England’s Tallest Christmas Tree on Our Doorstep
The 118-foot tall giant redwood at Wakehurst Place, in Ardingly, has a new set of 1,800 festive lowenergy lights on string that measures 600 metres! Tree climbers from Wakehurst’s conservation team rigged them up last month using specialist climbing equipment and two high-level platforms.
The tree will no doubt have to endure some harsh weather this winter and will be rigged up until 6th January. Being new, the lights will look brighter than ever this year and so it’s well worth a Christmas outing to Wakehurst.
Doing Something About It Genevieve Youldon decided to take action to give a new lease of life to Dormansland recreation ground where she takes her niece to play. In her words: I thought the playground could do with a little makeover because the council had decided to take some of the items away to be mended; then I heard that they were unlikely to be returning them. I called and emailed them, as did another concerned grandma Anne Van Vliet and we decided it wasn’t good enough. A few weeks later the council decided that they would find funds to buy two new pieces of equipment but by this stage I had already approached the Parish Council, put an advert in the Dormansland Village Voice to get some volunteers and set up a committee. I now have four local mums, Anne the WI treasurer, myself as the main bulk of the committee, but lots of helpful people are offering help nearly everyday. I met with the Steve Hyder at Tandridge council and asked his guarantee to match my aim of £10,000
which he assures me he will. This will mean that we will have £20,000 by May hopefully to donate to rejuvenate the playground so that it will be fabulous in time for the school holidays. I intend to approach local businesses for donations, recycle mobile phones, ink cartridges and have a quiz night in January. I have also received nearly £500 from local donations like the Horticultural Society, the Carnival Committee and a generous dad Jonty Gates. Lighting Store In 2003 Forest Row Business owner Ben Sunderland founded The Internet Retailer, an online shop with FRNewsv2.indd 1 products for the home and garden. 10 years later, his ever growing business now has a team of 25 staff. This year he decided to venture into the High Street with his new Electrical Store on his very own doorstep in Forest Row to, in his own words, ‘back up the High Street with another empty shop now gone’. Last month Ben was invited to Downing Street to give feedback and advice as part of a group of fastgrowing, up-and-coming UK businesses. Here is our Q&A with Ben:

How did you come to receive such a prestigious invitation to Downing Street?
As a highly successful internet business, Why did you decide to open a shop in your local village of Forest Row?
Networking with an enterprise group, I got on really well with the guys from iwoca (an online finance company based in London) & they put me forward as they knew I had the correct experience in starting a business & financing it.
We wanted to open the shop to encourage the local economy & have direct contact with our customers. A good percentage of orders are taken over the telephone as people want to speak with us & refine their requirements. With several exhibitions at London Excel, Earls Court & Birmingham NEC, the team really enjoyed the customer face to face interaction. The retail shop is an extension of this & also means an empty shop off the high street filled, which is of benefit to the local community. It is also local to our warehouse, so we now offer a click and collect service with a local van delivery service as well.
Why were you choosen in particular? Due to the strength of The Internet Retailer business growth over the last 12/24 months, the government really want to know how they can help and keep the momentum going for businesses like ours. What happened when you went? Meet anyone interesting? The group was full of similar people to myself so we all got on really well, we were with the MP Daniel Korski (Small Business Advisor to David Cameron). and we sat round a table at Number 10 for a couple of hours over coffee and all discussed openly what are the financing issues with small business are at the moment and the red tape. How have you built your internet business over the years to it’s current state? Just hard work! It might seem like the obvious answer, but I will have to say that it is most important you put in the effort to get results. Whilst I was doing my training to become a Chartered Accountant (Qualified in 2008), I would work 9-6 day and work
What reception has the new shop had so far locally? It has been really well received both from local customers and regional web customers who have come to visit/collect orders. We have even had people from London down to the shop to refine & discuss their purchasing requirements. What do you hope to achieve with the shop in the future? Once fully operational with sign & a few finishing touches, we hope that it will provide a complete lighting solution to both end users, local trades people & commercial requirements such as hotels & restaurants. The real St. Nicholas The real St. Nicholas (in Greek Nikólaos) was a 4th century Greek bishop, born in the ancient town of Patara in modern day Turkey. St. Nicholas later lived in Myra (not far from his birthplace) when the region was Greek in its heritage and culture. He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents. While St. Nicholas was still young, his parents died and he was raised by his uncle who was the bishop of his childhood town. Thus St. Nicholas began the journey to becoming a bishop himself. The most famous of St. Nicholas’ good deeds saw him helping a poor man who had three daughters, but could not afford a dowry for them. In those days it meant they would remain unmarried and likely have had to become prostitutes. Hearing of his plight, St. Nicholas decided to help, but saving them the humiliation of accepting

