hat a privilege it is to share the stories of so many interesting individuals! As we put together our final issue of 2019, several consistencies came to light. Of course this issue didn’t start out with an intent to include a common bond involving such a diverse collection of people, but that is exactly how it ended up. One of the most obvious threads evident on our pages is through the fearless females shaping new paths without concerns about the rules, the past, or even about what’s next. This ‘leap of faith’ mentality is nothing to fear, but one that those included in this edition embrace and are taking to the next level.

Kacey Musgraves definitely isn’t known for walking the line when it comes to country music standards. In fact, even though country radio tried to keep her music within conventional boundaries, she kept on honing her craft until she broke records on the Grammy stage this year taking home more statues than most male artists in the genre have ever dreamed of receiving. That same non-conformist attitude is apparent in Jessi Alexander. She’s chosen to avoid the hassle and red-tape of the old-school recording model to just produce the music she wants, when she wants. Like Kacey, it is her truth and her own path which sets a strong example for those courageous enough to follow. Even those outside of entertainment are paving their own way. Courtney Kivela Robinson left a comfortable and coveted top corporate position because she wanted more. Since taking that step, she has proven to be a true influence in the fashion styling world completely on her own merit and her own terms. The same is true of interior designer Hannah Crowell and clothing line founder Brittney Kelley. So many inspirational spirits have shared their stories with us for this issue, and we can’t wait to see what kind of impact it might have on those of you who are just waiting to follow your own dreams. All of these women share conviction and dedication to their vision, which is something I can personally identify with. I feel it in my own heart and experience it from those I work with daily. There is none of this self-serving business in our world, just an honest group of individuals who believe in themselves and in each other. Not only am I grateful to have that in my life but to see it in so many others influencing our community. It is absolutely thrilling to be sharing the stories of so many independent talents and even more rewarding to make friends along the way. I can’t think of a better way to head into a new year than highlighting these phenomenal trendsetters.

Acres One of the music industry’s most dynamic couples leave a high-profile NYC lifestyle for the joys of embracing casual elegance in the country BY STACIE STANDIFER PHOTOS BY ALAINA MULLIN

he story of Del and Carolyn Bryant is truly legendary. He was born into one of music’s most renowned musical families and she gave up her native NYC home to follow her two loves toward a less complicated existence. Carolyn claims that their 27-year marriage really was born from love at first sight when they met through connections of mutual friends in New York. The second love came along a few years later when their son, Tad, was born. It was from Tad's desire that their life overhaul began as he recognized the value of cleaner living at an early age. Carolyn attests the start of his curiosity stems from reading the Little House on the Prairie book series, which instantly prompted his desire for farm life. So, once Del retired from his position of heading up the global operations for BMI in 2014, they headed back to his roots to start a new chapter. They didn’t leave their sense of style in the city, but instead have closets full of designer frocks that speak to their years of attending events and working in NYC. But they also don’t take themselves too seriously, despite the family wealth and owning thousands of acres in Williamson County, as well as a home on Shelter Island. With an extended group of friends and visitors including wildly famous personalities, their home is in a way a reflection of Del’s childhood in Tennessee. “As children,” Del remembers, “we didn’t really realize that our folks were any different from anyone else’s parents, except that we knew they were home more. I grew up thinking everyone was in the music business. I knew there were firemen, doctors and lawyers, but that wasn’t who came to our house all the time.” Regular visitors included Don Gibson, Faron Young, Chet Atkins, The Everly Brothers, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Little Jimmy Dickens, Roy Orbison, Jim Reeves, Tex Ritter, Patsy Cline and Burl Ives. They were all in the living room at one time or another.

The couple does entertain frequently, and the house is filled with fresh flowers for impromptu dinner parties. However, their primary focus day-to-day is raising their son, Tad. “Having a teenager also gets you out of attending things sometimes, since we really are still in the phase of seeing to schoolwork and assignments with him,” says Del. Although he was born with some challenging health issues and has struggled physically to overcome them, Tad has been a driving force of the family’s activities from an early age. His ideas to help others are boundless, and he founded his own charitable foundation (HeadsUpPennyFoundation.org) at an early age. It is work for that growing foundation that now takes up the majority of Carolyn’s time as Tad attends school in downtown Nashville’s Templeton Academy. For a former Merrill Lynch broker, model and actress it is quite a switch, but one that she embraces fully. In fact, the entire family takes giving back very seriously as they feel that their heritage demands being proper stewards of all that they have been given. The most active party when it comes to extending that passed-down legacy is Del. Along with his brother Dane, he keeps charge of the countless tasks involved with protecting, promoting and honoring the musical catalogs created by their parents, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. While those names might not be instantly recognizable to those outside of the music industry, they are likely two of the most important figures ever to impact Nashville’s musical influence which is still thriving today. They were the first people to move to the city to develop a career in songwriting, which is hard to imagine now with a thriving community

of publishing houses and songwriters fueling our economy and creative scene. Thousands of songs including multi-general hits such as “Love Hurts,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” “Hey, Joe,” and “Rocky Top”. Their influence impacted every genre and their hits recorded by the world’s most famous artists are too many to count. Having so much experience with this musical legacy and the rewards it has offered to future generations gives Del a unique perspective on advising songwriters and artistic creators today. He is avidly against selling copyrights, with full belief that there is always more opportunity for a living work in the future, even if it isn’t presently evident to the creator. “You have to think of the value longterm, not in the cash value of the day,” he explains. “There is no measure of what a work could bring financially over 25 years, and songwriters need to think in those terms. Instead of thinking about what a song or catalog can sell for today, writers should put that energy into their next song. To have inherited the fortune that we have and to have held the copyrights over the years thanks to our parents is beyond fortunate, and we know this. There is tremendous gratitude but also responsibility.” He goes on to ask the question, “What do you do with luck?” answering with a chuckle, “well, you do what you can”. That is exactly what he plans to do along with Dane, Carolyn and Tad as they build upon the treasure trove of love and talent that they hope will continue to entertain and inspire others for years to come.

LEIPER’S FORK LIFE Upon first glance, it might seem that the Bryant’s home in Leiper’s Fork is the typical abode of a Williamson County family seeking a bit of space and solitude. But when entering the house after coming up the winding hill drive, it becomes clear that this is not your average farmhouse. While not large or imposing, it is laced with design elements that you might find in a well-appointed estate in The Hamptons or another metropolitan escape. Since moving to the area 5 years ago, Carolyn and Del have made this secluded spot their home by incorporating their shared sense of style and impeccable taste throughout the property while keeping their plan for simple living top of mind in every facet of the space. Carolyn brought in one of her dear friends, NYC designer James Huniford of Huniford Design Studio to design the interiors. With soft color palettes and statement art pieces, he created the perfect home for entertaining and family enjoyment. The impressive furnishings and accents may feel uptown, but a walk into the well-used farm-style kitchen instantly reminds you that this is the country. They enjoy harvesting a big garden and preserving the bounty in an expansive pantry. Cooking and baking are big household activities, as are canning and freezing produce from their own land. They also keep chickens for fresh eggs, with the flock easily coming when called for feeding and treats.

