SACKVILLE COLLEGE & CHURCH LANE
Cats, Mice and Ghosts - Myths & Legends?
It is not surprising that a building like East Grinstead’s Sackville College, which is 400 years old, would have mythical stories of ghosts and strange goings-on associated with it. I have researched a number of publications and assembled these tales but I cannot vouch for their authenticity!
The college was founded in 1609 in the will of Robert Sackville, the second Earl of Dorset as a refuge for the elderly and poor of East Grinstead and the surrounding area. What is no myth is that today, it still fulfills the same purpose as the founder intended with 15 self-contained apartments for deserving residents who have a connection with the local area. The Rev John Mason Neale was warden of the college from 1846 to 1866 and best known for composing many hymns and carols, most famously “Good King Wenceslas”. In a work entitled “John Mason Neale; A Memoir”, written in 1906 by Eleanor Towle, she says, “Naturally an ancient foundation like Sackville College was not without its ghost.” She continues, “A well
authenticated spirit haunted the room known as the Earl’s Lodging” (presumably what we know as the Dorset Lodgings). She goes on to say that Neale attributed any “inexplicable noises and doings” to this spirit, albeit as she says, “unjustly”. She suggests that Neale readily accepted the notion of communication between the living and the departed. She noted that in a book in 1847, Neale wrote, “there can be no subject more interesting - perhaps more perilous – than the union and sympathy of the seen with the unseen world”. So, he was apparently susceptible to the concept of ghostly apparitions. Neale reported that one evening as he was crossing
the churchyard to go back to the college, close to the Church Lane cottages that were used at the time to house the Sisterhood of the Society of St Margaret, he met with the figure of a lady who had died not long before. She, according to Neale, begged him to give a warning to her husband about some journey or some work he was about to undertake. Neale passed on the message but the husband was sceptical and asked Neale what dress the woman was wearing. When Neale replied that he had taken special note and it was green satin of “a remarkable colour and pattern” the husband was convinced and said, “It must have been my wife. I gave her that dress just before she

1 0 SACKVILLE COLLEGE & CHURCH LANE CONTINUED it’s haunted!” On enquiring further she told him, pointing to the swivel chair, widely accepted as that used by Dr Neale, “we see blue smoke like that of tobacco coming from that chair – and it smells like tobacco too”.
Residents in the Victorian Era died and I believe no one else ever saw her in it”. There is also a tale from a more recent warden, who tells of the time when one of the family pets died. It was left in a basket overnight near the fireplace in the dining hall. The warden, in looking back down into the dining hall through the spy window from his quarters, said he saw the figure of a strange lady in a long dress peering down into the basket… On the top of the belfry over the northern side of the college there is a figure of a cat (or more correctly a leopard - part of the Sackville crest), which was originally erected with a weather vane during restoration work around the mid 19th century. In the 1980s after 130 years on duty, the leopard was replaced by a new laminated mahogany version protected by layers of epoxy paint. After storm damage in 2016 this new version was removed, repaired and refurbished. According to a History of the
College by Warden Frank Hill in 1913, there is a myth that at the top of the rod of the original weather vane was the figure of a mouse! There was a legend that if the cat caught the mouse Sackville College would come to an end. Fortunately, this has not proved to be true! A long-time resident tells another story of several occasions when visitors have sensed strange feelings in the “study” which adjoins the college’s chapel. This room has been used over the years for the warden’s study, most notably by Dr Neale in the mid 19th Century. When the resident guide was showing a lady round in the 1970s she said she was a “medium” and could sense something as she entered the study. On hearing this, the guide told the visitor of an occasion in 1972 when, as he was being shown round by the then matron, she opened the door to the study and beckoned him to go ahead of her saying “Nothing would induce me to enter that room;
The nearby cottages in Church Lane, as mentioned earlier, were once the first home for the Sisterhood of St Margaret where the sisters had a small school for orphans in the 1850s. More recently one of these cottages has been the home for Spires Hairdressers and Karen Dandy, who works there, has told tales of some rather odd goings-on, including books flying off the shelves and a milk frother mysteriously switching itself on. One client, who was a world-renowned medium, while having her nails done, confirmed the presence of a ghost, sensing it to be a girl around thirteen years old called “Lizzie”. She speculated the spirit may have been

