Before
After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

East Grinstead, The Dove Cote - c.1910
The Start of the Christmas Season It’s Christmas time again and here in East Grinstead, our trusty town traders are preparing themselves and their shops for the Big Reveal, the town’s annual unveiling of festive-themed window displays.
until 5:30pm and the High Street will be closed to traffic from 3pm to 8pm. It will be free to park in Mid-Sussex-owned short stay car parks (Chequer Mead and Queens Road), so look for signs by the pay machines.
This year, the Big Reveal will coincide with Town Mayor John Dabell switching on the Rotary Tree of Light and the Town Council Christmas lights. The light switch on will take place on Saturday 20th November at 5pm, followed by the Big Reveal at 5.10pm. Music from the EG Concert band will kick off the event at 4.30pm.
Traders will be raising funds for their chosen charity. Donate to your favourite window!
London Road will be closed to traffic from 3pm
After this event, and to build upon the festive shopping merriment, local choirs will be singing Christmas tunes and carols in the town every Saturday afternoon (3pm) until Christmas. We hope you have a wonderful start to the Christmas Season.

Local History Notes: U,V & W
Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum, brings us the next instalment, U,V & W, of her A through Z of local history.
West Hoathly occupies a position high on a ridge with views to the North and South Downs. It has a C13th, Parish Church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch, which contains a memorial to Anne Tree. Sometimes called “Mother” Tree, she was one of the three people martyred in East Grinstead in 1556. The nearby small hamlet of Highbrook, also has a parish church. The C15th Priest House, an open hall house, is in the ownership of the Sussex Archaeology Society and holds a small museum with many artifacts from the past including a handkerchief embroidered with the names of local suffragettes. Philpots Quarry is a valuable source of fossils, some of which are in the East Grinstead museum. The village was also the home of Jasper Vinall, reputed to be the first person killed in a cricket match. The Union Workhouse has been quite extensively covered in previous articles, so I will not say any more about that, but the Union Jack is another matter. Watching the Paralympics recently, I was fascinated by the flags, the study of which is vexillology. I knew our national flag is composed of the red cross of St George, superimposed on the blue saltire
of Scotland and the red saltire of Ireland. What I had not noticed before, is that the Irish cross is dislocated behind the St George’s cross. It is never explained anywhere that I can find. Does anyone know why this is? Union is the code of rugby football played at East Grinstead Rugby Club. There was a split in the world of Rugby over payment of expenses to amateur players in 1895. Most northern clubs now generally play Rugby League and the south, Rugby Union. The policeman and rugby coach who was shot on duty, Matt Ratana, just over a year ago, was a valued member of our local club. One of the most prominent of structures in East Grinstead is the Hill Place viaduct. Over seventy feet high, this Grade 2 listed structure, opened in 1882. It carried the railway to Lewes, and it remains in use to this day. It is an imposing sight to see the trains of the Bluebell Line steaming across it. Talking of railways, this is the time to apologise for a mistake in my last article. Alex Legatt sent me a note to say that Beeching Way does not follow route of St Margaret’ s loop, but the line used by trains leaving the High Level Station travelling to London.

Local Business Profile: Clare Mosley, Serenity Acupuncture Clinic What training/background do you have? Why did you choose to do acupuncture? My background is in Western Medicine, I qualified as a doctor in 2000 covering a wide range of hospital specialities before specialising as a GP for 8 years in the local area. In 2018, I embarked on my training as an acupuncturist because I wanted to offer patients a more holistic approach and give them the time and attention they needed. I qualified from the prestigious International College of Oriental Medicine here in East Grinstead. What benefits can acupuncture give people? Traditional acupuncture focuses on the individual as a whole instead of isolated symptoms and incorporates physical, emotional and mental aspects. Common conditions treated include: back pain, arthritis, aches and pains, digestive Issues, menopausal symptoms, headaches and stress. What can you offer your clients that they
might not be able to get elsewhere? My aim is to use my training together with the wealth of knowledge and experience I have from my medical career to bring patients the best care possible. I believe I can bridge the gap between Chinese and Western medicine with my unique understanding of both types of treatment. What do clients most like about the treatments they receive? Clients are given the time and space to address all of their issues and feel listened to. I am not just treating their symptoms but also looking at the root cause to improve their long-term health. Some clients even feel so relaxed that they will fall asleep during the treatment!

