aroline Ellis is a nurturing soul, clear to see by the lush gardens she tends around her Quaise home she shares with her husband Doug, daughter Sarah visiting from New York, family dog Otis, cat Bella, and outside, chickens and four feral kitties she feeds. But in the public domain, her caring is evident from Caroline’s widespread community involvement. The Ellis’s began coming to Nantucket from Brookline, Mass. in 1961 and spent summers here, mainly in ‘Sconset, until they moved permanently to the island in 1996. Shortly after settling in, Caroline joined the ‘Sconset Civic Association and then became a member of The ‘Sconset Trust, whose board recently honored her for her dedication. She joined the Nantucket Garden Club and went on to become one of the first board members of the Nantucket Preservation Trust, which promotes preservation easements to protect the exteriors and interiors of historic structures in perpetuity. She also joined the board of Landmark House, where she is still actively involved and working to improve and expand the residence gardens, Ellis, continued on page 14

From the whaling ships of centuries past to the scallopers of the present, Nantucketers have long hauled their livelihoods from the ocean. In the age of tourism, dollars wash ashore with visitors eager to enjoy the island’s character – along with its shops, restaurants, inns, boutiques, golf courses and, certainly, its expansive sandy beaches.

antucket is as tied to the ocean as the ocean is to it. The bond is indelible and intrinsic. The ocean dictates the island’s survival, not only in its waves and currents and storms eroding or adding to Nantucket as a landmass, but also in the way it supports the island as a viable place to live, work and visit. Trying to separate the two or encapsulate their relationship pose massive tasks. But there are ways to look at the interdependence of the one and the other, and generally the answer seems to be that a healthy ocean makes for a healthy Nantucket, and the health of Nantucket contributes greatly to the health of the waters that surround it. Overall — according to Sarah Oktay at the UMass Boston’s Field Station Nantucket — the island’s ocean waters are in “pretty good shape.” While there’s room for improvement in Nantucket Sound and the harbor, Nantucket’s area of ocean ranks ahead of the rest of the United States’ and the world’s, the chemical oceanographer said. Still, the ocean around the island may be resilient, but it isn’t bulletproof. “We’ve got a pretty robust ecosystem here that can handle some mistreatment. In human terms, it’s not a baby, but it’s not a Marine (military) either. It’s more like a young adult,” Oktay said. And the marine environment is called upon to face up to challenges. Nutrient loading is a problem, particularly in the harbor, Madaket and elsewhere, but the town has taken preventative steps to combat the degradation of the water. Septic system management and storm water remediation projects figure prominently in the fight to keep water quality high. “We have to keep doing everything we’ve been doing to ensure water quality doesn’t degrade,” Harbor Master Dave Fronzuto said. The alternative — doing less — could put Nantucket in jeopardy of encountering a crisis similar to those that have hit Cape communities, such as Falmouth and Chatham, both of which have launched sewage collection projects recently with price tags in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Whoever our forefathers were who put in our sewage collection system were way ahead of their time,” Fronzuto said. “Because of them, we’ll never end up like Falmouth or Chatham.” While that may be, boat captain and naturalist Blair Perkins has witnessed the effects of nutrient loading, specifically the increase in algal blooms, which rob marine life of sunlight and oxygen, and the up-tick in heavy metal concentrations in oceanic fishes. The onus, he said, is on us to address environmental trends. “No one can say they’re irreversible,” said Perkins, who owns and operates Shearwater Excursions. “But it depends on our habits as a human race.”

ECONOMIC DRIVER With premium placed on public access to beaches, the opportunities to partake of the island’s sands are expansive. So, too, are the activities available once one reaches the shoreline and gets out onto the water. Recreationally, visitors and residents partake in boating, sailing, fishing, swimming, beach walking and combing, seal cruises and whale watches, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and more. Ecotourism, on the increase seemingly everywhere, is no stranger to Nantucket. Perkins collaborates with the Maria Mitchell Association to offer seal cruises and whale watching ventures. The excursions include an educational component, with a Maria Mitchell naturalist joining the outings. “This is a classroom on a boat,” Perkins said. “We talk about water quality, ecology and geology in a very open forum. We try to give people the most education in the shortest amount of time.” Beyond tourism and recreational pursuits, the island’s waters continue to support local businesses and residents through traditional means. The scalloping industry, for example, is worth up to $3.5 million annually to the island’s economy, Fronzuto said. “Those are big dollars in the middle of the winter,” he said.

