Gardening in July
Inspired by the plethora of ideas delivered direct to our front rooms from the Chelsea Flower Show there is no better time to fill your garden with colour and scent. June brings long warm days and plants can’t resist showing off their beautiful flowers, a soft breeze will carry the scent through the garden – perfect at any time of day.
Roses
Patios
Regular dead heading will ensure a long season of new roses and keep the shrub looking attractive. Climbing and rambling roses will need training and tying in so they don’t become out of control, this also helps to support the stems when laden with roses.
If you haven’t done so already then now is the time to fill your pots with summer bedding for an instant display of colour. If you’re concerned about watering then choose geranium and pelargonium as they can tolerate slightly drier conditions. Small trees and shrubs can look good in pots but remember to water them, even if it rains, they don’t like to dry out.
Perennials Taller plants such as Delphinium may need staking to support the long flower stems. Deadhead perennials regularly as this will encourage new growth and repeat flowering. Regular watering will stop plants drying out. If you have gaps in the border then fill them with Dahlia, Canna and Lilies for an exotic display. Keep removing perennial weeds.
Herbs
A very useful addition to any garden, however small. They look great in pots and kept close to the kitchen door makes it easy to cut them for cooking.
Lawns At this time they should be lush and green and mowed once a week. If it’s a very dry month then don’t cut the grass quite so short.
Camellia & Rhododendron These will have finished flowering and benefit from a deadheading. A regular 2 weekly feed throughout the Summer will keep the leaves green and glossy.
Fruit and vegetables Strawberries and rhubarb can be harvested and enjoyed now and the first crop of early potatoes (with a sprig of fresh mint). Thin out the fruits on the apple tree and protect your soft fruits from the birds. If you enjoy visiting other gardens, either for inspiration or because you don’t have a garden then check out the National Gardens Scheme (NGS). People open their gardens to the public on particular days, money raised goes to charity and you can often get to enjoy delicious cake and a cup of tea. The Statue is Revealed!
he highly-anticipated unveiling of the Sir Archiband McIndoe statue will take place on Monday 9th of June at 1.15pm. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron of The Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, will unveil the over-life size bronze statue in honour of the pioneering plastic surgeon. As most of you will know, the new statue is sited outside Sackville College in the High Street. Present too will be the sculptor, Martin Jennings, whose own father, in a odd twist of fate, was treated by McIndoe at the Queen Vic. Jennings is an internationally acclaimed sculptor well known for his statues of Sir John Betjeman at St Pancras station and Charles Dickens at Portsmouth.
Des O’Connell, Adonia Montfort Bebb (McIndoe’s daughter), Martin Jennings and Sandy Saunders from left to right.
Some of the original members of the Guinea Pig Club, the badly burned aircrew who were rehabilitated by McIndoe during
WW2, will also be present for the unveiling. See you there...

June Tips for Parenting We’re not experts! Just parents like you with a few ideas you might like ... 1. Share your own passion/hobbies with your kids. With the intensity of life these days many of us have lost track of our own passions. We’re often in the groove of catering to our children’s activities that we’ve no time left to share our own hobbies/passions with them. When you do share the activities you personally enjoy with your kids, your own delight will be infectious. It will also be good for them to see their parents happy & enjoying an activity (rather than stressing or in a rush all the time!). Trick is to keep it simple. 2. Conquer Clutter. Clutter can be a ‘cranky-mum’ trigger; adapt a ‘no-prisoners’ approach to clutter, especially paper! Only hold on to papers you really need, become ruthless about which | June 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts
papers you’re willing to keep. Grooving in a routine can also help with clutter: e.g. when they come from school, hanging up coats, putting shoes away, placing bags in the right place, etc. 3. Routinely putting aside some ‘Me Time’. Put aside time to go for a walk, read a book, etc. these are one simple way to have some ‘time out’. Mothers can contend with so many different things during a day that it can all get a bit overwhelming. Some solitude allows us to refresh ourselves and gives you a break from just ‘giving’ all the time. It allows us to go back ‘into the fray’ with a new head on.

