.” Digby and Clark will be performing at Ellena’s next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and available at Ellena’s and online at: www.starstop.ca.

Gardening guru makes tree donation BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Mark Cullen, horticulturalist and one of Canada’s bestknown gardening experts, has donated 27 trees to the Town of Greater Napanee. Cullen has a partnership with Home Hardware stores across Canada and has offered these trees to the municipality in part due to the great working relationship Napanee’s Home Hardware has with Cullen. Cullen also greatly support’s Greater Napanee’s Communities in Bloom endeavors. At cost, the trees are worth about $200 each but Marsha Beebe, owner of Napanee Home Hardware, estimated the trees would sell for about $500 each. The trees have all been donated to the town and municipal staff is now determining where each of the trees will be planted. The trees are all native hardwoods, both red maple and sugar maple trees. A truck was donated by Shelin Pools Ltd. to pick up and transport the trees. Shelin employee Mike Ball and town staff Brian Marrison left at 6:30 a.m. last Wednesday to pickup and deliver the trees.

of some heated arguments and hurt feelings if tastes and home décor styles clash. With these helpful tips and some careful planning, you can make the job easy and even fun to do. If you are moving into a new home together, take ample photos and measurements. Even if it means making an extra appointment to go back, do it. Having the images and measurements to refer to while you’re planning will be invaluable and save plenty

of headaches on moving day. Merging two households might seem like a relatively straightforward task. The process can actually get pretty intense Adapting your lifestyle to fit with someone else’s is a learning process that requires lots of compromise. Before you start the merge, have a conversation with the person you’re moving in with to go over all the big decisions and prevent things from getting too emotional or

tense. Be respectful of each other and acknowledge right from the beginning that sharing space can be an emotional process. Talk about the possessions you both cherish. Is there something you assume your partner will give up? Is there something you really don’t want to give up? Get it all out there right away. Pick and choose favourites from each person’s belongings first, setting aside the things you both love and need. It feels good to start off on an agreeable note. A good rule to follow is ‘purge before you merge.’ Whether you’re moving to a brand new home or someone else is moving into yours, you’re probably going to need all the space you can get. If you have less stuff to move in the first place, you’ll have fewer items to deal with later. Figure out what you need and what you don’t and make a plan to get rid of the possessions you don’t need right away. Take a look at your items and think about how often you use them. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you haven’t used in a year. Get rid of duplicates. Size up every last item and choose the best example: the sharpest, highest quality knives, the best blender, etc. It can be tempting to keep multiples just because they are high quality, but bear in mind the amount of cupboard and closet space in your new home before burdening yourself with excess stuff. A lot of emotion can be attached to pieces that have been handed down in a family, not to mention they tend to be high quality and worth keeping. If a piece of furniture is not your style or feels a bit fusty and outdated, try mixing it up with fresh cushions or drawer pulls. Take time before the move to plan room schemes or draw a floor plan. Walk through each room in the new place and discuss

where you will put that. Or draw a floor plan. It may seem like a bit of a hassle, but will make your life a lot easier when you start moving into the new place or when someone is moving into yours. A floor plan is a drawing or illustration of the floor space of each room in your house, as viewed from above. Your drawing doesn’t have to be a work of

Design Time art. Just create a to-scale sketch out each room. Include doors, windows, radiators, cabinets or any other features that might affect how you arrange furniture in the room. Measure the rooms in your new home, and write the measurements of the different rooms along the edges of the sketched walls. This way you can figure out what will fit where. Edit your closets beforehand. Be honest with each other about how much square footage you are used to having for clothes and accessories. If there are too many clothes to fit everything in the bedroom closet at once, try sorting your clothes and accessories based on seasons and store out-of-season stuff in an accessible spot. Find a decorating scheme that merges your tastes. Whether you’re moving together into a brand new space or into one of

