O
ver the years I have learned that when somebody tells you there’s really “nothing interesting” about their story, it’s going to be a very interesting story. So when Bill Liddle, real estate broker and Principal at Great Point Properties, told me that his story was “nothing interesting,” I knew there was something there. Bill washed ashore on Nantucket when he was just a sixth-grader, and spent his formative educational years at Cyrus Pierce junior high. When the time came for high school, he shipped out to northwestern Connecticut to Kent. He graduated from Kent in 1986, and came back to Massachusetts for college, attending Boston College from whence he graduated in 1990. After graduation, Bill stayed in Boston and worked for two years, but in a story that seems to be something of a recurring theme, it wasn’t long before the shores of home beckoned and Bill returned to Nantucket. When he set foot back on Nantucket, he
immediately went into real estate. “I started with J Pepper Frazier,” he said, “and stayed there for eight years.” It was 1992, and things in the real estate market were, to say the least, about to get very interesting. “It was an odd time,” Bill recalled. “Nobody knew what was going to happen. We were coming out of a bad recession. But the market rose at a clip that nobody could have predicted.” In 2001, Bill joined forces with fellow real estate broker Greg McKechnie — who some people have accused of being Bill’s long lost twin brother — and together the pair formed Great Point Properties. From their humble beginnings on Washington Street, the firm has grown to be a major force in the local real estate market. In 2008, Great Point Properties merged with Edward Sanford’s Sanford Real Estate, adding to their already impressive stable of brokers.

Not one to rest on laurels and principal-ships, Bill is also the outgoing president of the Nantucket Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB). “The purpose of NAREB is to promote professionalism in the trade,” Bill told me. And they accomplish that lofty goal by working with an established code of ethics that, Bill said, “enumerates how we are to conduct ourselves.” NAREB meets monthly to discuss trends in the market and issues that impact the industry as a whole. “There’s a lot of cohesiveness in the organi-
zation, which is probably unique to Nantucket,” Bill said. “It’s a small island and deal with one another all the time. It’s just the nature of the business.” In addition to his work with NAREB, Bill is also active in both the Nantucket New School and the Dreamland Foundation, serving on both boards. And he also serves on the building oversight subcommittee of the Dreamland Foundation. But as Jack Nicholson taught those of us above a certain age, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, and real estate brokers are no exception. Bill is in the beginning stages of training for what he flippantly referred to as a “half Iron Man,” which he
said was something of a focus for the new year. Given that I seem to have an allergic reaction to exercise, the concept of a half-Iron Man is about as foreign to me as a full-Iron Man, but Bill explained. “It’s a mile-and-a-quarter swim, a fifty-six mile bike ride and a thirteen-mile run.” And yeah, apparently that’s what is passing for fun these days. What possesses a man to put himself through this challenge? “I’ve done sprint triathlons, and I did the Nantucket Iron Teams Relay last year as a solo competitor. I want to see if I can do it.” Better you than me, Bill. “It’ll be fun,” he added. “Or so I’m told.”
