BEHIND THE STORY This year’s Best of Naperville voters had two major priorities: their teeth and the food they use those teeth to eat the most, which is pizza. Best Dentist and Best Pizza were the categories with the most votes (994 and 900, respectively). Other popular sections included Best Italian, Best Hair Salon, and Best Fitness Club. Analysis: our readers are living their best life. They like to eat and look good while doing it.

ach month this column is always that last thing on my to-do list. While the rest of the issue is in the safe hands of our production manager, who is preparing files for the printer, I’m trying to compose something relevant and elegant that reflects the issue. When I think back on the three Best of Naperville issues I’ve published (there are now 11 total), the top-ofmind word to describe them is data. While the highly anticipated issue is the byproduct of months of planning and marketing, it really all comes down to the votes. And though the selection process relies heavily on technology, it’s more intriguing than you would think. Once the voting is over, the data are downloaded and passed directly to a third party for validation (read: throw out fraudulent votes) and analysis. One of the most challenging aspects of this process is the company name variations that come into play. While we’re dedicated to a fill-in response so each category is fair and impartial, it requires the need for interpretation. For example, one voter might type “Wentz” for best music venue, and another might type “NCC” for North Central College, which is the campus on which Wentz Hall sits. Is the second vote thrown out, or is a judgment call made about the intention of the voter? This is the soft part of the science, the human decisions that need to be made along the way. This year a salon landed on the Best Photographer list, and we included a note to explain why. There was a two-way tie for a winner in one category, and a three-way tie for runner-up in another. The results are not always neat and tidy, but they are true. Integrity guides the way in every decision that is made. That, and our dear readers—this issue is about you and your votes. Enjoy.

rom haircuts to training camp and security to social media, Nick Greene’s cover story is an intimate look at the daily life of Mitch Trubisky: While there are only 16 games during the NFL’s regular season, being a quarterback is a year-round job. It’s kind of like being the lone physician in a small town in this regard, and Trubisky assumed his duties after roughly three decades of medical malpractice by his predecessors. Bears training camp is less than two weeks away at this point, and Trubisky, a northeast Ohio native, is back in Chicago for just one day before he jets off to California for a last-minute tune-up with quarterback guru Adam Dedeaux. He’s taking advantage of his brief stint in town to get a haircut, which may explain why his baseball cap stayed glued to his head all morning…. Lawrence Funk’s barbershop is a block from the Harold Washington Library Center in the Loop, and the space is festooned with old-timey tonsorial accoutrements (there are multiple barber’s poles inside the shop). “He is literally a barber historian,” Trubisky says. Funk marvels at the quarterback’s curly bangs when he takes off his hat. “It’s been a month,” Tribusky says defensively, and he asks for his usual cut and some minor facial hair maintenance (the [playoff ] beard is staying). He sits in the main chair by the window, and on the mirror is a decal reading “Barber of the Chicago Bears.” Funk travels to Halas Hall to cut many of the players’ hair during the season, and he straight-razor shaves the dome of head coach Matt Nagy every week. “It’s part of his ritual,” Trubisky says.

INFLUENCERS, EVENTS AND ISSUES ON OUR WEST SUBURBAN RADAR

ince taking over in 2016, Smith is 9–27 and has failed to reach a single bowl game for the University of Illinois. The football team has been at its worst in conference games, going 4–23, including the first 0–9 league finish in school history. When Smith first arrived at Illinois, he signed a six-year contract. After three losing seasons, athletic director Josh Whitman gave him a two-year contract extension—likely in part due to the amount of money it would cost Illinois to terminate Smith. If the school decides to make a change, it is going to be costly: $4 million after the 2019 season, $2 million after 2020, and $1 million after 2021. In 30 years covering University of Illinois football for the Champaign News-Gazette, I’ve seen five coaches fired and one leave for another job. What’s it going to be for Lovie Smith? This season will help decide if the former Bears coach can turn Illinois football around.

Memorial Stadium

YES If the freshman phenom is ready. St. Louis Trinity’s Isaiah Williams is the most highly anticipated quarterback to join the Illini since Isiah “Juice” Williams in 2006. The new Williams is expected to help right away. If Reggie Corbin hits 1K again. The tailback gained just 78 yards in 2017 before romping for 1,085 in 2018. Corbin is on the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation’s top running back. If the offensive line keeps drilling. Four starters are back, and the lone departee, Nick Allegretti, is being replaced by Alabama transfer Richie Petitbon. Center Doug Kramer and tackles Vederian Lowe and Alex Palczewski are Chicago-area products. If he sweeps nonconference games. Akron, UConn, and Eastern Michigan went a combined 12–25 last season and lost gobs of players to graduation. Smith has never started 3–0 at Illinois. It’s time. If Lovie loses the beard. The coach’s thick, white facial hair is a hot topic among Illini fans on social media. The consensus: Please shave. They hope the beard has been part of the problem.

16 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

NO If the defense can’t stop anybody. In 2018, the Illini gave up 63 points to Penn State, Maryland, and Iowa. The unit finished 123rd (out of 129) in points allowed. Yuck. If another star player gets hurt. The Illini are already without defensive end Bobby Roundtree, who suffered an off-season injury. Depth is an issue. If the crowds turn against him. When Smith was hired before the 2016 season, he had the full support of the Illinois fans. But after a 9–27 start, their patience is running out. If the staff changes don’t work. Bob McClain is taking over the offensive line. Former Illini Mike Bellamy is now coaching the running backs. Miles Smith, Lovie’s son, is working with the linebackers. Keynodo Hudson is now in charge of the cornerbacks. And, most important, Lovie Smith is now the defensive coordinator. Nobody else is to blame if the team continues to struggle. If the schedule is too difficult. The Illini face eight teams that played in bowls last season. Finding wins against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, and Northwestern won’t be easy. The Illini figure to be underdogs in all those games.

