Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The Heyday of Nymans Leonard & Maud Messel The National Trust’s Nymans, in Handcross, is an outstanding 20th-century garden, set around a romantic house and ruins. Katy Brown, author of ‘Great Gardens of Sussex: An Historical Journey’ gives us a fascinating insight into its history and famous owners, the Messel family: When Leonard Messel inherited Nymans in 1915 he was 43, the same age that his father Ludwig had been when he bought the property in 1889. Leonardo’s upbringing had been affluent, thanks to his father’s success as a stockbroker in the City, but it had also introduced him to the artistic and cultural aspects of life, for Ludwig loved music and was a connoisseur of the arts. After Eton and Oxford Leonard spent some time in his father’s native Germany, gaining experience of the financial world, before

cartoonist for Punch and though her upbringing was less affluent than Lennies’ it had fostered her considerable creative talents. These were to have a great impact on Nymans and were inherited by her son, Oliver, the famous theatrical designer, and her

Introducing Cranwell Wealth Solutions Tell us about your business? We offer bespoke financial advice - a personal wealth management service, tailored to fit you. Regardless of your wealth, everyone has a need for advice. Whether it’s finding the best mortgage, preparing for your retirement or making sure your children will see as much of their inheritance as possible, advice will only be valuable if it’s tailored to you. This key principle is the reason why I established Cranwell Wealth Solutions. How did you end up sitting where you are? After working for a number of large financial organisations, I felt that the business had moved further away from building customer relationships and more about one off transactions, I don’t believe financial advice should be transactional, but should be built on long term relationships, this is the reason I decided to establish the business. What sort of client would you expect to come knocking on your door? We work with a range of clients. Whether they are just starting out in life trying to get onto the property ladder, they require advice on where to invest or perhaps they are looking for a secure and planned retirement. People often assume they need a large amount of wealth before they seek advice, but this simply isn’t the case. Instead we find the best way to help them reach their goals is with appropriate advice now and on an on-going basis. Tell us about the challenges facing your clients over the coming year?

Steve Palmer, Principal Cranwell Wealth Solutions

a myriad of choices available. Achieving a successful outcome means spending huge amounts of time researching those choices and options. And yet most of us have neither the time nor, it has to be said, the inclination to make the most of what is on offer.

With challenging economic conditions and low interest rates it is important we make sure our pounds are working hard, however for whatever reason, there exists today an obsession with the short term and this manifests itself with investors buying the latest fashion, only then to be disappointed. What really must matter to investors is the longer-term performance of their investments, rather than the outcome for any particular year, because short-term results are illusory and have little or nothing to do with the preservation of wealth over the medium to long term and therefore stabilise ours and our families’ future.

But please take the time; your financial situation is unique so the core of wealth management should be a personal service and a long-term relationship with a chosen adviser combining ongoing, regular and comprehensive reviews of your personal finances.

What advice can you offer to our readers regarding personal finance?

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and the value may therefore fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment placed into equity funds would not have the security of capital associated with a deposit account with a bank or building society.

Wealth management is about taking care of all your financial needs together with those of your family, but the reality is that very few of us manage our finances as best we might. This is hardly surprising the financial world is complex and fast changing, with

The dislocation of the war years saw Maud involved with the Red Cross and Leonard recruiting and training for the Buffs. The idea of moving to Nymans after 17 happy years at Balcombe did not appeal and Maud agreed only on condition that when the war ended and the situation allowed they would undertake considerable building works to change the house to her liking. She had a long wait – it wasn’t finished until 1928 – but it was Maud whose taste determined the nature of the house whose ruins we see today. Working closely – though not always amicably – with two sets of architects, Maud brought to life her ideal of a stone manor house more typically found in the West Country. Where once there had been a regency villa there was now a house which looked as if it had been built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Writing in Country Life in 1932 Christopher Hussey called Maud’s Nymans “an exquisite example of pastiche – a form of invention that…… is capable of producing works of art in their own right” and praised the charming taste shown in its formation. Oliver and Anne Messel as children in the garden at Nymans

