Agency preparing for build on King Street BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Rock-and-roll festival bound for Napanee

Greater Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Habitat for Humanity Chief Executive Officer Susan Zambonin was in Napanee last week looking to spread ‘habititis’ in the community. That’s the name of the fictitious ‘bug’ people get when they get a sudden urge to help out with a Habitat build. She’s hoping the community will catch that bug and rally together for the first ever Habitat for Humanity build in Napanee. They’ll be building on a lot at 231 King Street, which was made available by Greater Napanee council. Habitat plans to build throughout October and into November and have the home ready for a family to move into before Christmas. They are still in the process of selecting the family that would move into the newly constructed home. Habitat for Humanity is calling on Napanee residents to assist with the build by volunteering in any capacity throughout October and November. They don’t need to be skilled experts as they’ve have tradespeople on hand to supervise the build. They are just looking for extra hands to help with basic construction and other tasks that go into a build. They are also seeking sponsors to help cover building materials. TransCanada has already stepped up and teamed with the municipality to help sponsor the build. “Affordable housing is a real issue,” said Zambonin when explaining the types of people they help whether they are being forced out of their current residence due to its condition or rising cost of rent.

HABITAT | Affordable, but not ‘free’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “There’s a difference between affordable rent and affordable home ownership,” Zambonin continued. “The way I explain it to people is the old proverb ‘give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for life’. If a family has an affordable rental then it’s meeting their needs for right now, it’s not helping them for the future. Affordable home ownership means that they’re building home equity in their home. That, to

these people, is like a savings account.” Zambonin explained that they screen all applicants to make sure they are a right fit for the program and will be able to afford a home. The organization also requires anyone selected for the program to contribute ‘sweat equity’ by helping with the build. Perhaps the greatest misconception about Habitat for Humanity is that they hand out a free house, which Zambonin stressed isn’t the case.

It’s coming ...

Thursday, September 8, 2016

“We offer families an opportunity to purchase a house with no interest, no down payment,” explained Zambonin. “The ‘affordability’ part is also that they’re never paying more than 25 per cent of their income towards housing.” The money they collect goes towards their next build which means Habitat for Humanity is funded in large part by those who they assist. Anyone interested in assisting with the upcoming build can visit www.HabitatKingston.com.

L&A SOS revive 55-Plus activities for fall BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

With summer giving way to fall, Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services is gearing up for the next season of 55-Plus Activities. According to 55-Plus coordinator Kim Sledz, there is no shortage of activities in which local seniors can participate. “We did woodcarving last session, in the spring, with Diane Irwin,” she said. “That was very successful, and it was quite surprising how well the carvers developed in eight weeks. What they produced was surprising to them, and to us. She’ll be having two eight-week sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings; we’re hoping to get both those filled up. We have room for about eight people in each of those days.” Physical activity will also figure prominently in this season’s program, as always. “Angela Kimmett has come back to the community, so she’s always a very popular instructor. She’s doing Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8 a.m., for those who want to get up bright and early and get their day off to a good start,’ said Sledz. There are also euchre, bridge, knitting, quilting groups. On top of an overall membership fee of $35, each session usually costs around $3. Not every activity, however, has a fee attached. Among them are a series of educational workshops, including a ‘memory strategies’ workshop that’s planned for Sept. 27, organized by Penny Robertson. In October, the workshop theme will be ‘getting a good night sleep.’ “We’re thrilled to have Penny on board to provide the mentoring and leadership in that activity. That’s something we haven’t been able to do in the last year or so. We’re very pleased to be able to offer that to community, and they’re going to be free workshops as well,” said Sledz. She said they’re also planning a financial education workshop as well.