DEEP ROUTES Pro tips for taking a two-wheel spin through the suburbs By Mark Loehrke

W

hile many people tend to think of biking as strictly a summertime activity, true enthusiasts know it can be a year-round passion—with fall being one of its most comfortable and scenic windows of opportunity. So don’t sentence that two-wheeler to an off-season on the garage ceiling hooks just yet—get out there and pedal the ’burbs on one of these great trail recommendations from a few biking veterans.

With almost 33 miles of well-maintained and scenic pathways accessible from multiple points throughout several suburbs—and with plenty of great stops along the way—the DuPage River Trail is one of the area’s true standard-bearers for bicyclists of all ages, abilities, and interests. Naperville Bicycle Club member Umesh Tawari has been riding parts of the trail for the past several years, and his favorite portion, the 3.5-mile loop around Whalon Lake, is likely high on the list of many area riders. “The river trail to Whalon Lake is a particularly pretty ride with a lot of shade,” Tawari notes. “And the nearby Knoch Knolls Nature Center is a fun stop for kids and adults.”

GREENE VALLEY FOREST PRESERVE TO WARRENVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY As a member of the Downers Grove Bicycle Club for the past 10 years, Susan Hayse has worked out a number of favorite routes across the western suburbs, but one of her go-to options has long been this roughly 12-mile street/trail combo trip over parts of the DuPage River Trail north through downtown Naperville. “This route is good for new riders, good for families with older children, and fun for experienced riders looking for a ‘rest’ day,” she says. “And Naperville offers plenty of nice spots for refreshments along the way!”

Whalon Lake Loop

18 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

WAUBONSIE CREEK TRAIL Despite having biked over 100,000 miles in his lifetime, it’s extremely rare for Ed Barsotti to load up his bike on the car and drive somewhere for the sole purpose of going for a ride—almost all of his rides tend to start and end at his house, thus dictating his “favorite” routes. But portions of several of those favorites do take the chief programs officer of Ride Illinois (rideillinois.org) on popular area trails, including this almost-daily trip: “My favorite route is a short 7.2-mile round trip, six miles of which are on the Waubonsie Creek Trail in Aurora,” Barsotti says. “I ride it at the end of my work day at the home office, or for a short ride on weekend days when I don’t go for a longer ride somewhere else. I ride this trail five times a week, and maybe three times per week during winter (when it’s not covered by snow). Over 17 years, I’ve probably been on the trail over 3,000 times.”

Springbrook Prairie

OTHER AREA FAVORITES Springbrook Prairie Don’t be fooled by the seeming ease of the six-mile crushed-gravel loop—several challenging uphill stretches help turn this short-distance ride into a really decent fall workout. Fox River Trail The portion of this 43-mile trail that hugs the river and passes through Batavia, Geneva, and St. Charles offers ample opportunities to stop for a relaxing coffee—or, better yet, a cone at the iconic Batavia Creamery. Illinois Prairie Path The mother of all area rails-to-trails efforts is this 61-mile, three-county behemoth skirting Naperville’s northernmost sections and connecting to dozens of nearby (and not-sonearby) communities.

SCI-FI THRILLS A celebrated screenwriter debuts his first novel By Allison Duncan

T

here’s a science to the art of building suspense. Think of the shaking cups of water in the early scenes of 1993’s Jurassic Park, disturbed by an unknown predator— later revealed to be a T. rex—coming closer. Or the lightning strikes at the beginning of 2005’s War of the Worlds that spark paranoia of potential devastation yet to come. And if there is an academic approach to building suspense in these scenes, writer David Koepp has a PhD in the subject. He’s the celebrated screenwriter and director behind those big-screen blockbusters and others, like 2002’s Spider-Man and

1992’s Mission: Impossible, and his work has grossed over $6 billion worldwide. This fall, the Midwest native transitions from the screen to the page with his literary debut Cold Storage, an infectiously fun and cinematic read about three strangers who must work together to contain a highly contagious, deadly organism. The suspense builds early, when Pentagon bioterror operatives are sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack in western Australia. Upon arrival, they come across a lone suitcase in the middle of the road 50 yards outside of town with no one and nothing else around it.

The contents are a highly mutative organism—described as a frothy green fungus at once “alive” and “visibly seething” and “swelling at the seams with ready-to-spread spores”—capable of extinction-level destruction. Koepp illustrates the organism’s evolution in such a visceral way that when it rapidly adapts to breach level A hazmat suits, you wonder what’s next. But the threat is contained and later buried in cold storage deep beneath a little-used military repository. Decades later it evolves and escapes on its way toward world destruction that only Diaz and two unwitting security guards, one an ex-con and the other a single mother, can stop. Readers will undoubtedly experience a few belly laughs, courtesy of Koepp’s astute sense of humor. Among the novel’s best qualities are the breakneck pacing, which primarily takes place over the course of one fateful night, references to the modern-day threat of climate change, and—of course—learning the fate of humanity itself.

