The Strathcona Paper Centre and Selby Community Hall could both be hosts to new rooftop solar installations in the not-too-distant future. It was during last year’s municipal election that the town was first approached about the projects, and the idea was presented to councillors during orientation. According to Kevin Hill, the director of parks, recreation and culture, a number of companies pitched the idea. “We do have five or six companies that have expressed interest, and we will be contacting them immediately with the Request For Proposal,” he said. “The objective for the RFP being released by the town is to gather proposals offering solutions, with design, installation and revenue structures.” Only after all submissions have been reviewed will the town decide whether to lease or purchase the equipment necessary, Hill said. “Right now we’re only looking at proposals for the Selby hall and the Strathcona Paper Centre,” he added. “It is for roof-mounted solar systems that will provide the municipality with a revenue stream. We’ll wait and see what the proposals bring.” Hill told the Beaver that council expressed an interest in exploring the possibilities early on. “The Request For Proposal is nearly completed and hopefully will be released late this week or early next week,” he said. “The mayor (Gord Schermerhorn) had mentioned that he would like to have something back in February, so we’ll try to keep it as tight as possible.” He said that companies that have expressed an interest will receive the RFP document by e-mail, in addition to it being posted on the town’s web page and being advertised in the municipality’s newspaper column. An update from Hill is expected before council sometime in February.

The idea is that while some people are good in some areas, they may struggle in others. It’s in fine shape, short of some missing bristles and the awkward stiffness is easily corrected with a bit of water. There is no reason to waste money, right?” You are absolutely right. Why did you waste your money on new paint? Chances are you haven’t kept your paint brush in tip top shape. A quick rinse with soapy water and a few violent swings of the brush outside does not count as proper TLC. Nor does whacking your bristled buddy against the shed or deck! If the brutal assault against the shed didn’t rip the bristles out of their home, chances are they ran off when you weren’t looking. It’s 2011. Give that paint brush to your son for his crafts! Spending a five spot will do you wonders. Brushes are a painting staple. The principle is very simple. The bristles of a quality brush pick up the paint and as the brush is drawn along the surface, the paint flows from the bristles out onto the surface in a nice even coat. A brush is not designed to wipe paint onto a surface; instead it is designed to allow for even flow onto a surface. When you dip a brush into paint, don’t think about covering it with paint, think about filling it with paint. Then, with a minimal amount of pressure and a slow, even stroke you will allow the paint to flow. If you are sceptical test it yourself. Take both a low quality and a good quality paint brush, dip them into the same can of paint at the same depth and see how much more paint the better quality brush holds. The increased volume of paint held by the quality brush, allows for the even flow of paint. The best paint brush to have in your toolbox is an angled brush that is 2 1/2 - 3 inches wide. A new year’s resolution HERE is much speculation that Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty won’t be Liberal leader by the time the next provincial election rolls in 2015. In a interview last Thursday with the CTV, the premier hinted that if he and his party are re-elected to government in the upcoming vote this October, he’ll step away from the top job before Ontarians go to the polls again. Well, talk about hypotheticals. When talking about the Liberals being reelected to government in October, that’s a very big ‘what-if ’, if recent opinion polls in the province are to be believed. Those polls show that the Progressive Conservatives have a healthy lead among voters. Saddled with blowback from the Harmonized Sales Tax and rising energy costs, the Liberals flagging in popularity should come as no great shock to anyone. Of course, anything can happen — we need look no further than the last provin-

cial election campaign. In the months leading up to the vote, the PCs under the leadership of John Tory appeared to be poised to usurp McGuinty and the Liberals. Then Tory released his controversial plan to provide public funding for private religious schools, and the PCs’ electoral fortunes went off the rails in dramatic fashion. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility for something similar to occur this October — if it happened once, it can happen again — but the Liberals probably shouldn’t rest their hopes on tactical missteps on the part of their political opponents. What’s perhaps more surprising, given the political landscape in Ontario, is that McGuinty hasn’t stepped down already. His return as premier is far from being assured. Then again, since he became leader of the party way back in 1996, McGuinty was quite often written off for dead. Remember the ‘Dump Dalton’ campaign that made the rounds shortly

after his first electoral defeat at the hands of Mike Harris back in 1999? More often than not, McGuinty has proven wrong those who would underestimate him, and he has shown the ability to come up off the mat before being counted out. Much to the chagrin of his detractors, McGuinty has proven himself to be resilient. However, getting the opportunity to be able step down as premier — and not leader of the opposition — following the next provincial election will undoubtedly be his toughest task yet.

