PGA TOUR

FINDING THE WINNER’S CIRCLE Brendan Steele, Phil Mickelson return to Safeway Open M A RT Y J A M E S m j ame s@ n ap anews.c om To get your first win on the PGA Tour is very big, said Brendan Steele. The second one, he said, can be even tougher. “I definitely found that to be the case,” Steele said Tuesday, during media day for the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa. “Getting your second win is always really nice out here.” Steele, who is from Idyllwild, Calif. (Riverside County), went to work on the back nine of the North Course in Steele the final round, making birdies on the last three holes and shooting a 7-under-par 65 to win the Safeway Open, the first event of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season. It was the second victory of Steele’s career, as he completed the week at 18-under 270 and won $1,080,000. He beat Patton Kizzire by one shot and edged out four other players – Paul Casey, Michael Kim, Scott Piercy, Johnson Wagner – by two strokes. Steele came back from four shots off the lead to start the day. It was his first win in 141 starts on the PGA Tour dating to his rookie season in 2011. Rainy weather caused the final round to be delayed two hours. “It was a pretty wild week,” he said. “I had a ton of fun winning for the first time in my home state, which was pretty cool. It was really nice to start the season off that way. Three birdies to finish always feels good to win the tournament instead of having somebody else give it to you.” 14 — Distinctive Properties

About the Safeway Open Daily tickets to the Safeway Open, a PGA Tour event Oct. 2-8 at Silverado Resort and Spa, are on sale and include admission to the Safeway Open Concert Series, as well as the 27,000-square foot Safeway Food and Wine Pavilion and on-site food, wine, beer and spirits venues. The event will feature a concert series with three consecutive nights of music after golf, featuring Weezer, Goo Goo Dolls, and Gavin DeGraw. For more information on the Safeway Open and to purchase tickets, visit safewayopen.com. For hospitality or sponsorship information, visit safewayopen.com.

Steele will return to Napa as the defending champion and will play in the Safeway Open, Oct. 2-8 at Silverado. There will be 144 players in the field – including Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, the winner of five majors, a World Golf Hall of Fame member – and the tournament, presented by Chevron, carries a $6 million purse. The Safeway Open is the season-opening event on the PGA Tour’s 2017-18 wraparound schedule. Also in the field: ■ John Daly, a two-time major champion, and Jamie Sadlowski, who has twice won the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, have both accepted sponsor invitations to play. ■ Maverick McNealy, a former Stanford star and the 2017 winner of the Ben Hogan Award, will make his professional debut in the event. McNealy accepted a sponsor’s invitation to play. “There is a word of mouth on the tour, that this is a great tournament,” said Johnny Miller, the tournament host and one of Silverado’s owners. “It’s just a great place. I always say, that the guys play where their wives want them to pretty much. It is a very relaxing week for the tour players.” The week begins with the Johnny Miller Pro-Am and

practice rounds on Oct. 2. There will be practice rounds on Oct. 3. The official Safeway Open Pro-Am is on Oct. 4. The tournament’s first round is on Oct. 5, with players starting from the first and 10th tees beginning at 7:20 a.m. Golf Channel will televise all four rounds. Steele has had a big season. He is 25th among PGA To u r Fe d E x C u p l e a d e r s ($2,858,620). He has had four Top-10 and 10 Top-25 finishes. He tied for sixth at the SBS Tournament of Champions, CareerBuilder Challenge, and the Players Championship. He tied for 13th at the U.S. Open and tied for 14th at the Travelers Championship. By winning the Safeway Open, he got into the Masters, where he tied for 27th. Steele is 57th in the Official World Golf Ranking. The win here also gave Steele exempt status through the 201819 season. He tied for fifth in driving accuracy, tied for 21st for greens hit in regulation, and tied for first in sand saves at the Safeway Open last year. Steele is entered in this week’s Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. It’s the second event in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs. “You’ve got really good players and then you’ve got guys who when they’re at the top of their games, they’re just really hard to beat,” said Steele.

of the FedExCup schedule. Silverado was once the site of the PGA Tour’s national qualifying school. The Northern California Open was also played here. “A lot of the legends have played a lot of golf here at Silverado,” said Jeff Sanders, executive tournament director of the Safeway Open. “We’re very fortunate to follow in their footsteps Mickelson here at the Safeway Open.” The winner’s circle at Silverado is led by Johnny Miller, who won Kaiser International Open Invitational titles here in 1974 and 1975. “It’s a very rare property with a nice, rich history,” said Miller, a World Golf Hall of Fame member.

