here are certain things that can be counted in this lifetime. Death and taxes are two of them. It’s a pretty safe bet that I’ll be creative with my interpretation of journalistic deadlines. And, in the case of Jessie Glidden, her chosen profession was one of those things you could pretty much see coming down the ’pike. “My grandfather started the firm just after World War Two,” Jessie explained of her family’s law firm. “My father joined in the seventies, and then I came on in 2003. On some level, it was always a foregone conclusion that I’d be a lawyer.” Born, raised and educated on Nantucket, Jessie graduated from Nantucket High School in 1992, and went on to the College of the Holy Cross. After graduating from Holy Cross in 1996, she went on to law school at Boston College, receiving her JD in 1999. In other words, in addition to being typecast from birth as an attorney, she’s also one of those people who graduated from school on time. See above regarding my issue with deadlines, and you’ll understand why I’m a little perturbed by those people who

To fund their continuing operating and charitable expenses, however, the Society later sold their share of 9 Union to mariner Thomas Kendrick, who also purchased the remaining third from Temperance Green for $216, according to the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). he recent meteorological unpleasantness that swept across the country dumped a lot of snow on places like Minnesota. And when you’re talking about “a lot of snow’
in a place that’s accustomed to a lot of snow, you’re talking about a whole lot of snow. Enough snow to create a few highway closures and cancel a few schools to be sure. But also enough snow to cave in the roof of a football stadium. Seriously. The Minnesota Vikings date with the New York Giants had to be rescheduled due to the fact that the roof of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis collapsed from the weight of the snow accumulated on top of it. Now, before we get too far ahead of ourselves here, it does bear mentioning that the Metrodome does not have what might be called a traditional roof. It’s actually a two-part covering. The outer layer – the one that faces the weather – is made of Teflon, which is some pretty serious stuff. The inner layer is some kind of customcreated fabric. They pump hot air between the two layers to help melt the snow that builds up on the outside. On the morning of December 10, though, things went slightly awry in the whole melt-the-snow-off-the-Teflon plan. In what can only be called a scene reminiscent of a bag of sugar being poured onto a floor, the roof of the Metrodome ripped open, and snow began to pour through the opening. It wasn’t long before the roof had ripped in three different places, and the snow covered the interior. Amazingly enough, the field’s drainage system allowed the field to dry out relatively easily, and the only real damage aside from the roof itself was a light fixture that was broken. Luckily, it was five in the morning, so there were no people inside. Aside from the fact that we all got a pretty cool YouTube video out of the deal, this roof issue does highlight a pretty important issue that many of us either just don’t think about or, for some who have dealt with it in the past, consciously choose not to think about. That issue is the roof over your head. Literally. Roofs are the kind of thing we tend to not think about because they’re not right in front of us. You walk in your front door, the wall that needs painting is right there to remind you it needs painting. The darkness in the hallway reminds you that you need to change that light bulb you’ve been meaning to replace for a week now. That dripping sound in the bathroom cues you to get that new faucet this weekend. But your roof sits up there, sublimely doing its thing, protecting you from the rain and the snow and the other things that can make sleeping difficult when you’re being pelted in the face by them. But you don’t see it. It’s not sitting right there in front of your face telling you that it needs to be repaired. It’s not like that wobbly table you keep thinking about repairing every time you put a cup of coffee on top of it because you don’t interact with it directly on a daily basis. But here’s the thing. No part of your house takes the abuse that your roof does, simply because no part of your house is as directly exposed to the elements as your roof. Nantucket winters aren’t kind on anything – or any person, near as I can tell – and your roof is most definitely not immune to that. Have your roof checked out. We’ve got a lot of very good people on Nantucket who are very knowledgeable about all things roof-related. And I know this from first-hand experience, as I’ve actually written an entire article on slate roofs. So while not a roof expert in my own right, I do know we’ve got some experts right here in our own backyard. Take advantage of that. Use their expertise and let them check your roof before you find out for yourself what it would have been like to be in the Metrodome on that Saturday morning. And given that Christmas is right around the corner, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all my loyal readers a very happy holiday season. Celebrate carefully out there, and make sure you keep the lights unplugged when you’re not at home and enough water in the tree holder to keep it hydrated. If you think a leaky roof is bad, you ain’t seen nothing until you’ve seen a dry Christmas tree go up in flames. That’ll ruin your day real quick, let me tell you. So get your roof checked, have a great holiday and we’ll see you in the new year — in that order.