The evil results of alcohol are noted every day in area newspapers. A few days ago one informed us that highway alcohol related deaths were up one-third in 2010 over 2009. Almost 50 per cent of highway accidents have an alcohol component. I cannot comprehend completely the sorrowful adjustments that have to be made in the families involved. And yet alcohol is promoted on television, with laughing comments by announcers about drinking. Society is kidding itself and nobody seems to take notice. A recent statement I saw noted that alcohol is the No. 1 drug problem in Canada. Most every edition of a newspaper tell of an arrest, a domestic disturbance, an assault, an accident, a rape or murder as the result of alcohol A few years ago I heard the crash near my house when a drunk driver hit another vehicle and killed a woman that was a wife and mother. My wife just said sarcastically to me, “It really sounds like fun.” Just remember the sad story of the death of a lad in an Ottawa parking garage when the Tobin man was allegedly having a drunken fun time with a rented vehicle. Do you recall seeing on TV the tears of the distraught mothers? Those tears are repeated thousands of time each year across Canada. Perhaps it’s every day. When will we wake up? In Canada we make a big fuss about the health effects of tobacco. But alcohol gets a free ride with our Ontario government making money out of the carnage that comes from drinking. Something doesn’t compute — doesn’t add up. We need to come to our senses and change our attitude about alcohol. Roy C. Kenny, Napanee

New opportunities for OFA in 2011 his year was an important one for the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Over the past 12 months we have made significant strides in solidifying future opportunities for farmers through our collaborative work with farm organizations, government and our industry partners. The beginning of a new year always provides opportunity and interest in looking ahead to make plans for success in the months ahead. Most of us begin January with a sense of optimism, considering the possibilities and how we will achieve our goals. The OFA is no different. As always, this will be an exciting and actionpacked year for the OFA, acting on several key issues while preparing for a busy political calendar. The OFA celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. While we take the time to remind ourselves of our proud history, we continually keep our eye on the target of improving the social and economic wellbeing of farmers in collaboration with our agricultural partners. Several key issues stand out that we will continue to work on throughout the coming year. This year, we will be launching our Proud to Lead campaign – a program to identify and develop leadership potential across Ontario to ensure our proud history is sustained. We’ll also focus on a critical priority of members from all areas of the province for the proper handling of predator issues. We will revamp the OFA Predator Task Team to take stock of the situation and breathe new life into our predator and wildlife damage needs. In addition, we will be working on further refinement of beginning farmer policies and programs, Biomass research projects and green energy initiatives, the ongoing development and finalization of the National Food Strategy, formalization

of OFA governance policies, completion of the Open for Business process to ease regulatory concerns, and launching the new OFA website and social media procedures to name just a few important actions. All of this work will be performed in the context of an election year. We are working towards the provincial election in October but also carefully watching the federal landscape. Nothing enables the promotion of the agricultural agenda and key issues better than an election. We have filed an important pre-election briefing with the Ontario government in the form of our Pre-Budget briefing. In it we have identified important fiscal and nonfiscal policy measures the Ontario government can enact to improve the farm sector and our province’s economy as a result. We will refine these messages in the spring as provincial politicians begin touring Ontario in advance of the October vote. Likewise, we will be prepared for action in Ottawa if and when a federal election is called. There is no question the National Food Strategy, as a set of governing objectives for good agricultural and food policy, will be a key election issue. Our success in influencing will continue to lie with our collective ability to convey a strong and consistent message on our critical issues. To help make that happen, I urge all farmers to stay informed and involved in your organization. Contribute to the policy debates and take the messages to our policy makers on every occasion. As our 75 years of history have proven, there is no voice stronger than a unified farm voice. We wish you all the best for the New Year and look forward to working with you. If you were starving what would you do? Most of us would go to our fridge and get a snack but some people in the world don’t have a fridge or even access to food. This is called starvation. A group of three girls from Odessa Public School are doing a project called Challenge For Change. Challenge For Change is an assignment where each student in the Challenge Programs decides on a way to make a difference in their local or global communities. The girls chose hunger