10 Ursula Hanbury was the daughter of Geoffrey Webb, the stained glass artist. She inherited Sackville House in the High Street from him, and in her will, she left this amazing property to the Landmark Trust. They let it to people for holidays which enables visitors a small glimpse into the way our ancestors lived. It also has a wonderful view over Ashdown Forest from its long “Portland” garden, one of only two remaining intact. The other is behind the Dorset Arms. Edward Varndell has the dubious distinction of being one of the first men to be deported to Australia. Where he lived is unclear but he was tried in East Grinstead in 1784. He had stolen two horses and was sentenced to death. This was commuted to seven years in Australia. He sailed on the “Alexander” a ship which was one of the ships which formed part of what was called the “First Fleet”. Whether he remained there, returned to England or died there is unknown. However, there exists a record of land in America being granted to someone of the same, fairly uncommon, name in 1792, about the time his seven years would have elapsed. Sidney Godley on the other hand was rightly proud of being the first noncommissioned officer to be awarded the Victoria Cross at the beginning of WWI. He was born at North End. In 1908 the vicarage caught
fire, causing disastrous damage. The very low water pressure was a factor in its destruction and so to improve this and to avoid similar problems in the future, a water tower was built in the Playfield, opposite Chequer Mead. It still exists, but not for its original purpose. It has been converted to residential use. I hope the tremendous views that can be seen from the top make up for the wear and tear on the occupier’s knees. Chelwood Vachery lies just off the A22. The name comes from the French, meaning a shelter in a forest for cows. It has also suggested that it was a hunting lodge for John of Gaunt. He must have had at least three in this area! It passed through many hands including those of the Earls of Dorset. In 1955 it was purchased by the British American Tobacco Company, as headquarters for their English branch. They sold it in 1994 and it is now a private residence. The grounds were landscaped early in C20th, specialising in rhododendrons, which
appreciate our acidic soil. The Wall Hill Mail robbery was an attack on a postal coach by a father and his adopted son, John and William Beatson. On July 19th 1801 they robbed the Royal Mail coach at Wall Hill. They tied up the driver and led the horse into the nearby field, taking the mail bags with them. They went through the letters for any bank notes which they took and travelled to Liverpool, via Westerham and London. Unbelievably, in this period with few communications to call upon, they were arrested in a public house, near the port. Taken to Horsham, for trial, they escaped but were recaptured and sentenced to death. They were brought back to the scene of the crime at Wall Hill and hanged in the very field where, they had opened the mail. It is variously claimed that between 3,000 and 10,000 people watched the execution. Next month I will have to go “off piste” as XY and Z are not the easiest of letters. Watch this space.

Fabulous new book about the Rainforest
‘My book is about a lovable toucan who wants to be the best at something. After spending all day trying, he finds out his friends love him just the way he is. In our current climate this is an important message for children to celebrate their unique qualities and feel happy with themselves.’ A copy of the book can be purchased at the Book Shop in town.
Clare Duffield is a primary teacher at Estcots school and has just had her first children’s picture book published, here she explains: ‘During lockdown I was providing home learning for my class and needed to find a high-quality text about the rainforest which taught comparative language. When I was unable to source a suitable book, I decided to write my own. This was initially just for my class but after sharing it with colleagues I was encouraged to send it to some publishers.

Combe Hill’s Surprise Since the beginning of lockdown, we have provided a place to meet, being a table and chairs for people to stop and be on their walks and runs. Over the seasons we have themed the table, Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter but with the coming of summer solstice the decoration became public art with the building of Loghenge, a scale model of the ancient stones in hand hewn Sussex timber. Whilst only intended to be up for a few weeks, the structure has now become a landmark halfway down Coombe Hill Road and is regularly visited by children wanting to visit the cows; small toys and figures that have mysteriously added themselves to the installation. What next? There is something dramatic planned for November, just in time for Remembrance Sunday, so watch the space... Best Wishes, Rod & Rachel

