Before

After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Local History Notes: X,Y & Z Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum, brings us the last instalment, X, Y & Z, of her A through Z of local history.

As I briefly touched on last month, the penultimate three letters of our alphabet are, to say the least, challenging. However, before I go off the beaten track, there are some definite subjects to write about. The first is the Zion Chapel. Although it changed its name in 1973 to West Street Evangelical Church and again in 1986 to the West Street Baptist Chapel, religious worship has taken place on the site since 1810. It was built with money donated by John Burt. He had made his fortune in the brewing industry and had also founded a bank in the town in 1807, together with his brother, Andrew. It failed after only nine years and was taken over by John Head at 31 High Street. The name Lewes Old Bank is still there inscribed in the facia, but obscured by the name of the restaurant now occupying the premises. Apart from its place in the Christian church movement, the earliest organised teaching took place in Sunday Schools. Zion was in the forefront of this. James Blomfield, the minister in 1857 was educating forty children in evening classes. In a church census in 1851, 2069 children were attending in the morning and 168 in the afternoons. In front there was a small burial plot. In

1846, a man called George Podgee died, but because he had expressed scepticism about religion, the, then, vicar of St Swithuns, would not allow him to be interred in the family vault in the churchyard. He was offered a place outside the hallowed grounds. However, not only did the vicar refuse to read the burial service but would not allow anyone else to do so. After ten days his family was offered a place in front of the chapel, which they gratefully accepted. The funeral was attended by an enormous crowd protesting against this act of religious

bigotry. The Yarborough Childrens Home began in 1916, in De La Warr Road, as a day nursery for the children of women in the town who were engaged in war work. It became residential in 1920, mainly for children who for a variety of reasons could not remain with their parents. By 1925 it had outgrown its premises and so moved to a new building in Highfield Road, where it remains to this day. In 1945, a concert was given in by a group of German prisoners of war to raise money for the home. It continued as a day school

10 until its closure in 1980, but was reopened shortly afterwards and is now a flourishing and well regarded pre-school. Yewhurst or The Yews were the previous names of The Abbey at Ashurst Wood. At the outbreak of the First World war, the vicar, the Rev WW.Youard, exhorted the young men in his congregation to enlist in the army saying, ”war is horrible but it is also capable of doing much good.” In the event 94 men from the town joined up along with 32 more from Forest Row, then part of the parish of East Grinstead. Whether he was directly responsible for these decisions is unclear, but it was in accord with the strong patriotic fever that swept the country. Fuelled by the belief that their cause was just but also by the conviction that, “It would be all over by Christmas.” Now for “X”. Apart from X-Rays, which are used across the globe in medical establishments, it has proved impossible to find anything in East Grinstead beginning with “X”. If the people who invented the way to date buildings by establishing the age of the wood, had not mixed their metaphors and used the Greek prefix for wood, “xylo”, instead of the Latin, “dendro”, I could now talk about the age of our mediaeval High Street as being dated by

xylochronology. But they did not, so now, as I indicated I might have to I am going “off piste”. Words that contain “X” are also few and far between unless you count the prefix “ex”, meaning previous. The county in which we live ends in “x”. The suffix “sex” is the old word for Saxon. It occurs in Sussex, Essex and the now defunct, Wessex and Midddlesex. Why there was never a “Northsex”, is a mystery, as the other three compass points are used. “X” marks the spot, on the treasure maps, beloved of pirates. It is also used for the unknown quantity in algebra and the sign for multiplication, one of the four basic processes in arithmetic. In Roman numerals it stands for the number 10. The story of why this is, is interesting but not necessarily true. Most cultures throughout time have counted using their fingers. The Roman system

for recording this put one stroke for each of the fingers on one hand, that is I, II, III and IIII. When it came to the gap between the fore finger and the thumb, it looked like a “V”, hence 5. When both hands were used, the second “V” was inverted over the first, to make an ”X”. At first sight the method of putting I after V for 6, or I before X to indicate 9, seems logical. However, M means 1000 and C means 100. Both of these letters are the initial letters of the Latin word for the number. Using this idea would mean that 10 should be D (for decimal), but D is 500! To complete their, seemingly, random use of letters 50 is L. This is the end of my alphabetical tour through the history of our town. It only remains for me to wish all readers a very Happy Xmas and a peaceful MMXXII, from everyone at the museum.