BETTER TOGETHER

HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS Students played matchmaker for these two East Aurora teachers By Lisa Arnett

I

t just so happens that at East Aurora High School, a lot of students in band also happen to take French. That’s a crucial detail in the story of how French teacher Sarah Birdsall, 33, and band director Joe Kulick, 27, came to meet. “The kids would kind of start teasing me, being like, ‘Hey Ms. Birdsall, you know that new band director? I think you guys are soulmates,’ ” she says. “It became a running joke the entire school year, but I never saw him because our school is so big.” When Birdsall volunteered to help chaperone the band’s trip to Disney World, Kulick’s colleague took fate into his own hands and assigned them to the same bus. It seemed their dear students

22 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

were onto something: They became fast friends and later on a trip to Cuba with mutual friends, discovered they had a romantic connection. Kulick planned to propose on a Columbus Day weekend trip to New Buffalo, Michigan, but when Birdsall became suspicious, he decided instead to re-create one of their favorite early dates—a dinner at La Sorella di Francesca and dessert at Le Chocolat du Bouchard—a week before the trip. Kulick recruited their parents to decorate the balcony of their Naperville condo with roses, candles, and a garland of photos that chronicled their relationship. When he and Birdsall returned home, he popped the question. “It was truly like a fairy tale,” she says. “I was totally blown away.”

They married June 8 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Naperville. “We loved the intimacy of the space. During the ceremony, it felt like everyone there was so close,” Kulick says. “Our pastor, Lucas King, wrote this incredible sermon about how being in love and being in a marriage is being both a teacher and a student,” Birdsall says. When the couple arrived at their reception at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton, they were greeted by friends and family at a surprise patio cocktail hour arranged by Birdsall’s mother, and dancing ensued once the party continued inside. Naturally, this musically inclined groom did extensive research before landing on Blue Water Kings for their wedding band. “They blew it out of the water. It was unbelievable,” he says. For their honeymoon, the couple took a Mediterranean cruise with stops in Barcelona, Spain; Florence, Italy; Mykonos, Greece; and Malta.

EXPERT ADVICE

OLD PIECES, NEW LIFE How to revitalize furniture with a little creativity (and a lot of paint) By Mark Loehrke “

T

hey don’t make them like they used to” is a familiar refrain among furniture shoppers, who often long for the unique designs, classic craftsmanship or sentimental associations of an old end table or bookshelf. But can’t quite make those outdated pieces work amid their more contemporary surroundings. Decorative painter Laura Campbell believes that in many cases all it takes to bridge the gap between past and present—and to save money, update one’s home and help reduce waste in the process—is a good coat of paint. BEST BETS Campbell says end tables, bookshelves, and bedroom furniture tend to be the most common redo projects, especially when someone likes the look and size of a piece but it just doesn’t match their décor. Other popular candidates are items where the owners like the sentimental value, but not the look—like grandma’s curio cabinet or an old portable bar cabinet from the ’50s. “There’s a sense of pride when tackling a project, especially with a piece of furniture that has a special history or meaning to it,” she says. THE RIGHT MATERIALS Just about anyone can be a furniture rehabber, according to Campbell, as long as they do some solid prep work. This means having sandpaper, oil-based primer, quality paint, and a wax or polyurethane sealer on hand and ready to go. ESCHEWING PERFECTION Campbell says to start small with something small, like an end table or accent piece, and just let the muse take it from there. “Remember that there’s a little artist in all of us—it doesn’t have to be perfect,” she says. “Painting something with a perfectly smooth and flawless finish can be hard to do, but nowadays everyone likes the distressed/ worn look anyway.”

Step under the machine arm to work quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Change the level of resistance by turning the knob on the base for this move that builds leg and hip muscle endurance.

By Kristina McGrath Low humidity and mild temperatures—and the impending threat of the cold weather to come—make September the perfect month to spend as much time as possible outdoors. Instead of hitting the gym, why not head to one of three local parks? Nike Sports Complex (288 W. Diehl Rd.), Meadow Glens Park (1303 Muirhead Ave.), and Commissioners Park (3704 111th St.) all have outdoor fitness stations, plus surrounding jogging paths. Jogging from station to station is a nice way to incorporate cardio into your day’s workout. GOAL Connect with nature, get some fresh air and vitamin D, and get in a great workout. Teens (13+) and adults can tailor the exercises for all fitness levels. Perform three sets of each movement, 10 to 15 reps, resting 60 to 90 seconds between sets.

CHEST PRESS AND SEATED ROW

Push out to work your chest (chest press), and pull in to work your back muscles (seated row). Adjust the resistance under the seat.

EQUIPMENT Each station includes an illustrated guide to the exercises. Adjust resistance on machines as needed. Search the Naperville Park District's YouTube channel for videos of each workout. PULL-UP AND DIP

Multiple strength-building exercises for the upper body. Pull-ups work the lats, and dips work the chest and triceps.

ASSISTED ROW AND PUSHUP

This upper-body workout exercises multiple muscles with several activities in one station. Bars of multiple heights accommodate all fitness levels.

AB CRUNCH AND LEG LIFT

Works both the upper and lower abdominals to tone your core. Insert feet into upper bar to perform sit-ups. While lying on bench, hold lower bar and lift legs 90 degrees.