your existing homes, decide on a new decorating scheme that will tie all of your possessions together into a cohesive home. You might want to paint the walls, install new light fixtures, get new curtains, and such to make the space feel like it belongs to the whole family, and not just one person. Another idea is to mix it up with an art wall that is a joint effort. Break the ice in the new place by combining your posters, prints and other artwork in a collaborative gallery wall that mixes and matches both your tastes. Make sure you each have a corner or whole room to call your own. A desk, a ‘man-cave,’ a hobby room, something, someplace in your new home that you can express yourself will be rewarding. As much as you have a life together, try to indulge in a separate interest. Respect each other’s preferences and be openminded about the end result. Realize that merging two households means making compromises. Your lifestyles are about to change, but that doesn’t have to be a negative thing. In fact, it’s very exciting. The new household isn’t going to be like your old one, and you shouldn’t expect it or want it to be either. You’re merging your tastes with your partners to create something new and fresh. With careful planning you can create a new space that you both enjoy. Wishing my friend Jennifer Smith all the happiness as she marries Adam Rayner! Congratulations to you both as you celebrate your new lives together! Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder day is Sept. 9 and a local group is planning to raise funds and awareness throughout September. The Centennial Napanee Woman’s Christian Temperance Union will be meeting for lunch at Spud’s restaurant on Sept. 9 at noon and ask that anyone interested in supporting the

cause join them for lunch. That morning, at 9:09 a.m., church bells will ring to bring awareness to children born with FASD. On Sept. 19, another event will be held in order to raise funds and awareness. A spaghetti luncheon will be held at the Salvation Army Hall, as well as a silent auction and market. The fundraiser will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We’re having a fundraiser and we’re trying

to build up the cause to be able to assist other programs, said Ruth Chiles, one of the organizers for this year’s event. Some of the programs the WCTU supports is making blankets and quilts to give to new moms in hospitals and at rehabilitation centres. “We just finished our last term of making baby blankets, we crochet, knit and sew them. We gave them to the Belleville Pregnancy Centre. We also col-

lected money for the Kingston Pregnancy Centre, said Chiles. The program also supports the Morning Star Mission, Interval House, and the Salvation Army. “It’s the drinking, the drugs, the smoking; that’s our main goal is to cleanup those things, Chiles explained. For more information or to contribute to the Sept. 9 event, contact Chiles at 613409-2810.

SOLAR FROM PAGE 1 “We’re available to talk to you about any amendments you wish to make to our community benefit agreement in order to earn your support,” he said. Campbell told council that 70 per cent of abutting landowners indicated their support for the project, and that according to a company poll of 574 Greater Napanee residents, 62 per cent are supportive “of a project that brings benefits to the community and is hidden from neighbouring homes and roads.” Later, he said, “some councillors decided to not support our project because it lacked community support. My question to council is, how does this council define community support?” Campbell indicated that natural features would be used to screen the solar panels, and where that was insufficient, natural barriers such as evergreen trees would be planted. As for farmland, Campbell said, “Our landowners have gone out of their way to ask us not to build on the more productive portions of their land. They asked us to build on the marginal portions of the land that happen to be farther away from local roads and homes.” Meanwhile, he said the company would enter into an agreement with the municipality to pay for any repairs needed to local roads. After Campbell’s presentation, however, none of the council members who initially voted against endorsing the project were willing to reconsider their position, and Tuesday night’s vote to reject EDF EN’s request for endorsement stood. A few councillors expressed disappointment in council’s decision on EDF EN, bemoaning the fact that in taking a pass on the proposed project, it could be forgoing more than $2 million in potential additional revenue over the 20-year lifespan of the project if the Independent Electricity System Operator ultimately approves the project, without council’s endorsement. “As much as you said at the last meeting that we would have some control over (these projects) locally, this may come back and bite us, because as much as we as a majority feel that it’s not something we want, the EDF proposal may happen anyways. Should that happen, we’re going to be out of a community development agreement,” said Ward 5 councillor Shaune Lucas. Other councillors, however, stood by their decision. “We had to weigh both of these. I think we’ve given reasons enough… (such as) location, the way that the company dealt with the residents,” said Deputy-Mayor Marg Isbester. “It’s too bad that people who were so much in favour of it hadn’t come out to council when the people weren’t in favour of it were very verbal about it. All I heard, until today, was mostly bad.” Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn, meanwhile, angrily chastised some councillors for apparently secondguessing council’s position. “I sit here and listen to the, really, bull____, excuse my language, but (with what) some of you said today, you might better have kept quiet,” he said before calling for the meeting to be adjourned.