We Three Kings

Everyone knows the legend of the three wise men's visit to baby Jesus. But who were they? They were actually magi which was a term referring to the Persian priestly caste of Zoroastrianism. As part of their religion, the magi (priests) paid particular attention to the stars and gained an international reputation for astrology, at that time it was highly regarded as a science. The magi’s use of astrology and association with the occult led to word derivatives such as the English term magic. The King James bible translates the word as ‘wise men’, though the same word is also used to describe a sorcerer. They were referred to as kings based on an earlier prophecy that the messiah would be worshipped by kings, but there seems to be no firm evidence; they were more likely advisors to kings.

Balthazar: traditionally referred to as the king of Macedonia and giving the gift of myrrh which symbolised the future death of a king. He visited King Herod on the way to Bethlehem and was instructed to return after visiting Jesus, but avoided him altogether on the way home - a wise choice, for a wise man! Whomever they were exactly and wherever they came from (and how many were, indeed present) no one knows, one thing is certain, they certainly knew how to predict the future.

Church traditions have assigned their names as: Melchior: the oldest member of the Magi, described by St Bede in the 8th century as being "an old man, with white hair and long bear”. He brought the gift of gold. Traditionally called the King of Persia. Caspar: considered an Indian scholar; the town Piravon in Kerala State, Southern India has long claimed to be the birthplace of one of the magi. Caspar is portrayed with a reddish beard, of dark skin, as younger than Melchior and older than Balthasar. His gift was frankincense.

Good Sport Award Winner – Phillip Coote

Phillip Coote won the Mid Sussex applauds Good Sport Award. He joined East Grinstead Hockey Club in 1989 and represented all senior men’s sides, winning several national medals along the way. In a commercial club role since 1994, he has raised almost £1,000,000 in sponsorship. As well as being Men’s captain from 2004 to 2010, Philip coached the under 18 boys to 4 Mercian finals, captained the 2nd XI for 4 years and has most recently become club chairman.

As a result of these sessions, artists created work in a variety of media, helping to showcase the diverse artistic talents of local people. This work forms the backbone of our display. Runs until Saturday 30th January. This exhibition has been made possible by funding from the Gatwick Airport Community Trust.

Olly Wins "I was absolutely delighted to win the Mid Sussex Applauds Young Volunteer of the Year award and I’m still slightly stunned as the other shortlisted nominees were so impressive. “It is wonderful to be given recognition for my volunteering and my role in the Quarry Cafe & Community Fridge. “Working all through the COVID pandemic has been a very valuable experience, apart from learning the business side skill for the running of the cafe & fridge, to be able to connect with people really struggling to put food on the table and learning to understand their needs has been a real eye opener. I am so happy to have been part of a service that could make peoples lives better through sharing food. “ Huge Congratulations Olly!

Celebrating 125 Years in Business We are delighted to be celebrating 125 years in business in East Grinstead High Street. Family run since the very start and now in ownership of the fourth generation Simon Broadley. We would like to express a massive thank you to all our customers for their support over the many years and especially the past 18 months which has been extremely challenging and forced us to channel our business online as well as in store. Broadleys of East Grinstead was founded when George Herbert Broadley was given £500 by his mother Charlotte to set up his own business. While at Victoria Railway Station he saw a poster of East Grinstead, and he liked the look of it, so took the train to the town; after seeing a ‘To Let’ board decided to start the business in the 14th century premises 38-40 High Street. George and his wife were prominent Methodists and were one of the first people

in East Grinstead to have a car, Ford Talbot. When George died a large brass plaque was erected in the church and also for their son Thomas, a Bristol Fighter pilot who was reported missing and presumed killed in action in 1918. Thomas’s name is also on the war memorial in the High Street. The business expanded with branches in Hove, Portslade, Haywards Heath (1900-1931) Horsham (1907-1915) and briefly in Eastbourne and Worthing. In 1949 they bought the adjoining premises 34-36

1910, we think Broadley is on the right. Left is just an employee

Thomas Harding Broadley - He was the pilot that was shot down, presumed killed in action, 1918. High Street. Now in 2021 Broadleys operates just its East Grinstead. Over the past few years Olwen Broadley has conducted tours of our building, raising several thousand pounds for various local charities, St Catherine’s Hospice, Bluebell Railway and most recently Kent Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. The tours were originally based on the 1995 research by Mr. Peter Gray of Lingfield. Olwen