The Vision for Ashdown Forest An Introduction Below is taken from the introduction to the new Ashdown Forest vision that was published last month. We are facing pressing biodiversity loss and climate change emergencies which are already altering our world and Ashdown Forest. We all have a role to play in navigating these issues and Ashdown Forest itself has a critical role in responding to these challenges. As such we have created a vision for the forest for the next ten years. We aim to increase and protect rare habitats for the species that depend on them now, and those that will arrive as the climate changes. We must enhance our wetland areas to sequester more carbon to mitigate changes; we must be able to quantify this contribution. We also have a vital role in improving the mental and physical wellbeing of our visitors.
kings and commoners, to lords and land workers alike. Grazing by wild and domestic animals, alongside woodland clearance, created the original forest landscape. In the medieval era the forest became a royal hunting park within a 23 mile long pale or fence. Large areas were enclosed in the eighteenth century, with the remainder retaining its rights of common. Records show the battles waged to keep these rights. These fights, and the creation of the conservators in 1885, allow us all to enjoy open access to the beautiful landscape of Ashdown Forest today. Yet it is this public access that can lead to disturbance or damage of the natural
landscape. As the custodians, we are responsible for protecting the wildlife communities and spectacular landscape, especially the internationally designated heathland and valley mire areas, whilst also facilitating public access. This can be done through dialogue, careful management and appropriate funding. There have been significant reductions in our income from public sources. It is well known that East Sussex County Council are not able to continue supporting the forest with the large financial contributions that they made in the past. We will need to make bold and sometimes difficult decisions over the next ten years to ensure we meet our responsibilities.
Ashdown Forest is a living time capsule of culture and history. The internationally important heathland, alongside our woodlands, represent generations of human activity from all sections of society, from ©Craig Payne

20 We believe that a key focus will be on the health, physical and mental, of all our visitors, requiring considerably enhanced levels of engagement. The number of visitors increased greatly during the pandemic over 2020/21. We want to enhance the experience to provide a welcoming environment that is rich in wildlife, while offering activity and adventure and peace and tranquillity in equal measure. We will help our local visitors in treasuring the forest whilst assisting our visitors from further afield to create lasting memories. As a location that benefits hugely from local people and students’ research, we will strive for National Nature Reserve (NNR) status, the last major designation that the forest lacks. NNRs were established to protect some of England’s most important habitats, species and geology, and to provide ‘outdoor laboratories’ for research. NNRs offer opportunities to schools, specialist interest groups and the public to experience wildlife at first hand and to learn more about nature conservation.
In our vision we set out three aims: 1. Protect, enhance and broaden – this is all about the management whilst recognising that the forest does not exist in isolation. If the land around does not support biodiversity or allow wildlife to move, then it’s diminished. 2. Collaborate and engage – we want to work more closely with local communities, schools and anyone interested in caring. We cannot manage alone and there are so many local people with skills and enthusiasm who want to help. 3.
It is clear to all of us that this remarkable place needs our care now more than ever and our vision document sets out how we will start to honour that commitment. The full vision and strategy is available on our website www.ashdownforest.org

Once There Was A Bear To celebrate Winnie-the-Pooh’s 95th birthday, author, Jane Riordan has created a wonderful collection of new stories, Once There Was a Bear, written in the style of A.A. Milne, that take us back to when Winnie-the-Pooh was first purchased, from Harrods, for baby Christopher Robin. Illustrated with beautiful decorations by Mark Burgess and radiating the warmth and playfulness of the original stories. Here is a Q&A with Jane about her new release:
Illustrations by Mark Burgess copyright © 2021 The Trustees of the Pooh Properties and The Estate of E.H. Shepard
What are your early memories of Winniethe- Pooh?
is a bridge which we still call the Poohsticks bridge. I used to play Poohsticks there very calmly with my sister and sometimes in a much louder, riskier way with my naughty cousins – I don’t think that, like Eeyore, any of them actually fell in but they tried their best to!
I can’t think of a time when I didn’t know Winnie-thePooh – the poetry has been in my head for as long as I can remember; I had a record with a sung version of Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace which I loved because London was a very exotic and far-away place for me at the time.
How difficult was it to recreate A.A. Milne’s style?
I grew up in the countryside, with a river at the bottom of the garden and nearby there
It’s so distinctive and the characters have such strong voices that once I’ve decided
where to take them, it’s as if I can hear them in my head, worrying, in the case of Piglet, or bemoaning something, in the case of Eeyore! Sometimes it’s more a question of asking them to hush so that the plot can move on. But it’s not so much about what happens in a story, it’s more about the characters’ observations and interactions.
What influence do you think the Winnie the Pooh stories draw from the landscape of the Ashdown Forest? EH Shepard without a doubt drew all his inspiration for his illustrations from the Ashdown Forest. You only have to go there and open one of the volumes to see how the trees and