LONG, RICH HISTORY OF TOURNAMENT GOLF This will be the fourth consecutive year of the PGA Tour at Silverado, which has a long history of having hosted professional tournament golf, dating to the late 1960s. The five-year agreement with Safeway as the title sponsor runs through 2020. The event is part

CHARITIES Last year’s event raised $1.8 million for charity. “That’s a priority for us,” said Sanders. “We can’t run a golf tournament, and run a great golf tournament, without having a nice outcome for the charities. We’ve got to make it bigger and we’ve got to make it better every single year.”

MICKELSON RETURNING TO SILVERADO Phil Mickelson, the winner of 42 PGA Tour events, has committed to play in the Safeway Open for the second year a row. He tied for eighth place here last year after shooting 14-underpar on the North Course. Mickelson, who drew large crowds, had rounds of 69, 69, 69 and 67. He earned $162,000. “It says a lot about Phil Mickelson,” said Sanders. “Phil is just an amazing player,” said Miller. “What a talent, just an amazing talent. A very confident person – period. Amazingly confident.”

ou love entertaining and treating guests to delectable dishes and fun times. Unfor tunately, your kitchen layout, appliances and even the faucet are so downright unappealing that the thought of planning and preparing a party menu is equally unpleasant. What do you do when you’re built to entertain, but your kitchen is not? Renovate! REASON TO RENOVATE The kitchen is a favorite room to remodel, and a minor kitchen refresh can return more than 80 percent of your investment at the time of resale, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report. But ROI isn’t the top reason people renovate kitchens. According to the 2017 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, most people who remodel their kitchen do so because they just can’t stand it anymore. So, if you love playing host but don’t like the kitchen that stands in the way of your entertaining, revamping the room is the perfect way to make it more party-friendly. RENOVATING FOR ENTERTAINMENT Here are five upgrades that can help make your kitchen the perfect platform for entertaining: 1. Give yourself some space. If you’ve decided to go all in for your kitchen renovation, and have an older home with a closed-off kitchen, consider opening the space to the home’s main living area. If your home already has an open floor plan, consider ways to tie the kitchen more intimately to the living area, such as continuing one style of flooring through both rooms, or repeating an accent

color in the kitchen and adjacent common space. 2. Work smarter with a new faucet. The sink is a key point in the workflow triangle for any kitchen, and the faucet should take center stage in this performance. A contemporary faucet with taskdriven spray patterns is a must for entertaining, but wouldn’t an extra pair of hands also be great to have with the flurry of pre-party activities? An easy and quick solution is a hands-free faucet, such as the American Standard Beale kitchen faucet with Selectronic technology, which allows you to turn water on or off without the need to touch the faucet. This touchless technology makes food prep easier, while also helping to prevent cross-contamination of foods. Taking hands-free technology one step further, the addition of a sleek, European-styled GROHE kitchen faucet with Foot Control allows you to control the flow of water with a tap of your toe at the base of the sink cabinet. Now it will be super simple to

fill a big pot or rinse off a large skillet, using both hands to hold it securely while turning on the water at the same time. 3 . Up g r a d e a p p l i a n c e s . Depending on your budget, you can find appliances to help with virtually every aspect of entertaining, from dishwashers that entirely eliminate the need to pre-rinse, to refrigerators that help compile your grocery list. Even on a modest budget, you can improve on your current appliances, especially if they are older and less energy efficient. Double stoves are great for cooking a lot of food for large groups of guests, warming drawers keep food warm until ready to serve, and beverage drawers ensure you’ll always have enough refreshments for everyone. 4. Choose cleaning-friendly surfaces. Did you ever wonder why stainless steel sinks continue to be a popular choice in kitchens, regardless of the room’s decor? It’s because stainless steel sinks not only look good, they also retain their beauty longer by resisting

stains and scratches. Plus, drop-in and undermount stainless steel sinks from American Standard offer both single and double bowl options for simplifying kitchen tasks. Picking dirt and germ-busting surfaces like stainless steel, stone countertops, ceramic tile, etc., can help make it easier to keep your kitchen clean, leaving you more time for entertaining. 5. Create an island paradise. The standalone island has become a must-have for entertainment-minded homeowners. An island can serve multiple purposes when throwing a party, from providing extra workspace or hosting a second sink, to giving guests a seat closer to the action. You can even choose a multi-level island that will allow you to interact with guests while concealing work areas and sinks from view. If your kitchen has been holding you back from blossoming into the host of your dreams, these easy upgrades can help the room better match your personality and entertainment needs. beautiful, sunny day is one of the best parts of the season and when you have one, you simply have to be outside. When you step outdoors, where do you go? To the park? The lake? A friend’s home? How often do you stay home and enjoy a beautiful day in your own outdoor space? If your answer is not often or never, it’s time to create your own home field advantage. With just a few simple improvements you can make even the smallest outdoor space feel comfortable and welcoming to you and your guests. Start with these five projects and you’ll 18 — Distinctive Properties

