s my loyal readership is all too painfully aware, I am not a math guy. Nor am I a science guy. Case in point, I liked high school biology so much I took it twice. Physics? I was happy with my Gentleman’s C my senior year, thank you very much. And math? Puh-shaw. I took something called “discrete math,” because, to quote my academic advisor, “Calculus isn’t for everyone.” Indeed. So, I must admit to being a little intimidated when interviewing Andrew McKenna-Foster, the Director of Natural Science Education and Programs for the Maria Mitchell Association. Not only is he much younger than I (and I’m talking double-digits younger) he’s also much smarter, having double-majored in biology and physics at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. To top that off, he earned a Master’s in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. His thesis was on spiders on Nantucket.

aria Mitchell Association Executive Director Janet Schulte, some of her staff and members of the board of directors recently visited museums in California and Seattle “to get some ideas for the best practical uses for what we want to do with” the Association’s new, to-be-built natural science center on Washington Street. Last fall, the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) and the Nantucket Islands Land Bank swapped properties opposite each other on Washington Street. The move allows the Land Bank to open up more open space on the waterfront, and the MMA to combine its natural science museum, now in the Hinchman House, with its aquarium on the harbor. You’ve Gotta Break a Few Eggs
R
ecently a charge was filed against yours truly. Not in the legal sense, Mom, not to worry. No, this was actually a little worse. You see, I was doing some work in a relatively small office that apparently had some excellent acoustics. Or, horrendous acoustics, depending on your perspective. Regardless of your perspective, though, the charge was leveled. And what was this trumped-up charge, you may ask? Brace yourself for this one, kids. I was accused of making too much noise when I type. You read that right. I type too loudly, apparently. And this is not noise like I’m reading out loud as I type, or grunting loudly like Jimmy Connors from the effort of moving my fingers across the keyboard. No, the accusation was that the clicking of the keys was so loud that it was disturbing others in the office, a by-product of my fingers coming down with such violent force upon the keyboard. Mind you, I type 75 words per minute, which might be the cause of the noise. Actually, I’m being nice. The fact that I type fast is the sole reason for the noise. So in what could only be called a complete paradox, I made everyone happy by typing slower, thereby being less efficient because I wasn’t getting as much done. But I was quieter at least, and that made the whole office a better place. Or something like that, anyway. Seriously, people. I hope I’m not alone here in suggesting that if your biggest complaint about someone doing work for you is that they type too loud, you’re pretty much ahead of about 99 percent of the rest of the business world. In this day and age, when it’s easier to pretend to be doing work than ever, I would think it’s nice to have somebody with a decent work ethic. But what do I know? I’m just a writer. Not to worry, there is a point here, and it’s not even too farfetched a point. When you hire someone to do a job — maybe it’s writing or maybe it’s building an addition on to your house — you’re expecting that person to do his or her job. That’s kind of the basis of the whole employment contract, whether it’s written out or not (and whether or not the typist that wrote it did so loudly is also immaterial, but I digress). So you’ve hired this person to do a job. You’re paying them to do this job. Paying them with hard-earned money, I might add. My only advice to is to let them do their job. These people you’re paying to do the work know that’s involved. They’re trained to do it. They know how to do it. They have more training and more knowhow than you, which is why you hired them in the first place. Think of it this way. Tax season is fast approaching, whether we like it or not, and given that my own father is a recently-retired CPA, it’s one of those things that’s near and dear to my heart on some level. So with your taxes, it’s often wise to hire an accountant to do all the grunt work on your tax return. After all, they know the laws, they know the deductions, they know the ins and outs of the whole thing. When your accountant gives you the final report, do you complain that he used too much paper or that the contrast on the prints is too high or that there are too many numbers in small boxes? The reality of doing any work around the house, no matter how large or small the project, is that there are going to be some inconveniences that arise. Paint smells funny. Saws make noise. Nails get dropped on the ground. Saw dust makes a mess. These are all part of the whole package deal you sign up for when you do a home improvement project. The thing you’ve got to keep in mind is that the key word there is “improvement.” In the end, when the saws are done cutting and the paint has dried and the mess has all been cleaned up, your home is going to have increased in value and you’ll be happier in your new space. And that’s what it’s all about now, isn’t it? The moral of the story here is that you have to get through the swamps to get to the greener pastures, kids. There’s no way around it. If you want to improve your home, you’re going to have to endure a little unpleasantness. But just keep in mind that it’s a temporary situation. Things will return to normal – and even get better – but you just have to be patient. So next time you’re tempted to tell that contractor that he’s making too much noise with his table saw, remember the advice from your favorite typist who took far too long to write this column, all because he was trying to be quiet. Andrew Spencer, a fifth-generation summer resident-turnedyear-rounder, has been writing about Nantucket since moving to the island full-time in 2002. He is the author of, “Tower of Thieves: Inside AIG’s Corporate Culture of Greed,” and also the co-author of “Bear Trap: The Fall of Bear Stearns and the Panic of 2008.”