charity, he went to the house after dark and threw three purses (one for each daughter) filled with gold coins through the window opening into the house. With his reputation, it is no surprise that he came to represent the gift bearing associated with Christmas. As many miracles were attributed to him, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He has an undeniable influence on the mythical figure ‘Santa Claus’ which comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which itself is a corrupted version of Saint Nikolaos. Try saying both (with a Dutch accent if possible) and you will see they sound similar. According to research, Saint Nicholas was short, olive-skinned and had a broken nose. It was likely that he did sport white hair and a beard, as was the fashion for religious leaders of the day.

Walter Kohn By Dorothy Hatwell
East Grinstead has played a small part in the life of a Nobel Prize winner. In August 1939, as part of the Kindertransport, Walter Kohn arrived. Austria, his country of birth, had been annexed to Germany by Hitler and as a Jew his life was under threat. His parents, Salomon and Gittel hurried him to the safety of England. They had to remain behind and were subsequently sent to Auschwitz where they both perished. Walter was sixteen at the time he arrived in England. He had, initially thought of becoming a farmer, and spent a short time training for this in Kent. However, his health deteriorated and he was forced to abandon the idea. He went to stay with Charles and Eva Hauff in Forest Row as Mr. Hauff had had business links with his father. His elder sister, Minna, who had escaped from Austria just before him, joined him there. While staying with the Hauffs, Walter attended East Grinstead County Grammar School for a short period. Despite the brevity of his attendance, it was in fact during this time that his interest in mathematics and science was awakened. Supported by the school staff and the Hauffs he started studying these subjects in earnest. Unfortunately, when he reached the age of seventeen, the government ordered his internment, for the reason that he held a German passport. He spent a few months in various camps in England and the Isle of Man. During this time he was sent books and course work by the staff at the East Grinstead Grammar School to enable him to continue his studies. In July 1940 he was sent to Canada in a convoy which reached Quebec after crossing
the U-Boat ridden waters of the Atlantic. On arrival at an internment camp he enrolled in a course in mathematics run by another Austrian, a distinguished mathematician called Dr. Fritz Rothberger who passed on his love of the beauty of his subject to his pupils. Walter was moved round several camps in the Quebec area. He took the official Canadian high school exams which he passed and was then able to sit for the McGill University Matriculation exam in mathematics, physics and chemistry. He worked as a lumberjack in his spare time in order to save enough money to buy books on his chosen subjects. In January 1942 he was cleared by Scotland Yard of being a spy and was released from internment. He went to stay with Professor Bruno Mendel in Toronto. There he was persuaded to study physics and mathematics at the University of Toronto, rather than his first choice of engineering. After a year he joined the Canadian army but was still able to continue with his studies and research. On discharge a year later he was awarded a “wartime bachelor’s degree”. He then went on to obtain a master’s degree which included a paper on the scaling of atomic wave-functions. He was given a scholarship to Harvard to work for his Ph.D. For the next forty years, Walter was to play an increasingly important role in the world of science. Although a naturalised Canadian his working life was mainly spent in the United States of America and he became an American citizen in 1957. He taught at the Carnegie Mellon University and at the University of California both at San Diego and Santa Barbara. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the latter. Throughout those early years of studying he was supported by his first wife, Lois. He married his second wife, Mara in 1955 and they have three children.