A YEAR OF CELEBRATION If you would like to experience a bit of what this legacy of talent is all about, there are multiple ways to see and hear firsthand all that their work has impacted over the years. Throughout Tennessee and beyond, there is much celebration of the Bryant’s contributions to music in 2019 and 2020. Much of that is centered around the fact that February 2020 would have marked Boudleaux’s 100th birthday as well as the 75th marriage anniversary for the couple. The Nashville community has certainly embraced the Bryant's legacy with a number of major recognitions. Currently, this includes an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame documenting the Bryant’s songwriting journey as well as a newly added BMI Award for their song “Rocky Top.” The Nashville Symphony is hosting a special evening in February involving their music and The Peach Pickers will be paying tribute to their songs at The Ryman and the Georgia Music Foundation in July. There is also quite a bit of excitement about the water element being added to the Musica statue at the roundabout on Music Row, with the fountains being named in their honor. Merchandise is also involved, including special boxed sets of recordings, some never released previously. A great deal of the proceeds from all of these efforts will go directly to Tad’s foundation and used for distributing to multiple causes in need throughout the area.

Ribbons & Bows How one Texas-to-Nashville girl is bringing entertainment home for the holidays BY STACIE STANDIFER | PHOTOS BY ANNE MARIE FOX Leave it to firecracker Kacey Musgraves to bring even more excitement and entertainment to fans after already having what most would consider to be an unbelievably impactful year. She blew fans away after taking home the Grammy’s highest honor, Album of the Year (in all genres, not just country album, which she also received), as well as a handful of others – collecting a total of four Grammys in one night! This was followed by winning an ACM award for Golden Hour in Las Vegas. She then went on to wow fans and fashion insiders with her Met Gala look for the Camp themed celebration. Transforming into a reallife Barbie, complete with the pink car, was an epic moment that will undoubtedly reside on style sites for years to come. All the while, Kacey has been on the road playing shows, including headlining the biggest music festivals in the country and making television appearances. The singer-songwriter has been featured as the cover girl for several magazines, including Marie Claire, Glamour, Paper, Billboard and Variety – to name a few – as well as a number of other publications and websites. In addition, she was honored to join forces with Willie Nelson for a fabulous live duet performance at the CMA Awards. And if all of these achievements weren’t impressive enough, Kacey managed to take home one of the CMA’s most prestigious accolades: Female Vocalist of the Year. Instead of taking it easy in the final months of 2019, Kacey has taken on another challenge that will likely introduce her to an entirely new fan base. This holiday season, her special, The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, streaming on Amazon Prime Video will certainly be ‘on-repeat’ in households everywhere, along with favorite seasonal movies that never get old. Her star-studded show includes an entire roster of famous friends and faces in a variety format, as well as music collaborations with Fred Armisen on “Silent Night,” Camila Cabello on “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” James Corden on “Let it Snow,” Zooey Deschanel on “Mele Kalikimaka,” and Lana Del Rey on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Kacey’s beloved Nana is even involved in the mix. With lots of sparkle in the wardrobe, relatable humor, and ‘Spacey Kacey’s’ version of holiday cheer, this special is sure to be the most-watched show on the streaming platform. Just like everything else she touches, people cannot get enough of all things Kacey, no matter what some small-minded critics may have said about her in the past. Kacey’s no stranger to critical voices, as she’s been appearing in front of people since before she was 10 years old. Since becoming a truly recognized talent in terms of awards and industry critics, Kacey remains true to her craft and to herself, despite a bit of backlash. Aside from her powerful songwriting, it is that authentic spirit that makes her such a fan-favorite. Mainstream country radio hasn’t been her priority, but if you do your homework, you will find that no one treasures the genre more. Just watching her video on the Country Music Hall of Fame’s website about the current exhibit (up until June 2020) in her honor demonstrates how truly humble she is at heart. Her mentors Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn weren’t always path-followers, either. Like the legendary icons that came before her, Kacey’s shaking things up, but for her own generation of followers. We love her for her daring style, the way she freely uses expletives, and for speaking her mind on topics from gun control to gay rights. Instead of conforming to the typical country music mold, Kacey’s paving her own path for the next generation to be more open in both their musical and personal lives. Who doesn’t envy that kind of influence? Our eyes will be glued to Amazon from now until January, soaking up her spirit via The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, which will be one of the best holiday gifts for all things entertainment this year.

Life After Loss Anastasia Brown talks to her girl crush contemporaries about surviving and thriving after personal tragedy BY ANASTASIA BROWN PHOTOS BY ALAINA MULLIN

n this Instagram era, a “perfect life” appears to be the norm. I know from experience, however, that that is far from reality. After losing a soul mate or a child, a job or a life you once loved, reality hits hard, the darkness sets in and questions abound. As I go into a deep dive with two women I’ve had girl crushes on for decades, we approach these emotional stories with the frame of mind of a survivor, not a victim. In all honesty, I believe our shared great loss is one of the reasons both of these friendships developed such an unbreakable bond. When I asked a Hall of Fame songwriter and a celebrity beauty stylist to open up about their stories, they were both hesitant. They pretty much echoed the same message: “I don’t want people to define me by my tragedy but by my creativity.” Well, they don’t have to worry because the creative thumbprints they’ve each already left in their respective industries are much more pronounced than all they’ve had to overcome. Nashville’s treasure Matraca Berg wrote her first number one song at the age of 18 and is one of the youngest inductees in history into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Nashville’s best-kept style secret, Melanie Shelley, was in Monte Carlo, Monaco, working with Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman when I did this interview.

songs for Tammy Wynette, George Jones and Nancy Sinatra, to name a few). They promptly co-wrote the song “Faking Love,” which was recorded by T.G. Sheppard and Karen Brooks. “We were driving in Mom’s car the first time I heard it on the radio,” Matraca remembers. Her mother pulled the car over and asked her how it felt: “It was surreal, and I wanted to give her that feeling so badly.” By the time Matraca was 18, that song had gone to #1 on the charts, and one year later Icie got sick. Matraca was 20 when her mother passed away, and her world changed in an instant. Her mother was only 40 years old. “I was so young when she died and we were extremely close,” she says. “She taught me how to write songs and live life. When she passed I lost my best friend, I lost my mother and I lost my writing partner. After I recovered from the initial grief, the one thing I could do to honor her was to do my music and do it well. That’s what drove me for a really long time—I wanted my mom to be proud.”

