BODY SURFING

A

MARK MATTOON PHOTO

skill that ocean beach lifeguards get by default, choosing this physically demanding cousin of surfing and boogie boarding should not be without some contemplation. You are one with a wave, literally, as long as you can get out to it on your own

LEARNING CURVE Half the battle is having the physical strength to swim out beyond the breaking waves and, treading water with fin-enhanced legs, jockey for position to swim after a wave. The other half is actually catching the wave and riding it in.

WHERE TO GO Ocean: Tom Nevers to Madaket.

GEAR UP Bathing suit and boogie boarding fins.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Low pressure system-driven swells from the south, including offshore tropical storms or hurricanes. That, combined with northerly winds — blowing offshore — make for nice, glassy smooth breaks.

WHY ME? Since frolicking in the waves is a rite of summer, pretty much everyone without a surfboard or boogie board charging into the surf on Nantucket’s south shore is body surfing back to the beach whether they know it or not. However, you’re out there because you’re strong enough to surf without a board and love doing it.

PERFECT FOR Waterman purists who want to use nothing but human locomotion — aided by fins — and human floatation to catch and ride waves.

August/September 2011

X-FACTOR Surfers and boogie boarders have their boards for floantation tethered to their legs by a leash and a Velcro cuff. You have a winter’s worth of pizza, beer and ice cream around your middle. And then there are the rip currents, tides and big waves with which to contend. Fitness and swimming ability is key. LESSONS & RENTALS You will need to learn as you go and read up on the sport after buying a good pair of fins at Force 5 Watersports, 6 Union St., 228-0700. Indian Summer Sports, 6 Broad St. Jetties Beach, 228-3632. The Sunken Ship, 12 Broad St., 228-9226.

BOOGIE BOARDING

S

urfing’s little brother, also called bodyboarding, means riding a foam board face down on the same waves that surfers live for and is one step up from bodysurfing. More the domain of younger wave riders, boogie boarders need less of a wave for riding and therefore can utilize smaller waves than surfers. WHERE TO GO Ocean: Tom Nevers to Madaket. Sound: Kick boarding use for children only. FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Low pressure system-driven swells from the south, including offshore tropical storms or hurricanes. That, combined with northerly winds — blowing offshore — make for very nice, glassy smooth breaks. PERFECT FOR Bodysurfers seeking a longer ride on larger waves, surfing hopefuls looking for a feel for paddling out and riding waves and adult children who just want to play in the south shore waves.

LEARNING CURVE Anyone who has ever bodysurfed or tried to can pick this up in the first try: lie on board, paddle out to waves, when suitable wave comes, turn around and paddle vigorously toward shore. GEAR UP Boogie board, fins, paddle gloves, wetsuit and/or rash guard, swim trunks and sunblock. WHY ME? Boogie boarding is simple, relatively cheap to get into, super easy to learn and provides instant gratification. X-FACTOR Nantucket’s surfers are relatively lax on wave and break protection, quite the opposite of many places on the West Coast and in Hawaii where surfers fiercely defend their local breaks. Boogie boarders, which surfers refer to as spongers, would do well not to cut off surfers, each other and anyone else trying to ride waves. If you see someone already going down a wave or just about to catch one, hang back and wait for the next one. LESSONS & RENTALS There are no boogie board rentals on the island, but boards and the necessary equipment at available at: Force 5 Watersports, 6 Union St., 228-0700. Indian Summer Sports, 6 Broad St. Jetties Beach, 228-3632. The Sunken Ship, 12 Broad St., 2289226.

FISHING

F

ishing in its many forms is as old as the human race. First a necessity for the Native Americans who arrived between 8,000 and 11,000 years ago and later, it’s a sport that pays scaly but yummy dividends. It’s almost impossible to make one’s way around the island without seeing signs of fishing on people’s clothing, car bumpers and racks, in grocery bags and on boats and wharves. Nantucket is an amazing spot for saltwater fishing — the active fisher has access to blues and stripers from beaches and boats, can fish for larger species well offshore, in the Canyons, on the edge of the Continental Shelf or can spend the day lazily angling for freshwater species. WHERE TO GO Harbor: All three Ponds: All of them. Ocean: Definitely. Sound: Yes.