LIFESPRING MINISTRIES Giving hope to homeless women and children By Julie Duffin

J

anet Hershey knows what it’s like to be a single, teenage mom struggling with addiction. As a mother of two by the age of 18, she was fortunate enough to have the support of her family. Now she pays it forward by mentoring other women suffering from addiction, abuse, and financial difficulties as a volunteer through Lifespring Ministries. Located in Aurora, Lifespring is a division of Wayside Cross Ministries that provides long-term transitional living programs for homeless women. As a Christ-centered recovery program, Lifespring focuses on healing the whole person through Bible studies and 30 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

biblical counseling, as well as classes in parenting, finances, cooking, nutrition, GED tutoring, computer skills, and résumé writing. Women live in the facility from six months to a year in adherence to strict rules designed to empower them to turn their lives around. “The program is very structured,” Hershey says. “It helps women to really look at their personal issues, figure out what brought them here, and what they need to do in order to break the cycle.” Housing is available both to individual women and those with children. Residents share cooking and house-

keeping responsibilities as they learn to work together and live in a cooperative environment. Hershey points out that working through issues together is a big part of the program. “When you are at the worst point of your life, and you end up at a place with other women who are at the worst point in their lives, it can be very challenging. Plus many [residents] are moms with very different parenting styles and abilities. They really have to be committed to the program in order to succeed.” If someone doesn’t follow the rules, they are asked to leave to make room for someone else. The need is so great that Lifespring turns away 24 families (about 40 to 50 children) and 14 women without children every month, simply due to a lack of space. Once residents graduats from the program they are able to receive 12 to 18 months of additional support, including living in one of Lifespring’s apartments. Regardless of where they live, Lifespring helps them furnish and set up their new homes with items

They have built up a support network and are on their way to self-sufficiency. “Although not everyone is a success story, many women I’ve worked with have graduated from the program, have their own apartments, and are doing really well,” Hershey says. Committed to their success, she always encourages them to reach out to her whenever they feel the need. Hershey began volunteering at Lifespring nine years ago. After finding her faith in her mid-’30s, she felt a strong calling to help others. One day she noticed a childhood friend on social media, who had been addicted to heroin, was living at Lifespring. Surprised she had never heard of the local nonprofit before, Hershey immediately volunteered as a mentor. “When I first meet women there, they can’t imagine that I’ve faced similar struggles. he Edward Foundation raised $447,000 at its 26th annual charity golf tournament on July 15 at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont. More than 300 golfers enjoyed an afternoon of golf followed by dinner, an awards ceremony, and a silent auction. The winning team on Cog Hill’s Dubsdread course included Steve Chirico, Kelly Keegan, Walker Moore, and James Park. Other course winners included Joshua Hickey, John Saletta, Brad Schulman, and Ryan Yagoda. A helicopter ball drop—where participants paid for a chance to have a numbered golf ball dropped from a helicopter to land closest to the flag—was won by Tom Persin of Naperville. Dionne Miller, weekend sports anchor and reporter for ABC-7 Eyewitness News, was the event’s celebrity guest. The foundation, the charitable fundraising organization of Edward Hospital, was established in 1990 and has raised more than $52.5 million in its mission to support Edward Hospital’s community healthcare initiatives.

INCLUSIVE PLAY

Jill Magsam Zmaczynski

I

t has been a team effort to bring an all-inclusive playground to the Lisle Park District, which is expected to begin construction in Community Park (1825 Short St.) this fall. The idea began with Lisle Park District director Dan Garvy, who also serves as president of SEASPAR’s Board of Directors, which led to discussions with Little Tikes and the nonprofit Unlimited Play. Matt Corso and Greg Pavesich from SEASPAR, Lisle resident Sharon Helderle, as well as a team of park district employees have also been involved in the project. A few months into the process, Lisle resident Jill Magsam Zmaczynski emailed Garvy with an inquiry about making new playgrounds more accessible, prompting him to invite her to join

the project. As a mother to a 3-year-old with a rare, genetic neuromuscular condition, Zmaczynski has a very personal connection to the cause. “When we go to a playground, [my daughter] looks for one or two pieces of equipment she can sit on,” she explains. “Her opportunities for interaction are limited, especially with me constantly by her side spotting her or moving her around.” Zmaczynski and her family are looking forward to a playground that will allow both her children to play side by side. “Making a playground inclusive doesn’t make it less appealing or functional for people who don’t need those inclusive aspects,” she notes. “The unique aspects make it more appealing for everyone.”

Discovery Playground, set to break ground this month, will create new opportunities for all children to connect, learn, and grow in a safe environment. The Lisle Partners for Parks Foundation is currently raising money to help offset the cost of the project. To make a donation or learn more about the fundraiser, visit lislepartnersforparks.org.—MD

T

he glowing reputation that Villa St. Benedict (VSB) has garnered over the years is a direct result of the organization’s commitment to the philosophy of “Living Fully, Living Well.” As the bedrock of the culture at Villa St. Benedict, “Living Fully, Living Well” is more than just a mantra. It is a way of life that encompasses the whole you: mind, body and spirit. Numerous hands-on educational programs, social gatherings, rejuvenating health and wellness services and three dining venues give the seniors at Villa St. Benedict the freedom to design the life they have always pictured for themselves. One of the key pieces to “Living Fully, Living Well” is VSB’s Life Enrichment department. Laurie Freeman and her team are responsible for coordinating various interactive activities, from noodle volleyball to live musical entertainment. Their engaging work is the perfect testimonial as to why so many have chosen to call this boutique community their home. “Our team works so well together and our different talents help contribute to all of the various programs and special events

