I help people understand and then capitalise on the growth of an entire new industry: digital assets. Bitcoin in particular, is not going away, so my expertise allows people to build long term wealth & knowledge. I also help people safeguard assets, overcome technological hurdles and re-balance their portfolio with a focus on Bitcoin, other crypto currencies and stocks which will grow alongside the success of the entire industry. What is your particular background? I am a chartered accountant and have worked in financial services my entire working life assisting high net worth individuals and corporate clients. My cryptocurrency and Bitcoin journey began purely on a personal note some time ago but after years of helping friends, family and colleagues, my intention is now to focus my career on helping others benefit from what I consider to be a once in a species opportunity.
How do you structure your investment plans? I offer packages depending on the needs of a client ranging from semi detailed reports to more comprehensive guidance and a full stepby-step guide. I am happy to tailor a package to suit individual needs. Ultimately my level of guidance will depend on a clients’ initial feedback from a free no obligation consultation. Open Hands: Breaking the the cycle of poverty My name is Rebekka. As you may recall, I am the founder of locally based charity, Open Hands and have written articles for Ashdown Forest Living before. My charity works with the poorest communities in Romania to improve child welfare and end child neglect and poverty. We run a number of transformative programs, such as Rainbow House. I recently spent time in Romania: I know the story of each child we support and have often visited their homes - tiny places where hygiene is absent, toys are non-existent; and many children have to share one small bed or sleep on the floor. Open Hands works to change this. The Rainbow House is a Day Centre where children can recover from experiences of neglect, abuse and trauma. Children are cared for and encouraged to discover their potential. The children love being there, their lifeline and place of respite.
I once took a friend to Romania and we visited a very disadvantaged family where she spent some time with the children. Later we went to Rainbow House where the same children were there playing. I said to my friend: ‘Look there is little Florin playing’. She was shocked because she did not recognise this little boy. She said: ‘How can this be the same child?’ That was the moment when she realised the impact our work had. He was clean and content and unrecognisable as the child she had seen that same day at home. It is a privilege to experience that children thrive under our loving care. This month we began a new program called Lighthouse – a preventative program designed to supplement the state education of some of the poorest, it is all about breaking the cycle of poverty. The project is set in a building given to us by the local authority, to use free
of rent. Children come five days a week and receive a warm meal. Food and learning are integral parts of the Lighthouse Program. Receiving a healthy meal is important for the children as it is often the only proper meal they receive that day. On a typical Lighthouse Day, the children come straight from school, eat, learn and have lots of fun playing. We even celebrate their birthdays there. If you would like to find out more about Open Hands, follow us on Facebook (Open Hands Charity) or Instagram (openhands.charity). We have a local office as well as an office now in Germany and Romania. If you would like to support our work – you can donate by PayPal or directly to our bank account here: Account Name: Open Hands R/C 1136482, Account No.: 65412866, Sort Code: 089299. Registered Charity Number 1136482 Thank you for taking the time to read about our work and for your on-going support.

The Vision for Ashdown Forest An Introduction Below is taken from the introduction to the new Ashdown Forest vision that was published last month. We are facing pressing biodiversity loss and climate change emergencies which are already altering our world and Ashdown Forest. We all have a role to play in navigating these issues and Ashdown Forest itself has a critical role in responding to these challenges. As such we have created a vision for the forest for the next ten years. We aim to increase and protect rare habitats for the species that depend on them now, and those that will arrive as the climate changes. We must enhance our wetland areas to sequester more carbon to mitigate changes; we must be able to quantify this contribution. We also have a vital role in improving the mental and physical wellbeing of our visitors.
kings and commoners, to lords and land workers alike. Grazing by wild and domestic animals, alongside woodland clearance, created the original forest landscape. In the medieval era the forest became a royal hunting park within a 23 mile long pale or fence. Large areas were enclosed in the eighteenth century, with the remainder retaining its rights of common. Records show the battles waged to keep these rights. These fights, and the creation of the conservators in 1885, allow us all to enjoy open access to the beautiful landscape of Ashdown Forest today. Yet it is this public access that can lead to disturbance or damage of the natural
landscape. As the custodians, we are responsible for protecting the wildlife communities and spectacular landscape, especially the internationally designated heathland and valley mire areas, whilst also facilitating public access. This can be done through dialogue, careful management and appropriate funding. There have been significant reductions in our income from public sources. It is well known that East Sussex County Council are not able to continue supporting the forest with the large financial contributions that they made in the past. We will need to make bold and sometimes difficult decisions over the next ten years to ensure we meet our responsibilities.
Ashdown Forest is a living time capsule of culture and history. The internationally important heathland, alongside our woodlands, represent generations of human activity from all sections of society, from ©Craig Payne