Huge medal haul for Clapp eagles 18 to claim GWC Players rave Express clubs out east about Bath’s Gold for bantams, novice pick-ups; silver for peewees

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

apanee Express teams had an extremely successful trip to the Maritimes this weekend as the AFW Construction Bantams captured gold and the D&D Electrocraft Peewees earned silver at their respective Eastern Canadians. The bantams capped their gold medal run in Nova Scotia by downing a familiar foe in the Lyn Lightning by a score of 6-1. Napanee had gone backand-forth with their Ontario rivals all season long, scoring the decisive victory with the gold medal on the line. “Our boys were pretty confident going into the game having seen them so much,” Express head coach Bryan Brooks said of facing Lyn. “That was the matchup we wanted so to speak.” Riley Manion pitched the complete game victory, his fourth of the playoffs. For his efforts he was named the tournament’s top pitcher, going 4-1 overall. Jason McCracken and Brendan Hagerman were also named top batters at the tournament. Napanee opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Newfoundland, a team that had finished fourth at Nationals earlier in August. They followed that with their only loss of the tournament, a 2-1 loss to Brookfield, N.S. Brooks said the team came together after that loss, storming back in their next game to defeat New Brunswick 15-0. Jacob Ethier pitched a no-hitter. The Express continued to roll in the playoffs, beating two Newfoundland entries and Brookfield to advance to the gold medal game. “We knew we had to use all 12 players to bring home the gold,” said Brooks. “We had a pretty good start, we had one game where we didn’t hit well and that ended up putting us in a deeper hole than we planned.” Knowing another loss

N

could spell the end of their gold medal run, the Express banded together and hit a collective .500 in the playoffs to outslug their opponents. Brooks said the gold medal was a particularly special one for the group, as they had grown up together playing through the Softball Napanee system. All 10 of the local players have family members that are either currently in the Softball Napanee system or had parents who had graduated from it. The future looks bright for next year’s bantam team as well as the next level as six are eligible to return next year while six will move on to the midget.

“We knew we had to use all 12 of our players to bring home the gold.” Bryan Brooks, Express head coach As for the D&D Electrocraft Peewee Express, they battled their way to a 5-3 overall record en route to the silver medal. Their Eastern Canadians were held in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland. Napanee met the top Ontario ranked team Belmore in the finals, falling 71. To earn their way into that gold medal showdown they outslugged Quebec’s St. Gervais 12-8 in the semifinal. Brock Fencott got the win while Connor Brooks and Alex Li each had a pair of hits. The victory was a measure of revenge for the Express club, as they had fallen 6-3 to the Quebec team in the round robin. Napanee’s bats were on fire to open the tournament, leading them to an 11-1 win over Newfoundland’s top team and a 14-2 victory over the host team. After opening the second day with a loss to Quebec the Express roared back in their second game of the day, downing Nova Scotia’s West Hants 11-8. Fen-