THE ENCHANTING TROUBADOUR When I first met Matraca Berg, I was intimidated by her and thought she was a bit snobbish; as it turns out, she thought the same of me. Then one day we were involved in a “fashion junkie” garage sale with several other local trendsetters. We ended up working the cash register together and our “girl-mance” began. But let’s rewind for a minute to before the awards, gowns and accolades. As a young girl Matraca essentially grew up on Music Row, surrounded by singers, writers and musicians. Her mother, Icie Calloway, moved to Nashville in her teens in the ’60s while pregnant with Matraca, to pursue a career in songwriting. In those days, a young girl didn’t raise a baby alone, so she gave Matraca up for adoption. Crying herself to sleep every night for a week, Icie returned to the orphanage to get her baby back. When Matraca was two years old her mother married nuclear physicist Ron Berg, who legally adopted her. Her mother’s songwriting career didn’t take off, so she transitioned into nursing, yet she encouraged Matraca to go for it. “I watched what it did to Mom’s soul,” she recalls. “She loved being a nurse, but she loved music even more. So I was very careful to avoid some of the pitfalls that held her back.” At the ripe age of 15, Matraca got serious about songwriting. Her mother taught her everything she knew, and they began to write together. While her mother wasn’t a hit songwriter, Matraca’s God-given talent was strong enough to attract the interest of acclaimed songwriter Bobby Braddock (who penned legendary

While the hits were adding up, Matraca found and married her soul mate, Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Then, in 2008, she got a call from the Songwriters Hall of Fame—she was getting inducted as one of the few female writers ever, and one of the youngest in history to be inducted, male or female. The blessings were flowing to this couple, proving that there is life after loss. O f c o u r s e, a s w i t h everything in life, change is always on the horizon. Fast-forward to 2017, to a time when they suffered more loss than they ever could have predicted. Jeff lost his mother, brother and son within two years. After 26 years of marriage, their foundation (and entire world) was on shaky ground. “The way we grieved was very different,” she recalls. “We couldn’t find each other. We were looking at each other like, ‘Who are you?’ We lost sight of one another for a while. It took therapy and time to find each other again. That’s when the healing started coming.” After coming out on the other side of that pain, Matraca has learned to fight her tendency to isolate, to get outside of herself and go do something for somebody else. “It’s dark in there if you stay in there all alone,” she notes. When I ask her about her future and the songwriters she mentors, she lights up. “I feel a change in the air—these young female writers coming up can play! And they’re all so beautiful.” When I ask her about her next record, she grins and responds, “I would love to make a record like Harvest one day,” referring to Neil Young’s masterpiece. My subconscious has already pre-ordered it. Let Matraca’s amazing life today remind us that we all go through peaks and valleys, but there will be a sun shining on the other side.

A SELF-PROCLAIMED VI S UA L A RT I ST FO R H U MAN S I met Melanie Shelley back in the mid-’90s when all we had were our dreams and innocent hearts. She had this amazing gift—the ability to really understand your hair, brows and face intimately and immediately. This is how she enhances beauty, by starting at the source. Brick by brick, hour after hour, Melanie eventually built the first fashion-forward salon for men and women in Nashville. Splitting time between NYC and Nashville for 12 years, she maintained a humble charm while importing high fashion looks into our then-small city decades ago. She never followed trends, but she definitely created them. In 1998, while tapping her savings and securing bank loans to establish the legendary salon and barbershop TRIM, in 12South, she fell in love with a musician. She knew nothing about him aside from his Scottish accent and his musical gifts. Love came fast and deep for Stuart Adamson, frontman and songwriter of the rock band Big Country. On the heels of several hits, SNL perfor mances and Grammy nominations, he was bold. “When he first asked me out I hesitated,” Melanie remembers. “I was still reeling from a breakup. We had an instant, deep connection, but I was scared. A few weeks after we met, he flew up to surprise me. It was happening too quickly, so I gave him ‘the talk’ to slow down. He went quiet, then he got down on his knees, took both my hands in his and said, ‘I want to be in your life forever, as friends or lovers. Whichever way it is, I’ll take it.’ His eyes were sparkling—I could literally see his love for me in his eyes. Something changed in me at that moment: I believed that true love was real. He was my best friend, just like he said, then he became my husband in 1999.” During Melanie’s early rise in her career, Stuart’s addiction struggles resurfaced for the first time in over a decade. Love sometimes can’t stop those demons, no matter how big the love is. What started as a certain love for Melanie turned into confusion, as Stuart sustained several unexplained disappearances, long stints in rehab and a frightening DUI that left her shaken to the core. One day Melanie was expecting Stuart to return home from a tour, but he never walked through the door. She had no idea where he was, so she began frantically contacting mutual friends and eventually the police, all to no avail. I was there during that sad period, and as I write this I’m crying. Thankfully, I was strong at the time, so I was able to lean in and support this amazing woman. To bring joy back into her life and celebrate our friend in a time of struggle, a group of friends planned a 33rd birthday party. On the day of her birthday, in the middle of her search for Stuart, Melanie slipped down a flight of stairs and fell onto a heavy iron sconce, which plunged into her back, impaling her so deeply that it collapsed her lung and nearly came through to the other side of her body, but thankfully missed her vital organs. While visiting her in the hospital, I saw the damage of her petite, speared body and I also saw her strength.

