Their patience paid off when found their “dream property” on Fayette Street.“The bonus is that it is four houses away from the harbor,” says Tom.The couple closed on their new island home this week.The furnished cottage — which they named “Sea Oh Airs” in honor of Tom's father, C.O.Ayars Sr., who passed away in March of 2009 — has one bedroom and one bath with cathedral ceilings throughout.“It is compact, but the open space, high ceilings and double French doors to the deck give a feeling of spaciousness and light.” The Ayars have a residence in Bethany, Conn.They have both considered living and working on Nantucket, and would consider expanding the space and living there year ’round.Tom has a contracting business specializing in historic restoration and renovation. Kathy is Executive Director of Prevent Blindness Tri-State.“We enjoy Nantucket in all seasons and have visited in almost every month of the year,” says Tom.“We look forward to putting our own design talents to work when the season rentals are completed,” The property has weekly rentals booked through Columbus Day.

friend recently told me about her brother-in-law landing the job that, for people like me, is the stuff of dreams. I have no idea what the job qualifications were; I just know that I didn’t have them, because I’m still writing this column. You see, the friend’s brother-in-law was just named the Vice President of Communications for the NFL. Yeah, that NFL. Pretty sweet gig, no? Communications is pretty much what I do, and I’m a pretty serious football fan. So you can perhaps see why I think that I was, in addition to being much better qualified for the job, oh-so-much-more deserving, too. But alas, I didn’t get the job. Note to self: apply next time. It’s much easier to get a job that way. Anyway, communication is a pretty essential ability to have to function well in the world today, especially when you’re talking about real estate. There are a lot of terms you may or may not be familiar with. More importantly, there are a lot of terms you might think you’re familiar with but, when it comes right down to it, you’re not quite as fluent in the language as you once thought. This isn’t meant as some kind of disrespect towards you; it’s just a matter of fact that there are a lot of words out there for which some of us — in some cases many of us — don’t know the meanings. Part of the reason for this isn’t so much lack of formal schooling as it is the fact that there are a lot of terms specific to the profession that just get invented. Let me stray from the subject for a second to illustrate this point. My grandfather was something of a wordsmith who loved to play word games. One of his favorite ways of describing himself at a given moment was to say that he felt “gruntled.” Though you’re not going to find the word in a dictionary, to his mind, it was the opposite of “disgruntled.” Because he was taking off the prefix dis-, that meant he was negating the negative. So whereas someone who is disgruntled is angry or irritated, someone who is gruntled should be happy and content. Back in the 80s — when some of us were still in school — the term “dis” came to prominence as a verb. “Don’t dis me” achieved notoriety as a way of explaining to someone else that you would appreciate it if they showed you the respect you felt you deserved. The “dis” part was an abbreviated form of “disrespect,” which you’ll notice has that same little dis- prefix at the beginning. See how much fun English grammar can really be? Speaking of fun, it’s kind of fun to play this game, actually, when you’re a communications-minded kind of guy like yours truly. Feeling disturbed by those pesky nephews running around the house and throwing sand around on the beach? Try taking a walk and getting away from them to return to a state of being turbed. Feeling all out of sorts and discombobulated by the arrival of your aging parents on the island? Show up for dinner and leave without a lot of fuss and in no time flat you’ll find yourself feeling combobulated all over again. Who’s having fun now? If you’re a home buyer or a home renter, there’s a whole jungle out there of language you’re going to have to navigate. Closing costs, points, mortgages, notes, rental terms, the list goes on. You probably wouldn’t go drop yourself in the middle of a rain forest and try to find your way home without a guide, so why do the equivalent when you’re looking for a place to live? Find a guide to translate the language for you — they’re called real estate agents — and just watch how much more fun the whole process is. Building a house or doing renovations and repairs? Oy, vey, you’ve got terminology to learn. Joists and studs and flashing, oh my! There’s more to learn than you could possibly hope to figure out in a year, so hire a teacher who can walk you through the process. Those teachers are called contractors, and just like real estate agents, we’re blessed with an abundance of them out here on Nantucket. Both the real estate folks and the building folks that live amongst us out here are of the highest caliber you’re going to find anywhere, and part of their job is that of educator. They’re more than happy to answer your questions, so keep asking until all that jargon and lingo finally makes sense. But above all, let them do the work for you. It’s what they do for a living, not just once every fifteen or twenty years. They’re fluent in the language, so let them speak it. Trust me. You’ll feel so much more turbed, combobulated and gruntled. That’s what I’m talking about.