grandson, Anthony Armstrong-Jones. Though initially uncertain about marrying into this family of German Jewish origins, especially as she was enjoying the admiration of several other suitors at the time, Maud finally accepted Lennie and they enjoyed a long and happy marriage. Photographs show Lennie as an attractive, gentle young man with dark colouring and slightly wavy hair. He could be temperamental and short tempered but he was devoted to his “Mite”. Quite soon the couple were dividing their time between a house in London and Balcombe House in Surrey, where Maud created a loving and beautiful home for their three children, Linley (b.1899), Anne (b.1902) and Oliver (b.1904). With its plain white interiors filled with all the pretty feminine things collected on holidays abroad, Maud ensured that Balcombe House was always full of flowers. Meanwhile in the London house Leonard could display his beautiful antique furniture and his growing collection of china, glass, fans and Japanese netsukes.

During the 30’s running Nymans, as well as a large house in Lancaster Gate, would have kept Maud occupied while Leonard was working in London. There was a staff of 16 as well as the gardening staff, including a butler, 2 footmen, a cook and kitchen maid, a head housemaid, 2 or 3 under housemaids, a scullery maid, a head chauffeur, a batman for Leonard, a lady to look after the linen and an oddjob man. There were 7 motor cars, including 2 Rolls Royces. In the garden the splendid James Comber continued as Head Gardener with 7 assistants. Maud was helped by her secretary cum personal assistant Daphne Dengate, daughter of the local vicar, and her lady’s maid, Barbara Adamson. Both worked for the family for some 60 years, which reflects well on both sides! The two women became friends of their employers and “Ady” stayed on, living in the nursery wing at Nymans after Maud’s death. Daphne remembered visits to the National Gallery with Leonard and regarded the Messels as “cultured people (who) knew such a lot”. In the mornings, after Leonard had left for London, Daphne would help Maud with household

organisation, including instructions for the cook and housekeeper, and writing out cheques for her to sign. Post would be brought in by a footman who collected any outgoing letters. Correspondence could be considerable, especially once the garden was open to the public. In the afternoons Maud might go for a drive, often with her dog Pobs.

were served tea by the butler. Each summer, Daphne remembered, “the big hall was simply full of all these lovely things and Mrs. Messel’s friends were invited and they would come and purchase things”.

Leonard meanwhile continued his father’s work of developing the garden with the able support of James Comber. The 30’s were a golden age for Maud and Leonard were Nymans and Leonard’s more active in the local activities in the Royal community than Leonard’s Horticultural Society gave parents had ever been. it a higher profile in the Maud continued her work gardening world and Oliver Messel working on a model for a stage set with the Red Cross and increased his confidence. was involved locally in the Leonard served on RHS British Legion, the Mothers’ Union and the Womens’ committees and as a judge and he and Comber often Institute. A party was held at Nymans every August won prizes for their blooms. He also collected one for the 2 local WIs and there was an annual Christmas of the best horticultural libraries in the world, and party for the tenants. Maud also organised an annual both he and Comber were awarded the prestigious May Day pageant, complete with a procession, May Victorian Medal of Honour for Horticulture. The Queen and “dancing and feasting at Nymans”. Maud’s garden was opened to the public for charity and the daughter Anne took part one year as Maid Marian, work of Ludwig, Leonard and Comber made it one of with Daphne and the gamekeeper’s daughter as her maids. The Messels loved parties, often impromptu and frequently in fancy dress, which both Maud and Leonard greatly enjoyed. Maud’s creative talents were also used to design and make costumes for the local Shakespeare Society. Brought up to be aware of those less fortunate, Maud realised that some young women in the area were unable to earn any pocket money because of their domestic duties. So she set up The Nymans’ Needlework Guild and employed a Miss Warren as teacher, sending her to be properly trained at the Royal School of Needlework. Maud loved embroidery and lace and used them to give style to her romantic and individual dresses. The local girls made table mats, embroidered bags and a host of other pretty things. They came each Wednesday to Nymans and

Armstrong-Jones when he visited his grandparents. Maud and Lennie, aging and in increasingly poor health survived the war but in 1947 the house suffered a disastrous fire and the Messels had to move out. They celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1948, surrounded by the love of family, friends and employees. Daphne Dengate wrote “..I wish you always the joy and happiness and beauty of mind and spirit which you bring into the lives of all around you”.