graduate on time. After graduating from law school, Jessie spent four years working as an attorney in Boston. But in 2003, the inevitability of life beckoned, and Jessie found herself back on Nantucket, firmly ensconced in her father’s law firm on Centre Street, assuming the throne at Glidden and Glidden, P.C., to which she’d been born. “My father is exclusively in real estate,” Jessie said. “I do a little bit of everything, but I’m primarily in real estate, too.” Despite the legal branches in my family tree, I’m not totally hip to the nuances of legalese. As such, I had to plead (I can get a rim shot there?) ignorance as to what specifically entails real estate law, and Jessie was kind enough to fill me in. “Usually when we see clients, it’s because they’ve made an offer to buy and that that offer has been accepted,” she said. “Some clients will have us review the offer before they officially submit it, but not always. From there, we take the accepted offer and create a purchase and sale agreement.” And for the uninitiated amongst us, that’s the point where the rubber meets the road and the accepted offer is binding. Their client base is what Jessie refers to as “a nice mix of year-round and summer residents,” supplemented by a group of international clients. “I think that because the dollar is what it is overseas, Nantucket real estate is a real bargain for our international clients.” Given her position in the equation of the real estate transactions on Nantucket, I thought Jessie
might be able to offer some unique insight into what she was seeing. “Things are definitely picking up,” she said. “We’ve been pretty steady with refinancing, but we’re starting to see a lot more sales. I think sellers are getting their minds wrapped around the idea that their properties aren’t worth what they might like to think they are. They’re getting used to the new reality of real estate prices on Nantucket.” Despite the up-tick in activity, Jessie also noted that she’s seeing many people who are having trouble getting financing from the banks, simply because of stricter regulations in the financial markets. Jessie was also quick to sing the praises of her fellow Nantucket lawyers: “The Nantucket Bar Association is made up of some really good people who work together,” she said. She explained how her experience in Boston had shown her that oftentimes lawyers in real estate transactions will tell the other side one thing, but then do something completely different. In other words, they’re the kind of lawyers you find in those pesky lawyer jokes. But, such is not the case on Nantucket, where the legal community is much more tightly-knit and friendly. And speaking of that tight-knit community, seven years ago, Jessie was approached by several members of the Inky Santa Toy Drive that provides a Christmas visit from Santa for local kids who otherwise would get skipped over. It seems that they thought that her services and knowledge — not to mention her philanthropic spirit — would serve them well. And as Jessie said of herself, “I’m a sucker for things like that, and I have a really hard time saying, ‘No.’” Today she serves as the organi-

zation’s legal secretary and also as a member of the Board of Directors. And about this time every year, she’s elbow-deep in wrapping paper, getting gifts ready for Nantucket kids. Living on Nantucket for 30-something years — and having been pretty intimately involved with real estate world for the last 10 — Jessie has seen some pretty dramatic changes in the market. “It’s cyclical, but that’s a universal thing,” she said. “When I first moved back to Nantucket, I didn’t think there would be enough business to support two lawyers in the office. Within three months, we had enough work for 10,” she said. “It was crazy. But I think property values are more realistic now. I don’t know if we’ll ever see those incredibly high values again; hopefully we learned from this last fiasco how dangerous that can all be.” Whether or not we see the sky-high prices of a few years ago, Jessie is confident about the future of Nantucket real estate. “Nantucket is a fantastic investment, no matter what you pay. It’s a special place where people have always wants to be and they will continue wanting to be.” I guess that means there’s another thing we can add to the list of inevitables. Their two sons, now 19 and 23, are the third generation of their family to grow up in the home. “They have their height chart in the closet downstairs,” said Sibley. “Our children are in love with the house, as are we.” The couple owns a business on the island, and both their sons graduated from Nantucket High School, participating in Whaler sports and working summers — one at the police department and the other at Nantucket Health Club. “What we love about being so close to town is it is a living community,” Sibley