It is a tremendous honour for the town that someone who has made such an enormous contribution to the world of science should trace the inspiration for his hugely successful career back to one of our local schools. Perhaps there will be other Nobel Prize winners from East Grinstead in the future...
Three Wise Men Three Wise Men or Kings are collectively called the ‘Magi’ and were a group of distinguished scholars who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing, as we all know gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They were the first religious figures to worship Jesus. In fact the account does not mention the number of people “they” or “the Magi” refers to, it has been assumed it was three wise men because three gifts are mentioned. In the East, however, the Magi traditionally number twelve. They are often thought of as kings, due to Psalms 72:11, “May all kings fall down before him”. They are thought to be Melchior, a Persian scholar; Caspar, an Indian scholar and Balthazar (also Balthasar, Balthassar, and Bithisarea), an Arabian scholar.
The Magi are described as “falling down”, “kneeling” or “bowing” in the worship of Jesus. Inspired by these verses, kneeling and prostration were adopted by the early church. This gesture had an important effect on Christian practices and even influenced secular life. As we know kneeling, etc. is indicative of great respect, and typically used when venerating royalty and suchlike. In modern day full prostration is now rarely practised yet kneeling has remained an important element of Christian worship. Their visit is commemorated in most Western Christian churches by the observance of Epiphany, 6th January. The Eastern Orthodox celebrate the visit of the Magi on 25th December.

100th anniversary OF the Great War East Grinstead will be joining the rest of the country in marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War. Apart from our historic High Street, not much of the town back in 1914 would be entirely familiar to us. However luckily not only do we have an outstanding collection of photographs of the time, but amazingly there’s also movie footage of troops on manoeuvres coming up London Road through the town en route to Ashdown Forest, which served as a training ground in WW1 before the troops embarked for France. The Town Museum has this film footage on display as part of its permanent exhibition, and it’s an uncanny sight to catch a glimpse of the British troops passing by a building that is virtually identical to the one you see today, but think of as our branch of Lloyds Bank. Letters too survive from the first year of the war, and from James Mitchell a young Private raised in Church Lane comes this extract of a letter written to his father in October 1914: “We started away just after dawn from our camp and I think it was about an hour later that we encountered the enemy. They were on the opposite side of the valley and as we came over the brow of the hill they opened on us with rifle fire and shrapnel from about 900 yards. We lost three officers and about 100 men killed and wounded in that half hour. I do
not want any more days like that one.” Another letter by East Grinstead resident, Private H. F. Leppard wrote to his mother on 19th December, 1914 reads: “The soldiers at the front need more rest. While in the trenches the water is over our knees most of the time. The war is going to last some time yet, and might be another twelve months before it is over. The war has only just begun and its going to be a war of exhaustion. After the regular armies have done their work it means that all the young lads at home being trained and disciplined and will take our place in the field. The sooner people understand this, the better, it will be for the nation.” There were acts of outstanding bravery from the outset, and among the first to be awarded a Victoria Cross was Sidney Godley, a soldier born and bred in East

Grinstead. On the 23rd of August, barely a month after the outbreak of hostilities, Private Godley took over a machine gun on Nimy Bridge when the Lieutenant in charge of the section had been mortally wounded. Godley held the enemy from the bridge, single handed, for two hours under very heavy fire and was wounded twice. His gallant action covered the retreat of his comrades, but he was eventually taken prisoner. His final act of bravery was to destroy the gun and throw the pieces into the canal. The war was to continue for four cruel years, and you only have to look at all the names carved into the war memorial in the High Street to judge the impact it must have made to a small Sussex market town. In 2014 the East Grinstead Concert Band will be travelling to Belgium and playing

