Several years ago, it seemed like a “horrifying” request from customers. But, after 14 years of providing food, supplies and other goodies to pet owners, Jan Jaeger is not so horrified these days when asked if she carries little mice to be fed to hungry snakes. Jaeger said that summer is prime time for this rather unusual request.“People who come from off island seem to have exotic pets that we normally don’t have here.” Jaeger opened Geronimo’s in her newly built 119 Pleasant Street location in 1997.The building also accommodates a small office in back, and three second-floor apartments. Geronimo’s was named in honor of Jan and Fred's (Jan's husband) Chesapeake Bay Retreaver, Geronimo. He died in 1998. But prior to that was something of a fixture at the shop. Jaeger is also navigating her second season owning Cold Noses, another pet shop, in The Courtyard on Straight Wharf. Pictured with Jan is Mr. Chips,“our store kitty.”

I learned pretty early on that the most valuable lessons learned in college weren't learned in the classroom, but from interacting with other students. What is the most important invention or innovation that has happened during your life-time? Clearly the advent and advancement of the Internet.When I first started in real estate, we actually used to send and receive sales listings and rentals via fax and regular mail. Now almost everything is done via the Internet — email, PDF files, video presentations, you name it.The Internet has made it infinitely easier for brokers and customers to intereract on a much more informed and timely basis. What was the first house you bought, and why? The first house I bought on Nantucket was with my brother. It was a little ranch out by the aiport. We were looking for a fixer upper that we could afford. The listing broker was a part-time Nantucket lifeguard. She actually showed up to the showing in her lifeguard bathing suit.We made an offer on the spot. What is your favorite benefit to living year-round on Nantucket? Aside from the great history and the natural beauty of the island, with the ocean, beaches, conservation land, etc, it’s the people. I’m lucky to have good friends, and Nantucket has a really great sense of community. In the shoulder seasons and the winter especially, Nantucket has a really nice, small town feel to it. What is your favorite beach on Island? Ladies Beach. What is your Favorite Walk? Squam Swamp. It’s such a unique area of the island. It feels much more like being in the woods of Vermont, than being on Nantucket.

What do you do on a day off? I try to be on a boat, relaxing or fishing. Any day on the water is a great day.