plan the future with the coaches and founder members. The sole aim was to support the dedicated boxers and coaching volunteers, create awareness and look for funding opportunities.
Boxing clubs may be born overnight, or at least the idea, boxers are not. Careful preparation and planning was needed through training in accordance with ABA guidelines to ensure that safety was paramount.
The club was flourishing and more boxers were ready to be unleashed on boxing shows throughout the South East. We were then told that the gym was being sold. Our ideas went on the back burner and survival became top of the agenda.
In 2013 three local business people came forward to help
We were visited by then mayor and councillors in October amidst this time, who presented us with some funding and enjoyed the welcome of our gym. The mayor’s husband and Coucillor Rex Whittaker enjoyed some sparing. As luck would have it, by the start of this year we had negotiated a deal with the new owners of Juggernauts Gym. Our plans for the future include having our own gym large
enough to cope with the growing numbers of boys, girls, men, women who, once they have a taster of what boxing can give you, come back for more. Our Aims: Becoming a valued member of The EG Sports Association, reaching out to the local schools and youth clubs and being an organization of which the community can be proud. Bringing together all colours, cultures and creeds; increasing fitness (there is no better weight loss), self confidence, respect for others and forming friendship bases for life. Like all clubs we cannot operate without financial support and any potential sponsors would be most welcome. By Mike Potts
Rubik’s Cube40 years old! The world famous
Have you worked it out yet?
has just turned
1. In 1974, Ernő Rubik a young professor of architecture in Budapest created an apparently impossible object. 2. Rubik wanted a working model to help explain 3D geometry. . It took him over a month to work out the solution to his puzzle. 4. It was originally known as the magic cube and was sold in a Budapest toy shop in 1975.
5. The puzzle consists of twenty-six unique miniature cubes, which each included a concealed inward extension that interlocks with the other cubes, while permitting them to move to different locations. 6. It was renamed the Rubik’s Cube in 1980. 7. It won Toy of the Year in 1980 and 1981. . Over 350 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide – making it the bestselling toy of all time.

Sussex Ancestry Last month we published an article about Grinsteadian Sarah Crowhurst, with her strong connections to the Salvation Army and the social changes she initiated locally. A couple of weeks ago, we were surprisingly contacted by her grand daughter who had read our article and, as it turns out, is also a poet (and award-winning author). Her father (Sarah’s son) was named William Bramwell Crowhurst after the founder of the Salvation Army. See states that, ‘My father was always deeply committed to his East Grinstead roots and we were very aware of his debt to his mother. Although I have lived in the north all my adult life, I feel the pull of my Sussex ancestry’. She thus sent us a poem, which certainly conjures appreciation for the lovely part of the country in which we live:
Homeland My little father was a ‘man of Sussex’, his town East Grinstead and his ancestry quite static, a line of labourers and domestic servants all from the tiny triangle of Groombridge, Ashurstwood and Forest Row. His mum, my granny, once the daughter of a tanner, became a champion of the poor, and now she features in the town museum, clad in her ‘Army’ uniform. Councillor, poet, mother of eight children, she raised her growing family in the ranks, and named my father, William Bramwell, for The Founder. When Dad was called to service in God’s Army, to storm the forts of darkness down in Plymouth, up to Darlington and all points in-between, he left his home and made us rootless, scattered. And we who sojourn in these northern uplands – adopt its accent, marry out and change our names – are branches of that family tree, the Finches, Sargeants, Crowhursts and the Wellers. We couldn’t be more Sussex if we tried. Marilyn Longstaff
New High Sheriff of West Sussex supports St. Catherine’s Hospice Jonathan Lucas, the owner of Warnham Park, was recently confirmed to be the next high sheriff by the Queen. Following tradition, she used a silver bodkin to ‘prick’ his name which was on a list written on parchment of all new high sheriffs for England and Wales. The story goes that the silver bodkin was originally used by Queen Elizabeth I, who was embroidering when she was asked to mark the names on the list. Another version offers that the bodkin was used because the list was, in old times, produced on vellum and pricking it is more permanent. The office, which goes back around 100 years, was once not popular particularly because of the financial liability that went with it, so pricking the name was an indelible mark. Here is a short ‘Q&A’ with Mr. Lucas about his new office: What does the office entail? The High Sheriff is the Sovereign’s representative in the county for all matters relating to the judiciary and the maintenance of law and order. This includes ensuring the protection of High Court judges on circuit, acting as returning officer for parliamentary elections in the county constituencies, proclaiming the accession of a new Sovereign and maintaining the loyalty of subjects to the Crown. They are also present at many official and public occasions, including royal visits, in the county. The High Sheriff has additional functions of bringing together a wide variety of individuals and undertaking duties to support and encourage voluntary and statutory organisations engaged in all aspects of law and order. The Office of High Sheriff is non-political and unpaid, and is held for one year from late March or early April. What do you intend to do during this year in office? I’m looking forward to meeting as many local people and organisations as possible, lending my support where I can and helping to raise vital funds for St Catherine’s Hospice in particular. Why did you choose to support St. Catherine’s Hospice in particular? I have supported St Catherine’s for a long time and have been involved with the charity for a number of years. My wife and I often hold events for day hospice patients at our home. We wish Mr. Lucas all the very best during his year in office.

