From my

Kitchen table a note from the editor I am writing today from my couch rather than my kitchen table, healing from gallbladder removal surgery last Thursday. This is hopefully the last surgery for the foreseeable future & I am on the road to recovery & my long term health! My kids have taken very good care of me. In fact, today my 13 yr old made me the most delicious chicken soup from scratch including making the broth. I am so proud of her & elated she made me a few meals! According to the calendar, Ostara & the Spring Equinox is on it's way here in the Northern Hemisphere, however we still have several feet of snow on the farm! Despite that, I am looking at seed packets, plotting out a new veggie garden & expanding horse & alpaca paddocks.

I am also looking forward to celebrating Ostara & the Equinox this weekend! Have a wonderful week,

Spring Flower Essences By Amy Doeun

The time we are living in closely mirrors the period of time in which Flower Essences were first developed. The early twentieth century saw a rise in the field of psychiatry, World War I tested this field severely. World War I was essentially a vanity war fought by the ruling houses of Europe—who were all related anyway. While the gentry formed alliances and declared war, the common people suffered. In Europe this time period is known as the lost generation with some parts of Europe losing a whole generation of young men. Those that survived the battlefields returned with hidden wounds of the mind. Dr. Edward Bach was a physician in England. He realized that there was a need to not only treat disease but promote wellness. He also believed in the power of the patient to “Heal Thyself” as his book says, “IT IS NOT [his emphasis] the object of this book to suggest that the art of healing is unnecessary. . .

but it is humbly hoped that it will guide those who suffer to seek within themselves the real origin of their maladies, so that they may assist themselves in their own healing.” Dr. Bach then set out to find a remedy that would cure on all levels. The 38 original Bach Flower Essences were the result. Over the years many flower essences have been added to the original cannon. Barbara Olive says in her book flower essences for well-being that flower essences are vibrational energy.

She says, “To truly understand how flower essences work requires an acceptance that we are more than just a physical body, that we also incorporate a ‘body’ of life energy—a life force—a ‘body’ of sensitivity and feelings and a spiritual essence. Flower essences are the energetic imprints of the life force of plants, which interact with these subtle bodies of ours and have an effect upon us.” I like to say that flower essences are a subtle remedy that brings big results.

Spring Energy

8

When working with an energetic remedy it is useful for us to consider the energy that surrounds us in other ways. Easter or Ostara is the main holiday of the Spring season. This is the time of the spring equinox, meaning that days and nights are equal in length. It is a balanced energy that is tipping towards new growth. Many traditional cultures also mark this time of year as the official New Year.

It is the perfect time of year to start a new beginning and focus on growth. Patricia Kaminski of the Flower Essence Society urges anyone interested in working with essences to be mindful about their healing intentions, “conscious participation in the healing journey is necessary to gain real benefit from essences.” She also notes if you are interested in using essences with your children, “because children have not yet developed the ego structure or self-awareness of adults, it is appropriate for parents or other care-takers to choose essences for them. Nonetheless, it is helpful to engage children as much as possible in the selection and use of the essences.”

The following is a list of some of my top essence picks to promote new growth energy this spring— crab apple, violet and trillium.

Crab Apple Crab Apple is a pure and fragrant sign of goodness to come later in the season. It is one of the original essences of Dr. Bach. Winter is the season of hibernation (metaphorical death) with spring being the time of birth. Apple, according to Kaminski, “has strong mythological associations with Paradise.” For anyone who has gone through a long winter in the north, spring can feel very close to paradise. But for some people the focus is the part of the story where we were cast out of paradise. With this mindset it is difficult to have joy or experience paradise on earth. Feelings of shame and disgust at imperfections can be a sign that a person needs this essence. Kaminski says that it can be part of a purification ritual similar to fasting.

“This flower essence instills a balanced relationship of the soul to the body and to life on Earth, helping one to realize that it is only through suffering the pain of imperfection that the soul is afforded the possibility of true evolution, rather than static perfection.”!?

Trillium In traditional societies survival during the winter was not a given. The traditional name for the February full moon was, “The Hunger Moon,” or “The Hungry Moon.”

At this time of year, food stores were often depleted and with them the stores of personal energy we carried from the previous harvest. The chakra system is another energetic modality. The first chakra is associated with basic survival. Trillium is associated with this base of energy and is “an effective cleanser and balancer.” When our survival energy is out of balance we may feel that our survival on its most basic level is not guaranteed. The result can be hoarding in possessions or other forms of material wealth, power and even food. Kaminski says, “This soul imbalance can also be reflected in the body, especially when the body retains too much matter and does not effectively eliminate toxic waste.” Trillium reminds us that we have survived—that we are survivors. It is time to wake up and thrive.

Violet Violet is one of my favorite essences. As an herbalist I often see plants appearing just when we need them most. Violet reminds us that spring is about opening, growing and sharing the sweetness of life. After the cold winter it is time to embrace the warmth of the new season. Similar to Trillium, Violet souls are not sure of their survival, however their focus is on their sense of self whereas trillium is specific for physical survival. Maia Toll tells us that Violet is here to remind us to “honor your inner sanctum.” She goes on to say—

9

Violet understands something that most of us have forgotten; it’s okay to have a public face that is different from the one we wear in private. In fact, in order to deeply know ourselves, it’s necessary. You may think that you are being your true, authentic self by fully expressing each thought and feeling out in the world and sharing, well, everything. But overexposure will send truth scurrying. Befriend your truth in the quiet and dark. Become intimate with its contours and inner dimensions before you carry it out into the light. This inner work is the perfect growth of spring. Violet reminds you to take time to be alone, contemplate and rest—in short set boundaries and don’t run yourself ragged. It is not your duty to share all of yourself until there is nothing left.