George Herbert Broadley has continued to delve into various archives, census returns and deeds to discover more of the rich history of the family and the building. 34-40 High Street is an exceptional medieval building and was of considerable importance in the town at the time. It is one of the original burgages that constituted the borough of East Grinstead from its foundation in the 13th century. It is unlike any other building in the town, far larger/grander occupying a 4-rod plot rather than the normal two of most other burgages. The original owner it is

thought was Sir Walter de la Lynde until his death when John Dallingridge assumed the title. They were prominent in the town enjoying privileges and were elected members of parliament. The family also owned Bodiam castle and interesting to note our building is at least 30 years older than the castle which was built in 1385. The timber framed building needs to be considered in two distinct periods pre-1350, the Black Death during the reign of King Edward 3rd and then in the early 15th century with the construction of the cross wing. This cross-wing dates from 1410-1420 and was the

The frames of this timber framed medieval building (See fig 1overpage), roof and floors were prefabricated by a carpenter on the ground to ensure each piece would fit with the others and then transported and assembled on site to form the complete building. Some key beams are numbered in roman numerals and also have the carpenters’ marks. These frames were always two dimensional and our building is made up a series of such frames. The building is centred round the Great Open Hall and was built on a box frame with oak beam construction. Since the 15th century it has comprised of two open hall type structures from barely seasoned oak quite possibly ships timbers. The main range (part of a timber framed building) is 36-40 and no 34 being a range end onto the street of at least 4 bays over cellars cut into the natural

late 16th or 17th century, though there is no specific evidence to date. It is thought a second floor/attics were added in the 18th century.

The great open hall (See fig 2 above) was open to the roof where smoke from the open hearth gradually found its way through gaps in the thatch which was the most common type of roofing material at that time. Though on this building it could well have originally had Horsham stone slabs which it still has today on the front. The fire was used to heat the hall, to cook the food suspended above it either in a cauldron or on a spit. Up in one of the attics you will find soot deposits on the roof timbers from decades of an open fire and is a firm clue of the existence of an open hall. Chimneys were inserted at a later date.

There are various possibilities as to why it was built:

The Open Hall’s first floor was created in the

1.

A fine house in traditional form parlour open hall and service quarter. Separate entrance for the servants and the merchants with a wagon way at the rear.

2.

It could have been a merchant’s house with its impressive formal room at the front and private range at the back which has long since disappeared.

3.

It could have been built as an inn with some accommodation at the rear

4.

As a civic building or guildhall particularly as it has such a fine upper room in the cross wing.

The spaces between the timbers (See fig 3 above) were originally filled with wattle made from woven sticks or split laths and sprung into place covered thickly with daub which was a mixture of clay, animal hair or straw and water. A coat of lime wash would probably have covered both the timber frame and infill on the outside. There are two cellars under the entire building, the rear part of which is cut out of the natural Ardingly sandstone which is about 137 million years old and was at the time of Iguanodons. It has long been thought that the last martyrs to be burnt at the stake as heretics in the High Street on Saturday 18th

Over the past eighteen months further research has established that an Ironmongers business was here before Broadleys and the fact they lived in the upper floors. The two families associated with the building for the longest time were the Coopers and Steers. James Cooper’s family lived at 36-38 and William Steer at 34-38.

To the rear of the building were a series of 11 portlands - a portland is a long narrow strip of land for agriculture that were behind each building in the High Street paying rent of 3d for an area of 1/4to 1/2 an acre. They have long since disappeared.

Visit the Christmas tree in the Courtyard which is inspired by William Morris’ designs and will get you in the festive spirit. Enjoy twilight openings when you can see the rooms lit for a Christmas celebration

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit to see Santa and this year families can visit Santa’s woodland grotto and enjoy a magical Christmas story in the company of the man himself, complete with a small gift for the children and a hot chocolate. Continue your Christmas adventure outside in the garden and join the Pyjama Thief trail. The cheeky Standen dog has stolen everyone’s pyjamas and hidden them in the garden, help the Beale family find them in time for Christmas Day. News from the Forest Centre: Gorse provide protection against predators and an umbrella against all but the worst snowfalls. This is vital for a bird at the edge of its range. The plant also supports Ashdown Forest’s remarkable population of another bird, Linnets.