that we are responsible for,” Freeman shared. “The hard work our team in Life Enrichment does truly displays our core value of hospitality at VSB.” Another vital piece to the “Living Fully, Living Well” lifestyle is evident in the campus fitness center, through the work of Dr. Regina Schurman and her team., As the center’s administrator, Dr. Schurman oversees a group of Masters of Physiology students from nearby Benedictine University. Under her tutelage, the students serve as personal trainers and offer daily core and balance classes. Their goal is to help the residents get the most out of every class and to stay physically and mentally fit in the exercise process. ituated between 150 acres of prairie grasses and 500 acres of rolling hills, Emerson Creek was an ideal setting for the June wedding of Jenna and Arnie Fitzwater of Aurora. “We wanted something unique and different. We visited Emerson Creek and we immediately fell in love with it,” says Jenna, about the seven-acre farm in Oswego. “We were looking for rustic elegance, and this venue had that balance.” Emerson Creek (emersoncreek.com) features a renovated barn with chandeliers and ceiling fans and an attached tent for weddings and other events. 100-year-old farmhouse with a wide, welcoming porch where visitors often gather to take a break from shopping. The business is owned by Chris and Dave Demiduk, who had their own wedding in the white and gray barn nine years ago. “It was just a yucky old barn, but we cleaned it out. We put a lot of TLC into it and now it’s pretty,” says Chris, noting that people were soon clamoring to have their weddings there, too. Chris and a partner (who is no longer involved in the business) started Emerson Creek 23 years ago after Chris had worked at Nordstrom in Oak Brook. “I loved Nordstrom and the corporate world, but it was time for a

change, and time for me to do my own thing,” she says. In keeping with her retail background, her first endeavor was establishing the Country View shop, which sells a range of items including signs, clothing, purses, scarves, candles, handcrafted gifts, bridal gifts, and more, all priced between about $10 and $50. “We try to carry things that a lot of shops around us don’t have,” she says. Eventually, the business evolved to include a café that was first open just one day a week, and is now open Tuesday through Saturday. “We make everything fresh and the menu changes every two weeks,” says Chris. For the Fitzwaters’ wedding, 130 guests traveled down a long gravel road that leads to the farm where the ceremony and reception were held. The couple liked that the venue has many peaceful places and serene vistas. “It had a bunch of places for our guests to be,” says Arnie. “There were beautiful fields to look out at, or the hills.” Emerson Creek can accommodate up to 250 for a sit-down dinner and up to 225 for a buffet-style service. The Demiduks say the Emerson Creek venue attracts visitors from Naperville, Rockford, Galena, Champaign, and points beyond. “It’s definitely a destination and that was what we wanted it to be,” says Chris. “We wanted to have a place that would be like no other.”

710 S. COUNTY LINE RD. HINSDALE Have you ever been to a bougie country club, downed a couple gin and tonics and thought, “I could see myself living here forever”? No? Well, whoever built this house in 1913 sure did. The garage and driveway can accommodate 17 cars—let’s hope all those visitors cough up the membership fees. $2,750,000

509 RIDGEMOOR DR. WILLOWBROOK Look, no one was happy Cheers had to end. But to rebuild the entire set and put it in a suburban home? This 9,868-square-foot estate boasts a two-sided, all-wooden watering hole equipped to serve everything from gin martinis to over-the-top validations of dad’s masculinity. $2,025,000

900 SOUTH ELM ST., HINSDALE Built in 2008, this striking modern home has more glass than a Tiffany exhibit. The downside? The string of strangers at the door asking residents to fix their iPads. The sleek swimming pool is just the width of a lap lane—don’t even think about splishing or splashing at this mansion. $2,971,500

HOME DESIGN CENTER DEBUT

S

ince Penny and John Bohnen formed the real estate brokerage County Line Properties in 1991, they’ve wanted to create a “builders’ boutique” that showcases talented craftsmanship. Last October that vision became a reality when John Bohnen reached out to resources he’s known and referred over the years to clients needing specialized services. “We are excited to bring this unique concept to the area. Original, tailor-made work will be generated out of the design center. This is not

an assemblage of a line of products or vendors,” said Bohnen, a Hinsdale resident since 1947. This summer, his collection of accomplished artisans and craftsmen opened at the new County Line Home Design Center in downtown Hinsdale (110 S. Washington St., 630.789.3030), which offers homeowners distinctive and unique finishes. The center showcases businesses that specialize in everything from construction management and interior design to hardscapes and cabinetry.—MD

HOME COOKING Crate & Barrel digs into Oak Brook dining with its first-ever in-store restaurant By Lisa Arnett

I

’ve often walked into a cool new restaurant and marveled that the decor looks like a page out of a chic furniture catalog. At Oakbrook Center, that’s literally the case, now that Crate & Barrel has opened its own restaurant. The Table at Crate (35 Oakbrook Center, 630.590.9444, tableatcrate .com) is located right inside the twostory home store and is filled with its merchandise, from the silverware in your hand to the velvet upholstered 58 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

chair beneath your bum. What looks like a sleek art installation next to the open kitchen is actually, upon closer inspection, dozens of clustered plates, including teacups, saucers, and even deviled egg platters that look like soft sunbursts hanging on the wall. My server kindly informed me that pretty much everything is available for purchase. But let’s be honest: I already know Crate & Barrel has stylish decor. The question is, can they cook?

VEG OUT Crate & Barrel teamed up with Cornerstone Restaurant Group (which also runs nearby Michael Jordan’s Restaurant) and partner Bill Kim (shown at left) designed the menu. Though Kim is most known for awesome Asian fare at treasured Chicago eatery Urbanbelly, he says he’s thrilled to break out of that box here. “I feel like a bird that’s been let out of my cage,” he says. The menu is full of light, leafy options, such as a kale Caesar and a watermelon salad—which is just as pretty as the surrounding dining room, with magenta watermelon cubes, bright green snow peas, radish matchsticks, and briny shrimp on a bed of jet black forbidden rice. It lacked some punch, but asking for more of the savory agave-Dijon dressing did the trick. Deep-dish cauliflower lasagna is Kim’s gluten-free spin on the Italian classic that was served at his childhood Sunday dinners. “My mom used to make lasagna. … It was one of her go-to dishes,” he says. Baked in the cutest porcelain casserole dish, layers of thinly sliced cauliflower with ricotta, pecorino, and mozzarella are punctuated with just enough basil and oregano. It’s definitely delicious, but at $28, feels a little steep for a vegetarian entrée. Kim himself avoids eating lactose, so he’s used dairy alternatives in a number of dishes, including the mushroom fricassee, which features white corn grits from Kankakee-based Three Sisters Garden, tender mushrooms and Brussels sprout leaves in a pool of truffle-laced herb butter. Kim uses coconut milk in the grits to achieve a silky texture, but it leaves a tropical flavor that I found at odds with the truffle. Though Kim doesn’t have children, he says he had fun creating the kids’

