Hello friends!
Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow isn’t glistening. It’s still a
beautiful sight; we’re all happy tonight, walking in a semi-winter wonderland! Despite the warm weather, the ho-ho-holidays are in full-force and we’re only one week away from Santa’s big day! If you’re still helping the elves wrap gifts and preparing for his jolly arrival, we have free Christmas prints available on the blog and templates in the NAPCP store!
With the holidays on the horizon, we’re getting one day closer to our 2016 NAPCP

In between the jingle and jangle, be sure to make your to-do list, check it twice and sign-up before it’s too late – just a little word of advice.
Other January hot topics include the 2016 January Image Competition (more

Lena is founder and CEO of Design Aglow, an industry-leading resource for products and templates created for the success of professional photographers! In her interview, Lena shares tips and tricks for in-person sales, as well as how to implement them immediately. Worth a listen for all members, the NAPCP blog has her full interview!

Tell us your story. How you started and how your photography, brand, and business transformed over the last couple of years? I was born into photography. My mother was a talented photographer which granted me the opportunity to follow her around. While photography was always in my life, I didn’t find my passion for it until I was 27. Those first years in the business, I had a great deal to learn as my knowledge of the technical aspect of photography was limited. The automatic setting on my camera was well used as I learned about aperture, ISO, shutter speed and all the other foreign terms. In 2010, after a great deal of study, experimenting and practice, I finally turned the dial to manual. This hard work and constant learning was the same for the

business aspect of creating my brand. My business and career as photographer was built from the ground up with a lot of hard work, dedication, long hours, and passion. I am honoured to say that this year I was named New Brunswick’s Young Entrepreneur of the year. You have a stunning gallery of winning images from NAPCP, as well as WPPI and PPOC. Can you tell us more about your vision for competition style images? After a few years of photography experience, I had established a name for myself in my community, but still had feelings of inadequacy. There was something lacking that made me feel less than the professional I wanted

to be. The idea of winning an award for my work put a value on my time and devotion. It, in my eyes, was proof that I had achieved the level of professionalism I had set out to achieve. In 2013 I entered my first competition in PPOC. All my images were accepted in the Atlantic Image Salon. This feat should have been viewed as a great achievement, but instead, left me feeling disappointed. I wanted to win. The experience made me even more determined, and I spent the whole year educating myself on creating great competition images. I reached out to a photographer I admired and had the style of work I was trying to achieve. When I asked for her assistance, she agreed to a online workshop! This is where my style was born. The hard work was rewarded with the title of Atlantic Photographer of the year in 2014 and 2015 as well as with ribbons in NAPCP and WPPI. As a photographer, my work is always subject to criticism, so self-doubt is ever present. However, I still feel like I get lucky every time I win. Your fine art photography is so unique. How does this process differ from your regular client work? Living in a small town makes it impossible to specialize in one particular style. My clientele are most willing to invest in the milestone events in their lives: graduations, weddings and newborns. While I love capturing these moments for my clients, it leaves me aching for more opportunity to photograph my favorite subject; children. Especially in fine art form. I love capturing the natural beauty and personality of each individual child. So what’s a girl to do? Mini sessions have been my solution. My clients love my mini sessions, they get professional photographs at a great deal, and I’m getting to shoot what I most love. It is a win-win for all.
The holidays are upon us, what are your secrets for staying organized and focused on the true spirit of the season? Unfortunately, organization is not one of my strongest suits, and an area where I continue to grow and learn. For me, keeping things simple, selling mostly digital products and having everything online helps me keep calm during this peek season. Christmas, for me, has always been about giving, not receiving. From the beginning of my career I started the Shoot to Feed fundraising campaign to collect

money for local children in need. Themed Mini Sessions are scheduled for family and children, with all session fees being used to purchase gifts and necessary items for those who need them. In the last 2 years, $10000 has been raised to purchase school supplies, boots, winter coats, toys, clothing, food and even a few beds for children in need. While it makes for a very hectic holiday season, it makes for a very memorable one each year. Life is an echo; what you send out comes back. Do good and good will come to you. Three Tips F O R G E T T I NG I N S P I R E D | BY J A M I E B A R D - D U B E
Inspiration is everywhere. Open your eyes, ears and heart to your surroundings and you will find it. As an artist my goal is to create images that evoke either style, storytelling or a connection. I live for the photos where I manage to capture all three. That is when I feel I’ve achieved my goal. Here is how I find my inspiration: 1- STYLE: I love watching television. Often, after watching a great series, I found myself inspired to create an image based off of what I have seen. For example, the series “Gotham”. I love the dark, gritty tone that the series creates. Keep Out was inspired by my interpretation of the series Gotham. 2- STORYTELLING: I often find myself perusing the internet for old paintings. There is so much storytelling, lighting and posing to be found in a great work of art. I love the challenge of depicting the same in a single photo shot. The Governess’ Debut was inspired by an old painting. 3- CONNECTION: Love is life. It surrounds us every day. Love can be witnessed in the way a mother looks at her children; in a grandparents proud eyes, in the passing glance of lovers. The Album was inspired by the love a great grandmother for her first great grandchild.