in the town of Ypres, not only commemorating the outbreak of the war but also their own 40th anniversary. The town museum, the library and Chequer Mead will also host exhibitions and performances relating to 1914, and a full programme of events will launch from July onwards; more details nearer the time. If you or family members have local information or memorabilia relating to WW1 please drop a line to the Tourist Desk in the library or the East Grinstead Museum.
The Uncanny Story behind WW1 Aircraft named ‘East Grinstead In 2003 I was researching references to East Grinstead, and came across a model aircraft enthusiast’s website. On it someone asked if anyone knew of the correct colouring and markings of an aircraft known as a R.E.7. It was suggested that they look at a book by a British author called Les Rogers that was published in America, but could be imported. In it there was this photograph with the words East Grinstead plain to see on the fuselage. After a long exchange of messages to the publishers in the US they put me in touch with their British agents, who in turned forwarded a letter to Les Rogers in the UK. Imagine my surprise the next day to hear the phone ring and discover that it was the author calling. “You won’t believe this.” He said. “ But I’m calling you from Sackville Court right here in East Grinstead!” So all the time I was searching, Les Rogers was only a stroll away from my desk here. It’s due to his generosity that the Museum have the high quality photograph (above) that you can see in the Museum today. We have concluded that the plane was named East Grinstead as the result of a fundraising appeal in the town. Sadly, any more definite clues have still to be discovered, but some positive news was that the aircraft apparently survived the conflict. - Simon Kerr, Tourist Officer East Grinstead.

Sat 14th December, 11am - 3pm. ‘The Inner Silent Way’ by Bonx Trigwell Review: this is the second book by Bonx Trigwell and this time he writes from a purely fictional perspective. Set in the Surrey countryside, Alan is the main character, a single man who is not so lucky in love. His trade is carpentry and through this he secures a job restoring a staircase in an old country house. He makes some very dear new friends and, with them, he has the happiest, funniest time of his life. Those days are numbered however and a dark cloud is looming. The characters created by Bonx range from snooty and greedy to eccentric, humorous and generous. Apart from loving his main characters, for me, Slurmantha has to be the best but I’ll leave you to discover her. Bonx has an ability to tell a good yarn and one has to wonder whether, in a previous incarnation, he was a medieval travelling storyteller. - Sue Bicker.

Holly & Ivy Holly and ivy have been the mainstay of English Christmas decoration for churches since at least the fifteenth century, when it was often mentioned in church records. However, these evergreens had been used as winter decoration long before the arrival of Christianity. During the winter solstice festival ancient celts fashioned ivy into wreaths and garlands for decorations. The Romans viewed it as having close ties with the Roman god of wine, Bacchus (Dionysus). The fact that ivy stayed green throughout the year led some to believe it had magical properties so it became a symbol of eternal life, rebirth and the coming spring season. Holly was prominent in the Roman celebration of Saturnalia (upon which the Christmas holiday was supposedly modelled), as the plant was considered sacred to Saturn. In Norse mythology, it was associated with Thor, god of thunder, and holly plants grown by the home were thought to prevent lightning strikes. Holly and ivy were both an understandable choice of decoration for bringing hope and cheer during wintertime. With almost all of nature dormant, these evergreens yet remain and people could be reminded of better times to come - if they could steel themselves to
survive the harsh winter! Both plants were thus adopted by early Christians as Christmas decorations in the Roman times, despite the likely disapproval of church leaders, who would have regarded the decorations as pagan. Nonetheless these evergreens were well on their way to becoming a staple of Christmas tradition. Symbolically, the prickly leaves of holly came to represent the crown of thorns; the berries, drops of blood that were shed by Jesus. We all know the traditional English Christmas carol, ‘The Holly and the Ivy’, the imagery of which firmly cements their place in the Christian message. A a final word, later in the fifteenth century Henry VIII referred to holly and ivy’s everlasting quality in a love song attributed to him: (Extract)

As the holly groweth green And never changeth hue, So I am, and ever hath been, Unto my lady true. Green groweth . . . (We might add that this lovely ditty was written in the King’s younger years, it is perhaps questionable whether his still had such sentiments in the latter part of his life...) Without doubt, these evergreens have earned their place in our traditions, appearing as varying symbols and guises over hundreds of years.