COMMUNITY PULSE NAPANEE PIONEER SQUARE DANCE CLUB You’re invited to join them on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Southview Public School at 18 Golf Course Lane in Napanee or on Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Church at Bridge and Robert Streets in Napanee for two free nights of dancing, with refreshments to follow. The woodworking workshop is among many activities planned for this season. Each year, L&A SOS has provided a driver refresher program — and this year is no exception. “We’ve been doing that for several years now, and we’re going to have another one on Oct. 4. We do charge for that, it’s a bit of a fundraiser for us, but it’s very valuable, and everyone that has taken it has come back with very positive comments,” said Sledz. “As people are aging and they have to do their Ministry of Transportation testing, they like to come in and get a little bit of a refresher and get re-acquainted,” she added. “Rules have changed somewhat, too. There are always new rules of the road, and (this provides) tips on how they can drive more safely.” With these and many other programs to provide, L&A SOS requires an army of volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. Sledz says that, right now, the organization needs a few more helping hands. There are plenty of jobs to do, too. “The kitchen, for instance, where we do Meals on Wheels, they put out hundreds of meals, and they’re

PELA CFDC chips in funding for three local businesses BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Last week, the Prince Edward-Lennox and Addington Community Futures Development Corporation announced funding for three local businesses through the Eastern Ontario Development Program. Stinson Studios of Tamworth, JPlant of Napanee and Vi-LUX of Napanee all received contributions through the program. Local MP Mike Bossio announced the funding in a series of visits to the companies last Tuesday. Vi-LUX, located on Richmond Boulevard, manufactures cellular PVC extrusions for the construction, door and window industry. It was the beneficiary of the largest funding amount of $38,5450, which was used to establish a new extrusion line for small pro-

files for its door components program. The company anticipates that the new production capacity will allow it to grow its export business with additional door component products, while maintaining and creating employment at its Napanee facility. Stinson Studios, meanwhile, benefitted from a $10,400 investment, an amount that will be used to implement improvements to the custom lathe used in the production of wooden bowls. Among those improvements is a powered swing to stabilize and enhance the capabilities of the knives; a programmable linear actuator; and an override control for the computer-guided program. Stinson Studios is Canada’s largest volume manufacturer of wooden bowls, specializing in producing some of the most expensive and high-quality

tabletop serving products available in North America. JPlant — a wholesale propagation nursery specializing in bamboo, ornamental shrubs and grasses for commercial retailers — received $9,150 to purchase a new industrial horticultural trimmer, an irrigation and controls system and desalination equipment. It’s believed that the improvements will increase plant propogation, maintenance efficiency and productivity. PELA CFDC is one of 15 such organizations across eastern Ontario charged with spurring economic development across the region. It is funded by the EODP through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, better known as FedDev Ontario. FedDev Ontario invests $48 million in funding through the 15 individual CFDCs located in eastern Ontario.