On average, the town issues about 150 scalloping licenses a year, but in hard economic times, the number of licenses can reach over 400. Again, a healthy ocean supports a healthy economy. “When times are tough, what are people going to do to feed their families? They’re going to fish,” Fronzuto said. “That’s why it’s so important to maintain our water quality.”

‘HARD’ NUMBERS Accounting for how much the ocean directly and indirectly influences Nantucket’s economy seems more suited for the anecdotal – unless you’re a Ph.D. candidate or a number cruncher at an economic policy think tank. But data is available. The Nantucket Planning and Economic Development Commission and the Chamber of Commerce together in 2001 pursued a reexamination of a 1993 base study of the island’s economy. The result – “Monitoring the Nantucket Economy” – was published in June 2002 and provides insight into the size Nantucket’s economic character. According to the report, Massachusetts reported earnings in 2000 of about $151.4 billion, with Nantucket making up 0.159 percent of the total. Earnings, according to the report, are “the total earned income generated by the economy, including wages and other sources of business income.” Do the math, and in dollars, Nantucket’s earnings in 2000 totaled about $241 million. Another vantage yields another figure. RKG Associates, which prepared the study, takes the state’s gross domestic product and computes a “gross county product.” RKG estimates that Nantucket comprised about 0.172 percent of Massachusett’s GDP in 2000 of $285 billion. That gives Nantucket a GCP of about $489.5 million. Those figures, however, trail the island’s current sit-

However Nantucket Historian the late Edouard Stackpole contested that claim. In Mark C. Gorey’s July 1991 story, “Auld Lang Syne: Lawsuit stops aid to shore up old cottage” in the Nantucket Beacon, Stackpole states his case. “There is no evidence that it is older than the Jethro Coffin House,” said Stackpole who added he thought that this former fishing shack might have been built in Pedee, a fishing village near Quidnet, and moved to its present location. “That was a legend that was built up over the years with no documentation to support it.” In addition to being dubbed Auld Lang Syne on its quarterboard, the house is also known as the Micah Coffin House for its builder, and the Captain Henry Coleman House for one of its longtime inhabitants and later his heirs who lived there from the end of the 18th century to 1937. Washington, D.C. architect Sartain Smith bought the house from the heirs of Gorham Coleman in 1937. According to Hobson Woodward’s story in the July 4, 1991 Inquirer & Mirror, “Restoration in the cards of Auld Lang Syne,” after Smith died in 1971, he left the cottage to his companion, Mishi Kamiya in a will disputed as unsigned by a witness. Thirteen years

ELLIS, continued from page 1 is with the ‘Sconset Beach Preservation Fund to help control that area’s erosion, and a year ago Caroline joined the Lighthouse School committee that organizes its annual, educational Nantucket Garden Festival benefit held in July – this year from July 20-23. An avid green thumb herself, Caroline truly enjoys the festival’s workshops, lectures and tours that take people into private gardens to view unsurpassed horticultural diversity and beauty. “It was just fun to open gardens. It’s been wonderful,” she said of the festival tours. For several years, Caroline opened island gardens for the Garden Conservancy, an organization that supports a national program to preserve large and notable

later when Kamiya died, she passed it to her sister, Dorothy Suga. Suga’s attempt to sell the property ran into Smith’s only living relative, his sister Audrey Maum whose contention it was that she owned it, but a probate court judge ultimately ruled in Suga’s favor in January 1991. Late in 1991 or early 1992, Max Johnson purchased Micah Coffin’s cottage and the current owner, Sam V. Daniel, III bought Auld Lang Syne from Johnson for $650,000 in October 2002. It is currently assessed at $1,241,600. Daniel declined comment on Auld Lang Syne. While Johnson and his son restored Auld Lang Syne in 1992 and into 1993, when Reeves did his survey 21 years prior, he reported a structure in dilapidated condition. Originally built as a rectangular space on a cobblestone foundation 19.5 feet by 14 feet divided into three rooms; one large and two “chambers” with a roof height of 13.5 feet, the Micah Coffin House began life with a strictly utilitarian purpose. “The Ancient structures on the Siasconset Bank in the beginning had but a single room — a crude boarded enclosure used for shelter at night and in bad weather by fishermen who came to them from Nantucket town to fish off-shore in ’Sconset,” said Reeves in his HABS notes. In time, floors were laid,