Gorse is not only one of the most distinctive heathland plants but it is also amongst the commonest. Its needle like leaves, blaze of yellow flowers throughout the year and heavy scent of coconut are famous. In the past gorse was of great economic value. It was used as animal fodder, for domestic fires and processes such as baking, brewing and dyeing. When substitute fuels were found the high rabbit population, supplemented by heavy grazing, kept the plant in check. With the decimation of rabbits following myxomatosis, a general decrease in grazing and gorse adoring the British climate, it has thrived. The plant is important for a range of species. It provides a nectar source for many heathland pollinators and can be found buzzing with bees and hover flies through much of the year. It is also a favourite perch of the Dartford Warbler. This quintessential heathland bird nests in the surrounding heather but enjoys the elevated vantage point atop a bush. Gorse’s thick spines

Yet gorse is a headache for heathland managers. It is a leguminous plant, which means it can take nitrogen from the air and transfer it to its roots and the soil. This is good for farmland but not good for heathland where it is the low fertility of the soil that supports the species that make Ashdown Forest a biodiversity gem. Gorse can also dominate large areas, block views and provide a way for tree establishment. There has been much spoken recently about planting of trees being vital in the fight against climate change, but the key message is the right tree in the right place. The UK is in the world’s bottom 10% of the most nature denuded countries. Heathland is amongst our most biodiverse habitats supporting more species of dragonflies and spiders than any other UK habitat. It is important that we do not lose what little nature we have left while trying to offset our emissions.

Much of the forest’s gorse is of a similar age and needs management to create variety to support more wildlife. Rotational gorse management will produce young, developing and mature plants without domination of whole areas. This winter will therefore see the start of gorse management on the forest with seven hectares being cleared near Gill’s Lap car park. Machinery will be used to clear the plant before it is chipped and used to produce greener electricity. The use of the arisings as fuel will reduce some of the costs of management. We will make sure that there is signage in place to inform visitors and, as the area recovers after the works, views will be opened up and heather will be able to mix with the gorse in these areas once again.

Q&A:

GARDEN ARMY FOUNDER

Tom Morphew The Garden Army is a group of volunteers, based just outside West Hoathly, who garden and grow produce as a community team. We met Founder Tom to find out more: How did the idea of the Garden Army come about? A trained gardener, when I started my own farm, Full Circle Farms, I was determined to build a regenerative farm, improving soil health to help reverse climate change by expanding biodiversity. I wanted to use the farm as a vehicle for a community interest group to support peoples’ well-being and learn new skills. I was friends with an exmilitary policeman, Dave Gee, who was helping ex-army colleagues with PTSD, we saw that working outside as a collective had a very positive effect. This is what the Garden Army stands for: people who need one another and need to be outside getting their hands dirty.

What have you achieved so far? First, we’ve realised the dream of assembling an ‘army’ of volunteers. An area of scrubland and a few dilapidated out-buildings have morphed into a cultivated kitchen garden across half an acre, producing a wide variety of high quality, responsibly grown fruit and vegetables free from any chemicals – with 60 tons of hogging laid to create accessible pathways linking the various parts of the farm. We’ve also built a polytunnel to grow some of our more delicate produce – and we now have a chicken shed and free-range run, home to around 50 hens, laying more than 200 eggs a week. We’ve developed partnerships with a variety of local health and education organisations and started a programme of Corporate Volunteering Days. What has been the highlight of the whole process? In September, we partnered with leading chef and restaurateur Raymond Blanc at the Chelsea Flower Show. As well as providing produce for guests, including leading figures from politics and industry, I joined Raymond to present on our vision for the Garden Army and the importance of regenerative farming. Other highlights are little things like seeing

34 an excluded teenager come alive when looking after chickens or hearing a volunteer saying how the farm has changed their lives. What does the future hold for the Garden Army? What are your immediate and long-term plans? The project is still very much in its development phase and includes a sensory garden, small farm shop, relaxation and quiet spaces, and the refurbishment of ‘Big Blue’, the bus that will be used for meetings, tea breaks and visiting guests. What local feedback have you had? I’ve been delighted with the local feedback so far – from volunteers, doctors, teachers, customers, etc. They can see we have a clear vision and support us. How can people get involved and support the venture? We have plans but we desperately need secure funding to make this happen. So, money is always very welcome! But more importantly the Garden Army is part of the community – and we always welcome people to come along to our farm and see what’s happening, and who knows, maybe pick up a trowel and join our army of volunteers.

To visit the farm and find out about opportunities to help, email Tom@ garden-army.com For donations visit www.gofund. me/1c2589f4 or follow the link on our web site: www.garden-army.com/

This Christmas, there are festive delights indoors and out at Nymans. In the house, rooms are richly decorated with sumptuous Christmas trees and sparkling lights including some of the Messel family’s original Christmas decorations. In the garden, join Percy the Park Keeper on a winter wander trail, not forgetting to stop off at the Play Glade to see Percy’s shed and enjoy some festive games. There will also be opportunities to meet Percy in person and help him with his winter jobs. Dogs can also join in with the festive fun during November, December and January when they’ll be greeted with a special treat at the welcome hub.
