Still, for at least the dining aspect, things have remained the same for much of the past century for this space on the south side of Main Street between the old Emporium Building and what is now one of the island’s ubiquitous T-shirt shops. For an almost uninterrupted run since the 1930s, Nantucketers and island guests have turned to 38 — and, oddly, 40 — Main St. to dine. For a time, they even turned out to bowl there.

The Even Keel Café closed its door Columbus Day weekend, after nearly a decade in a building with an odd address that was once described as “uncomfortable” on Main Street.

Even Keel closes latest chapter at 38/40 Main Street BY

T

he Even Keel Café closed its door Columbus Day weekend, after nearly a decade in a building with an odd address that was once described as “uncomfortable” on NANTUCKET Main Street. Still, for at least the dining aspect, things have remained the same for much of the past century for this space on the south side of Main Street between the old Emporium Building and what is now one of the island’s ubiquitous T-shirt shops. For an almost uninterrupted run since the 1930s, Nantucketers and island guests have turned to 38 – and, oddly, 40 – Main St. to dine. For a time, they even turned out to bowl there.

Past like present An ad on the front page of the June 17, 1937 issue of the Madaket Free Press for the Modern Café at 38 Main St. reads: “We specialize in Shore Dinners, Steaks and Chops. Booth and Fountain Service. Catering a Specialty.” In the Sept. 22 issue of the Inquirer and Mirror, a similar ad ran, proclaiming among other items, the return of two-for-one dinner entrees at the Even Keel.

she had run since 1989. Before the Espresso Café, there was the Sweet Shop and Soda Parlour, which opened in 1968. A newspaper review in June 29, 1972, described the spacious rear patio to be Even Keel, continued on page 17

the Captain of the Essex on the voyage prior to her being sunk by a sperm whale. Ben moved off the island as a child, but “Big Palma,” as he was known, insisted that his wife and three daughters spend at least part of every summer on Nantucket. He wanted them to grow to love the place as he did, and he figured that the best way to accomplish that was to have them experience it for themselves. For their first few visits, the family stayed at the Sea Cliff Inn, but Russell soon found himself wanting a home of his very own. One day, according to the family stories, Big Palma and his family loaded into a horse-drawn carriage, and headed west out of town. Russell’s thinking was that when the horse stopped, it would be a sign that he was where he was supposed to be. So westward the horse walked, all the way out what is today Cliff Road towards Dionis Beach. Past Capaum Pond, the horse finally got tired and stopped, so Ben Russell decided that that spot would be the site of his family’s home. He arranged to buy seven acres from the farmer who owned it, and that was that. That horse had a nose for real estate if nothing else, as he’d chosen to take his rest in as dramatic and beautiful a setting as one could hope to find on Nantucket. At the edge of the North Shore, high above the water, Ben Russell was standing in what would become the home’s side yard. Looking north from that vantage point, a wide swatch of sandy beach and behind that, nothing but an endless expanse of ocean. It was to be quite the building site. It was to become the site of Westcliff, one of the island’s last great homes from a truly bygone era. Completed in 1931, the “Big House” had 14 bedrooms and a palatial downstairs. Russell had served as the architect in designing the house, and he had angled it 15 degrees off true north. Two theories exist as to why he chose to do that, as opposed to building it parallel with the beach in front of the home. One theory is that he wanted it so that every room would have a 12

view of the water; the other theory is that the angle allowed for the downstairs sun porch to catch the summer sunset perfectly. The house was named Westcliff only because the name that Russell had originally wanted — Dionis — was taken by his neighbor. Sally Nash recalled that the Harris family was building a house nearby, and they, too, wanted to name their house Dionis. The only fair solution the two families could come up with was that the first house to be completed got the name. The Harris house was the first to be completed, and it retains the name Dionis to this day. As an historical footnote, though, it also retains the same partial cellar that allowed the builder to get it finished while Russell was laboring over a complete and water-tight cellar under his home. The Big House, however, was only one of four buildings on the property. There was also a beach house, where beach-goers were required to shower prior to coming into the Big House if they’d been swimming in the ocean; there was “The Little House,” also known as the east cottage, which served as a guest house; and there was a scale model of the Old Mill, which housed the water pump and later became another guest accommodation. A generation later, the family added another building – the west cottage. The construction of the home utilized only the best materials available, and to this day, contractors who have performed work on the house have been amazed by the quality of the materials used and the craftsmanship employed by the original builders. And that original construction featured a few stories, too. Whitey Willauer, a grandson of Ben Russell, recalled that his grandmother frowned on her husband’s enjoyment of a drink here and there, so another interior feature of the house was that Ben could relax in the den downstairs with a perfect view of the majestic staircase descending from above. That view afforded him the time he needed to hide the evidence of his drink before his wife got to the ground floor and

discovered him. Willauer also mentioned that the sun porch featured a “secret closet” that only his grandfather knew about; the hidden chamber was a favored hiding spot when Russell wanted to keep his secret drink safe from prying eyes.

