NEWS REPORT Great Point, continued from page 1 The area north of Great Point, heavily traveled with whaler and freight traffic in the late 1700s, was fraught with shoals on both sides. And because the island’s economy was dependent on these ships’ safe passage, in 1770 Nantucket formed a committee to petition the General Court of Massachusetts to build a lighthouse on the northern terminus of Sandy Point. Sidelined by the Revolutionary War, which lasted until 1783, the island’s lighthouse efforts sat out the war, but finally paid off on February 5, 1784 when the state’s General Court enacted a resolution to fund construction of Sandy Point’s first lighthouse by a private contractor. The lighthouse, a wooden tower, went up fast and its first keeper, former whaler and mapmaker of the shoals surrounding Nantucket and Vineyard sounds, Captain Paul Pinkham, was hired by the town to keep it lit. “Since there was initially no keeper’s dwelling, Pinkham was forced to travel seven miles back and forth along the barrier beach to reach the lighthouse,” according to LighthouseFriends.com. “He was initially paid a salary of $166.66 per year, but that was soon increased due to the unusual hardship of serving at the station. After three years of this routine, a residence was finally built at the station, much to the keeper’s relief.” Pinkham made the seven-mile trip on foot or horseback to light the whale oil lamps every night that collectively sent out a beam about 12 miles, from lamp flames reflecting on shiny metal sheets behind the lanterns. This original lighthouse lasted until 1816 when fire, suspected to be arson, leveled the wooden lighthouse. The Historic American Buildings Survey in the Library of Congress states that the federal government, acting as the nation’s lighthouse operators at the time, quickly raised $7,500 to build new lighthouse of masonry stone 60 feet tall 70 feet above sea level with a lantern space eightand-a-half feet tall by nine feet in diameter. As early as 1838, the Great Point Lighthouse beam of warning light was formed with 14 lanterns arranged in two parallel circles in the lantern space that were powered by various oils including whale oil, lard oil, mineral oil and colza oil, an extract of the turnip mustard plant, according to the HABS. In 1857, the reach of the Great Point lighthouse beam gained in brightness when a third-order Fresnel lens replaced shimmering metal reflectors and the whale oil lanterns were replaced by an incandescent oil-vapor apparatus, in which kerosene in a vaporized form was burned under a mantle creating 12,000 candlepower producing a 14-mile visibility range, according to the HABS. By 1959, the Coast Guard automated the lighthouse and demolished the keeper’s quarters and various outbuildings. Thirteen years earlier, Nantucketer Pam Lohmann’s father purchased much of Great Point from the start of the Galls out to northern tip of the point for 10¢ an acre, plus back taxes. He built two beach cottages in the dunes on the east side of the lagoon. “In 1946, my father bought it at a tax sale,” said Lohmann. “It was supposed to be 300 acres, but it never

It is safe to say that he is very happy with his decision to retire at 66, having spent more than half his years on earth with “the corporation” and setting aside many of his personal loves because of job obligations. “I was the last Nantucketer up there — a full Nantucket native like me,” he said of the market’s staff. “I love people. I laugh, giggle and talk with everybody. I really hated to leave. When he was discharged Larry came home and worked as a carpenter for his grandfather, Ernest Lema, Sr., before joining the Stop & Shop ranks in 1969. In those days the store was called Finast, then Edwards prior to Stop & Shop, but was always owned by the same Dutch company. Larry began his career as head meat cutter following three weeks of special training in Hartford, Conn., where he learned health laws, how to safely use potentially dangerous cutting equipment, how to properly cut all types of meats for maximum tenderness and minimum waste, what to display when and how to rotate stock and, very importantly, how to interact with the public. Though it was rare, Larry prided himself on always providing a full refund to anyone unhappy with meat they purchased from his department.

“It’s not a simple business. You’ve got to treat the people right,” he said. Larry has plenty to look forward to now that his time is his own. His daughter Elizabeth and her three children live in Dennis, Mass., and he will visit them more often. His son Jamie is a manager at Yates Gas (father and son are the last of the Nantucket Lema clan) and Larry plans to spend more time going boating and fishing with him. Larry is an active member of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, he loves walking the beaches, especially being on Coatue, fishing, cooking and gardening. “I’m just a little old man,” he joked. “Now, I’m free. I can fish and travel. I don’t have to worry about looking at [expiration] dates all the time. I’ve had a good life and I’m not leaving here. I’ll keep busy — there’s a lot of little things I can do.” May 5, 2011