What to do: 1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the chicken, onion, apple and garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Add the curry paste and cook for a few seconds, stirring. 2. Add the stock, raisins or sultanas and apricots. Bring up to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 35 minutes. Add a little more stock or water, if necessary. 3. Brown rice takes 30-35 minutes to cook, so put it on to cook in plenty of simmering water. 4. Just before serving, blend the cornflour with 2 tbsp cold water and add to the curry, stirring until thickened. Slice in the banana, cooking gently for another few moments. Check the seasoning, adding pepper, if needed. Serve, topping each portion with 1 tbsp yoghurt and accompanied with the rice. Garnish with coriander, if using.
Swap ‘Til You Drop The all new ‘EG Food Swap’ is starting this, but what’s it all about?
The Origins of Food Swapping The original concept of food swapping began in Brooklyn New York via ‘The Food Swap Network’, which gradually gathered pace with over 125 swap networks across The United States. As it gathered in popularity, this concept filtered across the pond into Europe – with the UK leading the way. The more local groups of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge having established their own following within the last year. Having attended a couple of these events now and had much discussion with like-minded members of our local community, it was clear that our market town should not pass up the opportunity to create a food swap community of its own.
How to Swap There appears to be two styles of swapping; One whereby the swapper places their goods on a table/surface with various swap cards, enabling fellow swappers to browse and state their interest as to what they would be prepared to swap on the relevant card.
The founders The alternative to this has much more of a market style, bartering/trading feel to it. The fun begins once the organiser(s) give the signal to ‘Start Swapping’. The atmosphere becomes instantly frenetic, as you find yourself flurrying to and fro between other swappers chatting about food and swapping your wares! For foodies it is a great way to combine the excitement of creating your favourite culinary creations whilst at the same time meeting new people within the local community. - Jacquie Russell For more information about the all-new East Grinstead Food Swap see: egfoodswap.com. The first official food swap is on Saturday 21st June, Market Square, High St, East Grinstead (outside Mocha Cafe). 10:45 for 11am start (start times approximate).

