NEWS REPORT 82 Main, continued from page 1 “The two ships sailed in consort to the southeast, making their first landfall at the Canary Islands; from there, they sailed south to recruit at Cape de Verde, where they met up with cousins Jonathan Coffin and Brown Coffin, each commanding his own ship. Departing Boa Vista on November 10, Asia and Alliance crossed the Equator and made for their next waypoint, the island of Trinidada (Trinity) at latitude 20º south,” noted Dickson in his article. Builder Perez Jenkins, or Housewright Perez Jenkins (as builders were called during this period), built 82 Main Street in 1808 after purchasing the land, now at .17 of an acre, from Peter Ramsdell, who owned the house immediately to the west, for $330, according to island historian Betsy Tyler’s book, “A Walk Down Main Street: The Houses and Their Stories.” Eighty-two Main was not, however, Perez’s only structural achievement in the then young Town of Nantucket. He is known for building the Old Gaol at 15R Vestal Street, so named in reference to the gallows built in front of it, with his brother, John in 1806. Jenkins must have been talented because in addition to simple houses, he had learned to specialize. For $2,090.49, he and his brother built Nantucket’s first jail of giant, thick oak timbers buttressed with iron bolts built into the walls from end to end with iron rods across the windows and heavy wooden, iron reinforced doors. This jail that the Jenkins Brothers built presented challenges to those held there for their infractions. “The solidly built jail forced prisoners to come up with creative escape plans,” notes the Nantucket Historical Association on the historic sites page of its Web site. “Archival material held at the NHA Research Library contains many accounts of successful and unsuccessful prison-breaks, including one of a 15 year-old boy who crawled out the chimney flue, and of a prisoner who had a key delivered to his second floor window by a woman using a block and tackle pulley system constructed for the purpose.” Jenkins is also known for his construction of the Methodist Church and the rebuilding of the Second Congregational Meeting House Church tower on Centre Street. His construction of the house that where Coffin would eventually live was one of basic Federal-style design. Clay Lancaster, in his book on island architecture, “The Architecture of Historic Nantucket,” describes 82 Main St. as being “Built in the 19th century, Federal style, 2-story clapboard front, shingle sides, on high brick basement, single chimney at each end, 5-bayed façade, center doorway with transom and sidelights, wood stoop with double steps, 12/12 paned windows. Southwest wing added ca. 1890, also roofwalk on early house.” Exactly when Elijah Coffin lived in this house is not known. But his return to Nantucket, as chronicled by Dickson in his article, is notable. At the start of the

On the rare occasions when she gets some free time, it should come as no surprise that Diana likes to spend time with her husband — veterinarian Dr. Scott White — on the water. “But, my idea of sailing is blue water cruising on a big boat. You don’t get wet and it’s nice weather,” she admitted. “But, I do want to do more racing in the future.” Andrew Spencer, a fifth-generation summer resident-turnedyear-rounder, has been writing about Nantucket since moving to the island full-time in 2002.