NEWS REPORT MMA Museum, continued from page 1 “We have spent a bit of time this fall determining interim uses for the property and we got a survey started,” said Schulte. In the swap, the Land Bank purchased .12 of an acre at 31 Washington St. and .27 of an acre at 33 Washington St. It then gave those lots to the MMA in exchange for MMA’s aquarium property on .13-of-an-acre lot at 28 Washington St. After the removal of the aquarium building from 28 Washington St, a structure the MMA may incorporate into the design of its new building, the Land Bank, which also purchased 30A and 30B Washington St., is merging the three lots to form a single new piece of waterfront open space. “We’re putting out an RFP (request for proposals) shortly for an architect and raising money. We have one major donor already,” said Schulte. Schulte added that that those funds cover the costs of planning, including hiring an architect. The MMA still needs to raise money to pay for the new building, an amount to be determined when the 109-year-old natural science organization has concrete plans for the new center. The MMA, however, has produced a rough sketch of how its board envisions the new museum. Based on displays of Nantucket habitats and research of the various island conservation organizations, this early sketch shows an aquarium space inside and outside the former Christopher’s building, a gift shop, a ticket area and bathrooms. From an aquarium geology area, patrons walk outside to a deck, which winds past three
Andrew, continued from page 1 That’s a deal-breaker for yours truly right there. I can handle the fact that you know how many units of ATP are created as a result of the photosynthesis cycle and you can do DNA recombination equations in your sleep, but when you start talking about spiders, my friend, you’ve lost me. Yet, spiders are one of the things that Andrew gets into. “Part of my job description at the Maria Mitchell Association is doing research,” he explained, “and I focus that research on the biodiversity of small things — worms, insects and spiders, for example. I specialize in spiders.” And how, pray tell, does one come to specialize in spiders? It all started seven years ago, when a bright-eyed young man from Colby College saw an ad online for an internship with the Maria Mitchell Association on Nantucket. Andrew got that job, and kept coming back every summer. This past year, he was hired full-time in his current position. While we were on the subject of spiders, I mentioned that I’d heard a rumor that Tuckernuck was a hotbed for black widow spiders. I seem to recall hearing that about the same time I swore that I’d never set foot again on Tuckernuck, in fact. When I mentioned the little island, Andrew’s eyes lit up
House Story, continued from page 1 choppy waters unnerved her. She had a bad experience once when roiling swells between the mainland and the island incapacitated her steamer, forcing a rescue at sea of she and her fellow passengers. Because of this, Hinchman never returned to the island after her mother’s passing in 1902. Ironically, it was her philanthropic efforts off island that made the biggest splash on Nantucket, with waves that continue today to break on those who benefit from all that the Maria Mitchell Association has to offer. The three daughters of Peleg Mitchell, brother of William Mitchell, and their cousin, Maria Mitchell, along with their immediate families, all grew up at 1 Vestal St, where the Maria Mitchell Association was founded in 1902. But it wasn’t a Mitchell that initiated the process. In 1886, Lydia’s husband, Charles Hinchman, while visiting his in-laws with his wife, suggested that the old

aquatic life touch tanks, intermittent beach ecosystem displays nearby, a discovery planetarium, and a scrub oak exhibit and circles around a wetland/vernal pool to heathland and grassland exhibits. Schulte cautions that the MMA produced this drawing only to give the HDC a clear sense of what might sprout up on the MMA’s new property. It is in no way their final, or even preliminary plans. “That was simply to get us through the process with the HDC,” said Schulte. “We now need to hire an architect and get what our program will be; there is still a lot of discussion to be had with the Conservation Commission and the HDC.