ROB BENCHLEY PHOTO

CONDITIONS All over the map and species specific at the same time, but three hours before and after low tide is a widely followed rule.

WHY ME? Like quahogging, squid jigging and dangling poultry wings for crabs, there’s free delicious local food out in our waterways to be caught by the intrepid fisherman hungry for a taste of the island.

PERFECT FOR You name it. LEARNING CURVE You mean you’re dad didn’t teach you? Literally a national pastime in which old salts imbue the novices with basics, which are essentially casting the lure and reeling it in. For bluefish, cast out from shore as far as you can and reel in rapidly is about all you need to know. For striped bass, false albacore, bonito and Spanish mackerel — nuances of lure choice, reeling speed, lure placement, jerking the line and weather and tide need to be absorbed and practiced repeatedly. Pond fishing is learn-as-you-go. GEAR UP Rod, reel, pole, lures, hook remover, tackle box, beverages and patience. August/September 2011

X-FACTOR Seals, vagaries of weather, tides and water temperature, and levels of pollution in the harbors and ponds. An evening alone on the south shore, casting into the surf, can soothe the soul. LESSONS & RENTALS There are dozens of charter fishing boats and fishing guides operating out of Nantucket’s harbors — too numerous to list here. Get recommendations from the island’s four tackle shops. Nantucket Tackle Center (228-4081) at 41 Sparks Ave. Bill Fisher Tackle (2282261) at 127 Orange St. Brant Point Marine (228-6244) at 32 Washington St; and Cross Rip Outfitters at 228-4900. •

KAYAKING

W

ithout a boat, Nantucket’s harbors and ponds are inaccessible to all but the best swimmers. If you lack the desire to rent a powerboat to see the island’s amazing waterways, paddling a kayak is the coolest and most satisfying mode of water transport there is.Thank the Inuit people of the Arctic and the Aleuts of the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska for designing and building the first kayaks, which they used for hunting marine mammals and fishing. Fishing from a kayak is definitely an option in Nantucket waters, but learn the kayaking part first. WHERE TO GO Harbors: All of them. Ponds: Sesachacha, Hummock, Miacomet, Long, Coskata and Maxcy ponds. Ocean: Yes for intermediates to experts. Sound: Advanced beginners through experts; Along the outer edge of Coatue close to shore and along the north shore between the west jetty and Eel Point, out to Tuckernuck and Muskeget Islands

PETER B. BRACE PHOTO

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Ideally, calm to winds 5-10 mph during the summer and early fall.

WHY ME? You often use a bike on land to get around the island, and kayaking is a natural water-borne extension of your lifestyle.

PERFECT FOR Eco-tourists and those seeking a view of the island, the sunset, stars or moonrise from the water.

X-FACTOR Exponentially, many more people have the same idea, but using commercial and recreational powerboats. Picking the safest, traffic- and current-free route beforehand and knowing the tide and where you’re going is prudent.

LEARNING CURVE If you can paddle a canoe or a row a dinghy, you can paddle a kayak on the first try. GEAR UP Kayak, paddle, personal floatation device, boat pump, paddle float and a whistle are the basics. Wear a bathing suit and or wetsuit, water shoes or rubber sandals and a waterproof shell, warm clothing, food and water.

KITEBOARDER

ALENA DERBY DE PAZ

Oversea, Nantucket Island $17,800,000

small community has grown over the past few years on island around a sport that is almost as thrilling to watch as it is to do.The sport is kiteboarding, and it captivates beachgoers lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the action. Pilates instructor Alena Derby de Paz is an active summer participant in the kiteboarding community that, she says, is otherwise comprised of around two dozen year-round faithfuls and swells significantly in the summer months. An adventure sport enthusiast, Derby de Paz first got into kiteboarding five years ago, while searching for her next adrenalin rush. “I had been really into snowboarding and skiing and had taken some paragliding lessons, “ she says. “So, the first time I saw a kite with a board attached to it, I was hooked.” She began taking lessons in Cape Hatteras, N.C.“My first lesson was hard, and it hurt,” she says. But she kept at it, kiteboarding yearround in the waters around Charleston, S.C. in the winter and Nantucket in the summer.