Screening idea a losing one

J. Earl Morrison, Owner-Publisher, 1953-1978

The Conservative Party leadership campaign hasn’t been attracting much attention so far. That changed this weekend when one of the leadership hopefuls, Kellie Leitch, floated the idea of a ‘Canadian values’ Combined in 1965 screening of immigrants seeking to move to this with The Napanee Express (EST. 1861) country. The idea was introduced as part of a survey to and The Deseronto prospective supporters, asking them if this would be Post (EST. 1904) something they’d like to see a government implement in the future. It’s also eerily similar to an An independent ‘American-values’ screening proposed by controversial U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald community Trump. We’re not sure what kind of feedback Leitch got from her questionnaire, but the concept got a newspaper thumbs-down from some of her fellow competitors (like Michael Chong and Maxime Bernier) as well as the party’s interim leader, Rona Ambrose. JEAN MORRISON Some of the objections suggested that such a polOWNER & icy unfairly paints would-be new Canadians in a PUBLISHER negative light. “You make us feel unwelcome,” said Deepak Obhrai — another one of Leitch’s competiSALES MANAGER tors in the leadership contest and who happens to SCOTT JOHNSTON have been born outside of Canada — when interMANAGING EDITOR viewed by the CBC. SETH DUCHENE Clearly, it’s a proposal that makes some people uncomfortable. It’s reminiscent of the ‘barbaric culBUSINESS MANAGER tural practices’ tipline that, perhaps more than anyDEBBIE MCCANN thing else, deep-sixed the Conservatives’ chances in PRODUCTION MANAGER the last federal election. In that light, no wonder MICHELLE BOWES there are some in the Tory ranks who are more ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE than a little reluctant to wade back into these probDIANE GROSE lematic waters. The only method we can think of is a questionnaire or an interview — on either of which a determined ‘un-Canadian values’ immigrant could easily lie. Further, how do we decide on what our ‘Canadian’ values are in the first place? While we understand the argument that ‘just because something is difficult doesn’t it make it worth doing’, we don’t think it’s worth doing from the get-go; the payoff in terms of added safety would be negligible, and we don’t think the government should be in the business of enforcing some nebulous goal of cultural homogeneity. Staff Picks: Royal Wedding Kristin Maloney, a member of the library’s relief staff, recently enjoyed Royal Wedding. This is a new novel from Meg Cabot, the New York Times bestselling author of the Princess Diaries series. “This is the very first ‘adult’ installment in the series, which allows us to step back into the world of Princess Mia and learn how her delightful tale will end,” says Kristin. “I was always a big fan of this series growing up, and I completely enjoyed seeing the story acted out on the big screen.” Kristin explains that this newest book allows us to see what life is like for Mia, now in her mid-20s, by reading her entire journal. “It was always a memorable trademark of this series to be able to witness the life of this unlikely princess through her teenage diaries. So, when the author carried this over into the newest book, I felt exhilarated by this decision. For Princess Mia, the past five years since college graduation have been a whirlwind of activities and events from living in New York, to run-

ning her new teen community center, and let’s not forget being madly in love with her long-time boyfriend named Michael. The true fun starts when Michael takes Mia on an exotic

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes Caribbean island getaway and finally pops the question we have all been waiting for! Of course, Mia’s answer is a quick yes, but will the couple be able to make it down the aisle with the illustrious royal Genovian family dealing with a scandal of huge proportions? Or will Michael be able to stay calm and not leave Mia in the dust when her troublemaking grandmother leaks ‘fake’ wedding plans to the press? No matter what happens you will be sure to get lots of smiles and many laughs from reading this book. “Overall, this is a very lighthearted and romantic novel that fans of the series will definitely enjoy, but it

also has a much wider appeal to an older audience than the previous books, which lends itself to those who are new to the world of Princess Diaries. Through it all, Mia is still the loveable, anxious and awkward character she has been since book one. Meg Cabot has a talent for creating hilarious dialogue and zany characters, but she also creates a story that is full of heart and soul, which is why fans who grew up with Mia will relish the opportunity to spend more time in her world,” Kristin concludes. “I encourage people who already know Princess Mia to read this book right away, and I would also suggest it to more mature newcomers for a funny, yet heartwarming novel that is royally perfect form start to finish.” You can reserve Royal Wedding in print or e-book format at your local branch of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries or online at www.countylibrary.ca. Dealing with the drought The following is a monthly column designed to teach local residents about the wild animals that live among us. Marilyn Kendall is writing the column for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, a Napanee-based facility that cares for injured wildlife. We’ve all felt the consequences of the drought this summer and have worried over the fate of our lawns, plants and trees. But have you considered the effects of the long, dry period on area wildlife? I hadn’t, although I had noticed some unusual occurrences in my yard and garden over the summer. The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre was greatly impacted by the drought, reporting more than 2,700 animal rescues as of the end of August,

One reason SPWC is so busy this summer is because rehabilitated animals cannot be released into an environment where there is insufficient food and water for survival. So they remain in care, needing to be fed. The demands on the centre’s resources have been immense. Even though the rains have finally come, it is too little too late. The grass will green up but other food sources will not so easily be replenished, many taking until next summer to be restored. In the meantime, it seems Sandy Pines will be overbooked for some time yet.