because they could not imagine going without food for one day let alone months or years. The girls created three paintings about world hunger in order to raise awareness. Awesome possums moving into area Ken Ashton admits that he is fairly good at knowing what animal makes tracks in his backyard north of Trenton, but those that appeared one recent night had him scratching his head. Then, one afternoon, he spotted a Virginia opossum strolling from the edge of the woods to his bird feeder where it proceeded to forage on the spilled seeds on the ground beneath the feeder. It even allowed Ken to take a photo which he forwarded to me in an e-mail. This is the second report of an opossum that has come to my attention this past year. Earlier last year, wildlife rehabilitator Sue Meech of the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee showed me an opossum that she had in her care. The animal she carried in her arms came from Peterborough, considerably north of southwestern Ontario where one usually expects to find these solitary and nomadic animals. Past sightings from anywhere east of Toronto have most always been shrugged off as simply unlucky opossums that had curled up on the framework of transports and woke up someplace else. Not necessary so, says Sue Meech. She knows of two opossum groups in Frankford, and one in Roblin. On top of which,

the individual in her care is a juvenile, suggesting that it was born in Peterborough and not on a Kenworth hauling produce. She believes they are migrating to the rest of Ontario from the Southwest where they are common. Numerous road killed opossums can be seen along Highway 400, she says, and she has never really subscribed to the hitch hiker theory, although the 1994 Atlas of the Mammals of Ontario strongly suggests that this may have been the case with sightings as far north as Massey. Several sightings in the Bloomfield area in 1997, one of which was a rare albino, were thought to have arrived on one of the many Georgia and area transports that came occasionally to the old Cobie Foods Plant in that village. That they never really became established in Prince Edward County, and there have been no further sightings, suggest that these particular individuals did not arrive on their own volition. But is it just a matter of time as our winters are now much milder than they were several decades ago, allowing these shy little creatures to survive despite the occasional individual coming through the winter with frost bitten ears and tails. Outdoor R ambles tainly did not display the growling, hissing traits that popular legend purports them to show when approached by humans. And at no time did it hang by its tail from Sue’s arm! Another myth that remains popular, although opossum young will occasionally do this. Their semiprehensile tails are not strong enough to support a mature adult’s weight. Instead, the opossum uses its tail as a brace and a fifth limb when climbing. The tail is occasionally used as a grip to carry bunches of leaves or bedding materials to the nest. That opossums are able to play dead is also a bit of a myth.

At least, it is believed that opossums don’t play dead intentionally. Rather, it is an involuntary physiological response, brought on by fear. The lips will be drawn back, teeth bared, saliva foams around the mouth, and a foulsmelling fluid is secreted from the anal glands. Their stiff, curled form can be prodded, turned over, and even carried away. The animal will regain consciousness after a period of minutes or hours and escape. As many predators will only eat live prey, it is a successful escape maneuver that has served the opossum well. They are actually shy, gentle animals who rely on stealth and nocturnal lifestyles to minimize human encounters. There are more than 60 different species of opossum in the world, which are often called just plain possums. The most notable is the Virginia opossum - the only marsupial (pouched mammal) found in the United States and Canada. A female opossum gives birth to helpless young as tiny as honeybees. Babies immediately

crawl into the mother’s pouch, where they continue to develop. As they get larger, they will go in and out of the pouch and sometimes ride on the mother’s back as she hunts for food. Opossums may give birth to as many as 20 babies in a litter, but fewer than half of them survive. So, keep your eyes open from now on at your bird feeders for these nocturnal creatures. They certainly seem to be increasing across Ontario and will provide an interesting addition to the nocturnal brigade to our feeders which now includes cottontail rabbits, flying squirrels, and a host of others that allow us to enjoy our feeders 24-7, instead of just in the daylight hours. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 60 Years Ago January 10, 1951 n The Lennox and Addington Public Health Unit issued a warning that chickenpox cases were on the rise throughout the county. “The patient should be isolated, especially from other children in the family, until the scabs come off the affected skin areas, which usually takes two to three weeks,” the health unit advised. The health unit also said that siblings of those with the chickenpox should be allowed to attend school. n One of the oldest buildings in Napanee was about to be torn down. The frame structure located on Centre Street North had been formerly owned an operated as a grocery store by the Denison family. The store had been in the family for three generations. The property had been purchased some time earlier by Trudeau Motors. The company looked to establish a new car lot on the site.