1 2 SACKVILLE COLLEGE CONTINUED one of the orphans but Karen says “She’s a friendly ghost and seems to be comfortable with us as a family business”. So clearly not all ghosts in the area are unfriendly so I’m sure this applies to those at Sackville College as well. Indeed, a recent warden, in response to a request from the Paranormal Society, asking if they could come to the college to investigate if there were any ghosts, retorted: “No! Such ghosts as we have are happy spirits and we would like to keep it that way”!

Did you know that the Town Council are trying to make East Grinstead a Dementia Friendly Town? My particular interest in helping is that my husband Andrew Bass was Mayor of East Grinstead in 1992 – 1993. He died about a year ago with Vascular Dementia, among other things. Many of those reading this article will have known or at least recognised him as a councillor or in his alter-ego as a member of Ashdown Forest Morrismen. So much can be done socially to ease this difficult dementiajourney. It is vital to make sure that the person stays as independent and in control of their lives, as long as possible. A smile, an “excuse me can I help?”, instead of an insistence on hurrying can make such a
difference when your brain is getting muddled. EG Town Council is trying to make sure that all businesses and organisations join The Dementia Action Alliance. This does not cost money but advertises that the staff is willing to help, as many do anyway, and will have some training in how to assist those with dementia. The alliance hopes that businesses will accept some ‘Dementia Friends’ training from the town clerk, Julie Holden and have a couple of aims to enable them to illustrate how they can assist. The business will then have a sticker to place in their window. If you would like to help or need
any more information please contact the town clerk’s office. By Sue Bass Local activity: Melody for the Mind is an informal singing group for people living with dementia and Parkinson’s disease and their families and carers. It is held twice a month on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm until 3pm. There is no charge for this activity. Carers are asked to remain on the premises during this activity.

Forest Star-Gazing
The beautiful night skies of Ashdown Forest have encouraged one man, David A Cocklin, to experiment with astrophotography, resulting in some incredible images. Here is his story: ‘When I was a young boy at a boarding school in West Hoathly, we sometimes slept outside in the summer months. I would look up into the sky and was amazed by the number of stars. So, I got myself a little pocket book by Patrick Moore (of East Grinstead) to learn the constellations. When I was a bit older and left the school, I joined the Croydon astronomy group and used to go up to the telescope
in Kenley. I always wanted to photograph an object in the sky. I got myself a telescope and for years I was only observing. Then I got myself a DSLR Camera, and I found that I could attach it to a telescope and take photos of the night sky with
a lens. I was wondering about a location that had dark skies, and remembered the Ashdown Forest from my childhood. I found myself a nice spot to take photos, that I have been using for some years now. The forest is good for the east and south, which is best for taking astro-photos as you can see the constellations rising from the east. Over the years the light pollution has become worse. This is mainly from East Grinstead and Haywards Heath. Gatwick Airport has become a problem for all night planes, sometimes 10 to 20 planes circle round the forest, with some flying right over which causes a lot of my photos to be wasted. The equipment I

2 2 FOREST STAR-GAZING CONTINUED use is a small single arm telescope drive and a modified DSLR camera with a lens. I am a self-taught astro-photographer, and some things I do differently as I find my own ways. These images take hours of work, I take a lot of photos of 1 object and stack them in software, then use the software to bring out the data and colour, just to show you do not need a telescope or expensive equipment to take a photo of the sky. If a telescope says WOW Power on the box, stay clear of this. You do not always need power, you need light from the sky. Some of these objects are much larger than the full moon in the sky, we just cannot see them. If you decide to take up this hobby, I wish you all the best for fantastic astro results.’ Find David on Twitter @David_A_Cocklin or facebook.com/davidallancocklin