menu, which includes choices such as a meatball pot pie: a cup of meatballs and marinara topped with a puffed pastry square. It’s a tasty DIY meatball sandwich that will make a flaky, saucy mess and keep your kiddo occupied while you nosh. (Brownie points for the cute colorable menu and triangle-shaped crayons, which ingeniously don’t roll off the table.) SIPPING TIPS If the weather’s agreeable, dine under black-and-white-striped umbrellas lining the perimeter of the store, or take a drink up to the second-floor terrace. For an Instagram-worthy cocktail, try the Delicate Airs: a mix of gin, kumquat marmalade, fino sherry, and orange flower water served in a coupe garnished with a violet bloom. Nonalcoholic options, such as the spiced strawberry-inflected Berry Bliss, are balanced and nuanced—a welcome change from your stereotypical sugar-sweet mocktail. As of press time, tea service—which will feature Rishi tea, sparkling wines and a tea tower of bite-size treats—was set to debut soon. The walkup bar serving housemade pastries and coffee from Metric, a roastery located near Cornerstone’s office in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, is also a welcome alternative to the mall Starbucks just a few paces away.

Whether patriotic refrains or rabble-rousing appeals, songs have become symbolic anthems of great movements in the U.S. The acclaimed ensemble Chicago a cappella presents tunes like the 1970’s women’s rights mantra “I Am Woman,” the anti-war sentiments of Bob Dylan, and more, as they illuminate the connections between music and history in this exciting concert inspired by the NPR series.

CANNED COCKTAILS Are ready-to-drink beverages class or crass? Here are some collective thoughts on what my friends and I chilled, shook, and poured over ice By Kathy Aabram

CARDINAL SPIRITS Bramble Mule A riff on the Moscow Mule, this red festive drink is bursting with hibiscus, raspberry, and ginger notes. The alcohol is imperceptible and the drink is on the sweet side, which makes it dangerous. Serve over ice with a twist of lime. We all loved it.

TWO BROTHERS ARTISAN SPIRITS Strawberry Vodka Lemonade You will taste the vodka in this surprisingly dry, delicious, and smooth drink. None of us were prepared to like it as much as we did. (I mean, strawberry lemonade is for kids, right?!) A tip of the glass goes to local purveyors (and brothers) Jim and Jason Ebel for this fine concoction.

GREENHOOK GINSMITHS Gin & Tonic This is not widely available in the Midwest, but Greenhook (greenhookgin .com) should expand beyond its East Coast origins soon. The gin is high quality and bites through the tonic with crisp and bracing satisfaction. It was a thumbs-up in our group. Drink one, and then open another to make sure you believe your own sense of good taste.

CUTWATER Tequila Lime Margarita Heavy on the booze and light on the margarita, this is the ready-made cocktail for tequila lovers. Or you could skip the can and just pour yourself a shot of tequila. Quarters anyone? None of us would recommend it.

NEW HOLLAND SPIRITS Blueberry Gin Lemonade Get past the blueberry smell and you’ll find yourself with a nicely balanced tart gin and lemonade. While none of us could taste the blueberry, we all liked this drink. A couple of us thought it could use a bit more gin, but overall it was very good.

CHICAGO DISTILLING Canned Old Fashioned with Blind Tiger Bourbon This pleasant-smelling drink is heavy on the cinnamon and ginger. Although the bourbon was strong, the drink lacks complexity overall. It may taste better when the snow is on the ground and the fire is roaring. We split on our opinions—the women liked it well enough, but the men, not so much.

KOLOA KAUA'I Mai Tai Cocktail Flat, cloyingly sweet, and heavy on the almond extract, we collectively hated this drink. (The addition of yellow #5 should have tipped us off.) None of us could taste the rum—it may have been there but we couldn’t drink it long enough to find out. Once you’ve had a real Mai Tai at the Monkey Pod in Maui, you just can’t drink this pale imitation. VITANI Cosmopolitan This is the drink for every Cosmoloving woman who is too tired to drag out the vodka, lime and cranberry juices, and triple sec. It’s flavorful, smooth, and balanced; decent over ice, but perfect when shaken.

