Before

After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Local History Notes: O,P&Q Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum, brings us the next instalment, O,P&Q, of her A through Z of local history. As you can see, I decided to go with three letters this month and will do four (WXYZ) in December. Oxted is situated to the north of East Grinstead and falls into our area for collections. I include Outwood, as it is within easy distance of East Grinstead, although it is not on the museum’s list for some reason. Outwood is a small settlement in Surrey which has a pub that hosts Morris Dancing sides once or twice a year. It is a very pleasant way to spend an evening watching them perform with a pint in your hand. This traditional form of dancing has survived for over six hundred years. The most visited place in Outwood, however, was not The Bell, but the windmill. The oldest windmill in England was still in operation until it was damaged in gales in 2012 and 2013. It was selling the resultant flour to tourists, but not on a commercial scale. Set on rising ground to make the most of any wind, it is said that the red glow in the sky from the great Fire of London in 1666, could be seen from the mill. The Old Road, which was originally the only road to and from the south into East Grinstead, was by-passed in 1826 as the very steep gradient made life difficult for horse drawn carts. It was painted by Benjamin Latrobe in 1792, just before he sailed for America. There is a reproduction of his

painting in the museum. We were offered the original in 1996 but, at a cost of £25,000, it was beyond our means. The road at the junction of the London Road was lowered two years later, for the same reason. It accounts for the steps up to pavement level, in the High Street. The Old Post Office, an imposing Victorian building in London Road, still functions for storage and other minor uses but, sadly, the counter service has not been available for years. It closed its doors to the public just short of its centenary in 1966. The Old Lock Up, with its distinctive diamond window, is opposite Sackville College. For years it was used to detain prisoners for a short while before either release, if on a minor charge, or being sent to larger jail. It is now a private house.

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES: O,P &Q CONTINUED

The town can boast an Olympic gold medal winner. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the GB men’s hockey team won the gold medal. A member of the winning team was Richard Leman, who played for East Grinstead Hockey Club. Richard had also won a bronze medal four years previously in Los Angeles. The East Grinstead Operatic Society was founded in 1922. Although not able to perform during the pandemic, the last production being the well-received “Forbidden Broadway “ at Chequer Mead, in 2018. It is hoped that it will be able return to the stage in time for its centenary next year. Thomas Palmer and his son, also Thomas, were the entrepreneurs of the town in C17th and C18th. Thomas, senior, arrived in East Grinstead from Eastbourne. He came to take up the post of master at Paynes Grammar School, in

1775. Before long, however, he had opened a shop, selling stationery. He then expanded into insurance, printing and was the local correspondent for Sussex Weekly. His son joined him in his enterprises and wrote a rhyming directory of all the professional people and tradesmen in the town. They became quill pen makers and received a Royal Warrant for them. They proclaimed their wares by installing nibshaped windows in one of their shops at the east end of Middle Row. The windows no longer exist, but, fortunately, a photograph of them does. Pancake races, organised by the East Grinstead Observer, were held in Queens Walk in the 1960s and 70s. Open to groups and individuals, they were popular, especially with schools. References to pancake races can be found as early as 1445. Legend has it that they were started when a house-wife, who was late for mass on Shrove Tuesday, in Olney, Bucks, ran to church, still tossing the pancake she had been frying. Making pancakes was a way of using up any food in the house that it was forbidden to eat during Lent, which started the next day, Ash Wednesday. The ounce, an archaic name for a leopard or wild cat, forms a supporter on the alms of the Sackville family. A carved version is above Sackville College, which the second Earl of Dorset

endowed in his will. The ounce was in the original name of the Dorset Arms and is now, used in the name of the Wetherspoons’ restaurant in Little King Street. Perhaps “Tigger”, the bouncy tiger in the “Winnie the Pooh”, stories by A.A.Milne, falls into this category. What is certain is that the fame of Pooh and his friends, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl (Wol, as he himself, spelled it), and, of course, the ever pessimistic and gloomy, Eeyore, enjoying the freedom of Ashdown Forest, are still as entertaining as they were, when first written about in 1926. Long may their ghosts and their legions of followers enjoy a game of Pooh Sticks over that bridge near Hartfield.