Listing Brokers

Meg Ruley | Jane B. Miller Licensed in MA

In July and August, Derby de Paz can be found with the group launching from Pocomo Point and kiting across the open water to near Bass Point, off Coatue. In September, when winds get stronger, the kiters venture to Madaket, Madequecham for the waves, and Jetties Beach, depending on the wind. “It’s completely exhilarating. There is nothing else out there like it,” says Derby de Paz.

KITEBOARDING

P

robably the youngest of all these water sports. Although using kites for power on land and water goes back to the 1800s, kitesurfing is also a hybrid of several sports including boat-towing sports including waterskiing and wakeboarding, kite flying and skydiving. Employing a giant kite-like, elongated airfoil attached to harness for power, kiteboarders traverse the water on a board similar to the unidirectional wakeboard. Controlling the kite with a metal control bar attached to the kite by its lines, kiteboarders rocket across the wind, upwind and downwind. Nantucket’s kiteboarding community loves the waters in and around the island because when the wind is blowing, there’s always a great place to kite, especially at Pocomo Point. WHERE TO GO Harbors: Pocomo Point, off the Jetties, Madaket Harbor and over to the east end of Tuckernuck Island Ocean: Intermediate to expert along the south shore. Sound: Intermediate to expert on North shore of the island and on the outside of Coatue. FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Kitesurfers like to launch from Pocomo Point because no matter what direction the wind is blowing, they can ride their boards back and forth to Coatue and up and down the harbor. PERFECT FOR Waterskiers, wake-boarders, knee-boarders and all other water-sport junkies practiced at riding some form of board over water at high speeds. LEARNING CURVE Actually billed as easier to learn than windsurfing because use of the kite or, airfoil, is easily taught on land. Also, recovery from water spills happens quickly with the kite pulling riders up and out of the water. On-the-water turns are relatively simple to master. GEAR UP Bring your own gear — kite, harness and board, as there is no place to rent on the island. WHY ME? Your first and only skydiving adventure left you craving that soaring feeling but without the hard landing. Flying over waves, flat water and into the air is calling your name. X-FACTOR The cost of equipment can be prohibitively expensive. Rent or borrow it first. Avoid winds blowing offshore. LESSONS & RENTALS Currently, there are no kitesurfing lessons and rentals offered on Nantucket.

QUAHOG-DIGGING

O

n land and in our waters, there is so much local food to harvest. You could almost find half your grocery list without entering any of the grocery stores. Quahogs should be one of those items, as they are everywhere in the harbor and so easy to get. Popular raw as cherrystones served with cocktail sauce, stuffed and baked at medium size and the larger ones minced for chowder and fish stews, quahiogs are easy to find, typically located barely below the surface of the sandy harbor bottom or partially sticking above. While raking for them between Coatue and First Point, and off Monomoy, you’ll quickly become adept at feeling them with your bare feet. WHERE TO GO Harbors: Nantucket, Madaket and Tuckernuck. Ponds: Coskata. CONDITIONS Low tide or thigh-deep water during the summer. PERFECT FOR Makers and eaters of chowder, stuffed quahogs, cherrystones on the half shell and steamed quahogs, and New England seafood junkies in general. LEARNING CURVE Knowing the legal size is about all there is to it, along with feeling them with your rake or your toes, and bringing them to surface. GEAR UP Get a recreational shellfish license from the Marine & Coastal Resources Department, $25 for locals, $100 for non-residents. And right next door at Brant Point Marine, 32 Washington St., 228-6244, where you can pick up a quahog rake, wire basket, and advice on where to go and how to dig. WHY ME? Free shellfish right out in the harbor? Warm waters to wade in? Do you need another reason for this timeless summertime activity? X-FACTOR Shellfish closures.

SAILING

MARK MATTOON PHOTO

Y

ou can’t swing a bowline around Nantucket’s waterfront without hitting someone who sails or at least knows someone who does. As synonymous with Nantucket as fishing, sailing should be a required island skill. Already a spring sport at Nantucket High School, sailing is older than European settlement of the island, which certainly relied on sail power for the first 27 Nantucketers to get here in 1659.