Be sure to follow directions on the label: If it says pour it over ice, then do it. Some drinks, that were mediocre when sipped directly from the can, were transformed when shaken or served over rocks. Most can be purchased at a grocery or liquor store near you. 68 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

estaurateur Wendy Reed opened the comfortable eatery Gaetano’s in downtown Batavia with a partner in 2014. But after a medical leave of absence last year, Reed took sole ownership of the business in 2019 and has rebranded the Italian restaurant with a new name: Veritá, which means truth in Italian. “The inspiration for the name comes from Roman mythology and the story of Veritas, the beautiful goddess,” says Reed. She worked closely with a designer to implement new signage, intended to attract the eyes of pedestrians and motorists passing the restaurant’s prime location at the corner of River and Wilson Streets, as well as to put her personal mark on the space. “This is about how our restaurant has evolved. We are upscale without being pretentious,” says Reed. “We

ROOM by ROOM FROM GLAM TO FARMHOUSE, LOCAL DESIGNERS SHARE INSPIRATIONAL TIPS FOR EVERY HOME STYLE BY LISA ARNETT

oday’s modern home isn’t just about the ever-popular open floor plan. Dining spaces are becoming more casual. The study has become more useful than ever with the rise of remote work. The formal living room (as it once was) is all but dead—instead, families are converting the space into a playroom or forgoing it altogether—making the family room the primary gathering and entertaining space. And, of course, every homeowner needs a blissful master bedroom for the day’s end retreat. We asked four local designers to walk us through the creation of these rooms in homes around the western suburbs. Whether you’re in the throes of a home remodel, or just daydreaming about a redesign, prepare to be inspired.

MASTER BEDROOM

For an offbeat twist, Bowman positioned artwork on either side of the bed. “I just wanted to incorporate them a little bit differently than you might typically see,” she says. “You don’t have to put anything over the headboard.”

The table legs, vase, and lamp base all feature different metallic finishes. “Trying not to be too matchy with things, and mixing metals, will also help to keep the space timeless as well … as metals go in and out of trend,” Bowman says.

LESLIE BOWMAN

The Design Bar, Burr Ridge

This Western Springs master bedroom is a picture-perfect example of design director Leslie Bowman’s “transitional glam” style, which mixes formal, glamorous pieces with organic elements.

Draperies in a charcoal geometric shibori fabric inspired Bowman to decorate the room in shades of gray, from light gray paint on the walls to the deeper tone of a dramatically tall upholstered headboard. Paired with white bedding, that headboard provides a neutral base for pillows in a whimsical gray print that could be switched with other colors years later, or even seasonally. “You can add in blue; you can add in hot pink; you can add in green … you could even throw orange in there and it would look pretty,” she says.

And her one tip for a bedroom? “Never buy the whole bedroom set,” Bowman says. She especially likes nonmatching nightstands. For this room, she used an oval table on one side and a bed table with iridescent capiz shell drawers on the other.

STUDY

Built-in drawers beneath the window seat provide bonus storage, while the tweedy seat cushions and striped pillows lend a pleasing punch of pattern.

MICHAEL ABRAMS

Michael Abrams Interiors, Chicago

At this family’s newly built home in Hinsdale, the study was separate from the rest of the open-concept first floor— including its neutral tones and white trim. “It gave us the opportunity to do something very different and dramatic, with doing a dark trim color that we don’t have anywhere else in the house,” Michael Abrams says. 84 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

The rug, with its subtle geometric print, was Abrams’s springboard for the room’s palette of ivory with shades of slate blue. “It provides some contrast [against the darker floor, trim and walls] and it has that subtle hint of slate blue-gray undertone, so I think that really pops.”

A desk, credenza, and side table—painted white and slate blue, respectively— provide storage in the form of pull-out trays to hide equipment such as a printer or shredder, along with a few file drawers. “We are seeing so much less demand for file space these days,” Abrams says. “People are not heavy paper users as they were.”

PHOTOS BY MARCEL PAGE PHOTOGRAPHY (ROOM), PICTURE PERFECT HOUSE (COLLANDER)

DINING ROOM Grass cloth wallpaper on all four walls provides a rich, organic-looking texture. “The grass cloth is a natural material with an underlying hint of that slate [blue color],” Abrams says.

White sheer curtain panels with a geometric pattern add a contrasting softness to the room’s hard surfaces.

LAUREN COLLANDER LC Interiors, Naperville

PHOTOS BY SCOTT SHIGLEY

Dark iron hardware on the credenza and window seat drawers matches the iron chandelier and sconces. “I like to layer in lighting sources and give as many different sources as possible … so you can have different lighting levels depending on the day or what you’re doing,” he says.

When you step through the front door of this Woodridge home, the dining room is the very first thing you’ll see. “[The family] wanted this ‘wow’ moment, and they also wanted it to be a more casual dining space,” says interior designer Lauren Collander, owner of LC Interiors.

A round wooden table sets the laid-back tone from the start. “I wanted the room to feel as large as possible … and with the darker table and darker floors, it feels bigger,” she says. Collander selected the cognac leather chairs for their warm hue and durable, kid-friendly finish.

A board-and-batten wall painted charcoal gray adds architectural detail, while a matte black metal chandelier with smoky glass orbs draws the eye upward. “It’s triangularly shaped, so it offers a different geometry than the round table … and really coordinates with geometry of the chair legs,” Collander says. FAMILY ROOM

GABY ALONSO-CARMONA Urban 1111 Design, Lombard

For this home remodel in Wheaton, the homeowners hired principal interior designer Gaby Alonso-Carmona to transform their family room into a more adult space where their three children could also be comfortable.

“The formal living room became a playroom, so they wanted the family room to be a place where they can entertain and not feel embarrassed about it,” she says. The result is light and bright with an eclectic farmhouse vibe.

Alonso-Carmona positioned a cleanlined modern sofa across from the fireplace and softened it with an armful of pillows. A pair of gray chairs with nailhead trim, and square ottomans in a cowhide motif, round out the seating options. “It’s also soft place for the kids, so nobody’s running straight into the fireplace,” she says.