How does Harry do it? Harry Townsend, well known and loved in East Grinstead, set up his East Grinstead based charity back in 1999. Here he tells us how far it’s come and the amazing strides it will be making in the coming year: Background Myself and my three sons set up the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund when my wife Myfanwy died from malignant melanoma in 1999, with the objectives of raising awareness, education and funding research to strive to find a cure for this terrible form of skin cancer. Melanoma is truly one of the diseases of the 21st century; it affected 1 in 1500 in the 1930s, now it affects 1 in 50 and rising. Myfanwy worked at Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) and was well known in the town. She was Chairman of East Grinstead Operatic Society and conductor of the Forest Row Lifeboat Choir for many years. She was also ‘mother’ to Felbridge Juniors Rugby Club (as one of our players put it!) both in this country and round the world. After we finally established the charity, to publicise it I did a number of fundraising
‘challenges’ such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, trekking the Grand Canyon ‘ rim to rim’ (thanks to Hallmark Travel); running (slowly!) the Death Valley Marathon; walking the Pilgrim Trail to Santiago de Compostela (500 miles, 38 days) and writing a book about it ‘The Slowest Pilgrim’. I then celebrated my 70th birthday with a 5 day, 100 km Saharan race and then by walking end to end of the North Island of New Zealand (800 miles, 68 days), pushing my wheelbarrow George and writing another book ‘Harry the Wheelbarrow Man’! The money raised in my wheelbarrow, $NZ25,000 (12,000GBP) was the catalyst to setting up the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand, now a thriving charity. Present Day! So far, we’ve raised over half a million pounds and helped to fund practical research projects at the Royal Marsden and the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, plus we also established the creation of a new post for a skin cancer nurse at QVH.

Additions to the team This year a hardworking team has been put into place, headed by marketing experts Michelle Baker and Anna White. They have helped reinvigorate the charity with a new logo, website, social media platforms and some very exciting initiatives. Melanoma Awareness Week has been running nationally for six years; locally, we receive enormous support from Haskins Garden Centre at Snow Hill. And we helped set up the Sun Safe campaign in Cornwall and funded mole check day at many locations on the south coast. We’d like to do more such days: our next will be in the new year, in the Spring, in Tunbridge Wells and this will be supported by Mr Paul Banwell, our medical ambassador, and lead consultant at the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Unit at the QVH. East Grinstead Rotary Club are very kindly helping us to set up a mole check day in East Grinstead, which is very appropriate as it’s our charity’s home town.

Leeds United FC Leeds United FC has given us enormous support over the years. Sadly their sports therapist Bruce Craven died from melanoma aged 32, and the players themselves contributed £2500 to put our green wristbands on the market. As well as regular donations from the sale of signed merchandise, a team from the club will row the Channel next summer to raise funds and awareness: 46 miles from the French coast to Margate. They will be coxed by Francesca MacDuff-Varley, who was third in The Apprentice in the last series. Well, aside from the Charity, I’m also busy writing my next book; the story of Felbridge Juniors Rugby Club. When I retired from rugby aged 32 in 1969 (you can still see me in team photos on the stairs at East Grinstead Rugby Club), I decided to ‘put something back into game. This didn’t mean propping up the bar and saying ‘rugby isn’t what it was when I was playing’! I wanted to set up a junior club, to provide the best coaching and opportunities to meet and beat the best: and to travel to do so. We produced at least eight junior (colts or schools) internationals! The story must be told, it’s part of rugby history. Looking to the future – protecting children whilst they enjoy a healthy lifestyle outdoors! Built on my love of sport our new initiative is called the ‘Outdoor Kids - Sun Safety Code’ and this will launch in Spring 2014. We will be promoting Sun Safety Guidelines via national organisations who work with children across a whole range of outdoor pursuits. We have been speaking to national governing bodies for sport and outdoor activity associations; and so far have not had a single negative response! We have the support of paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE; whilst outdoor girl, TV presenter Julia Bradbury is our ambassador and has just completed a mole check video for us in association with The Royal Marsden. We will be announcing all the above in early 2014. However, ahead of the launch we hope East Grinstead Living readers will follow our progress on our Facebook page and on Twitter. Marathon for Melanoma! As you may know by now, Harry founded the charity with an adventurous spirit, so with that inspiration in mind a team is forming to undertake the challenge of running the Bacchus Half Marathon next September to raise funds for the charity.

