Auction proceeds benefit community organizations Vintners giving focuses on health and education programs FOR DISTINCTIVE P RO PE RT I E S ‌Proceeds from the annual Auction Napa Valley go to a variety of worthy causes, particularly initiatives to support health and education. In March, for example, the Napa Valley Vintners, which hosts the annual fundraising auction, gave $1.8 million in grants from Auction Napa Valley proceeds to nine local nonprofits that help children. The organizations provide an array of services that foster academic achievement, provide teacher training, support mentoring and relationship building, offer parental education and inspire healthy behaviors and leadership development for youth. The money “builds on the investments we’ve made recently to ensure a positive future for the youth of Napa County,” said David Duncan, chair of the NVV’s Board of Directors and president and CEO of Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars. “We’re proud of our commitment to use Auction Napa Valley proceeds to help local children reach their full potential.” The grants follow other recent investments by the NVV toward classroom-based programs and youth development, including: $2 million for construction of a new Boys & Girls Club and Community Center in American Canyon; $2 million for construction of a new Boys & Girls Club facility in Calistoga; and an additional $1 million for the NVV’s Early Learning Initiative established last year to ensure that every child in Napa County enters kindergarten ready to learn. “The NVV’s strategic focus of funding youth-based programs for vulnerable populations through Auction Napa Valley proceeds is transformative for Napa County,” said Alissa Gentille, executive director of On the Move. “In providing critical opportunities for youth who are facing barriers of many sorts, the social return on investment in our children not only improves the quality of life for an individual 14 — Distinctive Properties

child’s lifespan, but also strengthens the fabric of our community as a whole.” In January, the Vintners granted $5.7 million from Auction Napa Valley proceeds to 18 nonprofits under the community health umbrella. The organizations

receiving money provide services in the areas of healthcare, emotional health, family support services and senior support services. According to a report released last year, NVV funding through its Auction Napa Valley proceeds helps more than 90,000 clients of Napa

County nonprofits, which make it possible for every child in the county to have access to affordable health insurance and one in six local residents to receive their primary healthcare through Clinic Ole. Auction giving to the community since 1981 now totals more than $145 million. “The inter-connected, comprehensive resources made possible by the Napa Valley Vintners help create a stronger, healthier community for all of us,” said Howard Himes, director of Health and Human Services for Napa County. “Through its thoughtful, strategic process of grant giving, the Napa Valley Vintners has created a model for how one community can come together to form a firm foundation of neighbors helping neighbors.” In 2014, the Vintners also used $10 million in auction proceeds to seed a relief fund for the August earthquake that inflicted heavy damage on parts of southern Napa County. Auction Napa Valley returns Wine lovers, collectors gather for a good cause F O R D I S T I N C T I V E P RO PE RT I E S ‌The 35th annual Auction Napa Valley returns June 6, capping nearly a week of events that will bring thousands of wine lovers and collectors to wine country. Founded in 1981 under the vision of Robert and Margrit Mondavi to raise funds for local hospitals, Auction Napa Valley has grown into a four-day-long celebration of Napa Valley’s finest, and has given more than $145 million to community health and children’s education nonprofits. The event, sponsored by the Napa Valley Vintners, is the country’s first and most celebrated

charity wine auction. It attracts visitors from around the world not only for the its fine wines, but for the food prepared by culinary superstars, the event’s spectacular setting and the hospitality of the hundreds of vintners who host this event — and donate the one-of-akind auction lots offered over the course of the weekend. Last year’s event broke the previous record for fundraising, bringing in $18.7 million. The previous record, set in 2013, was $13.89 million. Last year’s Barrel Auction, an event held the day before the main

auction, also set a record of $1.7 million, with four bidders taking home five-case lots for bids in excess of $50,000. Top lot was Brand Napa Valley at $83,050; followed by Shafer Vineyards, $55,200; Continuum Estate, $52,750; and Gargiulo Vineyards, $51,400. The newer web-based E-Auction also set a record of its own, bringing in $490,000 from online bidders. Collectively, the money raised went to a variety of good causes in the valley, including a $10 million gift from the Vintners to be the June 2015 – 19