WHERE TO GO Harbors: All three Ponds: Smaller boats, dinghies with sails and, see Nat Philbrick’s book, “Second Wind” on sailfish sailing in the ponds. Ocean: Yes Sound: Yes FAVORABLE CONDITIONS 10 to 15 mph in Nantucket Sound is the preferable wind speed for cruising without too much work.A little less in the harbor where smaller boats can get around well on low winds. 52

Nantucket Property Journal

PERFECT FOR Mariners and other seafaring wannabes who want a tiller in one hand and the main sheet in the other while charging around the Opera House Cup’s triangular course in the Sound, sauntering downwind for a picnic on Coskata or gently drifting out on a calm evening for the sunset.

WHY ME? Inhaling engine fumes is part of flying/driving to the island and around it, but it doesn’t have to be for your on-the-water experience. Seeing the harbors and Nantucket Sound while hearing only water against the hull, with wind ruffling your sails and smelling the briny perfume of saltwater makes Nantucket for you.

LEARNING CURVE With Nantucket Community Sailing, both yacht clubs and several other outfits committed to sharing their love of wind-powered boating, basic sailing skills are as easy to acquire and absorb as mosquitoes in Madaket.

X-FACTOR Learn in the harbor, practice in the sound, but mind the currents, shoals and other boaters.

GEAR UP Sailboat, personal floatation device, map of the island harbors, food, water, sunblock and appropriate, weatherdependent clothing.

SURF KAYAKING

A

hybrid of river kayaking and surfing, paddling a kayak that can either resemble a whitewater river rapids kayak or be a thicker version of surfboard with three skegs on the bottom, foot loops, thigh straps and a concave surface for your butt on top, surf kayaking is, for the skilled, a fantastic way to catch waves quickly and get longer rides.

WHERE TO GO Ocean: Tom Nevers to Madaket. FAVORABLE CONDITIONS An offshore wind and nice swells are ideal for surf kayaking. If you’re looking for a less rigorous sea kayaking experience, then head out when the water is calm, the current is fine, and the wind is not too strong.

PERFECT FOR River junkies with bumper stickers on their Subarus reading “Life is a Mountain, Not a Beach” and anyone else who would rather ride waves sitting down. LEARNING CURVE Steep. First learn to handle a river kayak in rapids or a sea kayak in choppy waves and strong currents, and then seek out an experienced kayaker to paddle out with.

X-FACTOR Paddling in the surf means the ability to get out well away from shore where fog, tidal currents, large gray seals, powerboats and now, sharks, can make your surf kayaking experience an interesting one. Also, cutting off surfers, boogie boarders and others vying for waves is bad juju. LESSONS & RENTALS Force 5 Watersports, 6 Union St., 228-0700. Madaket Marine, 228-1163, at 20 North Cambridge St.

GEAR UP A river kayak, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, personal flotation device with a whistle attached to it and a wetsuit or rash guard. WHY ME? You live in the mountains but spend time on the coast and the spring runoff was just too quick this year. Or surfing is too much work for so few waves and such short rides. August/September 2011

SKIMBOARDING

B

orn in Southern California at Laguna Beach where so many other ocean board sports thrive, lifeguards invented skimboarding as a way to get down the beaches quickly. Although the epicenter of the sport is widely considered to be Dewey Beach, Del. where the East Coast Skimboarding Championships are held in mid-August, Nantucket’s south shore rivals that Delaware beach with steep enough swash zones for good momentum and ample breaking waves with good water depth for all the tricks and fewer wipeouts. On the north shore, you can practice your craft in a flatter, tamer setting.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Waves breaking on the beach.

WHERE TO GO Harbor: Yes, Jetties Beach. Ponds: Maybe Sesachacha and Miacomet. Ocean: Tom Nevers to Madaket. Sound: Eel Point to Jetties Beach.