35 Years Ago January 14, 1976

n The Lennox Generating Station along the lakeshore near Sandhurst began sending electricity into the Ontario power grid for the first time. The station’s first unit finally came on-line after five years of construction. The oil-fired plant was the first of its kind in the province. It would have the capacity to generate almost 2,300 megawatts of electrical power, enough to meet double the combined power needs of Kingston, Belleville, Ottawa and Hamilton. Three more of the plant’s four generating units still had to come on-line before the plant was operating at full capacity. n At the first council meeting of the new year, Napanee Mayor Lorne Smart warned that council had to hold spending to the very minimum in 1976. Smart made the remarks in light of broader efforts to curb inflation. The mayor also said council had to work hard to ensure the rail underpass on Centre Street proceeded as planned. “There is lots of work to be done and it is up to this council to show the interest and initiative to get things done,” he told council at the meeting.

Indoor soccer off-and-running in Napanee Local team brings home silver medal; club set to begin second session later this month By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER APANEE'S indoor soccer program captured its first medal over the holiday break as the Under-10 rep team took home silver at a tournament at Queen’s University. Heading into the tournament many of Napanee United’s members hadn’t played together in a real game. They managed to come together quickly and advance to the finals by virtue of the best goals against average. With a shot at gold they were overpowered by the Pegasus squad out of Gananoque. Though they had to settle for runner up, it was still a good start for the very young indoor soccer program. Playing in the renovated old hockey arena on York Street, the program has just about wrapped up its first session. “We ended up with about 105 youths and we have four mens’ teams and two ladies’ teams,” said Ron Yeomans of Soccer

After striking a deal with the Lennox and Addington Agricultural Society to rent the arena, the club then quickly began converting the hard floor to a rubberized surface. Through a lot of hustle and determination they were able to launch the league in just a few short weeks. They are also currently working on installing heat into the building at field level, which will certainly be appreciated by parent spectators. Registration for the second session, which runs until April, will be held this Saturday and Jan. 22 at the arena from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Games are played once a week at a cost of $100 for youths and $75 for adults. The club hopes the indoor program will serve as a nice warm-up for the outdoor season which saw about 600 kids take part in last year. By playing throughout the year they hope they will be able to stay competitive with Kingston and Belleville’s clubs, which also have indoor facilities.

Council sets rebranding strategy into motion Municipality engages Kingston-based consultant to upgrade town’s corporate image By Dominik Wisniewski BEAVER STAFF WRITER Greater Napanee council has selected the company that will update the town’s image in the months to come. Following a detailed Request For Proposal process for the branding and graphic design job, the town’s Core Area Advisory Committee received five proposals. On Tuesday night, council approved a staff recommendation

to award the contract to Small World Marketing Group, a Kingston-based company. According to a report by CAAC Coordinator Lyndsay Tee, the winning proposal provides the town with a ‘menu’ of options, at a cost of about $15,200 when compared to the services quoted by the other companies. The SWMG budget presented was just over $21,000 in total, but Tee pointed out that it included some extras. “After a brief telephone conversation with the co-owner Vanessa

Pizzinato, she explained that the budget outline presented in the proposal was a ‘menu’ of options which clients are able to accept and decline based on their projects goals,” Tee said. “That being said, when various extras were removed from the budget breakdown, the price became comparable to the other proposals making them a more viable option.” SWMG will create and present three brand concepts, allowing the committee to choose the final brand, Tee added. “Weekly reports will be pre-

pared throughout the process which will be time-stamped and uploaded to an online work area where the progress can be easily tracked and monitored,” she said. “The wide list of comparable references and their professional manner provide confidence and assurance that they will complete the job both on-time and professionally, working until the Town of Greater Napanee is completely satisfied with the final product.” Proposals were also received from Paula Brooks and Christine Peets ($8,475.25); TD Graham &

Associates – Marketing Communications ($10,735.20); BmDodo Strategic Design ($11,526.18); and Marketing Magnitude ($14,750.14). The CAAC secured a $7,000 grant from the Prince Edward and Lennox and Addington Community Futures Development Corporation for the project. In evaluating each proposal, a ranking system was used by Tee which looked at cost, comparable reference, research/data collection, professional appeal, focus and an interview.