seed money of a relief fund after the August earthquake that heavily damaged parts of southern Napa County. Other recipients of NVV grants from Auction funds include The Vine Trail bike path project, which has received $2.5 million, the Boys and Girls Clubs in American Canyon and Calistoga, which received $4 million to build new clubhouses in those cities, and an early learning initiative for Napa County schools to boost pre-kindergarten literacy programs. “We are grateful to our bidders, vintners and community volunteers who make it possible for the NVV to contribute to many organizations doing good work in our community,” said Linda Reiff, president and CEO of the Napa Valley Vintners. This year’s event is being chaired by Opus One. This team includes David Pearson, Robert Fowles, Michael Salacci, Laurent DeLaussas, Robert Roux and Christopher Barefoot. About 850 people are expected for Saturday’s auction at Meadowood in St. Helena. Craig and Kathryn Hall of HALL winery are the hosts for the Friday Barrel Auction and Marketplace. The rolling hillsides covered in vines and the world quality wines they produce have lured more than a few to migrate to the Napa Valley to pursue their viticulture dream or reconnect with a rural sense from their past. Connecting with the agricultural history of the area can take the simple form of making wine in your garage to actually purchasing your own home with a producing vineyard. Today’s real estate market offers in excess of 30 opportunities where you will find existing vineyard or plantable land as an additional component to the home purchase. Many of the valley’s successful wineries began in a local garage or on a small piece of acreage, later obtaining a retail license and since grown into a known local brand. A great first step to entering the wine making community would be to join the Home Winemakers Association and attend this year’s Home Winemakers Classic tasting on July 18th. There you can mingle and visit with the entrants who have taken their first step to follow their viticulture path and are open to sharing their experiences with newcomers. If, after gaining some basic knowledge, you’re still smitten with the idea of producing a bottle of wine from your own land, there are several different levels of engagement to choose from that each require investigation, education and preparation before you pull the cork. In looking at homes with a vineyard or vineyard potential, you will want to be clear about the balance of your investment between the actual home itself and the amount of vineyard that is included or can be created. A “landscape vineyard” of an acre or two can add greatly to the setting and privacy but will likely yield no more than fine gift wine for friends and family. It is critical to know how much farming activity you can support financially, how much time you expect to contribute to the effort and to have a clearly defined goal of what you want to create. The choice of how to manage your own vineyard will depend on the amount of your personal involvement and how much investment resource you have available for the project. The least complex and most common method of vineyard ownership is to obtain a “grape purchase contract” with a local winery which agrees to buy your crop on an annual basis (often year to year or a renewing 3 years). An example might be two acre vineyard producing 4 tons per acre would yield a gross of $40,000 per

year at $5,000 per ton. In order to secure a contract for your grapes the winery will look carefully at the varietal, the quality of the fruit, quality of farming and proximity to the winery.

As owner you pay for all the farming costs by employing a vineyard management company who maintains the vines and delivers the grapes to the winery at harvest. The annual management cost can be $8,000 to $10,000 per acre on producing vines under 5 acres and drop to $5,000 to $6,000 as the size of the vineyard moves above 20 acres. The location of the property, the steepness of the terrain and the degree of farming detail can all affect the management cost to delivering a ready crop at harvest. A second and more complex option is to use your grapes to make your own estate wine. In this situation many home vineyard owners prefer to employ the services of a “custom crush” winery facility of which there are many in the valley. In this case, instead of delivering the grapes to a contracted winery you have your grapes delivered to the “custom crush” winery facility. These wineries offer every service needed from receipt of the crop at crush to the production a finished bottles of wine labeled and boxed. Your personal goal will dictate whether you are looking for a property that will provide economic return as a “grape grower” by selling your grapes or if you want your own estate bottled label. When one acre of grapes can produce up to 200 cases of wine there is the challenge of creating a market to buy your wine one year to the next. The costs and production factors are part of what separates the hobby or gentleman’s vineyard from those that are of a size to be economically viable (5 acres and up). A planted vineyard or plantable land adds value to the home site because it enhances the estate setting and provides some additional revenue generating opportunities. The economic factors alone don’t often compete with the passion and personal enjoyment of connecting with nature through the vineyards and producing a bottle of wine of your own creation. Visitors that come to the Valley during Auction Napa Valley and throughout the year often depart with the commitment that one day they return and stake their claim by becoming a permanent resident of these unique lands.