Leonard and Maud in old age

Sussex’s great gardens. Though he spent much of his time in London Leonard served as a member of the Parochial Church Council in Staplefield and he and Maud set up a childrens’ corner, provided with books, in the church. From 1936 he became High Sheriff of Sussex. In addition he was a mason and designed a coat of arms for the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers. During these years Nymans welcomed many visitors, mainly family and close friends, rather than the guests more formally

entertained in London. Leonard’s brother and sisters and their families, Maud’s brother and friends such as the Gielguids came for shooting parties, for Goodwood and for informal weekends. They enjoyed food provided from the kitchen garden and relaxed in the beautiful house and increasingly famous garden. The coming of the Second World War brought an end to this golden time. Nymans, with a much depleted staff in both house and garden, took in a boys’ school evacuated from London, and the boys were company for Anthony

Leonard became increasingly aware of the looming problem of death duties and worried about the future of Nymans. Neither of his two sons wanted to run the estate and his daughter Anne, now married to Lord Rosse, already had two homes to care for, so it was willed to the National Trust. Leonard died in 1953 but Maud lived on, increasingly crippled with arthritis, but enjoying the garden. She learned of her grandson’s engagement to Princess Margaret just before her death in 1960 at the age of 84.

Calling the Mare Many customs and traditions occur around harvest time, which most often occurs in September and is the climax of the agricultural year. Going back to medieval times, a tradition took place as the last of the crops were gathered in named, ‘Calling the Mare’ or ‘Crying the Mare’ or in Cornwall & Devon, ‘Crying the Neck’ - neck was the Cornish version for ‘nag’. The idea was that the farmers all wanted to prove they had the best reapers and keep their crops secure from the ravages of wild horses. So they tried to gather them in before the neighbouring farmer did. With the final sheaf of the harvest the reapers made a rough ‘mare shape’. The celebrating reapers would form themselves into two bands and chant something along the lines of the following exchange: 1st band: ‘I have her, I have her, I have her’ 2nd band: ‘what hast thee, what hast thee, what hast thee’ 1st band: ‘a mare, a mare, a mare’ 2nd band: ‘Whose is her’, 3 times. 1st band: names their master 2nd band: ‘Where shall we send her’, 3 times. 1st band: ‘To___’ (names a neighbouring farmer whose corn is still standing!)

The mare-shaped-sheaf was quickly sent round to a farmer who had not finished harvesting his crops to remind him that wild horses would be after them should he not gather them in quickly! Evidently, once the harvest was secured from these pesky creatures, it was a time to rejoice and gloat over a tardier neighbour. Incidentally, breeds of wild horses were widespread across England in Medieval times, but there are almost no true wild horses existing today as most of those found roaming in such places as the New Forest are feral or semi-feral (returned to the wild, having once been domesticated). The farmer, who received the mare made of wheat, would then have to work quickly to see if he could finish before another neighbouring farmer did; if so he could pass on the mare to the next farmer along. Finally, the farmer who was last to finish had to keep the mare all winter, having it on display for all to see... (a tough life!).

Special Open Days at Sackville House. While many of East Grinstead Living’s readers will be aware of the delights of Sackville College, and hopefully have had the chance to explore it for themselves, not too many of you may know that there is also a Sackville House. It’s located in the High Street a bit further up the road from the college, just about opposite the Rose and Crown. You might recognise it from the imposing wooden gate protecting its courtyard, and the small metal grill set in the top allowing you a tantalising peek within For the last 19 years or so this building has been owned by the Landmark Trust, a charity that rescues and restores old buildings and then allows the public

to rent them for holiday use. So the good news is that we’ll all get the rare chance to have a look inside this intriguing building without having to pay to stay there! Make a note in your diaries for the weekend of 13th to 14th of September and come and take a look over this splendid 1520 building with its amazing 630 foot long garden and intriguing interior. The building will be open between 10am and 4pm on both days and you get the chance to see all over the building from the attic to the bottom of the garden. Putting a price on priceless Some household items, particularly those that have been inherited, collected or have sentimental importance, have a value beyond their financial worth. In this issue, Annie Streeter and Jane Cowans, Agents at the Haywards Heath office of NFU Mutual, answer your questions about valuing and insuring your treasured possessions.

