Christmas Tour of Homes The Natchitoches Historic Foundation proudly announces the sites for the 2017 Christmas Tour of Homes available to visitors. Focusing on the expression of the Christmas season, all of the sites for the 2017 tours are located in the Historic District. Each day, the sites showcased are in walking distance of each other.
THURSDAY, December 7 & 14 “Christmas on the Cane” Ducournau Townhouse (circa 1860s) - 752 Front St. This is one of two commercial structures that includes a carriage drive from the front into a rear courtyard, a feature primarily associated with the French Quarter architecture in New Orleans. Damaged by fire, the building was renovated in the mid-20th century. Ducournau Townhouse occupies the second and third floors of the Ducournau Building. Gahagan House - 855 Washington St. Once owned by the late Russell Gahagan, a local attorney, this home showcases pure architectural elements, as much as it did 40 years ago. Visitors will be welcomed warmly into this newest addition to the homes on tour. Prudhomme Roquier House
- 446 rue Jefferson This Save America’s Treasures property, circa 1790, is the only known two and one-half story bousillage structure on the North American continent. Owned and operated by the Service League of Natchitoches, Inc.
Cunningham Law Office (circa 1860s) - 550 Second St. The Natchitoches Historic Foundation bought and restored this fine example of a mid- 19th century law office, housing five generations of lawyers over more than 150 years. The Law Office is decorated with period antiques and art, and houses the part of the Mildred Hart Bailey collection of Clementine Hunter paintings left to the Foundation. The office is beautifully decorated with seasonal and traditional natural materials, where docents will welcome guests with stories and information about the property.
FRIDAY, December 8 “Christmas Along Poete”
Once again, NHF will host visitors along Poete Street between Jefferson and Second Streets to highlight venues for Mrs. Claus with her cookies to decorate, Santa’s elves helping children to create ornaments from natural materials, dancers celebrating the season, musicians playing seasonal music, and other events for family fun. Additionally, houses along Poete will be open for touring.
Scott Corner House - 104 rue Poete Classic Creole style with West Indies influence, this three story raised plantation house has a double gallery, lower level brick columns, and hipped roof. The decor includes nearly 300 pieces of pottery imported from Poland, and Clementine Hunter art and relics.
Experience the charm of Historic Natchitoches during this annual holiday event Jefferson House - 229 Jefferson Street Located along the Cane River Lake in the Natchitoches Historic District. A Colonial style home built in 1967 by Jules Barre Cunningham Cottage - 305 rue Poete The Tudor revival (Norman) cottage is decorated with more than 100 nutcrackers collected over the years, representing a variety of literary, classical music, professional, and trades characters. A German pyramid complete with candles and revolving nativity scene is traditionally on the dining table.
Festival of Lights/Christmas Festival is presented by the City of Natchitoches and the Historic District Business Association.
SATURDAY, December 9 & 16 “Steel Magnolia Christmas” Steel Magnolia House (circa 1830) - 320 rue Jefferson Built prior to 1841, by Italian architect Trizzini and builder Soldini, this home was moved back from the street to its present location in the early 1900s. It was said to have been used as a Civil War hospital and a more recent claim to fame was the on-site filming of the movie “Steel Magnolias.” It’s the most photographed home in Natchitoches. Lemee House (circa 1830) - 301 rue Jefferson Decorated with period Christmas greens and historical memorabilia belonging to members and friends of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, Lemee will have a different holiday look. Guests will sip hot cider and listen to carolers as they hear about Christmas in the early 19th century. Trinity Episcopal Church (circa 1850s) - 533 Second St. The church continues to serve as a house of God going on two centuries. Beautifully adorned for the Christmas season with natural materials, historically significant pieces of art and communion vessels are shown. 800 rue Front St. The 27,500-square-foot museum complex provides a permanent home for the Sports Hall of Fame and its collection of portraits and memorabilia celebrating the achievements of more than 300 Louisiana athletes, coaches and other sports figures. Located on the second floor, the Northwest Louisiana History Museum explores the evolution of unique cultural traditions of the area from early native-American civilizations to the present.
