I

f you are looking for an example of a human dynamo, you need look no further than Margaretta Andrews. Almost from the day she moved to the island in September 1979, she has been actively involved in community work, something that gives her great personal gratification and has been a blessing to many local non-profit organizations. Margaretta had been visiting Nantucket in the summers, but after college she decided it would be relaxing and interesting to spend a winter here, which she did in her family’s unheated house on Darling Street. “It was the coldest winter I’ve ever had in my life,” she recalled. But it turned out that her future husband, Bill, was staying with neighbors who invited Margaretta to join them for dinner one night. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. “I was one of those people who came for a little while and never left,” she said of her decision to remain here. Her first job was as a breakfast waitress in the formal dining room at the Jared Coffin House when it was still owned and run by Phil and Peg Read.

NEWS REPORT The Jetties, continued from page 1 stone quarried in Connecticut and extend some combined two miles into Nantucket Sound. They work by channeling the tides against the Nantucket Bar, an accumulation of sand about a half mile offshore. The resultant force – called a “scour” – “(sweeps) up and (carries) away the sea floor between the two stone walls. In this way it carves a deeper channel for ocean-going vessels” (Manville). The history of the west jetty and the corresponding east jetty, which extends from Coatue into the Sound, is tied directly to efforts to overcome the Nantucket Bar. The sandbar, runs from Eel Point to Great Point, “was a place of disaster,” Matt Byrne writes in “Nantucket Jetties” (Historic Nantucket, Fall 1999): “The sandbar, a massive shoal, stretched across the northwest coast of Nantucket blocking passage into the harbor of any vessel drawing more than nine feet of water. Because of the many sailing vessels that struck upon it and were lost, the shoal acquired a mean reputation.” The lack of depth was a problem, but worse, as Manville writes, was “the violence it can foment in otherwise calm seas.” In certain conditions, vessels could in seconds move from 10 feet or more of water into two feet or less. The sudden change could cause vessels to run aground, roll over or “bury their bows in the sand and founder on the shoal” (Manville).

Passing the bar Finding an efficient way over the bar was critical to the island’s economy. In the late 1700s, it had become practice to “lighter” boats attempting to enter the harbor. The costly and time-consuming practice required small vessels to take cargo from larger ships, in turn allowing the larger, now lightened, ships to float over the bar. In 1803, islanders wrote to Congress to request aid in the fight against the bar. Washington responded by dispatching the United State Engineers, a forerunner of the Army Corps of Engineers, as Manville notes. The surveyors proposed what amounted to a wooden jetty: Wood would be driven into the ocean floor at 10foot intervals, which would be filled with stacked wood. Town meeting rejected the idea, opting instead for dredging and sending another petition for aid to Congress. The request failed. The late 1820s saw more movement on the problem of the bar. In 1826, the U.S. Engineers returned and proposed building a breakwater at the cost of $900,000. Congress balked at the proposal on account of its price tag. In 1828, a group of island resident grown rich by the whaling industry amassed $15,000 to dredge the channel, and promptly ran out of money before making so much as a dent. In 1829, U.S. Engineers came back and resuscitated the dredging plan. Work progressed well until a storm in 1832 wiped out all gains. As Manville writes, the explosion of the whaling industry and the wealth it generated encouraged Nantucketers to ignore the bar, “forgetting in their ebullience that the ground was falling away beneath their feet.” Lightering continued, but by the 1840s, the process could cost up to $1,000 per vessel. Alternative means were sought, including reviving an 1818 invention by Captain William Morris called “the camel.” The system involved floating drydocks that were flooded and submerged. The vessel wishing to cross the bar was positioned between the drydocks, which were then pumped out and allowed the vessel and the drydocks to float “high in the

water to be easily towed across the Bar” (Byrne). Camels proved a hit with 45 of 57 ships entering or leaving the harbor in 1845 using the method (Manville). The system’s ingenuity was for not, however, as the whaling industry’s center had by then migrated to New Bedford with its deep water port. The Great Fire of 1846 further added to the island’s decline, as did, as Byrne notes, the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, the California Gold Rush and the Civil War.

Safe harbor The island’s fortunes rebounded after the Civil War when increased traffic along the Eastern Seaboard prioritized the need for safe harbors (Byrne). In 1880, islanders again petitioned Congress for assistance, this time portraying the island as such a place for vessels crossing the Sound. Congress agreed, declaring the island a “Harbor of Refuge” and authorizing $172,000 to build the west jetty. Construction of the jetty began April 26, 1880, and “it was a painstaking process, and almost as soon as the they started the engineers fell behind” schedule (Manville). Stones had to be positioned precisely, with broad rocks at the base, smaller rocks in the center and large ones on the top and sides. Work progressed, although setbacks arose. In 1881, the scour created by the jetty damaged the structure. In 1882, a ship carrying stone from Connecticut wrecked on the bar. Five years after the project commenced, engineers came to see the necessity of a second jetty to deepen the channel in and out of the harbor. The east jetty was to be built from Coatue, which presented a fresh set of obstacles, not least that of access given the area’s lack of depth. By 1899, the east jetty was still beset by complications, but the west jetty was nearly finished at a length of 5,000 feet. Work on the east jetty continued into the 20th century, with E.S. Belden of Connecticut overseeing much of the final construction. The jetties project finished to the army’s satisfaction in 1937, more than 130 years since the residents first asked Congress for assistance.