To Bee
to be This month I would like to pay homage to one of the most prolific foragers known. One, whom without its amazing abilities, the planet would never exist as we know it. I am talking about the Honey Bee. As a forager and herbalist I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Honey Bee. I would not have the abundance of plants available to me, were it not for the pollination carried out mostly by bees. In fact they pollinate more than three quarters of UK wild plants. They are so successful at pollinating plants that it would cost the farming industry an estimated ÂŁ1.8 Billion pounds to do this themselves. Imagine the cost implication on the food industry should this be a reality. Unfortunately this is starting to become a reality as bee populations are under threat and decline due to the use of Neonicotinoid pesticides. So before it is too late, I would love to make you more acquainted with the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera). Ever since man discovered the first wild beehive and tasted the sweet honey inside, we have had a close relationship with the Honey Bee. So precious was the honey to early man that they sought ways to keep bees and so began the first steps in beekeeping. Bees will forage up to about 3 miles from the hive if necessary, for both pollen and nectar. It is understood that a teaspoon of honey will contain the nectar of at least 5000 plants. Pollen is collected to feed young bee larva and in the process pollination occurs. Nectar is drunk by the bees and stored in their stomachs. On return to the hive this is regurgitated and the process of consuming and regurgitating is repeated into wax cells. The mixture is then fanned until most of the liquid has evaporated and what they are left with is honey. Honey is approximately 20% liquid and 80% solids. In this state it is very stable and sealed into wax cells until required by the colony. Along with plant enzymes, glucose and fructose, it is a complex combination of enzymes, plant pigment, organic acids, esters, antibiotic agents and trace minerals. There are over 75 different compounds which include carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. Unlike sugar, honey is high in number of vitamins and calcium.
Honey Bees are especially attracted to wild medicinal plants, the exact ones that I as a herbalist and forager, would be looking to use. And the nectar of these plants contains the medicinal properties of the plant. This would go a long way to explain the amazing healing properties that honey contains. It has been shown to have a marked effect in aiding the healing of wounds and burns and strengthening the weak and fragile. Mead, a wine made from fermenting honey with yeast, has throughout history been known as the elixir of life. Mead is the most ancient of fermented beverages. It pre-dates wine and beer and would have been discovered by ancient man. It is as complex, fragrant and exquisite as wine made from grapes. It not only tastes wonderful but stabilises the all the properties of honey previously discussed. Hence why I have been making and experimenting with it for many years now. It ages well once bottled. And can be infused with wild plants to further enhance certain medicinal aspects. So I would encourage any of you to please contact a local beekeeper and purchase raw honey from them direct. Not only would this of huge benefit to your health but you would be ensuring the survival of this endangered insect that we cannot afford to lose. Raw honey is unpasteurised and so still contains all the medicinal aspects and is of a huge benefit to those suffering from seasonal asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and hay fever. If you would like any further information on how to utilise honey for health or in the ancient techniques of making mead then please get in touch. Contact details below.

The Military on Ashdown Forest 1939-1945
By the time that war was declared on September 3rd 1939 the government had already drawn up plans to try to protect the general public. As early as 1935 East Sussex Council had set up an Air Raid Committee. The Home Office recognised the need for more fire protection and under the ARP Act of January 1938 a body of volunteers was trained to become the Auxiliary Fire Service. Then, in June 1939, a first police reserve was formed, mainly from retired officers.
National Registration took place on 29th September 1939 when householders were asked questions similar to those used for census details. After which identity cards were issued to every member of each household, gas masks were issued and details of how to black out both houses and motor vehicles. The Women’s Voluntary Services were given the responsibility for the housing of evacuees from the cities to the Ashdown Forest area. And in May of 1940 there was an appeal asking for ablebodied men between the ages of
18 and 65, not already engaged on National Service, to enrol in the Local Defence Volunteers. In July of the same year the name changed to the ever memorable and much beloved ‘Home Guard’. British Territorial troops moved into this area in 1939/1940. Kidbrooke Park, the Welsh Bakery and fields behind the Brambletye were used in Forest Row; Chapelwood Manor and Pippingford Park were used in Nutley; and at Chelwood Gate, the Isle of Thorns and Woodgate. The first troops to arrive at the Isle of Thorns were the 1st Battalion London Irish Rifles in October 1939. War murals of camp life were later found on the walls of the barn. Canadian soldiers so after moved into the Isle of Thorns and would, in the pursuing years, form a very strong presence in the whole of the Ashdown Forest area. Woodgate housed many regiments, both British and Canadian during the war. For instance, the Royal Corps of Signals were there in 1941.