cott got the win while Li picked up another two hits. Napanee closed out the round robin with a 10-0 loss to the Belmore team they’d meet in the finals. That meant Napanee had to win their next game to keep their gold medal hopes alive, which they did. A silver medal was a solid finish to the season for the peewees, who made great strides throughout the summer to become one of the top teams in the province. This marked the first time this group had played in an Eastern Canadians, having earned their spot at eliminations that were held in Napanee back in July. To help get themselves ready for the tough competition they’d face out east, they faced opponents from the bantam level for much of the summer. That tactic seemed to have paid off with a silver medal. Meanwhile in Quebec a pair of Napanee Express Novice Blue ladies, Rachel Foster and Gracie Hearns, also earned an Eastern Canadian gold medal serving as pick up players for the Brantford Bobcats. Sharing catching and centre field duties, the girls helped the Bobcats go undefeated. They teamed up to score the only run in a pivotal match up against Tavistock, as Hearns came into score the only run of the game courtesy an RBI by Foster. Hearns batted leadoff all weekend long with on base percentage of .731 while Foster batted clean up and had an on base percentage of .636. Foster's big bat earned her the MVP of the Eastern Canadians tournament. Both girls are first year Novice players and will be returning to the Napanee Novice Express girls softball team next year. The Express novice team projects to be a very competitive team in 2016 and hopes to qualify for Canadians themselves. Tryouts for the Novice Express start on Sept 9th 2015 from 6:308:30 p.m. at the North Fred Diamond.

or most of the day Sunday, Brad Clapp found himself in a tight battle for the top spot on The Great Waterway Classic leaderboard. But when he pulled away from the pack, he really pulled away. Clapp finished with a birdie on 15 and an impressive eagle on 18, dropping his approach shot five feet from the cup to all but ensure the title win. When the dust settled, Clapp — who played in the final grouping with Californian Tom Moore — had a four-stroke advantage on six others at -19. The former Trenton resident who now lives in Chilliwack, BC, said that as his final round unfolded, he knew that he’d have to post a good round in order to finish the same way he finished his round on Saturday: on top the leaderboard. “These players are so good out here that I knew

CARDS OF THANKS

THANK YOU Heartfelt thanks to my family for the wonderful 65th Birthday Party you planned for me. A special thank you to Erin and Steven for hosting this lovely outdoor event. I loved the presentation of the life stories and memories you wrote in the memory book you gave me. The feast of food you all prepared was delicious and enjoyed by all. Thank you to my wonderful family, relatives, friends and neighbours for cards, well wishes, gifts and flowers and especially for being part of my 65th Birthday Celebration. Sincerely, Maria Hunt. The family of the late Betty Richmond would like to thank Dr. K. Hota, Dr. Morrison and Dr. MacGregor and the staff of the Lennox and Addington County Hospital for their kindness and excellent care during the last two weeks of Betty’s life. Thanks also to the SE CCAC for the care that was provided to Betty over the last several months at home. To those who sent us flowers and cards and attended Betty’s graveside Service, you cannot know what that meant to us. The kindness shown to us from friends and family has helped during a difficult time.

BROUGH, James Robert “Jim

Rest in Peace I can’t believe a year has gone by since you left this earth to become an angel. I can’t believe what a strong man you were right to the end, always saying, “Don’t cry Mom, me not thinking what you were going through. David was the most loving son a mom could ever wish for, a good father to Jesse and Amanda, and the best grandpa to his FAB 4. That’s what he called his grandchildren, Jaydeen, Jesslyn, Rylie, and Ashton. He loved family and always got everyone in the family together for a fish fry whenever he came home for a visit. David lit up a room with his beautiful smile and made sure everyone was looked after and enjoying themselves never thinking of himself. Oh how I miss his phone calls every night. David excelled in whatever he did and I am so proud to call him my son. Always on my mind, forever in my heart. Till we meet again. Love Mom