make your own yard the place to be when the weather turns beautiful. — Replace the cement with a raised deck. That old cement patio or walkway in your backyard may be unsightly and uninviting, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can make that space much more appealing by replacing it with a raised cedar deck. Easy to build and affordable as well, installing a raised cedar deck to your outdoor space makes the entire area more inviting without taking up any additional space. Cedar is also naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects, and it is cool underfoot, making it the perfect decking solution for your newly improved outdoor living space. — Light smart. Your current outdoor space may have only a single light or it may have no light at all, making it impossible to use at night. To make the space more welcoming, add string lights or

uplighting to your outdoor area. These lights are available in a wide array of styles to match your personality and they take up very little space, allowing you to create the perfect—well lit—environment you’re looking for. — Focus on furniture. If finding the right furniture to fit your space has been difficult, consider making your own instead. Building a customized bench or sectional from Western Red Cedar is easier than you think and it allows you to build your furniture to meet the design requirements of your space. Plus, Western Red Cedar is pitch and resin free so it accepts and holds a wide range of finishes to match your style choice. You can even add built-in storage to your bench or furniture design for more space-saving solutions. To find building plans for this and other Western Red Cedar projects, visit www.realcedar.com.

— Place a plant or two. The right plant could provide just the pop of color your outdoor space needs. Herb gardens, hostas, even a pot of flowers all up the scenic appeal of your outdoor area. If space is a concern and you have a pergola structure, hanging plant baskets is a great option, so you can enjoy their beauty from above. — Play a zone strategy. When space is at a premium, you need to utilize every inch. To do this, segment your outdoor space into defined zones such as cooking, relaxing and eating areas. You can then further define these zones by adding the perfect finishing touches to each like a barbecue enclosure for your cooking area and a pergola over your dining table. Each of these DIY projects is a worthy addition to your outdoor space and will make it the area you can’t wait to enjoy every time you step outside.

Enjoy the latest trend in swimming pools

I

t was supposed to be a community swimming pool, but many people stayed away because they couldn’t tolerate the biting, nose-curdling odor of chlorine. Others experienced breathing and skin problems. So the Evergreen Commons senior center in Holland, Michigan, converted its 65,000-gallon chlorine pool into a saltwater pool. People who had stayed away are now coming back, getting exercise and therapy, while socializing with others. The senior center is hardly alone. Across the country, traditional chlorine pools are being converted into saltwater pools, sometimes called saline pools. Sw i m m e r s n o t i c e d t h e

difference right away after the switch, making their pool experience much more enjoyable. The new system also meant softer water without harsh chemicals that sometimes required a shower to wash off. Homeowners and pool managers have many motivations for converting pools from chlorine to salt, including: — Simplified, more convenient maintenance. Saltwater pool owners don’t have to buy, transport, store and handle hazardous chlorine chemicals. This saves time and money. — Water that’s gentle on skin, eyes, nose and hair. Saltwater pools have approximately one-tenth the salinity of ocean water and about one-third the salinity of human tears, with no unpleasant chlorine smell. — A more environmentally

friendly approach. Routine pool maintenance doesn’t involve the handling and storage of manufactured chlorine and lessens the need for other potentially hazardous chemicals. How do they work? Saltwater pools use a generator to convert the salt into mild chlorine that keeps the pool free of harmful bacteria. This chlorine is added to the water at a constant rate, displacing the bad smell and burning irritation we normally associate with chlorine and maintaining the right amount. Once the chlorine sanitizes the pool it converts back to salt. The process continues, over and over again, conserving the salt and keeping sanitizer levels balanced. The technology for a saltwater pool was first developed in Australia in the 1960s and today more than 80 percent of all pools Down

Under use this system. In the United States, saltwater pools first began to see use in the 1980s and have grown exponentially in popularity. According to data published in Pool & Spa News, today there are more than 1.4 million saltwater pools in operation nationwide and an estimated 75 percent of all new in-ground pools are saltwater, compared with only 15 percent in 2002. The other good news for homeowners and pool managers is that pool salt is far cheaper than traditional chlorine. This is a big reason why so many hotels and water parks in the United States have already made the switch. The initial construction and installation of an electrolytic converter is very small and easily made up in maintenance savings. Even converting an existing chlorine pool to saltwater pool can pay off quickly.

