Dear Sir or Madam,

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Hate being overweight? Over three years ago, I was 5 stone overweight and felt continuously tired. I was faced with having to take medication for the rest of my life to handle my cholesterol as it was dangerously high. I was desperate to find a way to lose my weight.

Jan 07

May 07

May 10

Two of my friends had lost their weight with Rachel and I was very inspired by their results. Having tried so many different ways of losing weight, I felt going to Rachel was my last chance. I started my weight loss program in Jan 07 and within five months I had lost five stone. My cholesterol was then retested and much to my delight it was normal! This was achieved without having to take medication. My constant tiredness was replaced with an abundance of energy and other well being benefits. By following the simple guide lines for weight maintenance, it has been very easy to keep my weight off. I can only say that I am extremely happy to be the same size as I was when I finished the program three years ago. The support Rachel gives for weight loss and maintenance is very personal and motivating – it would be hard to find elsewhere. I have personally known at least 20 people who have lost their weight with Rachel and have all got excellent results. My health and well being has greatly improved. Shopping for clothes is a real pleasure now. It is wonderful to be finally free from dieting - very liberating!

The Ruins at Brambletye by Garen Ewing

Poking your head through the foliage that lines the south side of Forest Way, about half a mile from its bisection with the A22 at Forest Row, you may find yourself confronted by three ancient stone towers rising above the trees that mask the still-humble River Medway on its route towards the Kent countryside. This is many people’s first glimpse of a structure that provides much

mystery and romance within the remains of its tantalising Jacobean architecture, but not a lot in the way of hard facts.

brothers after his widowed mother married the 2nd Earl of Dorset (and creator of Sackville College) when he was 13.

Some facts, however, can be extracted by studying the clues carved into the local sandstone that make up the honey-hued ashlar blocks. The date 1631 is accompanied by the initials C H M in a lozenge at the top of the central tower, and a weathered coat of arms above the door aides their interpretation - the house was the abode of one Henry Compton and his second wife, Mary Browne.

The old manor at Brambletye had been one of the most important of the district, detailed in the Domesday Book, and handed down through the connected families of Montague, Aldham and Saintclare, ending up at the end of the 1400s with Richard Lewkenor, an East Grinstead MP, County Sheriff, and second husband to Elizabeth Saintclare. His building, surrounded by the moat which still survives 150 yards to the west, was very likely prone to dampness, and this may have been one of the reasons Compton built his house on a new site, and made sure it rose up from an impressive vaulted basement.

They married sometime around 1620, and it was the year before that Compton came into ownership of the older double-moated manor at Brambletye by way of Richard and Edward Sackville, the 3rd and 4th Earls of Dorset respectively. They were brothers of Henry’s first wife, Cecily Sackville, and his own stepSeptember 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living

and also served as a ranger on Ashdown Forest. One of his children, Henry, was killed in a duel with the 6th Baron Chandos in May 1652 at Putney, and seven years later another son, John, died in residence at Brambletye. The manor had survived the Civil War, and the last act of the Comptons at Brambletye was in 1660, the year of the Restoration, when Henry’s third son, George, held court there. George had married Mary Biddulph in about 1648, and in 1673 the Biddulphs were the new owners of Brambletye Manor, the land staying in their family until as late as 1866. However, the house had fallen into ruin long before then. In 1683 or 84 one Sir James Richards was made a baronet and described as ‘of Brambletye House’. It is commonly believed he abandoned the manor while fleeing to Spain on suspicion of treason, leaving the manor to fall into disrepair. A drawing dated 1782 shows the building in ruins, though with the gatehouse mostly intact and two of the impressive finials still in place atop the towers. By 1830 it was pretty much the ruin we know today, with large portions of the stone having been dismantled for other building projects, including for repairs to the bridge at Edenbridge. The house, or castle as it was sometimes overzealously known, enjoyed a flare of celebrity in the late 1820s when the popular novelist Horace Smith wrote his fictional account of the Comptons, ‘Brambletye House, Or Cavaliers And Roundheads’, which had the double effect of confusing its history and bringing the tourists, some of whom decided a little piece of the castle would make a very nice ornament. By the early 1900s the edifice seemed more tree than stone, but by 1930 the ivy was cleared, the building was stabilised and surveyed, and in 1953 it became a grade II listed structure. It currently resides on private land, and as of 2009 was included on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ register due to general deterioration, though the air of mystery and romance, and perhaps a whiff of Horace Smith’s fictional gunpowder - if the wind is right and the imagination flowing - will still greet the viewer who happens across this wonderful local gem. info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Is there a ‘Big Society’ in Ashdown Forest?

Featuring prominently in our news at the moment is the new government’s ‘Big Society’ idea. Of course the idea of ‘working’ for free, for the good of others and to better yourself, is as old as society itself. The ‘Big Question’ however is whether, in a society where we already have some of the longest working hours in Western Europe, we want to give up our leisure time to carry out ‘work’ for free, solely for the benefit of others? For those of us that are a little less selfless than those already volunteering where is the return on time invested? And perhaps this is where those of us working in the voluntary sector may have got our messages a little wrong. For the many of us that give our time and energy to a cause we believe in, the main motivation is an altruistic one. But what about selfish gain? September 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living