Chocolate Yule Log Everyone in the family is sure to love this recipe at Christmas.
What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Line a 23x33cm/9x13 inch Swiss roll tin with greaseproof paper and brush this lightly with oil.
Ingredients: • vegetable oil, for greasing • 150g/5½oz golden caster sugar • 6 large eggs, separated • 250g/9oz high quality dark chocolate (minimum 60 per cent cocoa solids)
Buttercream icing filling • 250g/9oz unsalted butter, softened • 450g/1lb golden icing sugar, plus extra for dusting • 50g/1¾oz cocoa powder, sifted • 2 tbsp milk
2. Combine the caster sugar and egg yolks in a bowl and whisk them together until light and thick. Melt the chocolate with 4tbsp cold water in a bowl over a pan of very gently simmering water. When you can see the chocolate has melted until smooth, stir it into the mixture. 3. Whisk the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gently fold a spoonful at a time into the chocolate mixture, then gently fold in the remaining whites using a large spoon. Note: do not overmix. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 12-14 minutes, until risen and just about firm to the touch. 4. Remove to a wire rack and leave to cool in the tin for at least 2 hours. 5. Once cold, lay a sheet of greaseproof paper on a board. Turn the whole cake onto the sheet of paper in one movement, then lift the tin off. Carefully peel away the paper and neaten up the edges by trimming. 6. To make the buttercream icing, beat the butter until soft, then sift in the icing sugar and cocoa. Add the milk and combine together until soft. Spread half the icing over the cake up to the edges. 7. Roll up starting at the side opposite you, use the paper to help roll the cake - don’t worry about cracks. Transfer to a flat serving dish. Carefully spread the remaining icing over the cake. Decorate festively (something for the kids to do perhaps) and sift over some icing sugar. Optionally you could use fresh whipped cream as filler, raspberries and even a dash of whisky.

Apparently this new addition to our language can be traced back to a post on an Australian online forum in 2002: “Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.” Amazing the sources of our language in the 21st century!

East Grinstead Hockey Club in association with Motorline Crawley VW has been given the prestigious honour of hosting the Eurohockey Indoor Club Cup Championships at the K2 in Crawley on behalf of the European Hockey Federation from 14 February to 16 February 2014. The tournament will feature the top 8 Indoor Championship winning club sides in Europe. These 8 teams competing are from Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, Russia, Spain, Belgium, France and representing England will be East Grinstead HC! The competition is split into 2 pools of 4 with each team playing 3 qualifying games and then a further 2 classification games to decide both the champions and which sides will be relegated. Tickets will be available from the EGHC website at www.eghockey.co.uk/eurohockey and will be for 2 sessions on Friday and Saturday and 1 session on Sunday. In every session you are guaranteed to see all 8 teams. The sessions start at 10:30 and 3:30pm on Friday, 9am and 3:30pm on Saturday with the Sunday session starting at 10am. Forest Row Choral Society will be holding a Christmas concert at Holy Trinity Church, Forest Row, from 7pm. ‘Twas the Sunday before Christmas’ celebrations. The traders in East Grinstead’s historic High Street open their shops to give a special Dickensian welcome. Plus there will be a choir singing a selection of choice carols.

The Meridian Probus Club of East Grinstead for retired professional and business people meets locally at 10.15am for coffee, followed by a talk by Felix Hatch on ‘The Experience of being a Magistrate’ and an optional pub lunch. Founded almost 40 years ago and based at St Mary’s Church Hall in Windmill Lane, East Grinstead, the Group has an ever increasing number of young members- (both boys and girls, aged between 6 and 14) but really needs more adult help to give them the experience they deserve. No prior knowledge of Scouting is required as full training would be given- but enthusiasm and a sense of humour would go a long way!