Letter to the Editor

Help to fight childhood cancer September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, about 900 children under 15 years of age are diagnosed with cancer in Canada. At the Canadian Cancer Society, we believe that one child with cancer is too many. In addition to raising awareness, we are investing heavily in Canada’s best childhood cancer research, as well as providing families with vital support programs so they do not have to face cancer alone. We are the largest national charitable funder of childhood cancer research in

Canada, and have invested $47 million in childhood cancer research over the past 15 years. And we have seen progress as a result of these investments. Each year, we also help hundreds of families with kids with cancer across Ontario get to their cancer-related appointments. In 2016, our Frontenac, Lennox and Addington office funded 21 families for a total of 1,144 trips to treatments through our transportation program. Thank you to our community for participating in our local events like Relay

For Life, Mudmoiselle and Daffodil Month as these events provide the funds necessary to finance this important and life-saving work. While progress is being made, we know that there is still more work to be done because childhood cancer is still the No. 1 cause of disease-related death in Canadian children. This September, we are asking the Frontenac and L&A communities to join us at the first-annual Neon Night, presented by Midas Kingston. On Sept. 24 at

Lake Ontario Park from 610 p.m., please join us for a family fun carnival, neon parade and Abby Stewart concert to raise funds that will be designated specifically to CCS Childhood Cancer research. Please join our Young Cancer Ambassadors and their families for a funfilled evening with a purpose. To register, go to www.cancer.ca/neonnighttkingston or call our local office at 613-384-2361. Doug Kane, Senior Manager, Community, Canadian Cancer Society

■ Napanee’s Police Chief Harry Benn was stepping down from his position after 15 years — but he wasn’t leaving altogether. The outgoing chief accepted a job as a constable on the force after resigning from the top post. Neither Benn — who was gone on three weeks’ holidays — or the town’s market and police committee chair W.R. Douglas explained why the move happened. The town had called for a third-party review of the town force by the Ontario Police Commission earlier in the year, in the hopes of finding savings in the department. ■ A race horse that had been imported from Romania had to be destroyed after being hit by a car. The accident happened on Highway 502 west of Napanee. The horse — a four-and-a-half-year-old standard bred male — had recently been purchased for $10,000 and brought to Canada. The horse had been stabled with several other horses, and was running in the field shortly before the mishap occurred. The driver of the vehicle was not hurt.

35 Years Ago September 9, 1981 ■ A massive fire destroyed a barn in Morven, causing $100,000 in damages. The barn was about 100 years old. At the time of the fire, it contained 800 bales of straw, 11 calves and 60 chickens. The farmer was able to save one of the calves. Luckily, most of his cattle were out to pasture when the fire started. It was not clear why the fire started, although the farmer said he thought that wiring or spontaneous combustion were the likely culprits The farmer had left the barn a half-hour earlier. He was alerted to the fire by a passing motorist. ■ An $80,000 plan to beautiful the Napanee Town Hall was presented to council. The plan was developed by Totten Sims Hubicki Assoc. It included plans for a fountain, trees, a new market area and wheelchair access to the town hall. About three-quarters of the project would be paid for through a community services contribution program grant received by the town. The Napanee Kinsmen and the Downtown Merchants Association expressed interest in sharing some of the remaining costs; more grant money was also a possibility.

Weekend-long rock festival to hit fairgrounds

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Mötley Crüe, Jimi Hendrix and Pearl Jam are just a small sample of the artists that will have tribute acts in their name at Voodoo Rockfest, which comes to the Napanee Fairgrounds Sept. 23-25. Though the event is quite possibly the first ever rock and roll festival to come to town, it’s certainly not starting small. Boasting a lineup of 26 bands, two stages, vendors, food trucks, craft beers and weekend camping, organizer Joe Matthews is looking to make a big splash and establish the festival as a premier event right off the hop. “I’m trying to promote local music and I thought a

great way to do it was by having a bunch of tribute bands that people recognize and know the names of,” said Matthews. “They’ll come for those people and then discover all the amazing local bands that I have on the bill.” Tribute acts to bands such as Tool, Rage Against The Machine and the Stone Temple Pilots will share the stage with several bands playing original music as well. As a promoter and operator of www.Musicfly.ca, Matthews already had a great working relationship with several acts in the Belleville, Napanee and Kingston area. He says it was easy to sell bands on the idea of a large scale rock and roll festival in Napanee, even though there hadn’t been one in the area before.