At his core, Ben Russell was as much of a kid at heart as anything else, and he loved nothing more than spending time with his many grandchildren. Sally Nash recalls her grandfather with a smile, laughing over stories of his antics at the dinner table. “We used to throw blueberries at each other across the table,� she remembered. “He was one of us. He’d throw it right back, as long as my grandmother didn’t see him.� Sally recalled him as a man with a constant smile and always ready with a joke for one of the grandkids. Those family-friendly antics were just part of life at Westcliff, as every summer, the extended Russell-NashWillauer components of the family would come to Nantucket. “It was such a great place for kids,� recalled Sally. “They could go out and play in the woods or they could go play on the beach. They had a great time.� And then there was the infamous Ghost of Westcliff. One morning, as Sally tells the story, the entire family awoke to find that all of their bikes had somehow been transported to the widow’s walk on the roof. Other mornings, children awoke in different beds from the ones they’d gone to sleep in the night before. Doors slammed, windows rattled, things went bump in the night. All of these strange and mysterious occurrences were chalked up to the harmless pranks of the Ghost of Westcliff. It took a couple of years for someone in the family to realize that incidents perpetrated by the house’s poltergeist seemed to cease completely when their cousin, Whitney Gifford, wasn’t around. Time marches on and waits for no man, however, and the expenses associated with owning the sprawling compound began to grow. Whitey told me that the family had first broached the idea of selling it about ten years ago, just before the September 11th attacks. They held onto it, though, and it turned out to be a pretty good decision, as the value of the home grew over the course of those ten years. And it gave Whitey – the last family member living in the home full-time – the chance to get his mind wrapped around the idea of selling the home. “It helped to ease any trauma I might have had with it,� he said. “I had time

to get used to the idea.� And Sally Nash, too, put a positive spin on the selling of Westcliff. “It’s a happy story for us as a family,� she said. “I believe in looking forward.� But that doesn’t mean she didn’t take a stroll down Memory Lane while cleaning out the house after the closing. “It opened up our stories and freed us up to enjoy and share them with each other,� she said of the process of clearing out the home’s interior furnishings. “My granddaughter asked me to walk her through the house when it was entirely cleaned out. And in each room, she’d ask me for a story about that room. The house is riddled with memories,� she said fondly. And there are many of us on Nantucket who, despite not being family, have plenty of memories of the place, too. My first time at Westcliff, I had no idea where I was going, as the invitation only said “Westcliff.� There was no street address, just a name. It was the sort of invitation that if you had to ask where that was, you probably weren’t supposed to be invited in the first place. But I found the place; like I said, you’ve got to really want to get there, and I really wanted to get there. And then there were the Thanksgiving parties that Whitey hosted every year. The annual event actually started out as a movie night hosted by Whitey and Sally’s grandmother, Sally Russell. She used to have dinner parties, at which she would “force her guests to watch her home movies,� as Sally Nash said. Russell’s daughter took that idea and modified it into a day-afterThanksgiving pot luck, with extended family coming in for the weekend. From there, it became Whitey’s Thanksgiving day lunch, and for so many of us, Thanksgiving on Nantucket will never be the same. But it’s not the end of the story of Westcliff. Not just yet. When the house was sold, the beach house and the west cottage were excluded from the sale, and Whitey will continue to live on the property, residing in the shadow of his childhood summer home. For me, that will help to ease the shock a little, knowing that at least there’s still a part of that original mischievous spirit floating around the property.

According to the review, “Nantucketers, resident and visitor alike, consume tremendous amounts of ice cream each summer and the Sweet Shop is ready for them and their appetites. The menu includes the favorite classic soda fountain treats such as banana splits and sundaes plus a few not so usual desserts such as coup aux marrons (candied chestnuts on ice cream), nesselrode Sunday, peach melba and pear helene.” The food link runs deeper still. According to Lothrop’s Nantucket Directory in 1919 and 1920, 38 Main St. held Cady’s Food and at 40 Main, the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. This directory of businesses and newspaper ads reveal that in 1935, Cady’s Food had become the Central Market and A & P Tea had given way to The Modern Café. A shift in theme followed The Modern Café. By 1946, 40 Main St. was home to Preston Manchester’s Nantucket Bowling Alley, which lasted until around 1949. A five-and-dime filled the space and was the last business to operate there before 1966 when the building was demolished to make room for the current structure.

History mysteries The original building at the site was constructed before 1892 and, according to the Historic District Commission’s Building Structure Inventory Form, was as a wooden building with a high-peaked roof. The building was razed and new one put in its place around 1910, according to the Historic American Buildings Survey written by Marie M. Coffin in 1967. For many years, there were two addresses – 38 and 40 Main St. – for the location of the Even Keel. While the Even Keel was listed at 40 Main St., punching that address into the town’s GIS system brings up nothing. The Even Keel appears instead at 38 Main.

NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

The five-and-dime likewise poses a conundrum: Its existence runs contrary to the HABS report, which says the building was empty and owned by Sherburne & Associates at the time. Another unexplained date in 38/40 Main’s history is that of an unknown newspaper photo clipping from the NHA dated as “?/195_”. It shows the new building, which HDC assistant administrator James Grieder calls a colonial revival. Part of the photo’s caption reads: “The new structure on Main Street Square, at the corner of Hussey

(later Barnes’) Court, has been subject for considerable comment in the town. It has no counterpart in Island architecture, and so cannot be a historical reconstruction, and appears to be a compromise between existing buildings in the business district and contemporary design. In any event, it has an unfortunate look of not being comfortable in its location.” For now, only the closed sign that hangs in the window will look uncomfortable in the location. That is, until a new owner takes over.