To outfit the existing shelves, Alonso-Carmona shopped the other rooms of the family’s home and repurposed some accessories that matched the farmhouse feel; she also added some new pieces, such as the curvy gold sculptures on the mantel. “Metal, geometric pieces don’t go out of style,” she says. “I always try to integrate them into any of the decors I do, traditional or ultramodern.” 86 SEPTEMBER 2019 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

PHOTO (ROOM) BY T. GREENE PHOTOGRAPHY

Alonso-Carmona whitewashed the original tan stone fireplace and replaced the original smaller mantel with this chunkier reclaimed wooden beam.

“I wanted to bring in a rug that was very forgiving to kids and animals but would still look lush and beautiful,” Alonso-Carmona says. This woven sisal and wool rug is “fairly indestructible—it won’t absorb any liquids or things of that nature.”

The Big IDea

The key to consistent and sustainable economic development is understanding how startups, innovative brands and vibrant downtowns attract and retain world-class talent and drive healthy growth. My goal, as Managing Director of Innovation DuPage, is to identify new economic development opportunities in the greater DuPage region. Innovation DuPage (ID) offers entrepreneurs a roadmap for transforming ideas into viable commercial ventures. There is an intentionality to the process that enables entrepreneurs to efficiently build a startup by searching for product/market fit rather than blindly executing on assumptions. Startup founders receive guidance from vetted mentors while they craft a scalable business model, define their value proposition and collect customer insights; therein enhancing their unfair advantage in the marketplace. We are creating a safe environment for entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds; where uniquely qualified teams are nurtured as their minimum viable projects (MVP) develop into flourishing businesses. ID connects novel thinking to a solid infrastructure of resources available throughout the entrepreneurial ecoverse. Tapping into the power of “we” forges partnerships that strengthen the entire community. Through strategic partnerships with Argonne National Laboratory, Choose DuPage and College of DuPage we are showcasing DuPage County’s economic vitality to the world. These significant differentiators are accelerating regional growth.

The Kahlo Mystique

When a Billion is Not Enough In 2021, the attention of the world –scratch that– the universe, will be fixated on DuPage County as Argonne powers up America’s first Exascale supercomputer. Exascale computing is capable of a billion billion (a quintillion) computations per second. The federal government is investing $5.7 billion into three Department of Energy (DOE) nextgeneration systems, applications and supporting software; this includes $500 million for Argonne to launch the first system, dubbed Aurora. Exascale is critical to advancements in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data visualization and machine learning. The US, China, Europe and Japan are currently engaged in a supercomputer race. Aurora will enable the US to advance its position in revolutionary technological development, scientific discovery, innovative healthcare, efficient energy and national security. This is an unrivaled opportunity for economic development. If. We. Plan. For. It.

From Frida to Exascale With the world squarely focused on the DuPage region over the next two years, we have an unparalleled opportunity to create evocative growth in our community. Frida will engage her admirers in a fixed gaze while Aurora draws the eyes of the innovation ecoverse as the Nation’s first Exascale system comes online. There is much more to share about Frida and Aurora in the coming months. Just wait until we start discussing Extreme-scale Scientific Software Stacks…I’ll bring the wine, we’ll make an evening of it.

Leadership and investment from College of DuPage (COD) brought the vision of ID to life. COD is now earning national recognition for the 2020 Frida Kahlo exhibit coming to the McAninch Arts Center.

P.S. If you are working on a startup and want to connect to the entrepreneurial support services of Innovation DuPage, reach out to me at ID@InnovationDuPage.org.

Frida Kahlo is arguably the most famous female artist of the 20th century, an international feminist icon and a shining symbol of strength and empowerment. In the summer of 2020, an exclusive exhibition of 26 original Frida Kahlo works and 150 digital images showcasing her life will be on loan from the Dolores Olmeda Museum in Mexico. The MAC’s Cleve Carney Art Gallery will transform into an immersive museum experience with a childrens’ area, garden exhibit and historical timeline.

Until next time remember...

The reach and gravitational pull of this exhibit cannot be overstated. It is the largest Frida Kahlo collection to grace the Chicago area in the last 40 years. Estimates of the economic impact range from $8 to $13 million. 535 Duane Street, Suite 100.

Glen Ellyn, IL 60137

“Genius doesn’t fade just because we stopped watching.” Travis Linderman has served as director for three venture incubators prior to his selection as Managing Director of Innovation DuPage. He founded a startup with Princeton University, secured venture capital backing, scaled rapidly and enjoyed a successful IP acquisition. Travis has spearheaded capital campaigns that have raised over $600 million for technology development.

ENCORE

THOMAS RHETT The country superstar showcases his diverse musical sensibility By Mark Loehrke GENRE LABELS I’m always trying to figure out where country music is heading, and this record (Center Point Road) has that perfect balance of pop-leaning progressive and the songwriting side, which is the truest side. If you record in a genre, then you are recording in a box and that’s not how music was supposed to be made. There are a lot of things on here that are pop and hip-hop influenced. GETTING PERSONAL I never in a million years thought I’d be writing records like I am now. After my first record, there weren’t many songs that were personal about me, because I didn’t know that it was OK to do that—it really wasn’t until about “Die a Happy Man,” [that I did] and I was still nervous to put that song out. But when I saw what it did, it really opened a lot of doors to say, “Hey, maybe if I do write personally then this will really resonate with a lot of people out there.” SCREEN BREAK I think the thing to do in country music these days is to have a gigantic video screen, a bunch of lights, and then play a bunch of your music videos behind your songs. But I’ve noticed a lot of fans start to just watch the music video rather than watching the show. So we’re not going to do video screens—period—this year. We’re going to make the biggest light show anybody’s ever seen. We’ll make it like an event, and like every song has its own unique experience to it. September 14 at United Center 1901 W.