Enhancing your home’s safety with fire extinguishers

Y

ou check your alarms regularly and practice your family escape plan—but are you overlooking an essential component of home safety? Having fire extinguishers—and knowing how to use them—is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. “In America, a fire starts in a residential home every 86 seconds—and the rapid protection offered by fire extinguishers can make the difference between minor or insignificant damage and greater tragedy,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety. “However, because many Americans have never activated a traditional fire extinguisher before, many do not understand the essential role that fire extinguishers play in a home safety plan, and lack the confidence and know-how to use them properly.” To help overcome this, follow these tips on fire extinguisher placement and usage to help ensure you and your family are properly prepared in case of emergency: COMPARE FEATURES When selecting a fire extinguisher, two of the most important features are size and intended use. Larger commercial fire extinguishers meant for public spaces may be too heavy or unwieldy for some family members. Select a home fire extinguisher that weighs 3 lbs. or less for easy handling. For home fire extinguishers, other features to look for include a metal valve and trigger, which offer the

durability of a commercial grade extinguisher, as well as an easy-toread color-coded gauge for accurate measurement. Spray times also vary by make and manufacturer, so select extinguishers that perform above the standard and feature longer spray times. Remember, a fire extinguisher that has been discharged is no longer effective, so consider rechargeable extinguishers which can be recharged by a certified professional if the unit is used. KEEP IT IN REACH If a fire breaks out in the living room but the extinguisher is elsewhere, you may not be able to access it before the fire grows beyond control. When seconds count, having an extinguisher nearby is crucial for rapid response. For this reason, place an extinguisher in each area of the home where a fire could potentially occur, including the kitchen, living room, each bedroom and the garage. In most cases, one extinguisher is likely not enough protection for an entire household. In addition, make sure that every responsible member of your household (including house sitters and babysitters) knows where each fire extinguisher is placed. The

Forward-thinking yard projects to tackle as the weather cools off this fall

T

he temperature may not have dropped just yet, but make no mistake, fall is coming. Soon enough, baseball will give way to football, green leaves will turn yellow and red and your lawn care routine will take on a whole new set of tasks. Fall lawn care isn’t the long marathon of the summer yard season, but it packs plenty of work into a few short months before the winter. You can make this lawn care blitz a little bit easier by applying the following tips. ■ Stimulate your lawn. While your grass may no longer need its weekly mowing in the fall, you can’t ignore it until spring. Look

for brown, tan or white patches on your lawn, as this can be a sign of mold growth. Apply a lawn fungicide to halt this growth and an organic fertilizer to stop its spread and support future root growth. ■ Blow those leaves away. Raking leaves can be a Herculean task, so simplify the process by investing in a lithium-ion blower. The Greenworks 60-volt Backpack Blower is a heavy-duty solution perfect for homeowners with a quarter to three-quarters of an acre to cover. And for yard-lovers that prefer a handheld blower, Greenworks has you covered there too! Both solutions are lightweight and reduce noise while eliminating emissions, and because they’re battery powered, you BPT

don’t have to bother with mixing gas and oil. ■ Seed and sod. If you do notice patches of dead grass in your yard—a common occurrence if fallen leaves have not been blown away—don’t wait until spring to address the issue. Over-seeding the area can rectify the problem if the spaces are small. If your lawn has significant portions that have died, it may be time to look into sodding options instead for more comprehensive coverage. ■ A fresh spray clean. A season’s worth of wind and rain can leave the sides of your home looking pretty dingy. Fall cleanup is the perfect time to give your home a reset by spraying down your siding, decks, and patios. Greenworks 2200 PSI Electric Pressure Washer is an environmentally friendly gas-alternative solution with five nozzles that allow you to

adjust the tool’s water pressure based on the task at hand. The pressure washer is also designed with Smart Response Technology to adjust motor RPMs as nozzles are changed, ensuring the perfect water flow for every job—and the on board LED display guides you to the best job for each nozzle, letting you clean your home in a smart, efficient way. ■ A hole in the ground supports future growth. Fall is arguably the best time of year to aerate your yard, allowing water, oxygen and fertilizer to more easily reach the root structure of your grass. Self-propelled aerators are relatively inexpensive, and you can also rent one if you plan to make this a once-a-year chore. Whatever you decide, tackling this chore now will allow your lawn to grow back thicker and fuller next year when it will be time to start thinking about spring lawn care once again.

