Dear Residents
Welcome to the June Edition of the Ashdown Forest Living. This month makes us think of STRAWBERRIES, because of this we’re featuring a wonderful recipe for Eton Mess that’s so simple that the most cooking-phobic among us will find it easy. We interview Forest Row author Julie Corbin, who’s going from strength to strength. For any budding writers out there she gives us some helpful tips. Our Gardening Tips which are a monthly feature have proved popular among readers so we bring them to you once again this month. The next instalment of the, “Diary of a Poohologist” recounts Pooh Corners Mike Ridley’s meeting with Christopher Milne. Thank you for supporting our local businesses nearly all of which are based here or near to the Ashdown Forest area. Here’s hoping for a great start to Summer! Enjoy those strawberries… With Best Wishes, Tally & Chris The Ashdown Forest Living Team www.ashdownforestliving.co.uk

“After advertising in the ‘Eas t Grinstead living’ and having such good results, I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was prov ed to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! I’ve had great resu lts advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

A Masterful Make-up Artist’s Story We ask Make Up Artist
Christina Jessel how she came to be in this highly creative industry‌ I have had over 20yrs experience in the hair and make up industry, I love my work, as it’s a profession that is always exciting, evolving and creative. I began with a hairdressing training, followed by a 3 year apprenticeship with the Royal Shakespeare Company learning wigmaking and theatre make up. This training included working with famous actors such as Sheila Hancock & Pete Postlethwaite, giving me a wonderful foundation of skills and experiences. I then freelanced in London working on musicals and plays for the National Theatre, Royal Opera House and many West End productions.

Last year I worked on the “Pirates of the Carribean set & have been lucky enough to recently work on photoshoots with Myleene Klass, James Cordon and Lorraine Kelly. My main focus now is my wedding hair and make up business based in Forest Row, covering the Sussex/Kent area. I enjoy using all my background knowledge and wealth of skills to create beautiful wedding hair and make up, and to bring out the absolute best in each and every bride to be for their special day. Having had such an extensive training means I have much to offer as a professional, giving my work an edge, especially with Vintage hairstyles which are currently very much on trend and highly requested. MY STORY I was on Steroids because I had been diagnosed with Osteo Arthritis in my hand. The fingers were very swollen and painful. This medication I was given caused me to put on 2 stone in weight. Last June I discovered Aloe Vera Freedom drink and I am now symptom free and my hand is totally back to normal! (no more drugs!). I decided to distribute the product based on these results. I have plenty more successes on my website – Rosie Wainwright Aloe Vera can offer relief for many conditions such as IBS, Arthritis, Psoriasis, Asthmas, etc. Call: 01825 712883 www.rosiewainright.myforever.biz

DO try this at home!
Perfect for June:
Eton Mess with Wild Strawberries Recipe by Chef Dean Samsudin at the Brambletye Hotel This summer dessert is so easy, especially if you make the meringue in advance, or use about 4oz of good quality ready-made. We buy our strawberries straight from Tulleys Farm for a wonderfully fresh flavour. Try it with different berries during the summer months.
Ingredients 200 g (7oz) ripe hulled strawberries 100g (3 ½ oz) Caster Sugar 500 ml (16 fl oz) Double Cream Few drops of vanilla extract
Meringue 1 medium egg white 65g (2 ½ oz) caster sugar Please note: you can make more meringues and put some aside for use later.
Method (Serves 4) 1. For Meringue: In a clean bowl whisk egg white until stiff, then gradually whisk in caster sugar until it holds firm (peaks when whisk is lifted). 2. Spread meringue in even layers about ¾ inches thick on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Place in oven at lowest setting for 6 hours until dry and brittle. 3. For Puree: put ½ the strawberries in a blender with ½ the sugar and whizz until smooth, pass through a sieve. 4. Whisk the double cream with remaining sugar and few drops of vanilla extract until stiff. Break the meringue in small pieces and fold into cream with half the puree, don’t mix too thoroughly as you want a ripple effect. 5. Slice remaining strawberries, spoon cream/puree mixture into dishes, drizzle with remaining puree and scatter the chopped strawberries. June 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living

Diary of a Poohologist WE SAY GOODBYE TO BILLY, HELLO TO CHRISTOPHER MILNE, THE NURSERY TOYS GO TO LONDON AND WE LEARN ABOUT THE POOH DIARIES.
I met Christopher when he was a grown man and not a little boy any more. We were both
parents. It was amusing to note that we each had a daughter called Clare. Thinking back I now wonder if his daughter Clare had been given a teddy bear for her fist birthday just like her famous dad. Maybe even one called Winnie-the-Pooh – but somehow I doubt it! On the first occasion I met him we talked together near that Enchanted Place on the top of the Forest and with a smile on his face he told of his expeditions with his Nanny Nou. As his memories came back to him I could see him returning to his childhood. On another occasion when he stood on Poohsticks Bridge and I was standing on the embankment a little way apart from him, I saw him looking over the rail into the water. There was a crowd of people milling around but Christopher was standing by himself. I saw him smiling once more as he stood there alone, gazing into the stream and could see again the little boy with the twinkle in his eye. For me it was a moment in a million. I had the privilege to see the real Christopher Milne connect with his childhood, to watch as his memory transported him through the adventures of the fictional Christopher Robin to a time when he was playing ‘sticks’ with his Nanny Nou Olive, or his beloved father Alan. Perhaps he was remembering a moment just before the game had been first Christened ‘Poohsticks’. When he eventually looked up and about, he was still smiling - it was a happy memory.