Long, long wait soon over as choir sings together again!

East Grinstead Choral Society will once more sing together in joyous harmony when rehearsals restart after 18 long months.

While virtual rehearsals have been held on Zoom during the pandemic, members have been longing for the day when they can meet again in person at the Jubilee Community Centre. That red letter day finally arrives on Thursday 2nd September and new members would be made very welcome. Under the leadership of its new musical director Laurence Williams, the choir’s autumn programme includes a Baroque programme of two fantastic pieces: Purcell’s Come, Come, Ye Sons of Art and — in contrast, Handel’s O Praise the Lord with One Consent. Saturday 13th November also promises to be a memorable evening when the choir performs its first concert in front of an audience for almost two years. EGCS Chair Gill Olliver said: “The real power of a choir is in singing together which brings a wonderful sense of community, friendship and immeasurable benefits to mental health.” The choir were able to get together for an outdoor, socially distanced evening in June,

Congratulations!

We meet at last: EGCS Musical Director Laurence Williams with socially distanced choir members.

which was the first time that most members had met their new musical director. “For six months Laurence had been leading us on Zoom where he could see a screen full of faces but couldn’t actually hear us singing. It was very reassuring when we sang for him at our outdoor sing and he said what a pleasure it was!” Rehearsals take place at the Jubilee Community Centre, in Charlwoods Road, East Grinstead, on Thursdays from 7.30pm-9.30pm. The autumn term concludes with a Christmas Concert on Saturday 11th December. If you’re interested in joining, contact fmablett@gmail.com or visit the choir’s website www.egcs.co.uk. The England Hockey Women’s Club Championship final, held at Nottingham Hockey Centre, took place on Saturday 10th July between East Grinstead and Clifton Robinsons. The game became a high scoring event with East Grinstead prevailing to win the contest 5-3. The game was played at a high pace on a very hot afternoon. Three goals by Sophie Bray and one by Autumn Bowden saw East Grinstead go into the half time break leading 4-1. Clifton came back in the second half to make it 4-3 before Sophie Bray added her fourth to seal the victory. Congratulations to the whole team!

August is UK blueberry season. So, this is a perfect seasonal recipe.

Lemon & Blueberry Yogurt Cake

You will need: • • • • • • • • • •

½ Cup Yogurt ¾ Cup Milk ¾ Cup Caster or Coconut Sugar 3 Tbsp Neutral Oil (vegetable/ coconut) 1 Lemon: 3 Tbsp juice and zest of the whole lemon 2 Cups Self Raising Flour 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder ¼ tsp Bicarbonate of Soda ¼ tsp Salt ¾ Cup Blueberries (organic are tastiest!)

To a large mixing bowl add the yogurt, milk, sugar, oil, lemon juice and zest, beat together with a whisk until the sugar is well-combined. In a separate bowl weigh out the remaining ingredients (not the blueberries) and mix together. The dry mixture can then be folded into the wet with a wooden spoon. Once combined add in most of the blueberries but save some to poke into the top of the batter once in the tin so they are evenly distributed throughout the sponge. Give your plants

a holiday too! and move houseplants away from sunny windowsills and into shadier spots.

Add Pot Saucers

Any excess water will stay in the saucer and be reabsorbed back into the soil.

If you are going away this summer, spare a thought for your plants, who will be having a staycation. To treat your plants with love and care before you go, here are some hydration tips:

Mulch

Place a layer of mulch (bark or straw-based compost) around your plants over well-watered soil. Mulch also helps keep weeds at bay.

Place pots in the shade

Use a Tap Mounted Watering Controller You can set it to the times you choose daily.

Add Moisture Retaining Crystals Mix in compost at the time of planting. The crystals absorb moisture and lock it away until the compost around it becomes dry, then the gel releases the water. Perfect for baskets, pots and containers.

Have A Bath

Soak some towels in water and line the bath or sink with them, then place your plants on top.