In Chapelwood Manor, Nutley, British troops arrived in early 1940 to train, and eventually landed in Norway. The Norway campaign lasted from 9th April to 10th June 1940. By July 1940 it was thought that a German invasion would take place in September, this ushered in the first large scale exercise to take place on Ashdown Forest. The New Zealand brigades 2 NZEF(UK) came from Aldershot and had to cover the southern approaches to Crowborough, and to counter attack any landings which may begin on the south coast, east of the river Ouse. A now famous, secret radio transmitter “Aspidistra” was also built underground in a bunker at King’s Standing in 1941/1942. Canadian troops, the Queen’s Own Rifles of Toronto were, by the autumn of 1941, stationed in Pippingford Park, Nutley. This particular regiment landed on Juno beach on D Day ahead of the tanks, and tragically suffered the highest number of Canadian casualties. The first Canadian troops to move into Chapelwood Manor,
This decorated gun tractor and ammunition trailer was the transport used by Major H.E. Brown and his bride, a Canadian nursing sister on their wedding day. The celebrations were remembered for a long time by this artillery regiment. was the 3rd Canadian Division Reinforcement Company on November 9th 1941. As the camp was still under construction at the time, one third of the men had to be engaged in making paths using cinders and rubble trucked from London. This particular company then moved to Hailsham late May 1942. But In August 1942 the 17th Field Regiment RCA (Royal Canadian Artillery) moved into Chapelwood Manor, thus keeping the Canadian presence in this area. They were subsequently sent to Italy in 1943.
Orme Payne, Bill Sickney, Gordie Bannerman and George Cooper at Chapelwood Manor, 1942.
Another Canadian Airforce regiment, the 15th Field Regiment RCA, moved into the area in 1943 and left in July 1944 for Normandy. So it came as no great surprise when, in 2010, approximately 70 Canadian hymn books with regimental stamps of the 15th Field Regiment RCA, the 17th Field Regiment RCA, H.Q. RCA 4th Canadian Armoured Division and 5th Canadian Armoured Division dated 1943, were found in Nutley Church grounds.
Canadian officers slept and ate in Pippingford Manor, which the Canadians called “ Pip House”

Sergeant David Hazzard, a Canadian from Toronto with The Queen’s Own Rifles was selected for officer training at Aldershot, and in March 1942 graduated as a lieutenant and returned to his regiment at Pippingford Park in charge of a platoon.
Nutley girls, Sadie, Daphne, Gwendoline and another girl, Chris shared picnics on the Ashdown Forest. A painting by Major W.A. Olgilvie MBE depicts Ram II tanks of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division training on Ashdown Forest in September 1942. It is shown on the title page of the official history of the Canadian army in the Second World War with another painting of tanks on Ashdown Forest on display in the Imperial War Museum, London. The Crowborough army camps were home to both British and Canadian troops from early 1941. In the early Spring of 1942 British troops were based at Maresfield Camp and Crowborough Camp, and sailed as part of the 8th Armoured Division to the Western Desert in May 1942. In fact, General Montgomery inspected these troops in April 1942. The Fort Garry Horse Regiment with their tanks was at Crowborough East Barracks and West Camp from 20 October 1942 to 28 December 1942. The 1st. Hussars with tanks were at Crowborough Warren Camp in December 1942 and moved to Hove in January 1943. Both these tank regiments later had the Duplex Drive (Swimming Tanks) and landed on Juno beach on D Day. In Forest Row by September 1943 an ambulance unit of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps was billeted in some of the larger houses of the Ashdown Forest area and in Broadstone Farm. Many large houses had been requisitioned by the government for housing troops. For instance, Plaw Hatch, the home of Lord and Lady Kindersley was divided to house army officers, with the troops in the grounds. Birch Grove the home of the then future Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, housed around 70 evacuees from a london school. He and his family thus moved into a cottage on the estate.