“We’re still focusing on becoming a science aquarium center that brings together the public outreach of our program. I would say we’re still at the very early stages of how to strike an idea.”
in the way that only those of a spider-guy can. “Birds and insects run that island,” he said, almost excitedly. “They’ve got North American black widows and one of the densest populations of a particular species of tarantula anywhere. And these huge millipedes.” But it’s not all fun and multi-legged terrors in Andrew’s world. The Maria Mitchell Association has recently begun the process of creating a new Nantucket Science Center and Aquarium, hopefully within a couple of years (See related story). “We’ve hired an architect, and we’re currently in the process of figuring out how best to create a place that will allow us to use the latest technology and ideas to present science to non-scientists.” Whereas the current museum is a museum in the older sense — mounted animals under glass, signs telling people not to touch things, that sort of thing — the new Science Center will be a completely hands-on and interactive experience geared towards letting kids, and adults for that matter, get involved with science up-close and personal. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here, but we do want to make it modern and all-encompassing. That’s in step with Maria Mitchell’s own philosophy of education. She was an all-
around naturalist, and we’re trying to embody that in the new Science Center.” And in the quest to be a resource for the entire island, Andrew and his team at the MMA are currently hosting focus groups with local residents, including their Washington Street neighbors. The goal for the new center is to create a destination for families on the south side of downtown that will have a planetarium, an aquarium and various interactive displays. “We want it to be like the Whaling Museum,” Andrew told me, “but on the other side of town.” So long as they’re willing to keep the tarantulas and black widows and three-inch millipedes out of the petting zoo, even I might be coaxed into going to the new Science Center. Just don’t ask me to do math once I’m there.
Mitchell family house be preserved to commemorate the life of Maria Mitchell, the nation’s first female astronomer and professor at Vassar College who had died three years earlier, according to Thomas E. Drake in his historical treatment, “The First Half Century of the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association.” With Lydia structuring and advertising the memorial idea, Eliza becoming the first treasurer and Mary the first curator and summer program director, the three Mitchell cousins of the late Maria Mitchell got professors and alumnae from their cousin’s alma mater, Vassar Collage, to form an “organizing committee.” In a year’s time, the sisters created the association, took a donation of Maria’s scientific library of papers, books and research materials to build new group’s library, acquired two small telescopes including the one Maria spotted her comet with in 1847, attracted 220 members and adopted bylaws, which included the stipulation that all officers and managers within the organization have either Nantucket or Vassar connections.