fireplaces were erected, windows put in, lean-tos were added, and the buildings gradually became the cottages they are today. “By 1675, Micah Coffin used this building as his fishing headquarters. He employed several Indians to fish for him during the season, while he remained ashore to do the cooking.” When Johnson’s restoration commenced in the early 1990s, the interior of the cottage — a kitchen, sizable living room, bedroom, bathroom and loft with a ladder leading up to it — was still more or less intact and livable with wide pine flooring planks, lined with horsehair plaster walls and warmed by a double lath and cement fireplace. His work included shoring up the structural frame of the former fishing shack including its sagging main roof beam, rebuilding the wart containing a bedroom and putting a cement block foundation beneath the centuries-old house. Unfortunately, Johnson had to remove an ancient oak tree literally growing from beneath the Shell Street side of the house to complete its restoration. The restoration realized the dreams of saving this historic house from the landfill held by the Siasconset Civic Association, the Nantucket Historical Association, the Massachusetts Historical Trust and entire village of ’Sconset.

gardens across the country. “It’s an organization that says gardens are important for our spirit,” she explained. Though she is no longer on the board of the ‘Sconset Trust, she was a member of the committee that planned the relocation of the endangered Sankaty Lighthouse in 2008. As a continuing member of the Nantucket Preservation Trust, she carries on her devotion to protect the historical integrity of the island. “I like to work on tasks with other people that are for the community’s benefit,” she said. “I think that Nantucket is such a particularly beautiful place, both the built environment with intact historic sections and the natural environment. I like people who appreciate

that and have an impact on people’s lives in a sense of place. “Nantucket has one of the largest number of authentic, intact interiors in the United States. It is American history. With sensitivity, buildings can be changed and adapted for modern use without destroying the historic parts of the building.” Caroline is indeed a busy woman. She finds time for family, reading, needlepoint and her own gardens, but sees her many civic responsibilities as a rewarding pleasure rather than as duties. “I’m very happy. I love being out here. I can’t imagine anything I’d rather do than be out here. It’s been wonderful to our family. It’s a wonderful community..”

Striped Bass: A coastal fish which is most commonly found close off shore or in rivers.Accurate when feeding, feed on smaller fish and invertebrates.

Mummichog: Plentiful year-round resident that can be found near sheltered shores over eelgrass beds and other vegetation. An omnivorous feeder meaning that it eats both plant and animal matter.

Encrusting Bryozoans: Colony made up of individuals, found in either flat or ruffled form. Many species of Encrusting Bryozoans exist on our island and may be identified by a microscope.

Blue Mussel: Commonly found in the intertidal zone in rocky areas, usually attached to bstrates.These mussels are exposed to extreme conditions such as freezing temperatures in the winter and intense heat in summer showing that they are very enduring .

Spotfin Butterflyfish: Unusual summer resident which is brought to Nantucket by the Gulf stream. Its diet consists of coral, sea anemones, worms and algae.

Northern Puffer: A common species that is found most often in the late summer. Feed on small crustaceans as well as invertebrates such as mollusks crabs and urchins. Sometimes attacking larger crabs and hard shelled invertebrates in groups.

Hard shelled clam: Highly common in intertidal and subtidal zones and can be found buried in sandy or muddy bottoms. Soft-Shelled Clam: As with hard shelled clams are common in subtidal and intertidal zones. Can be found in mud usually with a hole leading to its siphon.When under pressure soft-shelled clams will use their foot to dig.

Common Razor Clam: Found buried in the mud at or below the tide line.The foot of the clam can extend up to half of its shell length meaning that this clam has excellent digging skills.

Mole Crab: Frequently found on ocean beaches with their body pointing away from the water. As with horseshoe crabs mole crabs are not true crabs.

Atlantic Cod: Can be found between approximately 36 and 120 feet in offshore shelfs. Mostly feed on mollusks and other fish.

Rock Crab: Can be found at depths of up to 2600 feet in rocky and sandy subtidal habitats. The rock crab is aggressive and packs a powerful pinch that can be painful, scavenges for its food.

Black fingered mud crab: Very common intertidal species that can be found in the eelgrass, on pilings, and buried in the mud of marine and estuarine waters. There are four species of black fingered mud crab in our area.The species can be determined by the shape of the black markings on the cheliped (claw).