“Some of the bands really see the potential to grow the festival,” said Matthews. “They realize all festivals start small so to be invited to the first one and be hand selected, they feel pretty lucky to be a part of it.” Once he had the bands on board, he began working with local restaurants and craft brewers to provide a unique menu for concert goers. In an effort to make it a family event, Matthews says there will be face painting, a balloon artists and ice cream for children on Saturday and Sunday morning. He says the family area will also had a great view of the stage for parents. “We wanted a place where we couple expose younger people to music,” said Matthews. “Get them

off their tablets and Netflix for a couple of days….you never forget your first concert. You absolutely don’t.” Matthews says the event is also great for teens in Napanee who don’t get to see many concerts without having to travel outside of town. “It’s a win for everyone,” said Matthews. “It’s a real community effort. This kind

of things exposes music to the whole community. It creates a community atmosphere. It’s going to be something new to the comity but something that’s very needed. There’s not a lot for kids to do in that area.” Tickets for the event are available at Marie’s Place in Napanee or online at www.MusicFly.ca and searching the Kingston and

Napanee area events. They also have a Voodoo Rockfest Facebook page. Weekend passes are $55 and also includes weekend trailer or RV camping on site. Children 10 and under are free. Tickets will also be sold at the gate the day of the event for $60. A full list of the bands and set times can also be found at Matthews’ website.

Fiddle camp returns to Tamworth BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A bevy of accomplished musicians will lend their talents in support of Bernie’s Fiddle and Guitar Camp, which returns to Tamworth Elementary School this Saturday. Now in its 13th year, the one-day camp once again includes fiddle and guitar workshops, while new this year will be a mandolin session. The fiddle teachers include Gordon Stobbe, Sherryl Fitzpatrick, Stephanie Lepine and Ben Plotnick. They will have classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced fiddlers. The guitar teacher is Keith Glass (of Prairie Oyster) who will hold intermediate and advanced classes while Mike Mezzatesta will teach mandolin. Students will need at least one year experience with playing the mandolin for the camp.

Top-notch fiddler Gordon Stobbe (centre) will once again be one of the instructors at Bernie’s Fiddle and Guitar Camp. Mezzatesta is now a popular musician on the Toronto music scene and was also a one-time student of the camp. He is one of just many students who have gone on to great success in the music industry, which is exactly what organizers had hopes for when they first founded the camp. “It’s in memory of my husband Bernie Jaffe,” explains Faun Bank who has organized the event every year. “When he passed we wanted to keep his music going. He was a performer and had a music stu-

dio in Tamworth.” The cost for the camp is $70 per person or $35 for anyone under the age of 18. A lunch is provided. Registration can be done by em a i l i n g faun.fiddlecamp@gmail.com or by calling 613-379-2469. Bank also helps keep her husband’s passion alive through a fund in his name, which helps sponsor the Tamworth camp as well as through bursaries for students to attend work shops. Music students are nominated by their teachers and if they meet the criteria

they are eligible for a grant to continue to pursue music. Following Saturday’s workshop the camp instructors will hold a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Tamworth Legion. Admission is $15 for adults, $7 for teens and children under 12 are free. The money raised will go towards Bernie’s Fiddle and Guitar Camp. “We try to keep the prices low so that families can afford to go,” said Bank. “The whole idea is to provide wonderful, high quality music at an affordable price.”