Then, on Dec. 16, 2001, Stuart was found dead in a hotel room in Hawaii. He had committed suicide by hanging himself—her soul mate and best friend. There was nothing she could have done; she’d tried everything and felt totally helpless. Despite both of these horrific moments in her life happening simultaneously, Melanie never complained and only felt concern for Stuart, never herself. How does one move forward? “Once I was strong enough, I dove into my work,” she recalls. “I thought if I could wake up and make art, the best art I could create, then the sadness would not be the biggest part of my life.” Fast-forward to today—as I interview her while she’s working in Monaco with Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, her life is different than she’d ever imagined. I start by asking her how she got her happiness back. “In hindsight, 20 years later, I realize I’ve lived the past 18 years of my life looking through a frame where only I can see, which is inside my loss,” she confides. “Everybody thought my life was in focus, yet I only saw blurry edges of lost love, keeping out happiness, holding new life at a distance. Recently I heard a voice in my head ask, ‘What if I wasn’t so sad inside? Who would I be?’ Since I’ve pondered that, I’ve noticed that the ‘frame’ is fading away. What a gift. I feel boundary-less, which is so freeing, but also risky. You don’t know what life will be without sadness. But you have to find out.” That was then, of course, and this is now. Melanie has never stopped working tirelessly, making sure her artists and all of her clients look beautifully authentic and, most importantly, relishing her most serious job, raising her twins as a single mom. When I asked her about her new norm, she smiled and replied, “I feel like since I started to see life through a brighter lens it made me feel more confident. When I’m dealing with highlevel clients, I speak my mind more. I feel like there’s wisdom in me about what works and what doesn’t work. The best way to serve is to be honest and direct. No kid gloves anymore. There is a reason that kid gloves are called kid gloves, and there’s a reason they need to be taken off.” Working with accomplished artists like Keith, Nicole, Martina McBride, Naomi Watts and so many more, she feels most fulfilled doing her part in keeping them rising on their journey. I asked her to share a pinch-yourself moment during this new chapter. There are almost too many to share. Working with Keith when he won an ACM and CMA’s most prestigious award, Entertainer of the Year, just last year is at the top of her list. Also attending the Prada runway show with Nicole Kidman during Milan Fashion Week is in the top 5, obviously: “There’s nothing more exciting than to be at the pinnacle of culture at the moment it’s happening and then to see your work splashed all over outlets across the globe,” she gushes. “I have so much more appreciation now for these opportunities, but especially for the people who are there to love me when I’m home just being me.” The music industry has lost too many loved ones this year. I believe that means we all need to create in their honor. In addition to Matraca and Melanie, I too have experienced great loss and the common theme to overcome it is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and engage in the present. Whatever it is that you do, during your darkest times, focus on creating the best that you can and giving outside of yourself. Tis’ the season, God bless you, your family and chosen family.

or this self-proclaimed ‘guy’s girl’, a day of trying on fashion selected by an incredible stylist and getting glam with the help of some of the city’s beauty experts was an unusual treat. From her crazy schedule at home with her boys to the typical co-writes that seem to include lots of testosterone, she’s an unintentional male magnet. That also applies when it comes to the artists that have recorded some of her most popular songs in recent years. If you’re a Blake Shelton fan, then you’re a Jessi Alexander fan, as she has written numerous hits for the chart-topper. But, her first real taste of on-stage success came from writing what is a bit of her own personal story in "The Climb" recorded by Miley Cyrus early in her career. Jessi’s name is well-known and well-received in all circles both on stage and behind the scenes in the music industry and she’s earned her reputation with spirit, grit and a God-given talent that’s evident whenever she picks up her guitar.

While the majority of her working focus has always been on writing hit songs for other recording artists, in early 2020 she is going to be releasing her own record in a collection of songs she describes as “country AF.” After listening to them on repeat, we concur on the country sentiment, but it’s the kind of music you just can’t help but want to hear again. Her voice is powerful, and the lyrics are powerful. While she didn’t set out to release a record, after finding herself coming up with song lyrics that were more autobiographical than a fit for another recording artist, she began to assimilate a selection that would represent her range and would also be a memory and legacy for her children. Luckily, she shares her home with one of Music City’s most acclaimed writers and producers, Jon Randall (‘JR’ to Jessi and his inner circle) who was a huge help and influence in putting the tracks together. While her typical routine includes lots of co-writes with outside contributors and teams, this project was personal and kept close to their hearts, especially hers. From the first track on the record, "Decatur County Red" which references her upbringing in West Tennessee to the up-tempo "Mama Drank", the songs are authentic to her craft and the background behind it. At home with international fashion personality, Courtney Kivela Robinson BY STACIE STANDIFER | PHOTOS BY ALAINA MULLIN

hen it comes to getting to know a new neighbor, I hit the jackpot with Courtney. At this moment, the backseat of my car is filled with an oversized bag of publications borrowed from her stash. She’s in the same situation, as we have a bit of an exchange thing going on. Until I met this energetic, well-traveled girl-next-door, I don’t believe anyone in my path has been as avid of a collector of print materials and photography as she has proven to be. Upon my first visit to her home, her framed Helmut Newton originals immediately caught my eye as they were resting on shelves stacked to the ceiling with the best magazines of the last two decades. Be still my heart! As it turns out, it’s not just a love for layouts, photo shoots and production that we share. In fact, one of our most interesting conversations entailed how much we both have dealt with in terms of a generation that simply takes so much for granted. While she was earning her degree and working for a demanding designer early on, she went for a full week without sleep. I can relate as when doing something I love, or was in a position to learn, I was always willing to do anything and everything to be involved. We found common ground in a background built on hard work, never asking for special treatment and just absorbing our surroundings at every opportunity. For Courtney, that involved a great deal, as her father (and biggest cheerleader) designed cameras and equipment for Kodak and moved the family to Hong Kong during her tween to teen years. From there, she would move to New Hampshire to complete high school before taking on the Big Apple at 18. She was accepted into FIT in Manhattan after only one interview and worked her fingers to the bone (literally on a sewing machine) until she earned a degree in Fine Arts. Since a young age, she’d dreamt of and worked towards a career in fashion, and she finally garnered the street cred to make it happen. What was supposed to be a short stint in London turned into a long-term stay. She landed a job at Harper’s and Queen (now Harper's Bazaar) while living in an amazing Notting Hill flat with 6 others. She eventually returned to the states at the insistence of her father. No access to a working VISA meant no real income, so her European adventure came to an end. After hearing about Condé Nast job openings in 1999, Courtney found herself in a position to interview with a few of fashion’s most famous editors. Ultimately, she accepted a job assisting a fashion market editor, which meant big budgets, fancy hotels and trips to see couture shows. As glorious as the whirlwind was, she knew that she was primarily drawn to styling, causing her to shift gears and work for a Glamour fashion director. By the age of 26, she had successfully produced her first cover. She proceeded to climb the ranks within the publication and focused on specialty content such as dressing for body type, which has turned out to serve her well in recent years.

