ell, another summer is behind us, and fall looms large ahead. Before it gets too far behind us, I want to reflect briefly on the month of August, which was highlighted by Nantucket Race Week. As a sailor, I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a couple of days out on the twelve-meter Columbia, followed up by an invitation to participate in the Opera House Cup on yet another gorgeous boat named Black Watch. It’s a nice pair of boats, to say the least.

The Opera House Cup is a pretty amazing race with an equally amazing history. Among other things, it’s one of the largest all-wooden sailboat regattas in the world. I recently heard a pretty famous sailor talking about his love of older wooden boats, which he contrasted with today’s more modern boats that were, he said, “like floating condominiums.” Not to take anything away from the beauty of those yachts, but he’s right. Today’s modern sailboats have got it all; amazing interiors with all of the amenities of home are commonplace. In other words, they’re floating homes. And trust me when I tell you that these are homes I would very much not mind living in. And I’m thinking that I’m not the only one out there. Think of the benefits. You’ve got a beautiful home with an amazing view. Your neighbors are usually pretty friendly and like-minded folks. And if you get tired of wherever you happen to find yourself at a given moment, you can pull up the anchor and move. What’s not to love? Yep, it’s that time of year again. The time of year when I start looking at the prices of live-aboard sailboats and dreaming of cruising south when things around here get a little chilly for my aging bones. And being a sailor, the whole thing just sounds perfect. But there’s one little catch. Actually, there is a really, really big catch, and that would be the price of the little gem. All things being equal however, and in a world where purchase price isn’t an issue, there’s still one little catch. The problem is this: When you get down to it, once you’ve got the boat, that’s just the beginning of your costs, because things tend to break down and wear out, no matter how well you take care of them. Bill Pew, the former owner of Bill Fisher Tackle, once told a customer that, if wanted to buy a boat, he should start flushing hundred-dollar-bills down the toilet. Each time he did it, he should watch the bill go all the way down. When he could do that without feeling the urge to reach in and grab it before it went down the drain, he was ready to buy a boat. And while buying a house isn’t quite the same as a boat, there are a lot of expenses associated with home ownership that you might not be expecting when you sign on the dotted line at the bank. Just like with my boat – or the one I keep seeing myself in, anyway – there always seems to be something popping up that needs fixing. And I’m not talking about burnt-out light bulbs. There are the annual things – turning on and off the water to the outdoor shower, for example – and then there are the standard things that don’t take you too much by surprise – like those pesky light bulbs. But then there are the big things that sneak up on you if you’re not paying attention. Painting the trim or replacing the shingles come to mind. And then there are the real doozies that nobody expects.The recent meteorological unpleasantness we endured is a perfect example. Not too many of us plan to get our house – or our boat, for that matter – struck by lightning. But it happens. And while insurance might pay for a lot of those repairs, that pesky insurance bill keeps coming in the mail and has to get paid. The message here is not intended to scare you off of buying a house. However, it’s important to understand what you’re getting yourself in to before you buy. Buying a house is one of the most expensive decisions you’ll ever make, especially if you’re buying a house here on Nantucket. And a lot of us scrimp and save every nickel we can find in order to buy it, which doesn’t leave us a lot of extra reserve cash to spend should something go wrong. So no, my message to you today is not to avoid buying your own home. Rather, I’m just trying to get you to think about keeping a little something set aside for a rainy day – literally and figuratively – because that day will inevitably come. And you don’t want to be on the short end of that stick. So, I usually scan through those every morning to see what’s going on. What do you do to unwind? I think going to the beach is the perfect way to unwind and recharge my batteries.We have the most incredible beaches here. So, you’re never short of somewhere to go! Are you reading anything interesting now? I just bought “The Last Resort” by Douglas Rogers. I grew up in Zimbabwe and my family still live there, so I love reading books about Africa. I just went to a talk at the library the other night by Douglas Rogers on his new book and am looking forward to reading it. How would you spend your ideal day? At the beach! Who would you choose to be shipwrecked on a desert island with? My husband, Rob Morgenstern.

My family flew from Zimbabwe, Argentina, Florida and New York to be with us, and it was just the perfect day. What is your favorite beach on Island? Fishermans used to be my favorite and we got married there. But now I think I prefer Great Point and Smith’s Point, as they’re not as crowded. What is your Favorite Walk? I enjoy walking in the moors and Sanford Farm. What is your Favorite Island Meal? Is it bad if I have more than one? Lobsters cooked at Souza’s, the lobster tostada’s at Corazon, and Tuna Martini’s at the Pearl. Oh, and the ‘chicken fried’ lobster at American Seasons. I like food a lot! What do you do on a day off? My goal is usually to get to the beach with a bunch of magazines and a good book. Samantha Parsons was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. After college, she worked in the travel industry in both Zimbabwe and South Africa, where she traveled the world extensively with her work.With a passion for traveling, Sam moved to London, where she worked and traveled worldwide for two years. Sam arrived on Nantucket for the summer in 1995, and as many people do, immediately fell in love with the Island. She has lived here year ’round since 1997.Two years after arriving on Nantucket, she met her husband, Rob Morgenstern, who created the Nantucket Bottle Opener and Nantucket Wine-Signs. After 8 years working at the Nantucket Boat Basin and Nantucket Island Resorts, Sam worked as the Director of Membership Services at The Westmoor Club.