Leidy’s Comb Jelly: Commonly found in dense groups in shallow water from summer to early fall.They eat plankton. Striped Killifish: Largely common year around resident that can be found in estuaries, bays, coastal marshes and regularly open beaches. An aggressive feeder that will eat mollusks crustaceans and smaller fish. Northern Lobster: Can be found living in crevices and rocky areas in the subtidal zone.To feed this lobster catches live pray in its claws.

Bluefish: Very common in summer but will migrate offshore and southward in the winter season.

Leidy’s Comb Jelly: Most common in summer and early fall, found in shallow waters. These comb jellies are often mistaken for jellyfish but cannot sting.

Moon Jelly: Common from summer to early fall they are the most common jellyfish found in Nantucket Harbor. Feeds on Plankton.

Spider Crab: Can be found clinging to eelgrass or seaweed subtidal or intertidal zones. Scavenge for their food also called a decorator crab because it “decorates” its body with objects found in the ocean, mainly algae. Cunner: One of the most familiar fish in New England and is a year around resident. Most usually found in rocky areas around wharfs and pilings. Can be found in groups near their rocky habitats, usually have aggressive behavior.

Bay Scallop: Adults are commonly found in eelgrass beds acting as bottom feeders, the juveniles attach themselves to eelgrass or other objects to keep from being covered or buried in sediment. These scallops ,as with other scallops filter feed using gills.They will eat algae and other microscopic organisms, such as plankton. Scup: Common inshore resident that can be found from May to October. They make their home along break waters, jetties, and pilings. Scup are bottom feeders that prefer to eat crustaceans but will eat almost anything. Common Shore Shrimp: A plentiful intertidal species that can be found attaches to a substrate such as codium or eel grass.Their organs can be seen as a result f their translucent body. Sand Shrimp: Are a very frequently found bottom dwelling species that can be found in the intertidal and subtidal zones. As a way to camouflage these shrimp can change from being translucent to being dark brown in color. Common Slipper Shell: A commonly found gastropod that can be found in the intertidal and subtidal zones or washed ashore with algae attached to their shell.These slipper shells are filter feeders and undergo sex change depending on position in its stack.

Blue Crab: Found in estuarine and fresh water of the subtidal and intertidal zones.A very aggressive crab that scavenges for its food.A soft shell crab is actually a blue crab that has recently molted.

Smooth Dogfish: Dwells on the bottom offshore. Has a diet consisting of mainly squid and large crustacea.

Fiddler Crab: Found in burrows that are holes in mud flats and marsh banks.

Spiny Dogfish: Commonly found dwelling on soft bottoms offshore. Its name is derived by the spines on its dorsal fin which are used for defense. Preys on shrimp, fish, worms and crabs.

Atlantic Silverside: An abundant year-round resident that is always found along the coast on sandy or gravely beaches as well as eel grass beds. Silversides are one of the most abundant species on Nantucket that will school in groups of individuals of equal sizes.

Eelgrass: A common plant that plays a very important role in Nantucket’s marine eco system by providing shelter for prey and other marine life as well as reducing erosion by cushioning wave action and securing sediment on the sea floor. Found in shallow waters of protected bays and harbors.

Fourspine Stickleback: An abundant species that can be found on Nantucket throughout the year in salt marshes and eel-grass beds. Males will build nests composed of plant matter used to house eggs produced by females.

Green Crab: Common intertidal and subtidal species that can be found buried in the sediment or clinging to seaweed or sea grasses of marine and estuarine waters.An invasive species that was first introduced from Europe to the eastern United States in the early 1800s. Horseshoe Crab: Common species of the intertidal and subtidal zones and may be found buried in the sand. Horseshoe crabs are not actually true crabs. Japanese Shore Crab: A common species that has been found on rocks and pilings. This crab is an omnivore that scavenges for its food. The species was introduced in the late 1980s from the west Pacific. Lady Crab: Can be found burrowed in the sand at shallow beaches. Lady crabs are very aggressive and will bury themselves in the sand with only their eyes above ground, if disturbed they will jump out and attack or scare away what has disturbed them. Long-Clawed Hermit Crab: A common subtidal species that makes its home in abandoned gastropod shells on sandy bottoms off of beaches. Once a hermit crab grows out of its shell it must find a new one to move into.While trying to find a new shell to grow into hermit crabs are vulnerable because of the hermit crabs soft abdomen.