Mike Ridley creator of Pooh Corner Childhood for a child can sometimes seem an eternity. But no matter how much time you escape reality and explore the exciting world of imagination, sooner or later, you grow older and find that there are things that have to be done – like going to school! And so it was with Billy (Christopher Milne) as indeed it was for the fictional Christopher Robin. The ten stories in ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ end with Christopher saying farewell to his friends. The world of Winnie-the-Pooh was meant to be over and the child was on his way to boarding school – away from home and from his Nanny Nou. He was to leave behind the familiar ‘Enchanted Places’ within Ashdown Forest and continue his journey towards adolescence. A.A.Milne says at the end of this final chapter, “So they went off together. But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his bear will always be playing.”
In his autobiography, ‘The Enchanted Places’, Christopher says of his school holidays, “How lucky I was to have Cotchford for four blissful weeks at Easter and eight even more blissful weeks in the summer, and to have it almost entirely to myself.” He adds, “Alone by the river, alone through the fields, alone in Posingford, alone in the depths of Five Hundred Acre, alone on top of the Forest. Sitting alone on the grass in the sunshine. Walking alone through the woods at night. Alone with myself. Alone – yet never lonely. What bliss this was!” No mention of Winnie-the-Pooh then! In fact the nursery toys had been taken to Mallord Street still A.A.Milne’s London base. They were revered enough by Alan to have been put in a glass case. But I hasten to say that these were the Nursery toys – not the living residents of The 100 Aker Wood. They exist in the reality of our imaginations and are still there today – believe me.

All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they really happened and after you are finished reading one you feel that it all happened to you and after which it all belongs to you. Gardening Tips for June Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Bulbs
Always let the foliage on spring bulbs die down naturally. This is vital for next year’s display. Dahlia tubers not yet planted should be put in as soon as possible. All plants that need support should be staked at the time of planting.
Shrubs
Several of the shrubs that bloom on wood made during the previous year may be pruned as soon as the flowers fade to enable new shoots as long as possible to mature to carry next year’s blooms. Prune evergreens such as Boxwoods, Camellia and Junipers.
Vegetables
Brussels sprouts, sprouting broccoli, summer and winter cabbages, cauliflowers, kales and leeks all need planting into their final positions. Continue to make regular sowings of lettuces and radishes. Other crops where further sowings can be made are runner and french beans, beetroot, carrots, peas, Swede and turnips. Earth-up main crop potatoes to prevent tubers from being exposed to light. Keep on top of the weeding, by hoeing and by hand, also do any necessary thinning.
Lawns
Mowing can now be increased to twice a week. If there is a long dry spell raise the height of the mower blades Treat any isolated weeds with a spot treatment weed killer. Feed with a lawn fertilizer when the ground is moist.
Fruit
Fruits trained against walls should be watered if necessary. Strawberries should be in full production this month. Place straw or special mats under the plants to prevent the fruit from being soiled. Keep an eye out for Pest and Disease. Spraying with an organic insecticide/ fungicide may be necessary. Please ensure you follow all instructions on the label.
Roses
Remove fading flowers on a regular basis to encourage new blooms. Remove any suckers growing from the rootstock. Aphids, mildew, blackspot and Rust can be a problem this month. Treat as soon as an attack is noticed. After the climbing roses bloom, be sure to prune them. Next year’s blooms will be produced on this summer’s new growth.