Regiment moved into the camp in Maresfield. They were equipped with Sherman tanks and trained on the forest until they left on 18th July 1944 for Normandy. Major David Vivian Curry who belonged to this regiment was awarded the only VC of the Normandy campaign. He survived the war. In this area, many of the roads and forest had been damaged by tanks. Major Curry had also in fact been the officer in charge of compensation claims for such damage. With Canadian troops leaving Pippingford Park for D Day, more troops moved in to follow the first landings. A V1 Flying bomb on 5 July 1944 killed 8 soldiers and injured 17. Though Luckily most of the regiment had recently moved further south for embarkation to France, therefore denying more casualties. On 29 August 1944 another V1 bomb landed in this area, on Marsh Green Military Camp, Hartfield killing 3 soldiers and injuring 45. There was considerable damage to the camp. Pippingford Park was later maintained as a rehabilitation centre for Canadian troops in 1945. Bringing Hope where it Counts Katrina Hamill who works at Town Council, recently met the organisers of one of the Phillippine’s disaster relief charities ‘Peter Project’. Here is a Q&A with Katrina to get the low-down: Please explain ‘The Peter Project’? The project helps fishermen who lost their boats in Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) and is a part of the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation. It is one of the fortunate beneficiaries of the generosity of the people of East Grinstead. The donations from the ‘Flame of Hope Concert’ at Chequer Mead went to build 10 new motorised fishing boats; these are assisting village folk to be self-sufficient by helping those who lost their livelihood in the aftermath of the typhoon.
coordinator on how the programme worked and gave advice on sustainable fishing. I heard first-hand how the typhoon had impacted their lives and how grateful they were towards the people of East Grinstead for their generous help through the foundation, and how all of this was instrumental to their recovery.
2. How did you come to be there at the same time?
What will the follow up be later on?
Whilst I was on my family holiday I was contacted by the foundation and was given the good news that the boats were ready to be handed over to the families and asked if I could be present. I grabbed the chance and couldn’t believe the opportune timing. I was so lucky!
There will be a six monthly follow up by the foundation to make sure the boats are being used in accordance with the agreement, and that they are used responsibly towards their livelihoods. Any breach can result in having their boats taken away and given to another recipient on the waiting list.
What response did you get when you were there, what happened?
Other monies raised by our town are being spent on the restoration of a school to be named after East Grinstead. More about this in a later issue...
It was a tear-jerking moment for me as well as the families. I’ve never met so many extremely grateful recipients. They were briefed by the foundation

Lions, Tigers & Bears, Oh My! As the three had found comfort in each other during their years of mistreatment, the staff soon realized that they shouldn’t be separated.
Baloo the bear, Leo the lion, and Shere Khan the tiger (known as BLT) were brought together as 2-monthold cubs and have since grown up as a family. The unlikely trio were originally owned by a drug dealer as a status symbol but he didn’t care for them properly, this lead to poor health and injuries. Over 10 years ago they were brought to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit centre in the US that cares for animals in need.
Some years later the government passed new laws requiring big cat enclosures to have 16 foot fences put up, which were to take effect late last year. Baloo, Leo and Shere Khan’s fence was only 8 feet high. If the fence was not put up then the three animals would have to split up... The only problem was, the new fence would cost a staggering $489,000! Luckily, after lots of public interest and support the sanctuary was able to raise the funds in time through a series of challenges and crowd-funding. And so once more, all is safe and sound in the world of BLT.

Local History Notes
Herbert Musgrave, MM by Dorothy Hatswell Herbert Musgrave was born on June 11 1875 in Adelaide, South Australia. His father, Sir Anthony Musgrave, was a career diplomat who had held several posts in various countries of the British Empire before becoming Governor General of South Australia in the late 18 hundreds. Herbert’s mother, Jeannie Lucinda Field, was his father’s second wife. His first wife, Christiana Elizabeth Byam had died after only five years of marriage. There had been two children of their union, William Anthony Byam Musgrave and another son. th
Herbert had two other older brothers, Dudley Field Musgrave, born in 1873 and Arthur David Musgrave, born in 1874. He also had a sister, Joyce, born in 1871 who was tragically killed in an accident when she was only three years old. Their life in Australia was brought to an abrupt end by the sudden death of Sir Anthony on October 9th 1888. He was dressing for dinner and was struck down by extreme stomach pains and died later the same night. Lady Musgrave subsequently moved to England with her three sons and set up home in Hurst-an-Clays in Ship Street. She lived there until her own death in 1920. In the 1891 Census Lady Musgrave and Herbert, aged fourteen, are staying at a hotel in Amesbury. This is in itself not surprising, but the fact that her stepson William A.B. Musgrave is with them, is perhaps. The son of Sir Anthony and his first wife, William was then 35 years old and a barrister. He is at that time unmarried though the later census of 1901 shows him as a visitor at Hurst-an-Clays together with his wife, Ethel and daughters, Joyce and Elizabeth aged two and one, together with their nurse. It is pleasing that Jeannie Musgrave (Lady Musgrave) kept in close touch with her stepson and that he called his older daughter after his half-sister Joyce who had died in an accident twenty five years earlier. At the time of William’s wedding his address was given as Hurst-anClays, East Grinstead. Herbert himself, along with his older brother, Arthur, both went into the army. Herbert served throughout the Boer War, when he was mentioned in dispatches on seven occasions winning both the Queen’s Medal and the King’s Medal! He then stayed on for four years afterwards in the South African Constabulary, following which he spent four years in Malta.