WHY ME? You’re not ready for riding the big waves off shore, so pulling “ollies” and “shove-its” on the wave wash safely at water’s edge is a great way to ease into the tricks you’ll eventually be ripping once you start your surfing career.

54

Nantucket Property Journal

PERFECT FOR Surfers-in-training working on their balance and wave-riding skills, grommets and those who prefer playing in the waves closer to shore. LEARNING CURVE Board riders on all mediums — water, asphalt and snow— will feel at home on a skimboard. All others should watch, learn and ask. GEAR UP Skimboard, bathing suit and rash guard (optional).

• August/September 2011

X-FACTOR The film of water left by the receding wave that’s just broken on which you’ll be skimming over naturally follows the contours of the beach, but the unevenness and widely varying grade of Nantucket beaches can cause wipeouts and injury. SQUID JIGGING

L

iterally like shooting fish in a barrel, jigging for squid is as easy as dangling a fluorescent yellow, orange or green lure with its sharp spines jutting upward and outward from a length of monofilament into the harbor water. The squid are attracted to the lights on the town pier and other wharves around the island. When they see the lure and swarm around it, a simple upward jerking motion is all you need to bring home the ingredients for calamari salad, fried, sautéed, pickled or baked squid. Or, use them for bait to catch Stripers.

WHERE TO GO Harbor: Town pier or Steamboat, Straight and Swain’s Wharves on Nantucket Harbor.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Nighttime during the summer. PERFECT FOR Curious children and their parents, fishermen needing bait and hungry home cooks seeking a taste of local seafood. LEARNING CURVE Blue-claw crab fishers will have no trouble. Newbies need only know how to watch others do it. GEAR UP Find squid jigs at island tackle shops and Brant Point Marine. Attach them to about 20 feet of fishing monofilament line and wrap the line around a wooden dowel or stick and, voilà, instant squid jig rig.

WHY ME? Island restaurants can’t approach the savory level of delectable calamari you’re going to make with a bucket full of Atlantic long-finned squid. Nor can they make it so cheaply. X-FACTOR Squid spray their indelible dark ink when agitated. Under water, the ink, clouding it for an instant, allows the squid to escape becoming a meal. On land, think tie-dye accident. Nantucket’s police roust squid-jiggers from wharves when they get too crowded or in response to complaints of inked boats. Dress appropriately. In other words, squid-jig in clothing that you don’t care about. LESSONS & RENTALS Monkey see, monkey do.

hat will they think of next? Actually, stand-up paddling is nothing new. Resuscitated by big-wave surfers Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama in the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki began using outrigger canoe paddles to paddle their surfboards out to take photos of people learning to surf. Today, thanks to Laird and Dave, SUP, as it’s nicknamed, is a recreational as well as a competitive distance paddling sport and new surfing competition category in many coastal locales. WHERE TO GO Harbor: All three. Ponds: All of them. Ocean: Yes. Sound: Yes.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Flat, calm water PERFECT FOR Surfers learning to use a paddle while surfing, and everyone else looking for a new, chill way to see the harbors, ponds and sound, and to tighten up their abdominal muscles. LEARNING CURVE Standing up and staying up is 70 percent of the process. Developing your core muscles to maintain your balance and help your arms and shoulders move the paddle is the other 30. GEAR UP Stand-up surfboard, paddle and personal flotation device.

ustin Schaeffer began surfing on the beaches of Nantucket on a six-foot Rainbow when he was barely seven years old. The board was short by a grown man’s standards, but big for a first-grader. “The first day I took it out I could barely carry it — it almost blew me over,” he says. “But it was a great board.” He remembers it vividly: “purple rails, grey bag with red canvas straps.”

SURFER

As Schaeffer grew up on the water, so did Nantucket’s surfing scene. According to Schaeffer the community has grown an estimated 10 times what it was over the past 15 years. By the PILE time he reached college, he found a real desire from the from beachgoers to learn the sport. “People kept approaching me and asking for lessons,” he says. So, he decided to spearhead his own operation, which he called ’Sconset Surf. With a few friends hired to join him, Schaeffer ran Sconset Surf for seven years, stopping only when he accepted a job in Boston after graduating from college.