You may want to kill me for saying this, but I say, ‘bring on the critters.’ If you happen to be fortunate enough to find yourself in Invermere B.C. any time soon you will notice that

deer there have developed a palate for just about every living thing with leaves. Squirrels have this in common with deer, I find. When they are finished eating everything in sight that

comes naturally to them, they start chowing down and destroying many of the plants that are not normally on their menu. “Why is a red squirrel ripping the bark off my mature sugar maple?” one reader asked. My answer: “I have no idea.” To get the answer you would have to get inside the brain of a squirrel and I am just not interested enough in the subject to become a full time neuro-student of squirrels. I say, ‘garden calm and I will carry on,’ with apologies to my British friends. I do not have deer or rabbits in my garden. I hear the horror stories about them when I travel, mostly out of the densely populated urban centres of the country and into the small towns and rural areas. While on a speaking engagement in Muskoka recently, I took questions from the audience. The enquiries about deer damage quickly became a theme of the evening. “Everyone with a deer problem, there is a special meeting afterwards. We will sit in a circle and have a deer therapy session,” I suggested. It got a laugh but we did not meet afterwards and there were no definitive answers to this dilemma. This column is not for deer-victims. It is for the more urban set that wake up to raccoon scat on the patio or skunk smells where they were grubbing for grubs in the lawn. I know your frustration with rodents as many of them are dumped at the end of our driveway at our property north of the city. You want racoons, skunks and squirrels? We have them in

This home-made critter ‘hotel’ welcomes the kind of tenants some might consider to be garden nuisances. spades. Many are ‘city rodents’. We can tell because they act kind of confused: raccoons that wander around in the day time looking for shelter and squirrels that are chased around by their more local, native cousins. They look lost because they are. But they do precious little damage. For the most part, they seem to be a nuisance when we pay too much attention to them. There are many critters that we tend to demonize. Bats do not advertise well. We have many notions about them that are not grounded in fact. While they can carry rabies, they are less likely to than ground dwelling rodents and coyotes. They may bite if you cornered one, but I cannot find reports of them biting humans. Bats consume flying insects in voracious quantities. They can consume enough mosquitoes to equal their body weight in one evening. Bat populations are generally in decline and that is too bad: we need more native bats. Snakes get a bad rap too. I have no idea why. I think that the story about the Garden of Eden did them a poor service and set them up to fail in the public relations department. Perhaps the fact that they are cold-blooded is a turn off for some people. The truth is, they control mice and large insects like slugs, earwigs, grubs and the like quite effectively. What is

not to like? Except they aren’t cute. Chipmunks are cute. And we are overrun with them. This summer they have burrowed under the locust tree in my back yard with abandon. They run and jump and skip and play, chasing each other like identical twin boys with way too much energy. Sometimes they make us laugh out loud. Any damage that occurs in our yard due to excess chipmunk activity is forgiven because they are cute. You know what aren’t cute? Coyotes. They come over to our place most evenings and howl at the moon and each other between midnight and four in the morning, often right under our bedroom window. Coyotes are like the screaming baby that is not satisfied by a bottle of warm milk: they just seem to enjoy howling. Coyotes are the reason why I yawn a lot mid afternoon this time of year. They may also be the reason why I don’t have deer or rabbit problems in my garden. Perhaps I should send a few of them to Invermere. Mark Cullen is an expert gardener, author and broadcaster. Napanee’s Elliott and Lambert shine on U16 rugby pitch Quartet of up-and-coming rugby stars cement town’s reputation as rugby hotbed

