ANALYSIS OF THE TR ANSBOUNDARY BASIN OF THE NEMAN RIVER

PROBLEMS

After all I came to the conclusion that the highest point pollution coincides with the highest population density — and this is a generic problem. POINT POLLUTION

URBAN FLOOD

ECOLOGICAL NETWORK OF NOVOGRUDOK Project: Location: Year: Supervisors: Authors: Focus: Concept:

Diploma/strategic urban planning Novogrudok, Belarus 2018 Vera Sysoyeva Nastia Tsurkouskaya Urban flood and water contamination Quality of the environment influences on people’s desire to live on the territories, not only in big cities, but also in small towns and villages. Therefore, the main objective of the project is to improve the quality of life in Novogrudok, small town of Belarus. Since I focused on researching urban water issues, I analyzed the city’s water network – Neman Basin – at all scales; found out the generic issue for the region; researched existing methods of solving similar problems and adapted them to the Belarusian context. As a result, I collected a catalog of methods, depending on the typology of the city, which I applied to the masterplan of the city. It reflects my vision of Novogrudok as a modern unique historical city with an attractive and “smart” landscape, which, in addition to its architectural and aesthetic functions, helps Novogrudok to be resistant to flooding and reduce water pollution.

Based on it I determined that there is a conflict between nature and the urban structure. From cities, located upstream the Neman River, polluted surface runoff flows directly into the river itself, reserves and forests of the country, which violates biodiversity and affects water quality in Belarus. Especially, the highest danger is represented by peak rain loads in highly urbanized areas. At this times the flow rate increases and polluted water does not have time to clean out, due to the lack of sufficient greenery on the flow path.

ANALYSIS OF THE CONFLICTS

This analysis determines contaminated and flooded territories of Novogrudok, violation of water protection zones, sewage discharge points and free territories of the city with a conflict for possible interventions.
