Hello friends!

Sunny days, blazing temperatures and kids out of school mean it’s officially

summertime! We’re celebrating with bright ideas and fun happenings that’ll keep you (and the wee ones) entertained all season long.

First up on the list: if you’re still in search of the perfect Father’s Day gift or

Hailing from the gorgeous island of Maui, Hawaii, we are thrilled to showcase the stunning imagery of Barb Toyama of Endless Summer Photography! Free-spirited and adventurous, Toyama finds peace closest to the ocean and enjoys using its natural beauty as a backdrop for her client sessions. From family portraits to capturing the innocence of childhood, Toyama seeks to create meaningful, personalized experiences for clients to cherish for years to come.

Tell us a little about your photography journey, and when you knew you wanted to make your love of photography into a career. My love affair with photography started around 10 years old in Switzerland where I grew up, when I used my saved up allowance to purchase a 110 film camera. 10 years later, by lucky coincidence, I ended up doing a foreign exchange year at Colorado Mountain College, unaware that they offered a professional photography program. Long story short, my exchange "year" turned into three and a degree in photography. Making another long story short, after years of feeling like something was missing working in a creative agency I had joined after graduating, a lightbulb moment happened when I started second shooting weddings for a college friend. I found so much joy in documenting the kids at these weddings, I bought a new camera, put on my big girl panties, and officially opened doors as a children's and family photographer. A few years later I moved to Hawaii, and photographing on the beach and in the water made me fall in love with family photography all over again.

Your work is full of joy! From where (or whom!) do you derive inspiration? I believe our photographs are in part a reflection of ourselves. As a happy, joyful person, I carry those feelings from my heart into my work, and am naturally drawn to the fun, lighthearted moments and connections I observe in the families I photograph. So my inspiration is a collaboration between the joy and love of my clients and my own. Of course my location doesn't hurt - it's easy to bring out happiness in children running around Hawaii's beaches, and even the more tightly wound parents gladly relax under swaying palm trees. We love that you absolutely don't mind capturing memories for families who are only in Hawaii for a short time. Are there certain families and client stories that stick with you? What I love about photographing visiting families, is experiencing the magic of Hawaii over and over through their eyes. Whether I get to be part of a baby's first salty toes, or photograph a client's vacation year after year, everyone

leaves with a story and a connection to Hawaii, and I love providing tangible proof of those stories. The families that stick closest to my heart are always those that let me in the most. The ones I get to join doing their thing they do on vacation - splashing, playing, relaxing and connecting. Just raw, honest family moments big and small, from first experiences like seeing fish while snorkeling, to seemingly insignificant little details like a quick hug, a subtle touch, or a shared laugh. Perfectly imperfect family moments complemented with sticky fingers from shave ice, sandy feet, and windswept hair. It takes a giant dose of vulnerability to allow a photographer in that deep, and I never take that trust my clients give me for granted, but I am a firm believer that these photos, picturing what life on vacation felt like, will mean the most 10 or 20 years down the road. You are also passionate about volunteering your skills and time, specifically to the cause of rescue animals who need loving homes. What is your advice to photographers looking to make a difference with their business? As photographers, we always talk about the impact an image can have. So doesn't it only makes sense to apply our talents and make a difference where help is needed? While I commend photographers traveling the world to help in other countries, small deeds within our local communities are equally important. What are your passions? Whether it's rescue animals, homeless families, pediatric cancer, victims of domestic violence, or the environment, there are many existing nonprofit organizations advocating for these causes and will happily let you know how you can help. Photography is needed in many forms - Â marketing materials, donated sessions, prints for silent auctions, event coverage, or simply spreading the word about their cause by telling their story. Don't get hung up thinking you have to start your own non-profit to make a difference. Small actions have a bigger impact than big plans that never come to fruition. What simple step can you take today that will allow you to start giving tomorrow?the better. That would be incredible.Â To see more of Barb's work, please visit her site here!

Three Tips P H O T O G R A P H I NG U N D E RWAT E R | BY B A R B T OYA M A

1- Go With The Flow - Underwater photography is a whole different ballgame with its own set of rules. Much is out of your control. If you are willing to let go of fixated ideas and visions, and instead observe what is happening and find your composition within that, you might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Sometimes, magic happens underwater, so don't be afraid to try different things, and there's no such thing as overshooting. 2- Safety First - No shot is worth putting yourself or your client at risk. I'm always aware of my client's comfort level and don't push them beyond it, especially pregnant women and kids. First and foremost, I want them to have a great, fun experience. When shooting with dresses or props, it's always a good idea to try them out underwater first - fabric can become very heavy when wet. 3- Image Quality - The following two factors affect your image quality the most, and knowing how to deal with them both while shooting and in post processing will greatly help in your quest towards beautiful underwater imagery. 1) Water clarity - it's like shooting through a clean or dirty window. Chlorine, sunscreen, debris and sand/dirt all worsen clarity. You can't always control water conditions, but minimizing the distance between lens and subject does help. 2) Proximity of subject to the light source - as you dive down deeper below the surface, you not only continue to loose light, but more and more red is removed from your image. Shooting close to the water surface results in the best skin tones.