When she reached a crossroads in her life, forcing her to either enlist as a lifetime editorial workhorse for the conglomerate or build a life, she chose the latter. A husband, kids and a freelance career that still included contributing to her beloved Glamour and other top fashion magazines seemed to be the perfect fit. Soon after going freelance, she developed an explosively successful apron and accessories line with her husband that eventually lead to styling for Food Network personalities. Nashville resident Martina McBride happened to be one of the most style-conscious cooks on television at the time, so the fit seemed natural. She admits she only agreed to move to her husband’s hometown of Nashville because she was "vulnerable and hugely pregnant" with her third daughter. Authentic by Design From her personal journey in a famous family, to the design for Nashville’s most anticipated new hotel, Hannah Crowell is an open book

When sitting down at a local coffee haunt with the naturally beautiful Nashville-based interior designer Hannah Crowell on a Thursday morning, one of her father’s (singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell) songs plays in the background. I wait for Crowell, whose wit is sharp and occasionally laced with snark, to groan or give me an eye roll, but instead she uses it as a springboard to reminisce fondly about her upbringing. Even though her family, whose members include mother Rosanne Cash and grandparents Johnny Cash and June Carter-Cash, is synonymous with Music City, Crowell insists she lived in a creative bubble growing up. Instead of church, her childhood weekends consisted of socializing with the constant stream of artists coming in and out of the front door. “The first time I understood how different my Nashville upbringing was from my peers was while eating with my ex-husband at a Baja Burrito and seeing five tables praying over their food,” she remembers. “That was my ‘what the hell?’ moment.”

Though Crowell claims she can’t carry a tune to save her life, and therefore never considered music as a career, performance arts were her path from an early age. You can sense the former actor’s theatrical roots in both her intensity and truthfulness. Crowell isn’t shy when it comes to chatting with her clients because she insists on being candid when it comes to her own life. “At age 40, I’m just now learning about mortgages and balancing checkbooks,” she says about the perils of learning how to be pragmatic in adulthood after growing up in a household full of artists. However Crowell, who came to interior design after the “soul-crushing experience” of pursuing acting in Los Angeles, always made her own way in the world. She isn’t entitled like many other famous personalities’ offspring. “After my parents’ divorce it never occurred to my dad to give me money, which has been such a gift because it made me hustle for everything I have,” she says. Similar to her father, Crowell has a killer work ethic paired with a head-in-the-clouds mentality, meaning she’s always pursued a passion if it struck her fancy. But while she’s grateful for the thick skin gained from auditioning, the Hollywood mindset of compromising one’s morals for star status didn’t sit well with Crowell. “I could have been cast more had I been bone-thin or slutty,” she says bluntly, “but being true to myself is and will always be the most important thing.”

Indeed, Crowell, who at times seems shocked by her own transparency, is incapable of being anything but. After marrying and moving to San Diego with her former husband, Crowell employed the advice of a life coach, Syrah, to figure out the next stage. “I probably should have been skeptical about someone named after a wine varietal,” she jokes, “but her exercises, which prompted me to visualize my perfect life, led me to this point.” Crowell decided she wanted to work from home and create beautiful domestic environments for others. She enrolled in the San Diego Design Institute and took on a curator position for the Joseph Bellows Gallery. In 2012, Crowell moved back to Tennessee to open her firm, Crowell + Co.

Looking back, Crowell admits that she always had a knack for sprucing up spaces. “As a kid I was constantly rearranging my room, and as a twentysomething I fixed up my crappy apartments by making tea towels into curtains and painting stars on walls,” she remembers. After her landlord stopped by and complimented her skills, asking if they could switch apartments, she realized for the first time that design might be a logical career choice. It had never crossed her mind before then. Not finishing her formal education is perhaps Crowell’s biggest ace in the hole. With an overly zealous attitude that can only come from blissful ignorance, she learned everything she knows from being on job sites, jumping in and just figuring it out. Her first and only business partner’s husband played for the Predators, which was another way in which

Crowell learned through baptism by fire: designing for professional athletes. Dealing with young men who had lots of cash and large egos at stake taught the young designer how to assert herself. She became adept at speaking her mind and helping clients shape their personal aesthetic. “As one does while learning in any industry, I felt my way forward until feeling fully capable in terms of my abilities,” she explains. Neither a perfectionist nor a planner, she seems to have embraced the learning curves that send many other creative types into a tailspin. Clients gravitate toward her quirky, playful aesthetic, which Crowell sees as ironic since she views herself as a more serious, driven type. However, no matter the setting, it’s always an honor in her eyes to be asked to design someone’s home. She enjoys figuring out who her client is and what they

want. As she chisels away at their identity, the interior design concept intuitively arises. It is through conversations learning details about clients’ lives that bring about her designs. Speaking about one of her favorites, someone who she considers family and has designed two houses and a hotel for, she says, “I know what side of the bed they sleep on. How much more intimate can it get?” Crowell, who’s been in clients’ homes during life-altering moments like births and deaths, treasures the vulnerability that comes along with those relationships. “I know everything about these people, where they put their underwear,” she says with a wink. She becomes entrenched in their lives, from finances to interpersonal dynamics, and likes it that way.

Similarly, Crowell, a single parent, has an intense bond with her two children. While she admits the mother-businesswoman balancing act isn’t always easy, she wouldn’t want it any other way. “My studio, which is in a converted garage and filled with the wonderful, eccentric women that make up my team, feels like a commune to me,” she explains. As someone more concerned with what kind of person one is rather than what they have accomplished, she is adamant about surrounding her children with positive role models. Recently Crowell took on her first corporate design project with the Virgin Hotel Nashville, which is launching in early 2020. Due to her frank and selfdeprecating nature, however, the collaboration was almost a no-go. “I told them I had never designed a speakeasy before,” she explains, “but they reassured me that they wanted someone who was objective and outside of the hospitality industry.” While the design process went off without a hitch, waiting months for approvals was weird for Crowell, who’s more accustomed to walking into someone’s kitchen if she wanted a “yes” or “no.” Nevertheless, Virgin was so pleased with her work they asked her to curate the artwork throughout the hotel as well as style common areas like the library, shag room, and restaurant. After going down an inspiration rabbit hole, Crowell came up for air, saw the final result and immediately thought, I want to design more hotels! Yet, while the project may have awakened a new design passion for Crowell as well as injected her with a healthy dose of confidence, none of it went to her head: “I don’t allow myself to go there, if you know what I mean,” she says. Growing up around celebrities, some lovely and others not so nice, is why Crowell is grounded when dealing with household names. Like a true artist, she cares about the task at hand rather than the famous face behind a brand. She’s too busy obsessing about fabrics to fret about what celebrity will stay in a suite that she designed. After all, Crowell, who comes clad to our interview looking West Coast chic with wavy hair, tank top and jeans, is most interested in the messy parts of life, as opposed to the highlights reel. Perhaps because being slightly off-balance is real. “I should go to yoga more often. I’ll likely never be the poster child for wellness, but I don’t care. As I told my dad recently, I’m really, really happy,” she says. Authenticity, to her, is true success.

