URBAN FLOOD

ECOLOGICAL NETWORK OF NOVOGRUDOK

Diploma project/strategic urban planning Novogrudok, Belarus 2018 Vera Sysoyeva Nastia Tsurkouskaya Urban flood and water contamination

The quality of the environment influences people’s desire to live on specific territory, not only in big cities, but also in small towns and villages. Therefore, the main objective of the project is to improve the quality of life in Novogrudok, a small town in Belarus. Since I focused on urban water issues, I analyzed the city’s water network – Neman Basin – at all scales; found out the generic problem of the region; researched existing methods of solving similar problems and adapted them to the Belarusian context. As a result, I collected a catalog of methods by city typology, which can generally be applied to any Belarusian city with similar issues. ANALYSIS OF THE TR ANSBOUNDARY BASIN OF THE NEMAN RIVER

Using ArcGIS tools, I came to the conclusion that the highest point source water pollution coincides with the highest population density — and this is a generic problem. 6

The Data for the project analyzes is taken from http://levis-gdb.sggw.pl/neman_pregolya/

NOVOGRUDOK

ANALYSIS OF THE BEL ARUSIAN CONDITIONS OF THE NEMAN RIVER

I determined that there is a conflict between nature and the urban structure. From cities located on the upper course of the Neman River, polluted surface runoff flows directly into the river as well as the reserves and forests of the country, which violates biodiversity and affects water quality in Belarus. Especially, the highest danger is represented by peak rain/snow loads in highly urbanized areas. At these times the flow rate increases and polluted water doesn’t have time to clean out, due to the lack of sufficient greenery on the flow path.

FR AGMENT OF MASTERPL AN

The masterplan of Novodrudok reflects my vision of it as a unique modern historical city with an attractive and “smart” landscape, which, in addition to its architectural and aesthetic functions, helps Novogrudok to be resistant to flooding and reduce water pollution.

The new development takes place at the site of the former shoe factory, named Wolfner. Having analyzed the pattern of demolished factory buildings, we brought the memories of industrial past to the new development through the sophisticated design of a public core.

Barauliany, Belarus “ALMEG” design “A-100 Development” Design of the block 2014 – 2015 (under construction) The project is consisted of architectural design of buildings, entrance groups and vestibule, parking and masterplan including courtyards and small architectural forms. The main principle of design is crossing strips of green and orange colors. My contribution to the project was design,3D modelling and visualization of the entrance accesses; 3D modelling of the whole project except small architectural forms.