What would you say Pooh and friends most like about the forest? The answer would be different for each of them. Eeyore prefers the boggy places and anywhere where thistles grow. For Kanga and Roo it is the Sandy places and for Owl the tall tree tops. But for the key characters, Christopher Robin, Piglet and Pooh I think it would have to be the streams and above all the Poohsticks bridge!
What do you most like about this area? I love how wild it is and yet it’s only a short train journey from London. On a clear day you can see for miles and feel like you’re the only person in the world.
What are your favourite Pooh moments? In the original stories there’s something about the pathos of the Eeyore birthday story that resonates with me. When Pooh realises it’s Eeyore’s birthday and everyone has forgotten he rushes home to find a present for him, the detail I love is that he looks to see if he has ‘quite a small jar’ of honey … Of course, the bestknown part of the story is Piglet bursting the birthday balloon and Pooh eating the birthday honey but the pleasure Eeyore takes in putting his burst balloon in the jar and taking it out again, is so poignant and just brilliant.
What do you think made the Pooh stories such an instant hit? A.A. Milne was in fact already a successful
writer, primarily a playwright, before he became associated with Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh Bear first appeared in Punch magazine before having his very own book written about him! But the poetry collections that first introduced audiences to Edward Bear were instant bestsellers, as were the three books that followed it. At the time Europe was still reeling from the First World War and A.A. Milne’s poems and stories offered a safe place for readers – the Hundred Acre Wood – and let’s not forget just how funny the stories are – they were the perfect distraction for adults and children alike.
Why do you think these stories continue to resonate with readers? No matter how much the world changes, some things remain timeless. The Pooh stories have a comforting, gentle wisdom that reminds us about the importance of friendship and the joy of simple pleasures. These are ideas that speak to readers across generations. Winnie-the-Pooh: Once There Was a Bear by Jane Riordan, illustrated by Mark Burgess is now available (Farshore, £14.99).

Fennel & Butter Bean Stew 26
A good transitional dish as the weather is getting colder. Smoky and spicy.
You will need: • • • • • •
2 small bulbs fennel sliced 1 red onion sliced 1 large clove garlic finely sliced 2 tsp paprika Pinch of fennel seeds A tsp of liquid smoke (or 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika) • 400ml tin plum tomatoes • 400g tin butter beans • 1 tsp vegetable stock powder • Splash of cider vinegar • Large handful of spinach For the crumbs: • 2 tbsp bread crumbs, you can use GF bread if you wish. • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast • 30g chopped cashew nuts chopped Start by softening the onion and fennel in a large pan in a generous glug of olive oil. After about 10 mins add the garlic, paprika and fennel seeds, stir and cook for another minute or so. Then tip in the tomatoes and refill the can with water and add that too. Add the liquid smoke, veg stock and the butter beans. Leave to simmer for about 15 mins until reduced slightly. Then add the splash of vinegar and stir through the spinach leaves, leaving to bubble away for another 10 mins. To make the crumb I mixed the ingredients in a small frying pan and gently heated until toasted. Serve on it’s own, or this dish works really well with mashed potato or bread and butter.
This dish serves 2 people.
Enjoy x

Memories of a bygone childhood Holding on to a slim chance of success, 83-year-old Juliet Greves from Bolnore brought her vintage Kinora viewer to be repaired at Chailey Repair Café. This simple folding wooden device was invented by Lumière in France in 1897, and sold in the UK from 1902. It was based on the ‘flip-book’ principle popular with children at the time. By turning a handle, the Kinora reel revolves and the moving pictures are viewed through the eyepiece.
Juliet with the restored Kinora viewer In 1908 a camera was available for people to make their own Kinora home movies. Nearly a hundred years ago, in 1912, Juliet’s grandfather made a ‘family home movie’, which has been unavailable to view for many years. The team at Chailey Repair Café were able to breathe life into the viewer and restore to full working order. To Juliet’s delight, she was able to watch 4 children playing on a seesaw and swing, filmed in the back garden of her family home in Hull, East Yorkshire. One of those children was Juliet’s mother, then aged 12.
Mark, one of the Chailey Repair Café Volunteers who worked on restoring the Kinora