town’s industrial park. During Tuesday’s regular session of council, a motion advising staff to notify property owners along the Goodyear Road park was passed. According to Chief Administrative Officer Raymond Callery, a

Ward 3 Councillor Marg Isbester said that, by approving a sign for a specific individual, the municipality would be “opening up a can of worms.” “We have other signs out there, will we have other developers wanting to do exactly the same thing?” she asked. In response, Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said the request should have been made through a minor variance application. “We have sign bylaws

and ‘for sale’ signs are even covered underneath our sign bylaws,” he told council. “We are trying to encourage development in that area, we’re trying to encourage new business to build there, and we’re trying to encourage people to buy industrial land and create jobs.” But, Schermerhorn said he did not like limiting this decision to one persons request. Pointing out that he has no problem with the industrial area promoting

itself, much like the downtown has, Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas said it should be done in a professional manner. “I would make a motion that the park should have a sign professionally done,” he said. Isbester agreed, adding that a ‘collage’ of professional signs would be a better idea. A motion calling on staff to notify all industrial park property owners, about the possibility of cooperative signage at a cost to them, was passed.

Former Napanee curler coaches juniors to title Will Hamilton helps guide Ottawa-based rink to national tournament in Calgary By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER ILL Hamilton tried his hardest to qualify for curling’s Canadian Juniors as a teenager playing out of Napanee, but couldn’t get the right breaks. His dream of ever taking a team to Juniors seemed lost when he became too old to curl as a junior — that is, until he found his second calling as coach. After years of heartbreak, this past weekend the Napanee native finally earned a spot in the M&M Meats Canadian Juniors, coaching Ottawa’s Mathew Camm rink to victory. Though he still curls himself, watching from the sidelines has shown him a whole different side of the game. “It’s a completely mixed bag,” said Hamilton. “Not only do we talk about strategies and tactical objectives we want to accomplish in a game, but it’s also about mental training, nutritional train-

ing and physical training.” When he was first learning the game Hamilton was coached by Andy Palmer of the Napanee and District Curling Club. Hamilton, who now lives in Ottawa, still maintains contact with members of his old curling club. This past November he was back in Napanee to compete in the NDCC’s Men’s Open Bonspiel. He says after calling his parents to tell them he qualified for the juniors this weekend, Palmer was his second phone call. While he is a strong curler himself, Hamilton seemed to pick up just as many coaching tips as he did curling ones. “It’s like making fine tweaks,” Hamilton says of coaching. “Instead of curling 90 per cent, they can curl 95 per cent.” His team certainly appears good at following direction. Last year they came painstakingly close to qualifying for the national championship, losing to eventual Canadian champion Jake Walker in the Ontario qualifier. This year it’s been a different story. “We’ve won a shade under $20,000 in cash,” Hamilton says of his rink. “We’re the only junior team to ever qualify for the Canada Cup, which is for

the top 10 teams in Canada. We’ve played a few events on the World Curling Tour, we’ve won the Ontario Curling Tour Men’s Championship earlier this year. We’re the No. 1 ranked team in the Ontario Junior Tour.” Though he is currently focused on this year’s Juniors, which take place in Calgary on Jan. 29, his mind has wandered a bit to 2012 when it will be held in his hometown. “As a coach I could be there in my own hometown,” said Hamilton. “That would be an excellent opportunity.” If he is going to coach Ontario’s entry it will be with a much different look than this years as only his second David Mathers will be young enough to enter. He says he wants nothing more than to be able to provide some local content to 2012’s event. As for this year he still figures to have a big cheering section in Calgary. That’s because several members of the NDCC will make the trip as they plan to pick up some hosting tips from this year’s host city. With a little luck he may be able to not only represent his town next year, but do so as coach of the reining champion.