Move plants in pots into the shade, and place

Take time to enjoy all the life your garden protects and fosters.

Windmill places they are ‘sails’) to ease the pressure on the post. Two shutter sweeps looked to be beyond repair and had to be replaced – they dated from 1973, so the feeling was that they had lasted well. This meant building new ones, a task our restorers had not attempted before. It’s not straightforward; the sweeps are some 7 metres long by 2 metres wide, with an aerodynamic twist in them. Using the old sweeps as a pattern, our volunteers managed to create replacements, and were ready to replace them when lockdown stopped all work. In due course, the sweeps were replaced on the front

An old windmill needs a lot of attention, and Nutley Windmill is maintained by our group of expert volunteers. It is an open trestle post mill. The massive wooden post runs up the centre of the mill, while the trestles form the wooden framework on which the body of the mill sits. Wear and tear can lead to what our volunteers call ‘head sickness’, with the weight of the sweeps tending to pull the post forward. This could cause the mill to lean, with the risk that the turning sweeps could clip the trestles, with potentially disastrous consequences. Our volunteers have sought to avoid this. In 2019 they removed the sweeps (in Sussex they are ‘sweeps’, in other

24 of the mill. There was a certain amount of tension once the operation was completed – would they turn freely? A volunteer summed up everyone’s feelings ‘… the moment of truth, on a windy day we released the strops and brake, turned the mill into the wind, and held our breath as the sweeps slowly started to turn – great feelings of joy, pride and relief!’ Everything worked as it should – was there ever any doubt? What of the future? Grinding flour? That’s the dream, but not yet. Next year…? For now, we would be delighted to see you at one of our open days. These are on 29 & 30 August, 26 September and 10 October, from 2-30 to 5-30 pm. The mill is in Crowborough Road, Nutley, so if you park at Friends Clump, follow the footpath to the

mill. We may not be able to invite you inside (social distancing inside the mill is impossible) but we do aim to have the sweeps turning, which will mean physically turning the mill so the sweeps catch the wind. There is no charge, but we are always grateful for donations to help with the restoration costs – and, a new addition this year, you can donate by text! Toilets are available on site. The open days are, of course, dependent on the weather, and we still have to keep an eye out for the virus, but what could be better than a sunny day on Ashdown Forest watching some of the oldest technology known to man at work. Nutley windmill is owned by Uckfield & District Preservation Society. For more information visit www. bridgecottageuckfield.co.uk, and click on ‘Nutley Windmill’.

A Home for Wildlife

We all know that Ashdown Forest is a home to huge variety of plants and animals, some of which are familiar to us but many more are unknown, overlooked or quite rare. So how do we know what is here? The forest is so big that it is impossible for us to survey every part of it for plants, animals and fungi but we are fortunate to know a lot of experts, specialists and amateur enthusiasts who are keen to share their sightings with us. We recently hosted a BBQ for a small group of wildlife recorders who came along to share their ideas and knowledge with us. Their expertise included spiders, insects, bryophytes, plants, birds and much more. It was a fascinating evening, and we hope this will be the start of some cross-partnership working with Butterfly Conservation, Sussex Botanical Society, Species Recovery Trust © Ashley Payne Meadow Brown Butterfly–

Meadow Brown Butterfly – © Ashley Payne

and others, to help us monitor the species of Ashdown Forest. Continuing the wildlife theme, the results from our nightjar survey in June suggest that there were at least 37 male nightjars on the forest. Given that the conditions were not perfect, we estimate there will be more than we managed to record. A bonus for wildlife watching after dark is that you also get to see other unusual species - glow-worms, woodcock and bats were spotted too. Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped us with this survey – it is a great result. Another specialist heathland species that is only slightly easier to see is the rare silverstudded blue butterfly. This small butterfly can be seen flying low over the flowering heather and will sometimes roost on grass tussocks in the late afternoon. Its numbers are declining nationally, and we will be liaising with our local butterfly experts to monitor the population on Ashdown Forest and to increase the amount of suitable habitat to help the butterflies thrive.