first met Chad James when he was working with the late Landy Gardner out of a studio on Bandywood Drive in Green Hills. He was a young, up-and-coming designer fortunate to be working with one of the city’s most prominent firms. Shortly after, I started noticing more and more big-name projects with his credits involved. I knew it was only a matter of time until his light was shining too bright to share. Fast-forward a decade (plus), and he’s flying all over the country and beyond to complete major renovations and design projects from the architectural elements to the placement of the furniture. Out of his Edgehill Village offices, he is operating quite a design business and claims that a great number of his projects are no longer just in Nashville, but in affluent areas all over the globe.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t in full focus when it comes to catering to the lifestyle needs of his local fans and friends. Two of those people are music power couple Joe Don Rooney and Tiffany Fallon, who chose Chad and his team to create the perfect home environment that will hopefully serve them for years to come. He helped the couple find the right project, which turned out to be a French-style red brick with a tiled roof, circa 1930. “I saw that the home offered great possibility for their family. Once the home had been purchased, I embarked on an 18-month journey to restore and recreate the home that they love today,” says James. The lengthy project was well worth the result, which has an evident Southern aesthetic, but also an edgy vibe. Using bold colors and patterns along with dramatic lighting and modern pieces, it is an eclectic mix of past and present, reflecting the owner’s own personal styles.

This is the busy couple’s primary home that they share with their three growing children. As a member of the award-winning musical trio, Rascal Flatts, Rooney is often touring with his bandmates while Tiffany holds down the fort. She’s known in the music and entertainment industry as not only one of its great beauties, but as the life of the party and always showing up with a smile on her face. The couple is approachable and energetic, which is reflected in the choices that were made in decorating their living space. Music influences are peppered throughout since that’s of great importance to this household. Furnishings have a cozy vibe and are family-friendly with a nice contrast to the smattering of fine antique pieces throughout the house. Pops of vivid hues in accessories and the art collection are a nice contrast against the soft neutral color palette that grounds the house with a natural feel.

The Rooney household is just one example of how James can personally deliver to his clients on a level that speaks to their wants in terms of living and making memories in an environment that brings joy every day. Even though he may be on the road many days of the year (just like Rascal Flatts), we hope more projects like this are in the near future right here in Music City.

n a gorgeous but chilly night, one of the most exciting wine experiences associated with the offerings from The Nashville Wine Auction was held at the sprawling home of John Lotz. The Manning, which is one of the area’s most exciting luxury real estate developments, served as the hosts and planners for the evening, which included a number of personal guests and wine enthusiasts lucky enough to join the small group. What was meant to be an outdoor party was moved inside due to a dramatic temperature drop, but it didn’t hinder the spirit or the lovely elements a bit. In fact, it was even more intimate inside the cozy living room.

THE MUSIC: STING’s music was playing throughout the night and the only thing cutting into the playlist was a bit of live performance from Mary Spotts, who has been revered on stage at The Nashville Symphony. THE FOOD: Guests started with a cheese and charcuterie board featuring honey from the winery property. Chef Tony Galzin (of Nicky’s Coal Fired fame) created a lovely family-style Italian supper to compliment the wines. Items such as braised short ribs and roasted quail with dried cherries were served along with polenta and various vegetables. Dessert included a trio of samplings with flavors ranging from deep chocolate and passion fruit to bourbon caramel and pecans. Every possible detail was thought through and meticulously planned. The Manning’s internal team thought of everything from start to finish and were happy to share the details to inspire our own Italian dinner experiments in the future. Here are the highlights: INVITATIONS: Guests received specially crafted invites by local talent, Anna Geohagan of AEG Design. They were handcrafted, scrolled, and placed in a vintage-styled bottle sealed with wax. THE SETTING: A beautiful Belle Meade area home with neutral designer furnishings, ample gathering spaces and a lovely sound system. THE TABLE: Low arrangements of seasonally appropriate flowers by Forget Me Not Flower Shop and Designs lined the center of the long table covered in lightly textured sand-colored linens. THE WINES: For the first time, Nashville wine dinner guests got to sample bottles from ll Palagio Vineyards, the acclaimed brand owned by Sting and Trudie Styler. The wine host, Tony Sasa came in from Italy to join the group and lead the wine experience. Pairings included multiple selections within the bottles chosen for this evening.

THE FAVORS: Guests received an autographed copy of a STING CD along with a bottle of the vineyard’s olive oil. Both were creatively positioned at each place setting along with menus that mimicked the invitation design and coordinating place cards. While the dinner was one to remember and the wines were everything that guests expected, the most rewarding part of participating is the cause behind the event. For Beth Molteni and LaRawn Rhea, supporting local causes through their involvement at The Manning is a big reason to go above and beyond on this type of occasion. The ultimate benefit goes directly to the fight against cancer, raising millions of dollars for numerous organizations and health care facilities leading the charge. “The wine experiences curated by the Nashville Wine Auction are a big part of our fundraising. Each year we create about 25 different dinners, tastings and classes that range from $50 per person for classes to $5,000 per person for more rare wine interactions. Our Vintage 2000 Bordeaux tasting alone raised $100,000 while The Masseto Vertical raised $90,000, “says president of The Nashville Wine Auction, Holly Waley. We don’t know how much this particular dinner raised in terms of dollars, but we did notice some priceless friendships being developed as well as memory being made that will be valued treasures for a lifetime, very much like Sting’s music playing in the background.

In addition to lining up brides and getting venues decked out, I am decking my own halls, baking in my kitchen (really) and hosting friends for impromptu cocktail parties and attending those thrown by others. Being ready in advance is a lifesaver and starts with a plan. Hostess gifts are often overlooked or picked up last minute. While a package of cocktail napkins can seem appropriate, you should really branch out and make the host feel as though you actually thought about the gift in advance. It’s pretty obvious when things are an afterthought, and it’s nice to bring a token that doesn’t seem like you just blew the dust off of it after rummaging through your hall closet. Speaking of things from that closet... No one wants a candle, cookie tin or box of chocolates that’s been sitting on your shelf for months. Gifting isn’t hard people! Go through your calendar and mark all of the things you will be attending and take the time to get those take-along treats prepared and wrapped in advance. Having pre-printed personalized cards to enclose is a nice touch, and also saves you from scrambling for a way to ID your package as you walk out the door. Here are my favorite things to have on hand for hosts and hostesses that seem to have everything, which is pretty typical of my clients and friends. Happy Holidays, Hugh

If they have a pet, you may give a gift to the furry beast instead. People will really love you as the gift is gobbled up and they don't have to drag some token out to put on display every time you arrive at their door in the future!

Specialty teas and accessories are always graciously accepted. The herbal aromatherapy blends that are intended for night and evening relaxation are the best. Anything that helps people fall asleep is usually used quickly and appreciated.

Personalized notepads are always a hit. If you plan ahead far enough, you can do this for as many people as possible during the holidays. But you can just as easily get them with an initial or other motif that fits their personality. Quality is king here, though—we are not talking spiralbound scribble books.