‘Lazy’ effort dooms Raiders in loss 4-3 to Pirates Napanee squanders two-goal lead By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS second-period collapse by the Napanee Raiders spoiled a perfect chance at a homeand-away sweep of Picton Tuesday night, instead resulting in a 4-3 loss. The Raiders appeared to be sailing halfway through the first after Adam Shulist and Peter Roy gave them an early 2-0 lead. “We felt up until the 10 minute mark of the first period, things were going ok,” said Raiders head coach Mike Casselman. “Once (Picton) called a time out (directly after the second goal) we got lazy. It was everybody.” The idea to call a time out by Pirates’ head coach Ryan Woodward would prove to be genius as Ryan Sizer would cut the lead in half just seconds after it. That would be the start

would double it early in the third. Napanee’s Colin Doelman would bang home a lose puck with five seconds left, but it was too little too late. Heading into Tuesday’s game the Raiders were soaring high after an improbable 5-3 win in Picton on Thursday. “I’ve played this game since I

was six years old, and I don’t want to say I’ve seen everything, but I don’t think I’ll ever see anything like that again,” Casselman said of Thursday’s miraculous comeback. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Down a goal with less two minutes on the clock, Napanee was also down a man. That didn’t matter as

Chris Doyle and Paul Fortin scored shorthanded goals less than a minute apart to take the lead. For Doyle it was his first goal in 29 games with the Raiders and couldn’t have come at a better time. As if that wasn’t enough, David Cozzi managed to break past the defence and score short handed with 12 seconds left to ice a 5-3 victory. Roy had scored twice earlier in the game to help set up the thrilling come back. Despite the split the Raiders still find themselves with a two-point cushion over second place Amherstview and three ahead of Port Hope. The Raiders got some help over the weekend as Picton defeated the Jets 41 on Sunday and Campbellford downed Port Hope 3-2 on Saturday. Tuesday’s game marked the 30th of the season for Napanee, meaning they have to try and hold onto the top spot for 10 more games before playoffs begin. “(We need to) preach consistency,” Casselman says of what his team needs to do down the stretch. “I

was sitting with (assistant coaches) Keith (George) and Jordan (Wall) tonight and we kind of said it was very sporadic. One line would have a good shift and then go back and be complacent.” The coach also announced he plans to shake up the power play line, which he called ‘awful’ and ‘embarrassing.’ Tuesday night they were 0-6 on the man advantage, while Thursday they were 2-8. Overall they’ve scored 28 times with an extra man, fewest in the league. The Raiders can do themselves a huge favour by getting hot this week as they face Port Hope Saturday and Amherstview Sunday, both on the road. They’ll then return home Tuesday to host Port Hope. Both Sunday and Tuesday’s game start at 7:30 p.m. Raider notes….Napanee welcomed back their second-best scorer Adam Ruffolo to the line up Tuesday night. He’d been out with an upper body injury since Dec. 14….also suiting up for the game was Napanee’s Tyler Brooks, who played his first game of the season with the Raiders.

New additions spark perfect weekend for Storm Club picks up three victories By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER After a few weeks of controversy off the ice and some issues within the locker room, the Deseronto Storm did something that cures all team problems: win. They opened the weekend at home with a huge 70 victory over Vaughan and then hit the road for 5-4 and 3-2 wins over Toronto and Jamestown on Saturday and Sunday. “It pumped up our confidence,” Storm forward John Sweet said of the shutout victory. “Especially coming into a three game weekend.” Deseronto finished off the perfect weekend by overcoming a 2-0 deficit to

down Jamestown 3-2. Ryan Brant had a pair of goals while Sweet had one as the Storm picked up their first franchise victory on U.S. soil. Dan Corrigan made 52 saves for the win. After the game several U.S. college scouts spoke with some of the Storm players. Saturday night Sweet recorded a hat trick and an assist while Todd Munden and Dever scored once in a 5-4 victory in Toronto. Pavlo Stepanenko picked up the win. Before the weekend the Storm added Cody Stapley to the roster and he debuted in a big way on Friday, scoring twice and picking up an assist. Another recent roster addition paid off as well as Travis Gurr picked up a goal and an assist. A major part of last year's championship team, the Deseronto native was playing in his second game this season. The Storm were in need of some bodies as five players continue to serve their

suspensions stemming from the Russian anthem silent protest incident on Dec. 19. Sweet, Ryan McConnell, Danny Smith and Tyler Dever also added goals while Pavlo Stepanenko recorded the shutout, making 19 saves. Returning to the line up and adding an assist was Andrew Bobas. After holding a one on one meeting with head coach Andrew Clark, Bobas ironed out some issues after some reports had emerged he was suspended from the team which were erroneous. With Bobas back and the players serving their suspensions without issue, it appears the team has put the issue behind them and are back to focusing on hockey. The three victories put the Storm one shy of even at 14-15 on the year. They also leapfrogged Toronto in the standings and now sit two points ahead in fifth in the South Division with 28