In 1909, back in England, Herbert had witnessed the landing at Dover of Louis Bleriot who had just made the first flight across the English Channel. Herbert was very excited at the possibilities for the military this achievement opened up. He attempted to persuade his superiors to pursue the use of aircraft in war. He was strongly resisted. Haig was very much against it and Sir William Nicholson, Chief of Staff from 1908-1912 is quoted as saying: “aviation ...is a useless and expensive fad, advocated by a few individuals whose ideas are unworthy of attention.” In 1912 Herbert learned to fly and joined the newly formed Royal Flying Corps, the forerunner of the

Royal Air Force, later the same year. Placed in charge of a small group, he had under his command, J.T.C.Moore-Brabazon, later Lord Brabazon and H.C.T Dowding, who went on to become Air Chief Marshall, Lord Dowding. Musgrave experimented with balloons and kites. He went on to develop strategies for bombing enemy targets and, perhaps most importantly, telegraphy. In fact, his work changed the very face of military history. He was recalled to the Army and was sent to France. Having been wounded in February 1915, he received the D.S.O. (Distinguished Service Order). While on leave in England he married Georgiana Hopkins and their daughter, Jeannie Lucinda was born the following year. He returned to France in December 1917 and was on patrol behind enemy lines when he was mortally wounded by a rifle-grenade on June 2nd 1918. His remains were interred in Esquelbecq Cemetery. His son, Herbert William Dudley Musgrave, was born a month after his death. The family home at that time was Lantern House, Fairlight, near Hastings. Herbert’s brother, Arthur, also served in France and with the Royal Horse and Field Artillery and was awarded the D.S.O. He was wounded on August 2nd
1918 and left France in October. He went on to have a distinguished career and ended as a Brigadier General. His portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Although he died in Scotland, he is buried in St Swithuns Churchyard and the carved oak door into the vicar’s vestry is in his memory. Herbert and Arthur’s older brother, Dudley Field Musgrave, died of typhoid fever in Bombay in 1895, aged only twenty two. His death is also marked by a plaque on the wall of St Swithuns Churchyard near the grave of their mother Jeannie - Lady Musgrave. In fact, the Musgrave name appears throughout the British Empire. Rivers, islands, mountains ranges and harbours bear the name. In East Grinstead we have Musgrave Avenue. Of Herbert, who contributed so much to the development of the use of aircraft in wartime, it was said, “He desired no personal advancement and would have thought no honour so great as to die for his country. Such men, though the records of their lives are buried under a mass of tedious detail, are the engineers of victory.” Quite a memorial!