Real estate development The effort to build the jetties changed the face of the island. As Manville notes, the jetties disrupted wind and wave patterns that existed for thousands of years. The west jetty interfered with the flow of wind- and wave-carried sand from the Cliff to toward town. This caused sand to accumulate on the west jetty’s outside wall. The deposited sand, Manville writes, “created Jetties Beach, Steps Beach, and the land on which the Beachside Resort, Cliffside Beach Club, and Jetties Beach parking lot all currently sit.” More remarkable, Manville writes, “if whaling captains could return today, they would be stunned to find not just a new channel, but developed land where the old channel had been.” The old channel followed the shoreline, entering the harbor west of Brant Point. The jetties’ legacy, then, could well be interpreted as being the creation “of some of the island’s most alluring real estate.” The jetties have not, however, defeated the Nantucket Bar. The bar, Manville writes, “remains … perhaps smaller, perhaps less dangerous – but present all the same.”

A

lthough Jetties Beach takes its name to the stone structures that reach far into Nantucket Sound, its continued popularity among the swimming and sunbathing set owes in no small amount to its distinctive pavilion. A Historic Structures Report prepared by Preservation Institute: Nantucket in 2007 charts the evolution of the pavilion and buildings in its vicinity. According to the report, Clifford Folger arranged the construction of a bathing pavilion in 1904 at “Cliff bathing beach.” The town of Nantucket had purchased the beach the year before for $5,500 and leased the property to Folger in 1904. Folger, who was born on Nantucket and lived on mainland Massachusetts at the time, hired Boston architects Robert Swain Peabody and John Goddard Stearns to build a complex featuring a two-story casino and two wings of bathhouses, with one wing for men and the other for women. The complex was completed June 15, 1904. Alterations started almost at once. The report cites a 1909 Sanborne Map showing a new configuration to the buildings, with the east bathhouse now perpendicular to the pavilion. In 1912, additions were made to create “a more cohesive overall appearance to the complex.” Changes included clerestory windows for the bathhouses and adjusting the pitch of the bathhouse roofs. In 1924, the town leased the property to Leon M. Royal, who changed the name of the business operated at “Bathing Beach so called” from Cliff Beach Bath Houses to Royal’s Cliff Beach Bath Houses. Royal added an eponymous bathhouse in front of the west wing soon after taking hold of the business. Controversy washed up on the beach in 1937 when Franklin E. Smith challenged the town’s claim on “Cliff Beach (so called).” Smith contended that the town claimed more than the 10 acres it had bought at auction in 1903. The matter reached the Statehouse before the town opted to settle with Smith for $4,500. 1937 also saw the arrival of the name “The Jetties” to the property when Paul F. Klingelfuss signed a five-year lease on the property. Minor alterations were carried out in subsequent years, until a remodeling project was put forward in 1972. The project called for the construction of decks on the east and west sides of the pavilion. Changes came again after an October 1991 storm damaged the property, most significantly a new bathhouse and modifications to bring existing structures up to code. While minor alterations continue, “little has changed from the 1992/3 remodeling work,” according to the report, with “the Pavilion (continuing) to express some of the character of the 1903 design.”

In1980, she began working for Jim Lentowski at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, then from 1982 through 1989 she was patient accounts manager at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Margaretta took time off to raise two daughters, but during that period she was closely involved as a volunteer for several human service agencies. In 1994 she became a member of the hospital’s board of trustees, with this year marking her first in 17 years she has not been on that board. In 1997, she started working to bring the Boston Pops to the island as the hospital’s major yearly fundraiser, serving as Pops committee chairman for two years and still playing a major part in the event as a committee member lining up the concert’s VIP seating. This year is special, because it is the 15th annual Pops, featuring Carly Simon as key performer, and also the hospital’s 100th anniversary. “Who knew way back then that this would be an

annual event,” said Margaretta, noting that they have sold out the VIP tables with more than 100 fully reserved. “It’s a jigsaw puzzle each year as to whose turn it is to be in the back row and who’s going to be in the front.” As if she wasn’t busy enough, Margaretta was hired as the executive director of the Community Foundation for Nantucket in 2008. At the time she knew nothing about community foundations, but once she did research she was convinced they are a brilliant way for philanthropic donors to support community non-profits through various avenues, with the foundation helping to educate them on what each agency does and needs and with the foundation attending to all the legwork and paperwork involved in their giving. “I really love what I’m doing,” she said. “Every day is very different.” As part of the foundation’s generous funding of a

Human Services Initiative, Margaretta over the past few months developed directories for all island service agencies explaining what they do that are posted on the foundation’s website home page. “People are starting to realize that we are here and we can help,” she said. On top of all this, she has just become a member of the Council for Human Services and is about to be sworn in. “I got involved because my (foundation) board decided last year that they wanted to be involved in the community in a concrete way, as a catalyst around important issues.” Free time can be hard to come by, but besides her packed civic schedule, Margaretta is crazy for paddle tennis and enjoys gardening and doing needlework. “That pretty much fills my days.”