How to take flower essences The way I was taught to take flower essences was using the dose dropper bottle to place 2-3 drops under my tongue 3 or more times a day. You want to make sure you don’t eat or drink anything at least 5 minutes before or after taking essences. They can be taken individually or you can create a custom mix.

Simple Spring Equinox Rituals by Shawn Michael Foley

The Spring Equinox is Monday, March 20th and welcomes in new beginnings and the energies of rebirth and renewal! This is the time to let the heavy energies of winter stagnation melt away and start waking up to the budding of new ideas. The Spring Equinox is also the start of the astrological new year, which is a powerful time to set intentions and plant the seeds of your future. This is a time when the astrological calendar begins anew, and we are given a fresh start.

In spring of 2018 I was training for my Reiki Master Teacher certification. During this time my fellow reiki master trainees and I were part of a Spring Equinox yoga & reiki experience. We each added our special nuance to the evening, mine being my botanical artistry. I created a beautiful floral mandala in the center of the room using fragrant spring flowers I harvested on the way there. I added crystals, candles, and essential oils as well to enhance the energies of the flowers. Every year since then, I like to create a version of this experience at home for myself. I’ve recreated it in a few different ways that I want to share with you to try in your own home. One year I made a flower crown for myself to wear while I meditated with crystals. Another year I created a crystal grid and enhanced it with blooms from pansies I had growing outside my home. Last year I bought myself 2 dozen tulips from the local market and simply enjoyed them in a vase in my office.

Whether you're practicing yoga, meditation, Reiki, or simply enjoying the beauty of the season, adding in the magick of flowers can enhance your workings in beautiful ways. The energy of spring is a powerful force that can help you grow and transform, so take advantage of this time and let it guide you towards new beginnings!

P.S. If you don't have anything growing in your immediate surroundings, try finding some bulb flowers at your local florist, nursery, or even your grocery floral department. I recommend tulips, hyacinth, daffodils, or flowering cherry or forsythia branches for your spring rituals. If you can’t find these specific flowers, just use what speaks to you and makes your heart happy. start.

Spring Tea Party by SM Harlow

SPRING IS IN THE AIR AND SO IS THE MAGICK! The Spring Equinox is a special time in the year where it celebrates the equal day and equal night. A major sabbat to honor renewal and rebirth along with the fertility of spring. The world stands at the threshold, living in perfect balance between the winter’s cold darkness and summer’s warmth and light. We shall tip across this doorway and into the light, filling our lives with fertility that awakens and blooms. The growing seasons now begin, as we too watch our lives flourish in the Sun’s embrace. Our time for balance is now. A moment to gather a clear sense of direction for the year ahead. Whatever you give your energy to now will grow. So, we shall give ourselves to the magick of Spring, while remaining open to the energies that which offers us grounding and strength. The most popular activities during this sabbat are spiritual cleansings, spring cleaning, and decorating a spring altar. Or, in this case, a tea altar!

Prepare the Space Items: ~Bouquets of clovers, daffodils, iris, jasmine, lemon balm, lilies, mint, and/or violets – enough to fill the space ~Gold, light green, yellow, pale pink, and white candles – just enough to set the mood ~Decorate with baskets, bunnies, cauldron/tea cups of spring water, chicks, ribbons, eggs, and budding twigs – to honor the gods and/or your ancestors, and create a magickal altar ~Amethyst, jasper, clear quartz, moonstone, rose quartz, and green moss agate – to bless and empower the feast ~Incense – grapefruit, jasmine, chamomile, and orange ~A decorated cloth of white, yellow, light green, and/or pink – blanket, table cover, or table runner

Prepare the Food Three-tier tray(s): Foods to honor and respect the spirits of spring First tier – ~Lemon Scone and Strawberry Curd with Clotted Cream ~Apricot Scone and Cinnamon Clotted Cream Second tier – ~Spinach Artichoke Grilled Cheese Sandwich ~Cream Cheese and Avocado Sandwich ~Goat Cheese Pesto and Arugula Sandwich ~Roasted Tomato Caprese Crostini Third tier – ~Plum Custard Cake ~Earl Grey Blueberry Tart ~Honey Lemon Chiffon Pie

Prepare the Tea Ritual: In a purified glass bowl, blend ~1 tsp White Tea ~1 tsp Jasmine ~1 tsp Rose petals ~2 tsp dried Raspberries

Blend each herb and imbue the mix with your energy and intentions. You may surround your vessel with lit golden and/or white candles to empower the blend. Add a teaspoon of the blend to an infuser or one to two tablespoons for a pot of tea. Surround the vessel/pot with clear and rose quartz. Heat your water to 175 degrees. Cover the tea with water and hold your hands over the brew. Focus your intent on what you wish for the season, filled with growth and balance. Brew for 2 - 3 minutes. Add milk and sweeten with honey if you wish. Just before serving, recite this blessing: We blossom as nature breathes new life. We are fulfilled with the life-giving light of the new Sun. We too shall renew with the awakening of Spring. Serve the pots of tea and cakes, sipping and absorbing your blessing. Partake the feast together with gratitude and laughter. Shortly after, a grand purification ritual should be hosted. Cast spells for balance, abundance, growth, new love, cleansings, and transformation. Create dedicated altars for the home, hearth, and family. Petition to your deities and ancestors and welcome them into your home, asking directly for blessings and warmth.

Correspondences: White Tea – cleansing, clarifying, aura healing, purification, psychic abilities, connection with spirits and deities, fertility, youth, new beginnings Jasmine – love, money, prophetic dreams Raspberries – protection, love Rose – love, healing, protection, luck, psychic powers, love divination