“For the rest of their lives these three Nantucket-born sisters worked to make what they called ‘The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association’ not only a memorial to a distinguished Nantucket woman, but to create a popular scientific center for people on the island, and to develop an institution where scientific research worthy of America’s first woman astronomer might go forward,” said Drake. At the outset, according to Drake, the fledgling organization boasted the birthplace of Maria Mitchell as a living museum of early 1800s Quaker life, the department of natural science, a science library and later, the department of astronomy. Although an observatory would come in 1908, annexed to the birthplace and the Association’s first staff astronomer a year later, the natural science department’s operations were relegated to the library, the birthplace kitchen and north side rooms, and eventually, the town’s public school classrooms. The Maria Mitchell Association wouldn’t gain a prop-

Continued from previous page er base for its natural science department in the Hinchman House until 1944. According the Historical American Building Survey in the Library of Congress, the Lydia S. Hinchman House, a late Federal style structure, was built in the early 19th century for Thomas Coffin. Later that century, from 1870 to 1929, the Woodbridge Family occupied the house at 7 Milk St., a structure that extends west down the south side of Vestal Street. With physical buffering from neighbors of the library and birthplace on her agenda, along with her family’s needs, Ms. Hinchman became the next owner when the Woodbridge house came up for sale. “In 1929, Lydia S. Hinchman, a first cousin of Maria Mitchell, purchased the house, located adjacent to the Maria Mitchell Complex,” said the HABS summary of the Hinchman House. “Though Mrs. Hinchman never lived in the house, she finished it for her children and grandchildren who summered there. Lydia Hinchman willed the property to her son with the request that it pass to the Maria Mitchell Association upon his death.” Lydia Hinchman died in 1938 at 93. Title to her house went to her husband, Charles, on the condition that upon his death, that it be transferred to the Maria Mitchell Association as a gift. Charles died in 1944 and in August of that year, the Association took possession of the house, which it dubbed the Lydia S. Hinchman House. “The aquarium lived in there on and off, lectures were held in the space,” said Mitchell House Curator Jascin L. Finger. “There were some pretty remarkable people who came to lecture including Rachel Carson.” Drake credits Lydia’s sister, Mary Albertson, a
teacher and amateur botanist for initiating the natural science department in 1904. The beginnings of today’s open telescope nights took shape under Mary Albertson’s guidance in the early days of this department. “Mrs. Albertson inaugurated a program of talks on birds, butterflies, and eclipses; she promoted ‘Moon Evenings,’ with Maria Mitchell’s telescope set up out in the yard; she encouraged a study of the Sankaty Head Pleistocene fossils under Dr. Joseph A. Cushman of the Boston Natural History Society. His pamphlet on the subject appeared as the first Maria Mitchell Association publication in 1906,” said Drake. Albertson also started Maria Mitchell’s herbarium collection of Nantucket dried wildflowers, which numbered more than 1,000 by 1910. After Albertson’s death in 1914, her daughter, Alice took over her duties in natural science, publishing her book, “Nantucket Wildflowers” in 1921 and being named Director Natural Science in 1926 by the managers of the association, according to Drake. Albertson’s assistant, Grace Wyatt, replaced Albertson in 1933 as natural science director and became the first of her kind to enjoy a proper facility for her programs when the Hinchman House was willed to the Maria Mitchell Association in 1944. “The building opened in 1945 as headquarters of the Department and a museum of natural science,” Drake said. “No longer would children’s nature classes have to be held in the library or in the Town’s distant Cyrus Peirce School as Miss Wyatt had finally done in desperation in 1944.” Unfortunately, poor health ended Wyatt’s tenure in 1950. University of Virginia biology professor Dr. Edwin M. Betts took the job in 1951. Drake credited
Betts with converting the basement of the Hinchman House into classrooms and regularizing the lecture program with weekly Friday night lectures during the summer in the library, each followed by a reception in the Hinchman House. Today’s director, Andrew McKenna-Foster, (see related article, page 1), who succeeded Bob Kennedy last fall, oversees a Hinchman House containing the natural science museum on the first floor along with a lecture space and gift shop. The natural science collection resides in the basement where classes are no longer taught and the second and third floors are used for staff housing during the summer. These functions will continue for at least the next two years at 7 Milk St. while the Maria Mitchell Association designs and builds its new combined natural science museum and aquarium building down at 31 and 33 Washington St. Maria Mitchell Association Executive Director Janet Schulte said that it’s too early in that process for her to say how the Hinchman House will be used once the science museum uses are moved downtown. But, suffice it to say that the spirit of Lydia S. Hinchman’s commitment to her cousin’s historic vocation and astronomical discoveries will endure in its’ new home on the harbor. Peter B. Brace is a freelance writer who has lived on Nantucket for the last 15 years. The former environmental, growth and development writer for the Nantucket Independent and the Nantucket Beacon, Brace, the author of “Walking Nantucket: A Walkers Guide to Exploring Nantucket on Foot,” is currently working on a natural history of the island and his sequel to “Walking Nantucket.”