The Truth About Solar CHRIS D. CRAIKER

A

recent poll showed that more and more Americans would choose solar energy for providing electrical power to their home if they could afford it. Currently 6% of the homes in America have solar, California has approximately 12%. The numbers appear to be increasing. If you don’t have a system now or if your system is old, should you jump on the band wagon? Is it the right choice for you? Not all homes or pocket books are can support a solar installation. Each house must be analyzed for shade, orientation and economic questions if a homeowner should even consider this. Here’s the truth about solar: All those panels, inverters and batteries will not make your house more energy efficient. They will create electricity that will heat, cool and light your house but reducing your carbon footprint takes more than an array of solar panels on your roof. It would be hard to find anyone that doesn’t want their utility bills reduced. Energy consumption by all our buildings account for over 40% of our national energy consumption and 22% of that is consumed by residential living, including the big three: heating, lighting and cooling. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the average residential electricity bill rose 20% between May 2007 and May 2017 across the US. It’s said that PG&E rates here in California typically increases by 3%-6% each year depending on which Tier. New energy requirements in the state of California are making new construction more energy efficient to reduce our carbon footprint, but for those of us with existing homes, even if only 10 years old, our energy consumption is still significant. More of us would like to reduce that by going to renewable energy such as solar or wind. But not everyone can have a 100-foot windmill in their backyard, although vertical turbines are in our future. In the meantime, what does it take to minimize our utility company grid use? Today most households need electricity in the late afternoon and evening as the sun goes down. During the roaming blackouts, the high demands came from businesses and homes with the AC or Heating running midafternoon. Collecting sunlight for 34 — Distinctive Properties

Submitted photo

Chris Craiker reads from “Your Solar House”.

conversion into electricity generally runs from early morning to mid-afternoon, depending on panel and roof orientation. For sun-less times one needs electricity storage such as batteries which have traditionally been very expensive. Two new battery systems are available for after hours or if your neighborhood grid goes down: Mercedes-Benz energy and Vivint Solar are going to go to toe with Tesla Powerwall. While battery prices, like solar panels, are dropping, they are still costly and payback uncertain. While many solar panels are warranted for 20 years and batteries are generally warranted between 2-5 years, technology, along with production costs, are changing rapidly. Within five years, your system will most likely be outdated and you will probably be contemplation an upgrade. Solar panels are becoming more efficient every day, currently converting about 28%on average of the properly oriented sunlight into electricity. That’s up from 16% just 10 years ago. New ones on the horizon with super inverters are predicted to convert up to 48% sun light to electricity but they are currently very costly.

As an example of new technology, Tesla has introduced Solar Roof with roof tiles that look like regular tile or asphalt roofing material. This is not new, with similar product introduced-and failed-in the 90’s. The Tesla cost is up to double a normal solar system and you need to cover the rest of the non-solar producing roof with their simulated material. Assuming a maximum required area of 35% Solar Roof tiles, compared to only 25% for conventional solar panels, you will have to install 65% of your roof with a similar looking but untested material that requires all new roof substrate installation and wiring. I’ll wait a few years before I consider that. For new construction, it may be worth the additional expense for bragging rights, but for me, give me a product as important as roofing and moisture protection with a successful track record. Whenever I get into a discussion about solar design, I refer to one of my favorite books: Your Solar House. Every state, county and microclimate in America has different energy requirements. Sun orientation is among the single most important initial design issues but many of us in existing homes do not have that option. What is common to all, even in existing homes, is creating a highly efficient exterior building skin to minimize heating, cooling and lighting needs. While lighting has become more and more efficient with new LED fixtures and various sensors, everyone can reduce their heating and cooling needs with more efficient furnaces and AC condensers, tankless water heaters or AC heat pump, improved ventilation and better ducting, increased insulation in the attics and under floor, replacing windows with highly efficient units, improved window shading, drapes and electronic controlled window coverings, better landscaping (yes, properly located vegetation can always help) and a simple energy audit to see where you are wasting energy. By analyzing your energy requirements and making reasonable modifications, you can reduce your carbon footprint, with or without a solar array. What I find most interesting about my research book is that Your Solar House is 70 years old, published in 1947. Sometimes what’s old is new again.