Summer Flounder: Seldom seen on Nantucket with the greatest chance of being seen during the warmer half of the year (spring and summer) close inshore. Its diet consists of small crabs and other crustaceans. Eyes are on the right side of the flounders head unless new born. Winter Flounder: A common year-round resident that can be found inshore on sandy bottoms as well as in eelgrass beds.A bottom dweller that eats smaller fish and mollusks . Eyes are on the left side of the flounders head unless new born. Lions Mane Jelly: A common species that can be found in bays, harbors, and the ocean during the summer and early fall.These jellyfish eat plankton and small fish.

Threespine Stickleback: A common year-round resident that can often be found in weedy waters or, occasionally in floating vegetation offshore. Males build elaborate nests in which several females may deposit their eggs. Tautog: Found in salt water from Nova Scotia to Georgia. It lives along the bottom, in and amongst rocks, wrecks, mussel beds, bridge pilings or other bottom features. Channeled Whelk: Found from Massachusetts to Florida, Channeled Whelks prefer sandy, shallow, intertidal or subtidal areas, and can be common in these habitats. They tend to be nocturnal and are known to eat clams. Clam Worm: The Clam Worm is a swift and voracious predator, feeding on other worms and invertebrates, carrion, and certain algae. It has a keen sense of smell and in captivity can readily locate bits of fresh clam meat.

Healthy Ocean, continued from page 11 uation, said Andrew Vorce, director of the town’s Planning Office. “The economy has certainly grown since 2000,” he said, even taking into account the nationwide downturn of recent years. He said as well that indications suggest the hospitality sector, at least, is this year far ahead of the figures from the same time in 2009. “It seems, certainly anecdotally, that things are coming back, for example in the sense that there’s more traffic this year,” Vorce said. “We’re also hearing mixed things about rentals, which seem to be highly price-dependent.” Phil Osley Sr., who has owned The Sunken Ship on Broad Street since 1975, has his own anecdote about how much of the island’s economy owes itself to the ocean: “It’s got to be close to 90 percent,” he said. The Sunken Ship, a gift store and dive shop, does much of its business during the peak summer months and caters to the ocean-going crowd. A clean ocean is good for Osley’s line of work. “Our beaches are just gorgeous. You can always find a place to park, an you can just go out on the beach and have a great time and the water’s clean. That’s the draw for tourists,” Osley said.

FUTURE IN COMMON Just like their past and present are tied, so, too, are the futures of Nantucket and the ocean linked. Maintaining a viable economy and a clean body of water are no small undertakings, but the mechanisms appear to be in place to ensure both continue in their mutually beneficial relationship. Maintaining water quality standards will persist as key factor in the ocean’s health. It’s a job that Fronzuto, his staff and others take seriously. “We’ve got to a viable fishery that can help support the community,” Fronzuto said. “And we’ve got to protect the reasons people come to Nantucket, like swimming and recreation. We’ve had this focus since the last 1980s. We realized back then how important water quality is to us.” The health of marine life will also continue to be critical to the island’s economy. And there’s been good news on that front recently, with an upswing in the striped bass population following years of regulations, according to Perkins. His hope is that bluefish will rebound from regulations of their own. Fishing for a living may be hard work, but it’s possible if you’re dedicated. “There are a pocket of tenacious commercial fish-

ermen here who can sustain themselves,” Perkins said. “If you’re hardy and if you’re persistent, you can make a living fishing.” As times have changed and tourism has taken the lead in driving the local economy, Nantucket has seen the arrival of so-called “ecotourism,” a brand of the tourist industry concerned with sustainable and environmentally sensitive practices. According to Perkins, Shearwater Excursions is the island’s only outfit to offer ecotourism alternatives to visitors and residents. He doesn’t, however, expect to be alone in the field forever. “No one fills a niche alone for long,” he said. “If other people see it’s a good, they’ll be on it.” And that may not be a bad thing in the long run for Nantucket and its ocean, both in terms of the economy and in fostering a greater sense of stewardship for nature. Making people aware of the fragility of the marine environment is a big step in protecting a precious resource, Perkins said. “There’s nothing better than educating people to protect the environment,” he said. “When people are informed about a catastrophe looming, it makes them want to do something about it.” Reprinted from the August 2010 Nantucket Property Journal