JUSTIN SCHAEFFER BY MORGAN

Schaeffer first got into surfing for the same reason most children do anything. “All the older kids were doing it,” he said.“It was like watching the varsity team from the stands. I wanted to get involved.” It wasn’t always easy. With no surf school and a small surfing community, Justin largely taught himself, struggling for two years, he says, until he started to see real improvement.

With his time on the island now limited to weekends and occasional vacations, Schaeffer still makes time to hit the surf — but not necessarily for the killer waves that Nantucket beaches have to offer.“The surfing, itself, is fun,” he says, “But the best part is about the people. It’s like a brotherhood out there — a great thing to be a part of.”

Schaeffer credits those early years with teaching him patience for weather and waves, but also with forcing his maturity. “It made me grow up,” he says.“When you are on the water, age doesn’t matter. A 10 year old talks to a 20 year old.A 20 year old talks to a 40 year old. As a kid, you start thinking of yourself as older.” THARON ANDERSON PHOTO

ith its roots in Hawaii and its branches extending all around the world, wherever there’s a good break, surfers will paddle out. Nantucket’s surfing community surfs yearround with many traveling to surfing spots in the off season, that include Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the South Pacific. Nantucket’s south shore beaches are the perfect summertime venue for learning to surf, honing skills and playing in the sun and waves — a complete package for soothing any workday ill. WHERE TO GO Ocean: From Tom Nevers to Madaket. FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Low pressure system-driven swells from the south, including offshore tropical storms or hurricanes. That, combined with northerly winds — blowing offshore — make for very nice, glassy smooth breaks. PERFECT FOR Surfers of all levels. LEARNING CURVE Relatively long and steep, as surfing is another water sport grounded in balance, especially when popping up on the board once you catch a wave and while standing on the board. Upper body strength is vital for paddling out through breaking waves and for paddling vigorously to catch waves. GEAR UP Surfboard, surf wax, wetsuit and sunblock. WHY ME? The feeling one gets while surfing is an indescribable high, but there are the bonuses of the intense physical workout and deep tan. It’s all about learning how to “operate in the present.” X-FACTOR Surfing requires patience, physical strength and dedication. But once you master it, the only other challenges to worry about are the jellyfish, strong rip currents and other surfers competing for waves at prized breaks. Take a lesson from the year-round surf pack already out there and give way when you see someone is just about to catch a wave or already has. On-the-water courtesy wins friends and can save your life.

WAKEBOARDING

illed as the natural evolution of snowboarding but on the water, wakeboarding came into being in the late 1980s when several people on different parts of the planet dreamed up similar ideas. Originating in Scotland and called “Skurfing,” extreme sports pro Lochlan Snowie loaned his Skurf board to Jeff Darby and some friends in Queensland, Australia who continued the evolution of this new water board. Tony Finn later put into commercial production the early wakeboard. Around the same time, fellow Aussie and surfboard shaper/inventor Bruce McKee and Mitchell Ross invented the first massproduced plastic “Skurfboard”.And in 1983, Howard Jacobs of Jacksonville, Fla. modified a short surfboard with windsurfer foot straps bolted onto them.

WHERE TO GO Sound and Nantucket and Madaket harbors.

GEAR UP Wakeboard, towrope, swim trunks and personal flotation device.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Like waterskiing, the flatter the better, but small waves foster more tricks.

WHY ME? Being dragged around behind a powerboat on skis — one or two — is putting you to sleep, and you want the versatility of movement on the water and in the air above it that wakeboarding offers. You’re fearless and need another adrenaline rush.

PERFECT FOR Single-ski waterskiers who want to advance their acrobatic water repertoire to a level unobtainable on waterskis and anyone who already skateboards, surfs and/or snowboards who want to explore yet another board sport medium. LEARNING CURVE Can you water ski? If yes, then there’s a brief learning curve. If not, prepare to splash down a lot.