New ice for new year at NDCC Senior bonspiel a hit By Sandy Eastlake ON THE BUTTON y now all members should have ‘limbered up’ after the holidays. I wonder how many of you noticed the fresh look of the ice. Thanks to Frank Dunham and Don Currier a thorough cleaning was conducted over the holidays. This involves closely watching gauges while the ice melts, sweeping up all the debris, resurfacing the sheets with new floods to be able to continue with normal shaving and pebbling. This took a lot of hours over the holiday season and we are grateful for all your hard work ensuring us the best ice possible to curl on. The Senior Men’s Bonspiel held last Saturday was another success thanks to Walter Genereux and his committee of Hugh Sharpe with drawmasters Steve Eastlake and John Deman. Tony Bush’s winning team thanked all the ladies for their many hours of cooking although he did comment that the smells from the kitchen would have been hard to take on a empty stomach but thankfully he was fed all day long so did not have to worry. The day started with morning goodies by Shirley Bush, followed by a delicious lunch by Marilyn Cole with helpers Doug and Joyce Meredith, Jane Wittish, Lorraine Wilson, Roger Cole. Elizabeth Vandenberg and helpers Sue Sharpe, Joan Reynolds, Diane Davie, Barb Graham, June Hicks and Liz Goldie served a scrumptious supper. The second place winner Ian Munro continued with thanks to Walter and the bar staff of Lia Dufour, Jo Sutton, Brian Woodcock, Paul McDonald, Phil Wilson, Karen Brant.

The two game high winner Ed File thanked Frank and Don with helpers Hugh Sharpe, Steve Eastlake, Brian Chadwick for great fast ice. Walter took the mike back and asked for a big round of applause to his sponsors Quinn’s Meats and Briar Fox G&CC. While the Seniors was being held at our club the team of Scott Dickson, Kevin MacLean, Daryl Latimer, Chris McTaggard curled in the OCA Fairfield Inn & Suites (Marriott) at the Campbellford Curling Club. Although they had two very close games they did not make it to the winner circle. However, also at Campbellford, our ladies team of Sheryl French, Gayle Johnson, Marcia Difazio, Karen Mills won the OCA Best Western Challenge besting the Mary Stewart Ross RKCC team in the finals and are proceeding to the Provincials being held at the Prince Edward Curling Club Jan. 21-23. Congratulations ladies and good curling in Picton. Our other team of Louise VanHeighten, Jane Pearson, Cindy Woodcock, Lana Latimer had two tough games and also had a lot of fun. The refresher clinic last Sunday attended by a dozen members was well run thanks to Beau Maracle and Scott Chadwick (ended up helping by being in the club – thanks Scott). Thanks also to Andy Palmer for giving his Sunday to train some new club skips. The annual Ladies Club Funspiel is next on Sunday so if you did not sign up but now are free, call Debbie Currier at 3889228. The Annual Mixed Bonspiel Jan. 28-30 is getting closer and I have heard there will be a lot of Romans, statesmen and gladiators attending; sounds like great fun!

Accustomed to playing on the Storm’s top line, Todd Munden (left) and John Sweet (right) will be pitted against each other at Saturday’s All-Star Game. team. “Last year (Team World) actually ended up winning on a penalty shot late in the game,” said Munden. "You could see the Canadian boys getting frustrated when there's a lot of Russian and European guys that have nice moves and prefer the skill kind of game.” Munden, who serves as captain of the Storm, is fifth on the team with 23 points with five goals and 18 assists. Though they've played their entire GMHL career as teammates, once the puck drops all that is forgotten in favour of friendly competition. Sweet, who plays forward, may just have to find a way past Munden on defense. “It's going to be interesting but I'll treat him like any other team I treat,” Sweet says with a

smile. “I want to go in and I want to win that game.” According to Munden, the feeling is mutual. “I played here with him for four years now so I

know his moves,” said Munden. “I know what he's going to try and do on me so it'll give me a little advantage there.”

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AIDAN McFARLAND Aidan McFarland is a member of the Minor Peewee Quinte Red Devils. While his team was competing at the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa earlier this month, the Napanee native won the Breakway Shutout Challenge, scoring on four of six shots and then winning it in the second round.