said. “It doesn’t close down every day like a museum. People walk by, they walk up Stone Alley. It’s just nice to be around activity and people.” Union Street was laid out after 1730, when Nantucketers excavated the coastal bank above, known as Quanaty Bank, westward to its current location to make room for Union Street. The soil material removed was used to fill in tidal marshlands between Union and Washington streets , creating several acres of new land for house construction, according to the HABS Orange and Union Streets Neighborhood Study. “Union Street was first paved with cobblestones, but those were covered in 1899 with bituminous concrete,” the study noted. “The street must have been a hive of business activity around 1830, for in addition to the warehouses, candle factories, ropewalks, etc. in the section below it, several of the houses on the west side of Union Street had thriving businesses going on in their high cellars. Elisha Green and Thaddeous Hussey conducted a prosperous ‘Soup House’ in the vicinity of Green’s home. In the house next door to 9 Union, there was a bake shop where several men worked making ship-bread or hardtack, a pure
water cracker for use on long voyages on whaleships….” Today, on this .08-of-an-acre lot, the current owners of Green’s house still have a high cellar in which the larger of the house’s many fireplaces exists. A cooking fireplace, Sibley said it’s obviously a summer kitchen used to keep the heat out of the upper floors. “I think we have eight fireplaces and we continue to use them now,” she said. “We could use all of them, but currently use the living room and parlor fireplaces. All the flues are separated from each other and they twist around each other going up through the roof in one chimney.” According to the HABS, the early 18th Century house is utilitarian in appearance without offending religion of its original Quaker owner. It has shingles on the sides and rear elevations, clapboards on the front, picket fences bordering the side yards, and an offset entryway and chimney typical of that period. The house experienced only three major changes during its 190-year existence. The HABS found that roof was probably raised in the back of the structure, that an ell was added, and Sibley and her husband built an addition onto the south side of the house in the early 1980s to adjust the interior of the house to 20th Century living. Although Elisha Green’s house continues to endure, the Ladies Howard Society only lasted 70 years, finally disbanding around 1908. But not before leaving a permanent mark on Nantucket still visible today. In an article entitled “Helping Hands, “ published in Historic Nantucket in 2001, writer Kate Stout noted: “Even so, it served the island for some 70 years, providing clothing and shoes and even, in 1872, mounting a campaign to provide "a home for destitute old ladies," laying the philosophical and social groundwork for such eventualities as Landmark House and Our Island Home.”

Malcolm Gladwell’s “What The Dog Saw” — fabulous!
If you could re-live a day of your life again, which would it be and why? The day my granddaughter was born. She is our first (and to date only) grandchild. Friends had prepared us for her to steal our hearts. What I was unprepared for was how I would feel when I saw my own baby boy through the glass of the nursery, tears streaming down his face, holding up his own little girl — monumental moment. I want to relive it over and over again — and I look forward to him and our other three kids giving us more opportunities to do just that! What about your days off? What’s your favorite Beach, favorite walk? On my days off I love to take a long walk past Miacomet Golf Course and down the sand paths to Lady’s Beach — my favorite beach! This walk in the off-season can typically allow me to have the beach all to myself. Priceless! What three current or historical figures would you invite to dinner, and why? 1. Paul Farmer – I have a huge heart for Haiti and have been to the Central Plateau to volunteer. I would love to glean from him how we was able to do so much with so little and what else can be done to help the people of Haiti. 2. A “woman of the house” from one of Nantucket’s 1700 homes. Having been in many of them these past weeks, I find myself thinking a lot about the women who cooked the meals, raised the children and managed their homes. I want to know their stories! 3. Jesus – I want to serve him dinner. Six things in your fridge now? Cheese of all kinds, grapes, an assortment of veggies, yogurt dill dip, cranberry pepper jelly and a chilled Sancere How do you help a buyer celebrate their new purchase? I’m currently the Director of Vacation Rentals so I haven’t had the pleasure yet of helping a buyer celebrate their purchase. But, I have loved watching my colleagues celebrate this very special event!