Readers will love a fitting hard-bound release or biography even more when you include a luxurious bookmark (or one that is personalized).

Look for chic portable phone chargers (wireless) that can be popped into a bag or pocket for those you know are all about texting, social media and working remotely from their phone. No one can have enough of these on hand.

And yes, homemade treats are perfectly acceptable, as long as they are fresh, creatively packaged and you don’t expect them to be added to the cocktail buffet! And don’t even think about re-boxing something you bought at Whole Foods. The host always knows!

Sophisticated Creative cocktail recipes for seasonal entertaining BY STACIE STANDIFER

like my cocktails very much like my home’s holiday décor – somewhat festive with subtle and gracious nods to the season, but far from over the top. As I’ve gotten older, it seems that sophistication typically comes in a less obvious package. The days of crazy colored concoctions and labor-intensive creations are no longer on my radar. This change to less-is-more stems from a particular cocktail disaster when I hosted my first holiday party in my newly acquired residence in Richland House. I wanted every detail to be perfect and took great pains to think of clever ways to put the Christmas spirit into every facet of the celebration. Regretfully, I followed a trendy national magazine editor’s advice to serve martinis with crushed candy canes along the rims. They looked lovely for about five minutes, but for the remainder of the night, guests picked candy pieces off of their sweaters and suede. I found myself pulling it out of furniture and rugs for the next five weeks as well. Lesson learned.

Now, I am more concerned with things that are natural — not-forced and certainly not sticky. It’s about keeping things casually elegant and embracing the season as well as those around me, which usually involves libations. Just as we are using seasonal ingredients in our cooking today, we should follow suit with the types of cocktails we create. Embracing flavors and utilizing cranberries, earthy winter spices and other in-season citruses, makes every sip a bit of a celebration. Whether you’re hosting a group of friends for a weekend game or planning to cozy up in front of the fire, we’ve got a few ideas to up your mixology game for the long nights ahead. From light options to keep calories in check such as our Spirited Spritz to our holiday twist on the margarita— these offerings will never disappoint.

HIBISCUS HOT TODDY 1 cup of herbal hibiscus tea using individual

SPICY CIDER PUNCH 1/2 cup sugar 8 sprigs of thyme Bring sugar and equal measure of water to a boil to dissolve sugars. Remove from heat, add thyme and cover. Let stand at least 10 minutes to cool. Make ahead and keep refrigerated for up to a month.

size bag in boiling water per instructions 1.5 - 2 oz. of Nelson's Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey 2 Tbsp. of wildflower honey Generous squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Stir all ingredients gently to dissolve honey—and garnish with cinnamon sticks or other seasonal spices and citrus or apple slices. Serve piping hot in large mug or Irish Whiskey glass.

2 cups apple cider 1 1/2 cups Bacardi Dark Rum 3/4 cup fresh lime juice 1 tsp. Angostura bitters Club soda or sparkling seltzer Lime slices and thyme sprigs for garnish

CITRUS WHISKEY PUNCH 2 cups of Jack Daniel's 2 cups of strong black tea 2/3 cup fresh orange or clementine juice ½ cup fresh lemon juice

TAMARIND WHISKEY SOUR

¼ cup of fresh Meyer lemon juice

1/3 cup light brown sugar

8 dashes Angostura bitters

2 tsp. grated nutmeg

6 oz. Woodford Reserve Bourbon 4 oz. fresh lime juice 2 oz. Tamarind concentrate. Orange wedges/slices and bright red

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher, cover and refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Strain into punch bowl and garnish with nutmeg, cinnamon sticks or star anise and/or round citrus slices along with ice for glasses.

6 oz. Tequila Herradura Mix dry ingredients on a small saucer. Rub rims of festive glasses with lime and dip rims into mixture, rolling slightly. Fill glasses with ice. In an iced cocktail shaker, combine juices, tequila and jam. Shake well and strain into glasses.

6 oz. Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco 4 oz. cranberry juice 5 oz. fresh lime juice Generous splash of cherry liqueur Fill a large jar half full of ice and pour in all ingredients. Distribute the mixture in glasses over ice and garnish with a fresh sprig of green (like Rosemary) and skewered fresh cranberries or cherries.

THE SIDE One of the city’s top chefs shares a few of his side-dish secrets

hen it comes to g athering around the table during the holiday season, tradition often dictates that the meals revolve around a main dish. In some households it’s all about the turkey, where for others it’s ham. For very special tables you might even find a standing rib roast or some other gourmet presentation. While we’re not suggesting you break up any treasured family traditions, we believe that some of the most interesting and memorable items are not found at the center of the table. They don’t require carving and there’s little guilt involved post-feast. As we all focus on being as healthy as possible throughout the year, it seems only logical to incorporate as many vegetable-based choices as possible into our holiday plans. Doing this also helps alleviate the pressure of taking care of those with valued dietary practices, preferences or certain allergies. There’s also the fact that fresh, light and natural ingredients can be just as tasty as anything from the butcher. In many cases, they’re the dishes guests remember most.

In thinking of a local place that always keeps our veggie goals in mind, the first spot that popped into our heads was Adele’s. We count on their array of salads and vegetables offered on the wildly popular Sunday brunch buffet to keep our minds off of the pastry cart. So, when coming up with a plan for some incredible and unique dishes for our own tables, we sought the advice of Executive Chef Bron Lindsey on coming up with a few interesting options to serve all season. The timing was perfect, as he just recently developed some new items to add to the menu that pretty much solved our side-dish problems. Not only are they all different, but our plan is to be just as choosy as Bron when gathering the ingredients for our kitchens. He focuses on sourcing locally from reputable producers such as Palmer Farms, S.E. Daugherty and Sons and Green Door Gourmet Farms, but also pays careful attention to harvest times and schedules in seeking everything he makes. We are definitely following suit after tasting (well, devouring) servings of each of the three green-centric sides he’s developed just in time for annual celebrations. And in the spirit of giving, Bron has agreed to let us share the recipes he so thoughtfully created. We’re sure you’ll want to try all three more than once in the months ahead.

FRISEE SALAD WITH CASHEW VINAIGRETTE Adele’s Nashville Recipe by Chef Bron Lindsey

For Cashew Vinaigrette Yield: 2 quarts 3 garlic cloves 1⁄4 cup tarragon leaves 3⁄4 cup lemon 1⁄2 cups water 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 1 quart canola oil 1⁄2 cup nutritional yeast 3⁄4 quart cashews, toasted Blend cashews and nutritional yeast in a food processor until gummy consistency (about 3 minutes) and set aside. In a blender, combine garlic, tarragon, lemon, water, and xanthan gum. Blend until smooth. Slowly add the canola oil to emulsify. Adjust seasoning with salt and lemon juice as desired. Remove from blender and fold in cashews and nutritional yeast.

