VISUAL MAPS SUBJECT: URBANISM PROFESSOR: ARPAD SZABO STUDENT: NASTIA TSURKOUSKAYA The main aim of research is finding an imageability of surroundings of community centre “Aurora” (Aurora utca 11, 8th district). I asked 25 different people to draw me a map about “How do they usually come to “Aurora”?” People have been locals; tourists, who where in Budapest only few hours; workers; Hungarian and international students. But mostly maps have drawn by Hungarians, it is not a surprise, “Aurora” is a hidden place. Also people have been of different age (from 20 until 60) and have different professions. At first I had papers of small size, but quickly understood that people like bigger scale. Than I had A3 format of paper, different colors of pans and smile. I asked “where do they live”, “where is “Aurora” ”, “how do they usually go”, “which transport do they use or do not use”. I tried to guide a little and usually said something like “try to imagine your way. Do you remember some colors, smells, buildings, signs, shops…”I gave people options to choose a position of a paper, from where to start, use colors or just black pen. Usually I asked to concentrate more or less on surroundings of the place. People were enthusiastic! The most difficult part was how to start in this white big paper. At first I asked people, which I have already known, and I got exited! I understood that you can know a lot about the person, just to ask to draw a map. Some people prefer black color; some of them use only colors. Some draw every tree and flower, which they remember. Some knows every name of every street, but cannot remember any landmark. For some - roads with traffic are very wide in the map, because it is difficult to cross. For some – “Aurora” is huge, but their home somewhere very far away (even if they live next street)… From architectural point of view, the most well known parts of the area are Blaha Luiza ter, Rakozci ter, II Janos Pal Papa ter, Nepszinhas street. The area between Aurora utca and Rakozci ter is completely blanked (“chaos”, “poorness”, “next gentrification area”). Nobody exactly knows how many streets are there, what is there. People usually said me that they go automatically. The negative feeling have Blaha Luiza ter (which is “sad”, “dirty”, “smell bad”) and Nepszinhas street ( which is “weird”, “full of rabish”, “try to leave faster”, also “safe” (from the point of view of one man )). Many people feel Rakozci ter very pleasant, and they remember a lot of details there. II Janos Pal Papa ter everybody knows as a park with trees. The presentation and my research include 2 parts: 1) Maps have drawn by different people (in original positions) 2)Analyzing ( as general map of part of the 8th district; a map of inversion of the opened/closed space; a map of “from where do people come?”; and three maps of final result of research. The approach is based on “The image of the city” by Kevin Lynch. Budapest, 2016