X-FACTOR Like all towed water board sports, respect your physical limits, where you’re wakeboarding and the water temperature. Be at one with the boat driver and comfortable with their wakeboarding speed. LESSONS & RENTALS You’re Up Watersports, 508-332-0557.

ry not to visualize 12 acrobatic stunt water-skiers stacked three rows high being pulled behind one boat. Rather, set your mind to a flat Nantucket Harbor about an hour before sunset and the scent of beach roses and the ocean wafting through the early evening air. On one ski or two, you carve across the glassy warm water and, not seeing another boat at all up around Wauwinet, trace the shoreline from Pocomo to Coskata. That dream realized for you in island waters probably barely approximates the first-time euphoria Ralph Samuelson of Lake City, Minnesota felt when he invented the sport in late June of 1922.

WINDSURFER NATE MERRILL BY MORGAN PILE

“I don’t really do a lot of organized sports, says Nate Merrill. “Windsurfing is what I do to release energy and zone out, while being plugged into the waves and the weather. Director of Nantucket Community Sailing’s Jetties program, Merrill is an avid sailor and self-proclaimed lover of all wind sports. But if you ask him to pick sailing versus windsurfing, he may chose windsurfing.“It is a much cleaner form of sailing, he says.“There is less clutter. It is much faster and free.

It’s no wonder Nate is so enthusiastic about the sport. He first started when he was just four or five, hanging off of his mother’s board while she surfed the waves of Woods Hole and Nantucket and picked it up on his own “a little later. Over the years, Merrill has windsurfed at dozens of beaches across globe. He counts among his favorite wind and surf locations Metunick, RI, Davenport, MA and, of course, Nantucket. Throughout his career, Merrill became an expert in executing the wide range of activity that windsurfing offers, including jumps and “front loops and “back loops. He also constantly seeks out what is called planing: the act of skimming the surface of the water while under sail. Planing is extremely difficult to achieve while sailing, but it is one of the true joys of windsurfing, which is another component that Merrill believes sets the sport apart. “It is something to aspire to while sailing, and windsurfing makes it easy, he says.

WINDSURFING

MARK MATTOON PHOTO

indsurfing, also called sail boarding and boardsailing, has only been around since 1968. Two southern Californians, sailor Jim Drake and surfer Hoyle Schweitzer, merged a surfboard with a sail by mounting it on a board modified with a universal joint that allowed steering in any direction. By the 1970s, Schweitzer was mass-producing his and Drake’s windsurfer. Today, windsurfing is a billion-dollar industry with competitions held worldwide and as an Olympic sport. On Nantucket, with its fivemile-long harbor, warm waters and moderate winds, conditions for beginners and experts alike are ideal. WHERE TO GO Harbors: Pocomo Point, Wauwinet, Jetties Beach and Madaket. Ponds: All skill levels in Sesachacha Pond. Ocean: Experts only off the south shore for wave jumping. Sound: All skill levels off Nantucket’s north shore.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Requires winds blowing at least 5-10 knots, 5.7-11.5 mph required. Nantucket’s prevailing winds are from the southwest during the summer, and these winds are frequently 1015 mph or higher. The higher winds occur with some regularity, keeping experts and those advancing in their skills happy. PERFECT FOR All water sport lovers who want exercise while seeing the island from the water. With some equipment makers producing child-size windsurfers, the age range starts at around five years old. LEARNING CURVE Long and steep if balance is an issue. Core strength and knowledge of sailing basics are must-haves.

GEAR UP Since equipment can be pricey, lessons and rental boards are the way to go at first. At the bare minimum, you will need swimwear and/or a rash guard or light wetsuit, depending on water temperature, life preserver and water shoes. WHY ME? Because you love the thrill, freedom and simplicity of skimming across warm Nantucket waters. X-FACTOR Balance and some reasonable level of physical fitness are key to this hybrid sport. Each novice reacts differently to steering a surfboard fitted with a small sail on sometimes choppy waters. Crowded harbors can add to that challenge. nvented by surfers and formally recognized in 1988 when USA Water Ski gave it its own sports division, kneeboarding is a different animal from the stand-up boat-towing water sports. Kneeboarders kneel on their board, which they’re strapped onto, while being pulled by a powerboat.Yes, all kinds of tricks are possible along with simply being hauled around by the boat or doing slalom turns. arasailing is a recent addition to Nantucket’s water activities. Its roots are grounded in France where the parasail controllable parachute was invented in 1961. However, unlike the aforementioned watersports in which participants are able to use their arms, legs and feet or, at least in one instance, their hips (while kneeling), to maneuver around in the water, in tubing you are at mercy of the boat and the waves. If you’re strong enough, you’ll at least be able to hold on tightly enough to jump some waves and maybe roll over a few times. 66

KNEEBOARDING

Nantucket Property Journal

PERFECT FOR Older children, teenagers and younger adults who have proven themselves on all the other forms of watersports involving powerboats, tow ropes and flat water.