I hope I might be able to persuade you, that if you haven’t considered joining in with some voluntary ‘work’ or have thought about it often but haven’t actually got involved, there are many opportunities to spend your leisure time having fun, meeting new people, learning new skills and feeling good about yourself? So called ‘volunteering’ can be a lot about what you personally gain from the experience. I recently went to meet some volunteers who were ‘working’ on a ‘task’ to benefit a local nature reserve. The task was to make some beautiful hand tooled benches from locally sourced chestnut. Of course they had given a substantial amount of their time and (I can assure you of this as I saw the sweat pouring from their brows) they were working very hard. But this wasn’t the work most

of us think of doing to earn a crust. This work provides the chance to: a) Do something very worthwhile to benefit others, but also….. b) Have a go at something new, something different and personally enriching. Learning traditional craft, working with wood and hand tools, making something. How often do you get the opportunity to make a substantial piece of traditional furniture, without having to pay for the tools or materials? c) Most importantly these volunteers were all smiling, laughing and chatting. Some had met before, some had not but they were all having a great time and enjoying each others’ company. Now switch “volunteer task” for “day out” and I’d say this sounds like a pretty good day out! This is just one example of

many days being run in our area. Within the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme there are opportunities to get involved in a whole range of countryside practice, traditional woodland crafts, studying local archaeology, working with local theatre groups, helping children learn about bushcraft, working in museums, studying birds and butterflies. Of course there are many more opportunities with other local organisations. Way before David Cameron was talking about ‘Big Society’ the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, had launched projects across our local area. Many of these projects specifically aim to support local people in caring

for their landscape. The Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme began in 2009 and will run until early 2012. The Scheme has around thirty projects running across the Weald Forest Ridge area, the highest ridge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with Ashdown Forest at the centre. The overarching aim of the Scheme is to provide opportunities for local people to become more involved in learning about, understanding and caring for their landscape. If you would like to know more about what is going on in your area please have a look at www.highweald.org, or call the Scheme’s Officer James Sharpe on 01580 879957 or email j.sharpe@highweald.org, we’d love to hear from you.

Gardening Tips for SEPTEMBER Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Bulbs

Bulb planting can now begin in earnest particularly Crocus, Chiondoxa, Anemones, Grape Hyacinths and Narcissi and all the various types of Rock Garden bulbs. Tulip planting can be left until next month or even as late as November.

Herbaceous

Roses

Early flowering perennials can be cut back and tidied. Penstemons should be pruned back by half. New plantings of herbaceous plants can be carried out this month. If ground is dry continue to water.

Rambling Roses should be pruned now. Cut away the old flowering growths and tie in the new shoots. Continue spraying all Roses with an organic Fungicide as Black Spot, Rust and Mildew can still be a problem.

Lawns

September is ideal for laying turf. It is essential that once laid the turf is kept well watered. Grass seed can also be sown this month.

ASHDOWN FOREST DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY The Society’s year runs from October to July when we meet on the second Thursday in the month at Nutley Memorial Hall at 2.30pm for a full and interesting programme of lectures by NADFAS approved speakers, special interest days and outings often associated with a previous lecture.

After our AGM on 14 October our speaker, Jane Kelsall, will tell us about “The Long History of a Royal Necklace”, on 11 November James Taylor will give us a talk on maritime history he has entitled “Masters of the Sea”. The 9 December lecture will have a Christmas theme, of course, called “The Journey of the Magi: 1700 years of the Three Kings” by Rt. Rev. Dr. Christopher Herbert. As usual after a lecture we have tea and a chance to chat and make friends.

year held at Hartfield Village Hall, the first in November is “The First 50 years of English Porcelain 1745-95; and Victorian Pottery and Porcelain” with Dr. Geoffrey Godden and in March 2011 Jo Walton will tell us about “A Family Affair: Florence and the House of Medici”. Both sound too good to miss.

Bengal Village Article by Stace Harman, Local Freelance Journalist, www.staceharman.co.uk Situated on Lewes Road in of Forest Row, Bengal Village is a pleasantly realised restaurant with friendly staff. I visited on a Tuesday for two hours from 6pm-8pm during which time two other parties arrived to dine. The waiting staff advised me that the restaurant, that seats around 50-60 diners, starts to get busy from around 8:30pm. The well laid-out menu features a number of house specialties and, as is often the case with Indian cuisine, a large choice for vegetarians. Abdus, a member of the waiting staff, was happy to recommend to me a jalfrezi dish as an alternative to my favourite fiery vindaloo. Craving an additional spicy kick once the meal was served I requested some fresh chillies, which were promptly provided. Alongside the jalfrezi, I ordered pilau rice, garlic naan bread, sag aloo (spinach and potatoes), papadams and, partway through my meal, I requested an onion bhaji, which arrived at the table within minutes. The lamb in the main dish was tender and the sauce had the fresh heat of the green chillies complimented September 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living

by sweet peppers. The pilau rice was light and fragrant and the naan was wonderfully fresh, Abdus advised me that the dough for the naan is made daily and each naan is made to order. The sag aloo, whilst pleasant tasting, was warm rather than hot. The cost of the meal was around £22 plus drinks. Abdus informed me that the meat, vegetables and spices used by the restaurant are delivered by a London based supplier; apparently there is no local wholesale supplier. All dishes are non-GM, as should be expected, though none are free range as far as Abdus is aware. Some nice decorative touches around the restaurant compensate for the otherwise unspectacular carpets and walls, with a variety of fish in several bright, clean, wall-set fish tanks providing a pleasant focal point. The restaurant is based on the first floor to which there is no wheelchair access. A takeaway counter is situated downstairs, with takeaway available for collection only.

I very much enjoyed my visit and have a positive impression of Bengal Village and Forest Row, both of which I’d happily visit again. The restaurant manager, Sufi, has four restaurants in total and I’d be happy to visit the others to see how they compare to this comfortable restaurant with its friendly staff and tasty, fresh food.