LOSEE - David Earl, September 5, 2014. Cherished son. I think of you in silence, No eyes can see me weep, But still within my aching heart, Your memory I will keep. Missing you always, Loving you forever. Dad. LOSEE - In loving memory of my brother, David Earl, my Best Friend. I can’t believe it’s been a year, For I still cry a lot of tears. I look back upon all the memories we have shared and treasure each one as if you were here. I miss your laugh and your phone calls too, You’re with the angels now And there’s nothing I can do, I was blessed to have a brother like you, I remember the saying we used to do, You lean on me, I lean on you, “Pound. Forever loved, Sis Cathy. RICHMOND - In loving memory of a beloved husband, father and grandfather, Allan Elburn, who passed away September 2, 1989. The heart is like a treasure chest That is filled with souvenirs, It is where we keep the memories We gathered through the years, We do not lose the ones we love, For they will always stay Within our hearts forever, Each and every day. Sadly missed and always remembered by wife Doreen and children, Dale, Lynda, Allison and their families. We, along with her husband Neil, also remember with great sadness a daughter and sister, Jean Anne, who passed away June 19, 2010. We love and miss you.

Runnin’ the roads in late summer L&A BY ROB PLUMLEY

Special to the Beaver As Labour Day weekend approaches, so too does the unofficial end of summer. It’s been another great season of activity here in Lennox and Addington County. Many of our calendars have included multiple visits to amazing events and fun attractions that are found throughout the county. I always meet this time of year with mixed emotion. On one hand, I’m happy to see the return of routine that comes with ‘back to school’. That, and the fact that my kids’ associated daycare costs disappear. On the other hand, I am sad that the warm weather will all too soon be replaced by the frigid temperatures of an eastern Ontario winter. But before we pull out the scarves, skis and snow shovels, there is still plenty of time to get out and experience some ‘summer-ish’ L&A County activities. Let’s start with some great events that are scheduled to take place in many communities throughout Lennox & Addington over the next little while. The village of Bath is always busy this time of year. On Sept. 12, a variety of local artists, craftspeople and artisans will have their work on display and for sale at the Bath Fall Art Affair. Taking place at the Fairfield-Gutzeit House and Grounds, the day will also feature live music, a book sale, and tours of the historic home. The following day, Sept. 13, the Bath Fall Festival returns to Centennial Park in the village. The public can enter their wares in a number of fun contests including baked goods, preserves, vegetable, and floral competitions. The Amherst Island

International Dry Stone Wall Festival is from Sept. 25-27. The island has one of Canada’s largest concentrations of historic Irish dry stone walls, many over 150 years old. There will be a variety of activities paying tribute to this craft, including dry stone carving demos, site tours, children’s workshops and much more. The ninth annual Denbigh Countryfest is happening from Sept. 18-20. There’s a whole weekend of fun scheduled, including air rifle target shooting, logging displays, horse pulls, and live music. A great outdoor concert to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society is happening soon in Greater Napanee. On Sept. 12, enjoy jazz, pop and blues in a beautiful setting for Music by the River. Entertainment includes Michael Webster and his New York Band featuring Iyono Ede. The event takes place at 737 River Rd. Speaking of great music, if you like hearing worldclass talent be sure to check out an exciting series taking place at the Tamworth Legion. Beginning in October, six concerts featuring well-known Canadian artists will be performing, including Sweet Alibi, Lynn Miles, Jack de Keyzer, Amelia Curran, The Lovelocks and David Francey. In addition to events, there are many local activities that are perfect for this time of year. Whether you’re on your bicycle, in your car or on your motorcycle, we invite you to tour the open roads of Lennox and Addington County. We’ve put together a variety of great routes that stretch north from the shore of Lake Ontario. The routes are particularly beautiful when the leaves begin to change. They take you through each of our picturesque communities and past

Touring the scenic roads in Lennox and Addington County is always a pleasurable activity. many of our tourist attractions, most of which are still open well into October and beyond. It’s getting dark earlier, making this time of year ideal for stargazing. One of the best places to view the night sky the way it was meant to be seen is at the Lennox and Addington County Dark Sky Viewing Area north of Erinsville. Early nightfall and cool, crisp temperatures make the universe come alive right before your eyes. If you haven’t been to the viewing area yet, pick a cloud-free evening (thanks, Captain Obvious) and a moonless or near-moonless night for conditions that draw stargazers and amateur astronomers from urban centres throughout Ontario and beyond. It’s been a lot of fun