12 We believe that a key focus will be on the health, physical and mental, of all our visitors, requiring considerably enhanced levels of engagement. The number of visitors increased greatly during the pandemic over 2020/21. We want to enhance the experience to provide a welcoming environment that is rich in wildlife, while offering activity and adventure and peace and tranquillity in equal measure. We will help our local visitors in treasuring the forest whilst assisting our visitors from further afield to create lasting memories. As a location that benefits hugely from local people and students’ research, we will strive for National Nature Reserve (NNR) status, the last major designation that the forest lacks. NNRs were established to protect some of England’s most important habitats, species and geology, and to provide ‘outdoor laboratories’ for research. NNRs offer opportunities to schools, specialist interest groups and the public to experience wildlife at first hand and to learn more about nature conservation.
In our vision we set out three aims: 1. Protect, enhance and broaden – this is all about the management whilst recognising that the forest does not exist in isolation. If the land around does not support biodiversity or allow wildlife to move, then it’s diminished. 2. Collaborate and engage – we want to work more closely with local communities, schools and anyone interested in caring. We cannot manage alone and there are so many local people with skills and enthusiasm who want to help. 3.
It is clear to all of us that this remarkable place needs our care now more than ever and our vision document sets out how we will start to honour that commitment. The full vision and strategy is available on our website www.ashdownforest.org

Fennel & Butter Bean Stew 18
A good transitional dish as the weather is getting colder. Smoky and spicy.
You will need: • • • • • •
2 small bulbs fennel sliced 1 red onion sliced 1 large clove garlic finely sliced 2 tsp paprika Pinch of fennel seeds A tsp of liquid smoke (or 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika) • 400ml tin plum tomatoes • 400g tin butter beans • 1 tsp vegetable stock powder • Splash of cider vinegar • Large handful of spinach For the crumbs: • 2 tbsp bread crumbs, you can use GF bread if you wish. • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast • 30g chopped cashew nuts chopped Start by softening the onion and fennel in a large pan in a generous glug of olive oil. After about 10 mins add the garlic, paprika and fennel seeds, stir and cook for another minute or so. Then tip in the tomatoes and refill the can with water and add that too. Add the liquid smoke, veg stock and the butter beans. Leave to simmer for about 15 mins until reduced slightly. Then add the splash of vinegar and stir through the spinach leaves, leaving to bubble away for another 10 mins. To make the crumb I mixed the ingredients in a small frying pan and gently heated until toasted. Serve on it’s own, or this dish works really well with mashed potato or bread and butter.
This dish serves 2 people.

Best Vegetables to Grow in Winter Avoid any food shortages and grow your own tasty vegetables this winter Winter can still be a very productive time in the garden, and when it comes to selecting which vegetables to grow there’s quite a bit of choice. From carrots to kale, onions to garlic and more, there’s a variety you can choose from. Depending on the vegetable, it may have a longer growing season and will be ready to harvest early the following year. Some grow faster though, so you can sow them this autumn to enjoy before the end of the year. Get planting now and soon you’ll be enjoying fresh, seasonal, home-grown veg year-round.
Turnips A great choice for their ease of growing. They can be sown and planted in early autumn (or slightly later if the weather is still mild) ready to be picked in winter.
Spring Onions Hardy varieties will grow well over the autumn months. They are a quick cropper, growing in about eight weeks. They are also small enough to be planted as a filler crop amongst other veg.
Spinach
Carrots Carrots are quite hardy, and can tolerate colder temperatures, even frost to a point. Sow in, preferably early autumn and choose a fast-growing variety. Keep them protected, the soil moist, and you’ll have a lovely harvest of fresh carrots to enjoy over winter. If they don’t come up in Winter, then they will by Spring!
Rocket Easy to grow and perfect for adding some peppery flavour to salads. Younger leaves should be ready to harvest about four weeks after planting.
Spinach will do well through winter, just cut what you need and it grows again. Ensure you remove the flowers to stop it going to seed which would affect leaf production.
Radishes There’s fast and then there’s radishes. They have an extremely quick growing time, only four weeks from planting! Plant in the ground and use a polytunnel if you have one to give them a consistent temperature and protection, then watch them grow!

Best vegetables to plant now ready for next year Peas
Onions
Peas are generally quite hardy, but round pea varieties are better suited to overwintering. Sow them in autumn and they will grow over winter for you to enjoy an early cropping of peas next spring. If height is at a premium, perhaps if you are using a polytunnel, opt for round dwarf pea varieties as non-dwarf varieties can grow quite tall.
Onions and their relative shallots are very easy to grow over winter, so much so that they practically look after themselves. They have a long growing season, so will be ready for harvesting next summer.
Asparagus Some love it, some hate it, but it does well over winter. It takes quite a while to establish, at least two years, but you will be rewarded with a crop that can produce substantially for up to twenty-five years!
Garlic Simply plant some cloves in the ground in autumn and you should end up with a full bulb from each the following year. Garlic actually requires a lower temperature to allow the clove to grow and multiply to form bulbs, so this really is the perfect time to grow them.