LATROBE & HAMMERWOOD HOUSE by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum Two miles east of East Grinstead is the hamlet of Hammerwood. The large house there, Hammerwood House, was the first large project of Benjamin Latrobe who was to become the Father of American Architecture. Together with the nearby Ashdown House, it is the only independent legacy of architectural interest left in England by this eminent architect, before his emigration to America in 1795. Benjamin Henry Latrobe was born near Leeds on May 1st 1764. His father, also Benjamin, was a leader in the Moravian church who was a Huguenot of French Protestant ancestry, he was responsible for all Moravian schools and establishments in Britain, with an extensive circle of friends in the higher ranks of society. While his father stressed the importance of education, Latrobe's mother, who was born in Pennsylvania, instilled in her son a curiosity and interest in America. In his teens Benjamin Jnr. studied in a Moravian college in Saxony, he served for a short time in the Austrian Imperial Army, suffering injuries and illness. After his recovery he embarked on a continental ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe, visiting France and Italy among other places. Through his education and travels, Latrobe mastered many languages including German, French, ancient and modern Greek, and Latin. He had advanced ability in Italian and Spanish and some knowledge of Hebrew. From a young age, Benjamin Henry Latrobe enjoyed drawing landscapes and buildings, so on returning to England he worked with John Smeaton, the engineer who built the Eddystone lighthouse, before going into practice on his own, in 1790. Naturally, his classical travels influenced his style of Greek Revival Gothic which was then in its nascent days and of which Latrobe was a strong, and
founding propronent. He married Lydia Sellon, the daughter of a wealthy businessman in 1790 and they had a daughter and a son before she died in childbirth in 1793. A year earlier in 1792, Latrobe had been commissioned to design Hammerwood House, which was his first independent work. Ashdown House was built in 1794 and now houses a respected private school which borders Forest Row. These structures are very rare examples of his work in this country and his only two completed, independent architectural buildings are in this locality, constructed prior to his most famous works of architecture, across the pond. In 1793, Latrobe was hired to plan improvements to the River Blackwater from Maldon to Beeleigh, the project lasted until early 1795, when parliament denied approval of his plan. Latrobe had problems getting

payment for his work on the project, and thus faced bankruptcy. In 1795 he suffered a breakdown and decided to emigrate to America in November of that year. As well as his architectural expertise, Latrobe was an accomplished watercolourist. Throughout his later travels in America he painted landscapes of the scenes he encountered. Before leaving England in 1795, he painted two scenes here. One is, I believe, of Hammerwood House and hangs in the headquarters of the Royal Institute of Architecture. The whereabouts of the other is unknown to me but it was offered to the museum some twenty years ago for £25,000, by an American art dealer. It is a view of Old Road in East Grinstead, showing a loaded cart being pulled towards the church which is without its tower. We have a copy in the museum. The book of his collected paintings in America contains the view of the retreating White Cliffs of Dover from the deck of the
“Eliza” as he passed them on his way west. Once in America, Latrobe was soon given many prestigious contracts. He designed the Capitol in Washington, the White House and the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. The latter is considered to be his finest work. Apart from these high profile works he was concerned with many eng ineering projects throughout the land. In later years, he was assisted by his son, Henry. Sadly, Henry contracted yellow fever and died in New Orleans. Unbelievably,
The first owner of Hammerwood House was the magistrate Dorian Magen Magens. In the 1851 census he lived there with his family and even larger staff. When the Magens family left, it was turned into flats for a short time before the rock band Led Zeppelin bought it. When it was eventually bought by David Pinnegar in 1982, it was in a very dilapidated state. He and his family have spent the intervening years gradually restoring the house to its former glory. It is open to the public. Opening times can be found on the website. It is well worth a visit, both to admire the architecture and the immense effort that the Pinnegar family have expended on this huge restoration project.

