down the days until Santa’s arrival, we’re celebrating the season with festive news and events crafted specifically for you!
For those who were unable to join us for the final Gathering of 2016, have
no fear! We will resume fellowship in the New Year with hopes of growing and strengthening our community by adding more inspiring ambassadors to our team. If you’re interested, be on the lookout for the opening of 2017 NAPCP Ambassador applications, coming soon.
Speaking of inspiring colleagues, this month’s issue features the first-place
winners of the July International Image Competition. Their photographs are filled with fervor and beauty, and we are excited to share their work with you. If you didn’t get a chance to participate in this competition, we invite you to join us for our next International Image Competition beginning in January. For those who are not yet NAPCP members, submit your application now to be eligible to enter the competition.
With only a few weeks left until we venture to the gorgeous city of Santa Barbara,

From our family to yours, we wish each of you a very merry holiday season!
Cheers!

Your editing style is lovely. What is your favorite editing tool? I am actually in awe of so many of my peers in this industry with their editing skills! I feel like my editing is very simplistic. I do mostly hand editing, with minor action use - just for boost or B&W conversion. I however could NOT survive without my Wacom. It is attached to me at all times. I find the pen just so easy to use and a lifesaver for my wrist. I do also subscribe to Jinky Art’s editing videos. It is a wonderful way to boost my creative energy in the low months. I watch a few of Barb’s videos, and get so inspired to branch out from the norm and try something different, editing wise.

What does family photography mean to you? Life is full of these fleeting moments. So many of them, we don’t even realize are flying by. One day, your son is a walking talking toddler, the next he’s off to kindergarten. You blink and he’s in high school. We will NEVER get these moments back. We not only need to cherish them and do what we can to slow the time down, but we also need to capture them. Photographing families in a lifestyle type format...allows for photographs to be printed and show when little Greyson was making a certain look when pondering a blade of grass or when sweet Amelia was 6 and she wanted to be a princess with a crown. Children change, they grown and evolve. They will gain certain characteristics and lose others. We want to capture those and be able to recall them. We are able to lock time into a single moment - in a photo. The most important things in life are our photographs. Our children will have them for decades to remember their journey. BECCA WOHLWINDER | Facing the Storm | FIRST PLACE, Seniors
What is it that inspires you most about your photography niche? Each child inspires me in so many different ways! I love getting to see their goofiness along with those quiet moments when they think I’m not watching. Getting to see the way a little girl is looking at her daddy with the utmost wonder in her eyes or a mother whispering secrets in her son’s ears and watching his face light up. It’s amazing to witness! We might say that your trademark is including the sweeping New Mexico environment in your photos. What is your favorite tool to help you achieve that so beautifully? I think the landscape here is so beautiful! So I love using my 24mm or my 15mm to capture the whole scene. We are blessed with some amazing sunsets and skies too, so of course I love using wide angle lenses to capture those! 12 | NAPCP Newsletter December 2016

What is one piece of advice you can offer to photographers just starting out? Best advice I think is to believe in yourself. It is often the hardest task to master as we are our own worse critic. Have a great support system, you will need it. Surround yourself with positive people and value what you do. Charge accordingly even if you think people will never pay what you are asking. The right person will. What are some of your personal and professional goals for the new year? My goals for next year are to balance work and personal life a bit better. 2016 was an amazing year for me, but I also worked as much as never before. I will have to learn to let go and not to put so much pressure on myself and to take a few nights per week off where I don’t edit. I would like to continue on the path I am going now, and it is always great to expand your business, but I also want to make sure that I spend time with my family in 2017.
SPOTLIGHT WINNER
SUZANNE TAYLOR | Their Madonna | FIRST PLACE, Family
How has being a mother influenced your photography? The hopes of being a mother one day is what initially had me pick up a camera and start practicing over 10 years ago now. Since having my oldest who is six and my triplets who are 4, it has given me the opportunity to embrace childhood and try to capture those beautiful moments that exist for such short periods of time as our children so rapidly grow. I yearn to remember the beauty of each of my children as they grow and they develop into the people they are destined to be - without the gift of photography I wouldn’t have the beautiful images I have and cherish more then anything in the world (short of them of course).

Where do you see yourself and your photography business in 5 years? I hope that Baby Angels has expanded beyond Dubai into other cities within the Middle East. I also hope that the company will have grown in size to offer specialist services in children’s photography, underwater shoots, weddings and family documentaries – also adding video content. Will you take a moment to tell us about your life in Dubai? Hectic! I have to juggle raising three small kids and running a business. But the good things is there is no shortage of great beaches, great weather and great food. I also love the wonderful mix of people, with over 90% of the population born outside this country.

We love your use of light in your winning image. What is one tip you have for photographers who want to “go” natural light but are intimidated? Understand how to use light and shadow to your advantage. Finding soft, even light is what I always strive for when I want to create a beautiful portrait. Will you give us some advice on posing without making the imagery look canned? I find posing with babies and small children comes naturally because they are spontaneous and fall into adorable poses without much direction from me. It’s older subjects that you have to work harder at getting natural poses and smiles. Connecting with your subjects by talking to them about friends, school and other things that interest them helps them to relax and works wonders for better poses and smiles. JESSICA PUGLIESE | Lean On Me | FIRST PLACE, Newborns
We’d love to hear what you think makes a great newborn image. What I believe makes a great newborn image is making sure the baby looks comfortable and content. Also, getting soft lighting by place the baby correctly to feather the light. What is your go-to lens? My go to lens is most definitely the Nikon 35mm 1.4. I love how sharp and fast it is, and how close I can get to clients for a personable feel!

Your young company is making its name allowing photographers (and parents) to rent luxury items for children, benefiting non-profit giving partners. Tell us a little bit more about how you got started, and your STYLED TO GIVE campaign! One little dress hanging in my daughter’s closet was the life changer that has sent me on this amazing journey. I purchased a tutu du monde dress for Ayla’s second birthday, and she didn’t get to wear it because it was freezing that day and the party was outside. I eventually used it for family photos but felt a little guilty since I had spent so much on something she only got to wear once. When I tried reselling it without success my husband actually suggested that I try renting some items out. I started the group page on Facebook as a trial and things exploded. read more We’re thrilled to welcome The Borrowed Boutique as a 2017 NAPCP Retreat sponsor. What do child photographers mean to your business, and how did you ultimately decide that ‘we’ are your niche? We adore child photographers!!!! They are the perfect clients! Not only are they repeat customers, but they are willing to spread the word about our business to their clients. I believe that our business has been so successful because of the support that we have received from the child photography community. Styled shoots can cost a ton of money. We are able to ease that cost.read more