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ritt Benn put Greater Napanee on the rugby radar this summer, and there’s a crop of rising superstars who will make sure it stays there for a long time. While Benn was earning bronze in Rio as a member of the national sevens team, closer to home the Napanee duo of Charlotte Elliott and Hayley Lambert capped their summer by helping the U16 Ontario 15s team to the Canadian title in Markham, Ont. Aug. 16-21. Sean Dunleavy, who coached the provincial team, also coached the girls last spring with the NDSS Golden Hawks rugby program. “It was a great experience for them to get that rep level,” Dunleavy said of Lambert and Elliot. “They did quite well. They were multiple game starters. Hayley was part of our leadership group. Both caught a lot of attention for their play through the entire week. I'm going to be surprised if they don’t have some other opportunities coming their way at some point in the near future.” Both girls, along with Napanee’s Cailyn Barton, also played on the Eastern Ontario U16 team at the Eastern Canada Championship in New Brunswick,

where they earned gold. Also taking part at the U18 level was NDSS’ Erika Barton, where she helped her squad capture the silver medal. Unfortunately, an injury prevented her from suiting up for the provincial team at the national level in Markham. Overall it was an extremely successful rugby season for several of Napanee’s athletes, starting with the high school season. “It’s been a nice stretch from the KASSAA finals, EOSSAA to Eastern Ontario competition and then the national championship as well,” said Dunleavy. The players will now have the option of trying to play some sevens rugby this fall to wrap-up the season. The high school team will begin its training for the KASSAA 15s season in February. They’ll be looking to recapture the KASSAA and eastern Ontario title that eluded them in 2016. As much of a hotbed for rugby as Napanee is right now, it figures to only get stronger going forward. With the success of Benn at the Olympic level coupled with the latest core making their name at the provincial level, young athletes should have no shortage of inspiration should they wish to take up rugby.

In the meantime, anyone with gear they’d like to donate can call Huyck at 613-328-4250. Last year, the drive was so successful that NDMH was able to not only help

several local players, but to ship some gear up north to Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. That gear went to the small hamlet as they were just launching their hockey program. Huyck says the executive board would once again look to do something similar once they fill the needs of all of their local players. Any updates will be posted to www.NDMHA.ca in the coming days. Meanwhile the Stars will continue to hold tryouts throughout this week with games set to get under this weekend as the Novice BB welcome North Frontenac for an exhibition home game at 12 p.m.

Team president Morris Hart first announced the move at the team's year end banquet, citing the fact that Fridays would be more convenient for families to show up to the Strathcona Paper Centre arena. Fans will get accustomed to the idea of Friday night hockey tomorrow night when the Raiders welcome the Gananoque Islanders to the SPC for a 7:30 p.m. exhibition game. That will wrap up the preseason for Napanee. That game is expected to feature many of the regulars who will be in the Opening Night lineup are expected to suit up for tomorrow’s game. Napanee was in Gananoque last night for their second of three pre-season games. Results weren’t known at press time. longtime rival Jets followed by Sept. 22 against the Picton Pirates in Picton. Their first home game will be on Sept. 25 against Campbellford. After that they will be home pretty well every Friday throughout the season, which runs through Feb. 11. They close out the regular season in Campbellford that night. All of Napanee’s home games will feature their familiar 7:30 p.m. start. Among the notable games will be Oct. 15, which will when they travel to Port Hope to face the Panthers for the first time since they were eliminated by them last February. The Panthers have swept Napanee in the league finals in back-to-back years and subsequently reached the Ontario finals in each of those years, only to finish as the runner ups. Port Hope makes their first trip to Napanee on Oct. 21. Napanee was 24-12-4 last season, finishing second in the league. They bested the Amherstview Jets in five games in the semifinals to advance to their second straight league finals. As with previous years, the schedule will consist of 40 games with each of the league’s six teams playing each other eight times, four at home, four on the road. The top four teams will advance to the league playoffs where one plays four and two plays three in a best-of-seven series. The winners of those series will then play for the league title and the right to represent the league in the Schmalz Cup playoffs. A team from this league has reach the finals in three of the last four seasons. Napanee hasn’t qualified for the Schmalz Cup playoffs since 2010, when they reached the semifinals. They won their one and only Schmalz Cup championship back in 1993.