Kitchens Bespoke of East Grinstead has won KBB Review magazine’s East Grinstead/Crowborough category for top kitchen installer in this area! For anyone who doesn’t know, KBB Review is a top national kitchen/ bathroom magazine for the industry. The KBB Review states: “Rachael Workman of Kitchens Bespoke had been in the kitchen business for 20 years before setting up her own showroom in 2008. Her background is in kitchen design and she sees this as her strength: ‘I’m not a sales person, the design is everything to me, but not just in terms of aesthetics, the practicalities are almost more important. I am a working mum so I know how it works.’ Then she showed me a bound copy of a design she was working on for a customer neatly presented with CAD images and costing. As she handed me her card, Rachael said that I can come out to have a look at the space and she could offer advice on what will and won’t work. Score 8/10 Rachael made a confident and comprehensive pitch.” As well as installing high quality kitchens to fit varying budgets, Kitchens Bespoke offer the following services: • Replacement worktops: granite, wood, Corian, Silestone & laminate. • Replacement sink & taps, doors & handles. • Glass back splashes – made to measure, in a large range of colours. An Interview with local author
Julie Corbin
Julie Corbin is Scottish and grew up just outside Edinburgh. She attended Edinburgh university and trained to be a nurse. In 1991 she moved to Forest Row with her husband and three sons. For thirteen years she ran the medical department at Ashdown House boarding school and taught PSHE and Citizenship. Two years ago she left nursing to write full time. Her second novel, Where the Truth Lies, will be out in paperback on July 21 this year. Here we ask her about life as an accomplished author:
What made you realise you wanted to be a writer? When I moved to Forest Row I made friends with another couple of women and we all enjoyed reading. One of them suggested we have a go at writing too, and we wrote weekly pieces to read out to one another. I found I enjoyed the challenge of getting my thoughts and imagination down on paper. I quickly realised I wanted to write a novel but my children were still young and so the desire lay dormant for over ten years. Then, with my sons in their teens, I joined a writing class at the adult education centre in East Grinstead and went on from there.
What’s the best & worst thing about being an author? Reader feedback is the best thing and most days there’s at least one email to my website from readers who’ve enjoyed my novels. I get
work alone. It’s great to be my own boss but sometimes the process can feel quite lonely. I do have a great group of writing friends, though, and we bounce ideas off each other and share our thoughts on the writing process.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Any local inspiration? For me inspiration starts with a single idea and then the characters, plot and setting grow from that. (Or not! Not all ideas have legs.) My second novel is set in Brighton as I love the atmosphere in the city and especially like walking along the prom. I’ve finished my third novel now and am busy working out a location for the fourth. I think East Grinstead will feature.
How has your life changed since publishing your first book?

clubs which I also really enjoy. I don’t pretend to know everything about writing and am constantly learning myself. Sussex university runs some great courses for writers.
As a published author, where do you envisage yourself being in 10 years time? I’d like to write nine book in total and I’d like to increase my readership with each novel. I’ve just finished my third novel – to be published next year - so I’m a third of the way there.
What advice would you give to any budding writers out there? Stick at it. It takes a lot of practice. There is a perception that we all have a book in us but getting it down on the page in a way that will interest a reader takes time and craft. Sign up for classes, make friends with like-minded people, be prepared to listen to criticism and then to act on it.
Julie Corbin will be signing books in Waterstone’s East Grinstead on July 23. See www.juliecorbin.com for details.

Design & planning Sue Risley, Baileybridge’s Principal, x Kitchens has been in the construction/ 30 years. Her mindset is: Project management refurbishment business for x over Bathrooms Refurbishment & extensions “provide a service as x good Landscaping as, or better than, one I would be to receive”. Equestrian construction x happy Curtains & blinds
Here we ask her a few questions about her business. We work to any budget and always provide stunning results, whether it’s one blind, or a new home you require. We are a very flexible and dynamic company that will manage anything to facilitate the smooth running of a project.
What started you off in the construction and refurbishment business?
My father bought and renovated properties since before I was born and for as long back as I remember I was the butt of family jokes, having always got a paint brush or a hammer in my hand. I bought my first property at the age of 18 and it was a complete mess and since I could not afford much help, I set about doing a lot of it myself, asking my father for tips. I sold this within a year, bought another and another; then thought I might as well do this for clients and Baileybridge is run by Sue Risley who has over 25 years experience with property refurbishment, construction & design. Sue provides exceptional attention to detail with helpful and clear advice, backed by her team of experts. Telephone 01825 714 922 : www.baileybridge.co.uk : email: enquiries@baileybridge.co.uk What services do you provide? Baileybridge specialises in creating beautiful spaces. We always provide an excellent finish to any work, executed with fine attention to detail from beginning to end. Our emphasis is on finding ways of managing projects that entirely suit the individual client and that means being flexible. Things are run in an ordered and contractual way to ensure the work is kept on a firm footing, We are quiet, clean, very pleasant and keep to timescales and budget.
What happens at the beginning? When we first meet a potential client we put a great deal of emphasis on understanding what is important to them. For some, a project is about a budget and for others the designer, manufacturer and products used are very important. Baileybridge has some excellent sources for all types and values of materials and some very imaginative ways of achieving the look our clients want, for the price they want to pay. A jargon-free, detailed quote is then presented.
Tell me about your team of experts? I only employ really nice workers – this is my business ethos if you like. I have worked with loads of people over the years and can say hand on heart my team is the best I have come across Not only are they good at what they do, they are good at discussing the pros and cons of different approaches.

2010, 70 fire fighters, Rangers and the Police Helicopter were involved in a 50 hectare fire at Crows Nest. This Easter Bank Holiday eight ESFRS appliances and five land rovers fought a fire at Four Counties. I got a phone call at 6:30pm and as duty ranger had to turn out.