For the love of EG ... ‘Meridian Line’ , the new YouTube video is a must see! As part of the drive to make EG a DESTINATION the EGBA commissioned a song and video which is sure to lighten up your day. You may even see at least one person you recognise! It went up on YouTube and after the first day it had received 4000 views which is amazing! So don’t miss out and tell your friends & family. The song was written and performed by George Brinkhurst – a local musician. Recorded by Martin Smith in The Garage Studio, East Grinstead. And the video was directed, recorded and engineered by Jonty Egerton of EggMedia. 32 | June 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts
East Grinstead’s very own You would think East Grinstead’s Ashley & Lloyd Howells had won the Jackpot! Not only are their acting careers steaming ahead but they can be Lloyd proud that, against the odds, they both survived the rigourous vetting process to secure their places at the brits School. These days it is difficult enough to get one child into the BRITS, let alone two. Currently, there is normally between 2500 to 5000 applicants per year for the entire intake of only 200 places! Only 10% of places are available and offered to students living outside the London LEA catchment which means only 20 places are available outside of London per year. So no small feat to secure a place! In fact while Ash is carving out a stage career for himself, Lloyd, who has also appeared in films such as Horrid Henry, has just finished filming some high-flying advert spots! Not only was he Ashley in a recent Boots ad but he will also appear in a major role in the ‘ITV World Cup’ advert. So along with people from across the world, we’ll be seeing Lloyd on our screens this Summer. We wish both boys all the best of luck in their future careers.

Rowing Solo across ‘The Pond’
Sharpthorne-based Danny Fitzgibbon will row the North Atlantic solo and unassisted from East to West, starting in October 2014 in Gran Canaria and finishing in Barbados in the West Indies roughly 3 months later, depending on ocean currents, stoms etc. He will cross 3000 miles of ocean up to 4000 metres deep, roughly along the tropic of Capricorn. Here, he explain why he’s undertaking this challenge and more about the experience ahead: What inspired you to want to row across the Atlantic? When I was a kid I read a book by Peter Bird. He was doing all kinds of rowing at sea from Scotland to Norway. It just got me really interested. I always loved the sea and the weather.... I recently met up with a friend of mine, former British Thai Boxing champion Pete Dwan, who works tirelessly giving Drug Education lectures to schools. He is really good at what he does, he gets fantastic feedback from the kids, parents and teachers, 100% positive! He is currently making a dvd that will be going out to every school (32,000) in the UK. He gets no funding for all this and so he works nights to support himself and his family. So I decided that this challenge would be a great opportunity to support his work. Have you ever done anything like this before?
Business Profile:
Shuttleworth
Painting & Decorating City & Guilds trained Steve Shuttleworth has been in the Painting & Decorating trade for 32 years now. As well as giving customers peace of mind by being fully insured he also hopes to offer a high standard of finish to his work, whilst representing good value for money. Here are some testimonials from happy customers:
What is going to be the hardest part?
“These guys did a fantastic job redecorating my entire house. Very competitive prices and a extremely polite and tidy team of decorators!!” - G.Toms, East Grinstead.
The hardest part I think would be the loneliness. Leaving friends and family and doing nothing but rowing for 2-3 months with no respite. When you get storms and huge waves its a bit tougher when you are completely alone. I have heard from a person who did it before that, on a cloudy moonless night. There are no stars, no light at all only a torch maybe. You can’t see your hand in front of you, you know there are sharks out there but you can’t see them...... I said “thanks for that one, pal” :-)
“I would not hesitate to recommend these chaps exceptionally high standard of work and just a pleasure to have around” - Neville Bellamy, Cuckfield
Nothing quite like this! I have done extreme sports however, like skydiving. I did close to 300 jumps, freefall and some competition skydiving. I also worked on fishing boats in the North Atlantic called long-liners catching tuna and swordfish. I have always enjoyed wide open spaces going back-packing in the Australian outback for a year. I also lived in Texas for a while and worked on ranches and even learned how to rope cattle. My wife and I went for a drive in Africa and went all around South Africa and Namibia. Had a blast all in the name of adventure!!
What do you need in terms of local support? What would be really good is for local businesses who would like to sponsor this campaign. We are offering very good opportunities for businesses to get their company name on the boat. We put them on our website with links etc. We can really promote their business and in return they are helping an excellent cause. What do you think the highlight of the trip will be? Sunrises and Sunsets like never seen before!!
“Very accommodating decorators always working around us to let us get on with the day to day running of my business” - Dr A M Lewars
Having dolphins swimming around the boat, whales, flying fish. Also knowing it will go towards supporting Drug Education in schools.