Nature workshop to focus on alvars Beaver Staff

It’s a common kind of ecosystem to this area, but it’s rare to the world. Local residents can learn more about alvars at a workshop set for later this month. ‘Talk on the Rock: The Alvar Grassland Stewardship Workshop’ will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Roblin Wesleyan Church at 3100 County Road 41 in Roblin on Sept. 20 The Napanee Limestone Plain is one of North America’s great alvar landscapes; they are naturally open habitats with very thin or no soil over limestone bedrock. As such, they allow for natural communities that can’t exist elsewhere. The workshop will feature speakers in the morning and a field trip in the afternoon. Participants will learn about the importance of the unique plants and wildlife that live in these areas, and the programs

that support alvar and grassland conservation. Guests should leave with the tools and resources needed to steward these rare features on their property. In the afternoon, participants will visit alvar and grassland sites in Newburgh and Roblin to see examples of these habitats as well as stewardship projects being undertaken by landowners. Registration cost is $15 per person, with lunch and refreshments provided. Contact Andrea at andrea.klymko@ontario.ca or at 613-531-5703 to register. The workshop is hosted by the Napanee Plain Joint Initiative, which includes many groups such as Wildlife Preservation Canada, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Bird Studies Canada, Kingston Field Naturalists, local Stewardship Councils and local Land Conservancies. Financial support is provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry - Species at Risk Stewardship Fund.

2016

Almost time to lace ‘em up for Napanee Terry Fox run

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Napanee will join the hundreds of communities across Canada on Sept. 18 in hosting its own Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research. Departing from the Napanee Mall, participants will have their choice of either a five- or 10-kilometre course through the downtown and back to the mall. They also have the option to run, walk, jog or ride; the event isn’t competitive but rather just about getting the community out and raising funds for life saving research. “Our main goal is to keep getting people out and if we can raise more money each year, that’s even better,” said Napanee Terry Fox Run co-ordinator Gary O’Neil. “Eighty-four cents from each dollar goes directly to the (Terry Fox) Foundation itself for cancer research.” O’Neil returns for his fifth year as the local chair and has overseen fairly consistent numbers in terms of participants and dollars raised. Last year saw 141 people take part while raising $10,643. Couple that with the

$7,000 raised by local schools and Napanee was able to contribute about $17,000 to the national cause in 2015. “Our goal is always to try and increase it,” said O’Neil. “Since I’ve taken over in 2012 we started out with about $8,000, and that was mainly because they didn’t really know whether or not we were going to have it. We’ve been averaging about $10,000 each year.” This will mark the 36th year Napanee has participated, with $519,439.61 total raised over that time frame. Registration for the walk can be done online by searching Terry Fox Run 2016-Napanee on Facebook or by logging onto www.TerryFox.ca/TerryFoxRun/Napanee. Donations can also be made online as well. Opening ceremonies for the event will be held in the Napanee Mall parking lot at 9 a.m. and participants can depart anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Local sponsors of McDonald’s and Tim Horton’s will once again provide refreshments. The route will be the same as last year’s though downtown construction on Bridge Street may force just a slight detour.

The course will be well marked and participants will be given maps. Napanee will be just one of more than 800 communities that hold a similar event on Sept. 18 with hundreds of thousands of Canadians expected to take part. The run is held every September to commemorate Fox’s original Marathon of Hope, which he embarked on in 1980 with the intent to run from St. John’s, NFLD to Victoria B.C. to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. His leg was amputated due to cancer just three years before he set on his run on April 12, 1980. Running an average of 42 kilometres per day, Fox was near Thunder Bay, Ont. when he was forced to cut his run short on Sept. 1 due to cancer spreading to his lungs. He passed away just nine months later. Today his spirit lives on through the Terry Fox Foundation and his annual run, which is held the second Sunday after Labour Day in Canada as well as in 32 countries across the globe. On Sept. 29 several schools across Canada, including Napanee, will hold a similar fundraising run.
