“After advertising in the ‘Eas t Grinstead living’ and having such good results, I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was prov ed to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! I’ve had great resu lts advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Do you need more space? Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to introduce myself, my name is David Penny and I am the proprietor of Woodstock Construction. My company has been established for over 30 years working for 20 years in London & 10 years in Sussex. You may be thinking about extending your home to accommodate a growing family, perhaps to provide more space so that you can work from home or improve quality of life. Rather than face the upheaval and expense of moving to find a larger home you can stay put in an area and extend instead. The cost of moving can often be equal to the average extension. Woodstock Construction has a team of highly trained & experienced tradesmen, having worked closely with architects over the years we know the exacting standards required for a superior finish. We can assist with both design and build to bring your plans to reality. We provide many building/renovation services including: • • • • • • • • •
Extensions Loft Conversions Kitchens Bathrooms Bespoke Joinery Sedum Roofing Flat Roofing - all types Pitched Slate Roofing General Building
Our prices are very competitive and we work to varying budgets & client requirements. Having completed many projects in and around this area, references for these local works can be provided. If you don’t know where to start or just need some helpful suggestions call us for friendly advice. Kind Regards, David Penny, Woodstock Construction Here is a testimonial: “We just wanted to drop you a line to express our thanks for a job well done. We applaud your team’s hard work and effort in the difficult climatic conditions of the winter of 2010 when the groundwork was undertaken. We have a marvellous extension which is a testament to your team’s diligence and your willingness to take on board the various changes as the project developed ! Please feel free to give our names to any potential customers who might wish to see an example of your craftmanship and attention to detail. Many thanks again, Amanda & Bob” Call today for advice and a free & detailed quotation: Tel: 01444 831269 Mob: 07961 123054 Email: woodstockcons@aol.com

Kitchens Bespoke of East Grinstead has won KBB Review magazine’s East Grinstead/Crowborough category for top kitchen installer in this area! For anyone who doesn’t know, KBB Review is a top national kitchen/ bathroom magazine for the industry. The KBB Review states: “Rachael Workman of Kitchens Bespoke had been in the kitchen business for 20 years before setting up her own showroom in 2008. Her background is in kitchen design and she sees this as her strength: ‘I’m not a sales person, the design is everything to me, but not just in terms of aesthetics, the practicalities are almost more important. I am a working mum so I know how it works.’ Then she showed me a bound copy of a design she was working on for a customer neatly presented with CAD images and costing. As she handed me her card, Rachael said that I can come out to have a look at the space and she could offer advice on what will and won’t work. Score 8/10 Rachael made a confident and comprehensive pitch.” As well as installing high quality kitchens to fit varying budgets, Kitchens Bespoke offer the following services: • Replacement worktops: granite, wood, Corian, Silestone & laminate. • Replacement sink & taps, doors & handles. • Glass back splashes – made to measure, in a large range of colours. A local charity rooted in our community
Hospice in the Weald supports people with life-limiting illnesses in our area Hospice in the Weald provides compassionate, holistic and supportive care for all patients with life-limiting illnesses, their carers and families. This care is provided free of charge, not as part of the NHS and £4million is needed each and every year to ensure the services can continue. Hospice in the Weald cares for people with other conditions, not just cancer and patients are a very wide age range, many are under 40. Recently the Hospice gained a new CEO, Rob Woolley. “I am absolutely delighted to be in this role at this most excellent Hospice and feel privileged to be part of such a special local Charity, which is at the heart of the community it serves.” Says Rob Woolley. “Briefly, a bit about me: I enjoyed a career in the RAF medical services and a second career as CEO in a number of charities, most recently at a hospice in Lancashire. I have lived all over Kent and feel privileged to be able to settle in the Weald.” When asked about the Hospice in the Weald Rob said “Our Hospice care is not just about a building. It is a way of caring for the people of West Kent and East Sussex, including most of the Ashdown Forest area – aiming to improve the lives of those
whose illness may not be curable. We aspire to help people live as actively as possible, after diagnosis to the end of their life. We not only take care of people’s complex physical needs, we try and look after their emotional spiritual and social needs too. We also support carers and families, both during the illness and in bereavement.”
CEO, Rob Woolley.
This care would not be able to continue without the support of the community by holding events, making donations and taking part in Hospice events. The next planned event is a black tie evening on Friday 18th February at the Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. The Red 8 event, featuring current Red Arrow Flight Lieutenant Dave Davies, boasts a packed programme of entertainment, including celebrity guests, a professional MC and former cricket commentator, Henry ‘Blowers’ Blofeld, who will entertain the guests with uproarious stories from the commentary box and life. This is just one of the many events being held this year for Hospice in the Weald. If you would like more information about the Hospice, events or ways to help support this vital community service please contact Amy Prime on 01892 820530 or visit www.hospiceintheweald.org.uk

My View of Ashdown Forest
I moved to Crowborough just over six years ago and as a cartographer by trade and a keen amateur photographer, I have taken a great interest in the landscapes of the area. Now semiretired I am able to walk my dog and spend time capturing the ever changing scenes on Ashdown Forest.
been pleased to help produce a series of footpath leaflets and a new tourist map of the Forest. The map is available for a small fee and the leaflets are free from the Ashdown Forest Centre at Wych Cross (also downloadable from their website, ashdownforest.org).
The Forest covers a large area of differing terrain, from open heathland with extensive panoramic views, to wooded valleys with a variety of trees, streams and ponds. It is served with a number of car parks, away from which it is possible to walk for considerable distances without seeing another soul and enjoy the tranquility of this South East gem.
I am giving an Audio Visual presentation of my photographs of the Forest at the Centre on 15th February at 3pm, details and booking via the Centre. I am also having an exhibition of my photography of the Forest at the Centre during February and March, open weekends from 11am to 5pm. GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.
Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Shrove Tuesday What’s It All About? Not Long Now..
PANCAKES
– don’t you just love ‘em? Crispy, sweet or savoury, thick or thin, the very thought makes your mouth water. Pancakes are eaten all-year round, but one date in the Christian calendar is always associated with this delicacy. ‘Pancake Day,’ or Shrove Tuesday as it is officially known is a tradition that’s been observed for a 1000 years or more. So what’s it all about? Shrove Tuesday derives from the Christian practice of shriving whereby a believer receives absolution for confessing their sins. It’s not only a day of penitence, but also a great day of celebration and merry-making. It was party-time – it still is in many parts of the world! Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to feast before Ash Wednesday signalled the first day of Lent. Traditionally, Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is a time to indulge, using up foods that aren’t allowed in Lent. In the past, observers of Lent might refrain from eating a whole range of foods such as meat, fish, fats, eggs, cheese and milk. Families ‘celebrated’ the arrival of Lent with a feast that consumed all supplies that wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent. Pancakes became associated with this as they are a simple dish which uses up all the milk, eggs and fats with just the addition of flour – and could be served in many different ways. Like Easter, Shrove or Pancake Tuesday is a moveable feast. It usually falls in late February, but occasionally is celebrated in March. No Shrove Tuesday would be complete without pancake tossing and racing, the origins of which go back to the 15th century. A housewife in Olney, Buckinghamshire is reputed to have lost track of time whilst preparing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday 1445. Summoned by the bell’s tolling, she raced to church, clutching her frying pan and wearing her apron. The village is now world famous for its annual pancake races. There are many traditions and superstitions attached to Shrove Tuesday. It’s significance has changed with time but religious festival or not, one constant remains – it’s a great excuse to pick up the frying pan and serve up a feast. Get out the eggs and have a cracking time!