For Cashew Cheese Garnish 1 tablespoon toasted cashews 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 2 tablespoons lemon juice Salt Process all ingredients in blender until coarse. Lay out on sheet tray and let dry briefly or place on low oven for 30 minutes.

For the Composed Salad 1 head of frisee lettuce, washed and chopped 1 head of butter lettuce, washed and chopped 1 Fuji apple, sliced 1 watermelon radish, sliced thin 1 turmeric root, peeled, sliced thin and placed in white balsamic vinegar In a medium bowl, mix half frisee and half butter lettuce with apple, radish, and turmeric. Mix in 1/2 cup of cashew dressing. Garnish top of salad with toasted cashews and nutritional yeast.

THAI-STYLE GREEN BEANS Adeleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nashville Recipe by Chef Bron Lindsey

For Thai Coconut Sauce: Yield: 1-2 quarts 1 can of Chaokoh coconut milk 13.5 oz 1 teaspoon ginger, peeled and grated 1 large clove garlic 3 Calabrian chilis 1 lime, juiced In a blender, add garlic, chilis, oil, and lime juice. Blend until it forms a paste (you may need to add some water to assist). Shake up coconut milk in can. In a quart container, add the coconut milk and blended chili mix. Whisk until well mixed. It should be pink in color and have a light spice and acidity.

For the Fried Shallots: 1 shaved shallot, cut sideways to form small rings 1 cup flour 1 tablespoon bourbonsmoked paprika 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 cups canola oil In a large bowl, add flour, paprika, and garlic powder. Add shallots to flour mixture and toss until well-coated. In a large pot, add oil and heat over high heat. Add floured shallots and fry for 2-4 minutes, until just crispy.

For the Composed Dish: 2 pounds green beans 1 tablespoon olive oil In a medium saucepan, add olive oil and green beans. Sautee until tender. Add coconut sauce, cook until the sauce reduces by 1/4. Remove from heat. Transfer green beans to serving dish and top with fried shallots. Serve immediately.

SHAVED BRUSSEL SALAD Adeleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nashville Recipe by Chef Bron Lindsey

For the Lemongrass Vinaigrette: Yield: 1 1/2 CUPS 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds, toasted and ground 1 tablespoon lemongrass core, minced 1/4 cup lime juice 1 cup rice wine vinegar Place all ingredients into blender and liquify.

For the Composed Salad: 2 pounds brussel sprouts, shaved raw, paper thin 1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts, chopped 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/8 cup olive oil In a large bowl, add shaved brussel sprouts and raisins. Pour lemongrass vinaigrette over brussel sprouts and raisins. Toss until evenly coated. Put dressed brussel sprouts into serving bowls. If you haven’t been to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, this is the year to book the reservation. One of the Caribbean’s most treasured resorts is revealing a renovation unlike any other since its inception more than 50 years ago. The situation is unique as the resort had closed in 2016 to the dismay of many repeat visitors with plans to reopen with a fresh look and feel within 18 months. After damage from raging Hurricane Irma, those original plans were delayed adding years to the original schedule. Fortunately, the long wait is over as they are taking reservations beginning for stays in early January and have plans to dazzle guests with the transformations and improvements to the very special retreat. It is perhaps one of the most well-positioned and

EDEN ROCK, ST. BARTHS This ultra-chic destination has long been a favorite of international rock stars, fashion personalities and jet-setting influencers. The celebrations held on the grounds are legendary among travelers and locals alike. After incurring inconceivable damage along with the rest of this small island, the resort was closed for nearly two years. But after the rebuild Eden Rock has emerged stronger and more enticing than ever, with a number of added bells and whistles not previously enjoyed by their long list of VIP guests. The owners (who just happen to be in-laws to Pippa Middleton) were devastated by the destruction left in the path of Hurricane Irma but committed to making it even more legendary than before. What’s not to love about a ski destination that is so easy to access. With direct (and relatively inexpensive) daily flights on both Delta and Southwest Airlines in and out of Salt Lake City, getting to the resort upon landing will take less time than driving across Nashville on a typical weekday. This is such a fun trip to book over a long weekend without the transfers or long drive post-flight that many destinations involve. BEAUTY'S SURPRISING NEW HOTSPOT For quite some time, Brentwood’s most popular thoroughfare has been home to some of the area’s most followed and respected beauty professionals. Wellheeled Belle Meade women fell in love with Heather Chandler years ago when she worked on fixing faces in the former beauty department at the iconic Jamie location. At the time, this was where Woo operated its retail and service business before expanding and moving on to independent locations. When she returned to the area from New York after marrying acclaimed chemist John Kressaty, the two opened Skin Bar on Franklin Road and West Nashville fans instantly followed. The business is still thriving, with just a slight move further back from the busy street. They’re neighbors with Melissa Schleicher’s array of beauty and grooming havens under the Parlour 3 umbrella she established after years of celebrity styling. Businesses like these were not only warmly welcomed, but soon overflowing with appointment requests. As the residential growth has skyrocketed, so has the need for all types of services. Those living and working here are more metropolitan than is typical of the suburbs, and their expectations for city-living amenities are what’s prompted so many niche outposts of businesses to pop up. One of those recently opened in the Hill Center, placed near other neighborhood newbies like CycleBar and Clean Juice, is Drybar. This wildly popular chain was late to arrive

in Nashville with an opening in the Gulch just last year. Operating partner of that location Bonnie Willoughby knew from the start that she'd be opening a second location in Brentwood and sees it as the perfect fit. There’s no doubt that 37027 residents who don’t already have the easy-to-use Drybar app on their phones are signing up in droves for the convenient scheduling system that immediately links them to availability at the nearest location of the cocktailinspired blow-dry mecca. Drybar isn’t the only thing to be excited about. In fact, another popular hair stop, The Dry House, is opening nearby. Instead of fast and furious churning of chairs, local owners Alison Ryan and Cassidy Bentley see this extension of their beloved brand as a place where women come to escape, as they’re sure to find familiar faces for a fun visit. The Dry House is big on top-quality styling, but the community is just as important to the vibe, and with a loyal following that includes so many entertainment industry notables, a visit can feel a little like stopping by a backstage green room. But that’s what makes going such a treat. Brentwood is going to be even more beautiful with these additions to the local scene, which is definitely a good thing.

Floyd Mayweather’s namesake boxing studio, Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, debuted in Brentwood in November, marking the studio’s fourth location nationwide.