LEARNING CURVE Get over the fact that you are kneeling on a board blasting at high speeds over the water, find your specific balance on this unique board and you’ll have a ball fairly quickly. Or, you’ll do loworbit, face-first cannonballs several dozen times until you get it. GEAR UP Kneeboard, personal flotation device, tow rope and powerboat.

PARASAILING PERFECT FOR Summer revelers seeking a water sport experience that’s divergently unique among all others offered on the island, and those who want unforgettable water views.

LEARNING CURVE Trust is really all you need. Once strapped into the harness, the parasail, wind and boat driver do all the work. GEAR UP Personal flotation devise, bathing suit and a waterproof or water-resistant camera.

TUBING

WHY ME? Getting out of the water during summer on Nantucket to do anything other than eat, go to the Brewery and sleep is as sacrilegious as ordering a Turkey Terrific from Provisions without the cranberry sauce. Kneeboarding is one more awesome reason for shriveled fingers. X-FACTOR Good flexibility in your knees, which — it goes without saying — should be injury-free, and a willingness to wipe out regularly until you master it doesn’t hurt either. LESSONS & RENTALS You’re Up Watersports, 508-332-0557.

WHY ME? You can’t wait to go skydiving again, but this will just have to do until you can. Jumping out of an airplane was too much for you, and parasailing seems like a safer mode of dangling from something approaching a parachute. X-FACTOR Batophobes need not apply. You will be high above Nantucket Sound while being towed by a powerboat. LESSONS & RENTALS You’re Up Watersports; 508-332-0557.

WHERE TO GO Harbor and Sound, between Eel Point and the west jetty.

WHY ME? Because it’s pure, unskilled, easy fun that’ll cool you off and make you laugh.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS Flat water for easy tubin’ and choppy seas for challenging, bumpy rides.

X-FACTOR Learning to love a bumpy water ride on your chest while tightly gripping handles in a free weights curling position, with your legs flailing around on the water behind you.

PERFECT FOR Children, ages seven to 100. LEARNING CURVE Next to nil. GEAR UP One Gore-Tex covered giant inner tube with handles made for tubing.

• August/September 2011

LESSONS & RENTALS: Find your own tubes at Force 5 Watersports at 6 Union St., 228-0700 and the Sunken Ship at 12 Broad St., 228-9226. Get lessons and take rides with You’re Up Watersports, 508-332-0557.

This secluded home is set back from the road and located a short distance from town and south shore beaches. The spacious fenced in yard includes mature flowering trees and the private backyard offers a patio as well as a potting shed. A small garage/boat house is situated in the front yard.

Barn Stages

This appealing home in the coveted Cisco area is turn-key with a lot of personality. The house has been updated and well maintained (with central A/C, a high end kitchen and a new cottage) while still keeping the feeling of a classic beach house. Further, the landscaping and interior details exude a relaxed feeling. A large separate studio and loft were added in 2004 and offers plenty of extra space in a private setting. There is a comfortable deck and expansive lawn on this ½ acre property. The property abuts conservation land to further add to it’s $2,100,000 private setting.

In-Town on India Street

This unique summer home is right in the heart of the Old Historic District overlooking the Lily Pond Conservation area. The house, originally a barn, was converted in the 1940's to a summer in-the-round theatre until the 1960's. In 1977 the present owner purchased the property and has done a number of improvements over the years, yet the charm of the open theatre detailing can still be seen within its interior. The large back porch with extended deck is a welcoming sanctuary. This charming property is expandable and has the ability to add a second dwelling.