NEW CLUB: East Grinstead Runners We’ll be entering teams into the EG Mud Monsters Run on the 9th June as well as the Weald Ultra. We also have a team going to Man vs Coast in Cornwall in July and The Great South Run in October. We’re trying to organise some ‘Plogging’ (running whilst picking up litter) runs to give back to the community!
I formed the club last June after living in EG for a number of years. I’d been a member of a few clubs where the emphasis was on times and personal bests, etc. I found this mindset put some people off and so missed the opportunity to enjoy running within a club. I saw lots of people running on their own around the town and wondered if there’d be enough interest in forming a group. Fast forward a year and we are on the verge of gaining England Athletics affiliation that will enable us to provide courses for run leaders and coaches. It will also give us access to top running coaches. At the moment we train on a Tuesday night, concentrating on running technique, form and also drills to help people improve. On Sundays we take running on to trails and pathways around the town and take people to places they wouldn’t go on their own. We cover anywhere from 6 miles to about 9 or 10 during the run and we make a point of never leaving anyone behind as we all double-back to the last person. I found that this really helps people feel part of the club and gives them plenty of encouragement. There a number of people that were fairly new to running last year who have just completed ½ marathons and full marathons, and a couple who are tackling their first Ultra Marathons! We also give out a Runner of the Month award to recognise hard work, supportiveness and positivity.
If you would like to join a club where everyone is made to feel welcome, get in touch. Please email Martin on: info@ thefulcrumclinic.co.uk or find us on Facebook. by Martin Langton

EGTFC: A Potted History 1960-2010s (continued from last month’s article)
1960s Following the spell at King Georges Field in the town centre it wasn’t until 1967 that they finally moved to their current home at East Court after a protracted battle to get the ground, which was prone to waterlogging, fit for football.
1970s The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as good as it got for another 30 years although Grinstead did reach their first cup final since 1952 when they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the RUR Cup (Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup) in 1974 despite taking the lead. Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first time in 1979.
1980s During the 1980s the club regularly hosted Crystal Palace and Brighton in charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2000 spectators. However during this time, the Wasps had dropped even lower with two seasons in Division Three before regaining senior status.

Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division Two on the final day of the 200405 season and in October 2006 Smith, the longest-serving manager in the club’s history, was replaced by former player Steve Norris. In his second season Wasps romped to the Second Division title by a massive 18 points, losing just twice all season. Since then the club has established itself in
In May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman League for the first time in our history. Funnell left the club during our first season at Step 4 and Tony Beckingham returned to East Court for a second spell. ‘Becks’ kept the club in the league but he resigned in October 2015 and Matt Longhurst took over. Matt made sure Wasps retained their Ryman (now Bostik) status in his first season and in his two following seasons. The club runs multiple teams in the Bostik and Mid Sussex Leagues (details of which are all on this website). Matt is firmly committed to playing a young team and to ‘developing our own’ first-team players of the future.

Fund Raising for QVH
Actor Jack Ashton, best known for playing Reverend Hereward in BBC’s Call the Midwife, will be taking on a slightly different role this summer as he heads up the Queen Victoria Hospital team in the East Grinstead Mud Monsters run. He explains: My story “On June 9th I’ll be attempting my first (possibly last) mud monster run! I’m trying to raise as much money as possible for the Queen Victoria Hospital. I first became aware of the pioneering work this hospital does when cast in a play about a group of severely injured airmen called the ‘Guinea Pig Club’. Since then I have got to know many of the RAF veterans who were part of that exclusive club and I have now become an ambassador for the hospital. I have seen first-hand that the pioneering mentality continues and the surgeons and doctors there are renowned for their excellence. I am really excited about having the potential to help these wonderful humans. If you can, please donate! Much love x” To donate to Jack visit: euk. virginmoneygiving.com