Once There Was A Bear To celebrate Winnie-the-Pooh’s 95th birthday, author, Jane Riordan has created a wonderful collection of new stories, Once There Was a Bear, written in the style of A.A. Milne, that take us back to when Winnie-the-Pooh was first purchased, from Harrods, for baby Christopher Robin. Illustrated with beautiful decorations by Mark Burgess and radiating the warmth and playfulness of the original stories. Here is a Q&A with Jane about her new release:

What are your early memories of Winniethe- Pooh?
is a bridge which we still call the Poohsticks bridge. I used to play Poohsticks there very calmly with my sister and sometimes in a much louder, riskier way with my naughty cousins – I don’t think that, like Eeyore, any of them actually fell in but they tried their best to!
I can’t think of a time when I didn’t know Winnie-thePooh – the poetry has been in my head for as long as I can remember; I had a record with a sung version of Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace which I loved because London was a very exotic and far-away place for me at the time.
How difficult was it to recreate A.A. Milne’s style?
I grew up in the countryside, with a river at the bottom of the garden and nearby there
It’s so distinctive and the characters have such strong voices that once I’ve decided
where to take them, it’s as if I can hear them in my head, worrying, in the case of Piglet, or bemoaning something, in the case of Eeyore! Sometimes it’s more a question of asking them to hush so that the plot can move on. But it’s not so much about what happens in a story, it’s more about the characters’ observations and interactions.
What influence do you think the Winnie the Pooh stories draw from the landscape of the Ashdown Forest? EH Shepard without a doubt drew all his inspiration for his illustrations from the Ashdown Forest. You only have to go there and open one of the volumes to see how the trees and

What would you say Pooh and friends most like about the forest? The answer would be different for each of them. Eeyore prefers the boggy places and anywhere where thistles grow. For Kanga and Roo it is the Sandy places and for Owl the tall tree tops. But for the key characters, Christopher Robin, Piglet and Pooh I think it would have to be the streams and above all the Poohsticks bridge!
What do you most like about this area? I love how wild it is and yet it’s only a short train journey from London. On a clear day you can see for miles and feel like you’re the only person in the world.
What are your favourite Pooh moments? In the original stories there’s something about the pathos of the Eeyore birthday story that resonates with me. When Pooh realises it’s Eeyore’s birthday and everyone has forgotten he rushes home to find a present for him, the detail I love is that he looks to see if he has ‘quite a small jar’ of honey … Of course, the bestknown part of the story is Piglet bursting the birthday balloon and Pooh eating the birthday honey but the pleasure Eeyore takes in putting his burst balloon in the jar and taking it out again, is so poignant and just brilliant.
writer, primarily a playwright, before he became associated with Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh Bear first appeared in Punch magazine before having his very own book written about him! But the poetry collections that first introduced audiences to Edward Bear were instant bestsellers, as were the three books that followed it. At the time Europe was still reeling from the First World War and A.A. Milne’s poems and stories offered a safe place for readers – the Hundred Acre Wood – and let’s not forget just how funny the stories are – they were the perfect distraction for adults and children alike.
Why do you think these stories continue to resonate with readers? No matter how much the world changes, some things remain timeless. The Pooh stories have a comforting, gentle wisdom that reminds us about the importance of friendship and the joy of simple pleasures. These are ideas that speak to readers across generations.
What do you think made the Pooh stories such an instant hit? A.A. Milne was in fact already a successful

Memories of a bygone childhood Holding on to a slim chance of success, 83-year-old Juliet Greves from Bolnore brought her vintage Kinora viewer to be repaired at Chailey Repair Café. This simple folding wooden device was invented by Lumière in France in 1897, and sold in the UK from 1902. It was based on the ‘flip-book’ principle popular with children at the time. By turning a handle, the Kinora reel revolves and the moving pictures are viewed through the eyepiece.
Juliet with the restored Kinora viewer In 1908 a camera was available for people to make their own Kinora home movies. Nearly a hundred years ago, in 1912, Juliet’s grandfather made a ‘family home movie’, which has been unavailable to view for many years. The team at Chailey Repair Café were able to breathe life into the viewer and restore to full working order. To Juliet’s delight, she was able to watch 4 children playing on a seesaw and swing, filmed in the back garden of her family home in Hull, East Yorkshire. One of those children was Juliet’s mother, then aged 12.