Which items do homeowners typically undervalue or overlook when calculating their home contents insurance? The items most commonly undervalued include artwork, jewellery and watches, especially those items which have been inherited.

Why do homeowners fail to value inherited items correctly? Items which have a sentimental value are often not looked at in a monetary light and, if they have been passed down through generations, they may have appreciated in value without anyone realising their true financial worth.

If something is of sentimental value, surely it doesn’t matter what it’s worth? Enjoying an object or piece of art for the memories it holds and its significance to your family is part of the beauty of heirlooms; however, if the item is lost, damaged or stolen, it affects a family’s ability to pass down a piece of history to the next generation. By correctly valuing and insuring items, you are ensuring that future generations will not miss out on the sentimental importance or financial benefits that these items carry with them.

How common are insurance claims for jewellery and watches? In 2013, NFU Mutual paid out £3.4 million for lost or stolen jewellery and watches. The problem with jewellery is that many pieces are unique, having been handed down through generations or made to commemorate a special occasion such as a wedding, anniversary or birthday. If these items are stolen the sentimental loss can be equal to, if not greater, than the financial loss suffered.

Is it worth having items professionally valued? If you own a number of antiques, works of art or other valuables it is important to get a proper insurance valuation, and ensure this is kept up to date. The art and antiques markets fluctuate frequently, with certain items, or pieces from certain

periods rising much faster than inflation. To help you place an appropriate value on your treasured possessions, NFU Mutual offers access to valuation experts with wide ranging experience, from fine art to jewellery.

How often should I review my contents insurance? We recommend that valuations are revisited every three years. Many people do not reassess the value of their contents for decades, forgetting that things like gold and art appreciate steeply over this time. Being aware of these changes in value means you can rest assured that you have the appropriate level of cover.

What should I look for when choosing an insurer for my home & contents? It’s important to look at the ‘whole package’ – service, cover and price. When choosing an insurer, it can be tempting to simply select your provider on the basis of cost; however, you should satisfy yourself that the level of cover and service provided will meet your needs. The true test of an insurance company will come when you have to make a claim so it’s well worth talking to other people about their experiences or even asking the insurance company to provide you with testimonials from satisfied customers.

How important are local branches? Our customers tell us they find it a pleasure to discuss their requirements face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere where we have a detailed knowledge of the area and the many local issues which might affect a customer’s insurance needs. This is particularly important if a customer has to make a claim against their policy as it is often more reassuring to talk to a familiar face.

Can mindfulness really help us stress less and enjoy life more? A mindfulness-based stress reduction course starts on Thursday 23 October, 7pm - 9pm, at East Court, East Grinstead. The first session is a free taster – so why not give it a go? The course is facilitated by Sue Bolton BSc MSc. She trained in mindfulness –based stress reduction at Bangor University, a meditator for 20 years, she has run courses in workplaces, schools and retreats. Here she answers some FAQs about mindfulness. I keep hearing claims that mindfulness can achieve so much - ‘reduce stress, improve well-being, develop focus and decision making, increase empathy and creativity, and even boost the immune-system’. Do I detect a whiff of snake oil? While some of the media reports are sensationalist or over simplistic, it’s absolutely true that mindfulness can give you the tools to manage your stress and to lead a fuller and richer life. Research studies at Oxford, Cambridge, Exeter and Bangor universities confirm the positive effects of mindfulness; and companies such as Google, TFL and Goldman Sachs, who run regular mindfulness courses, are convinced of the benefits for their employees. What is mindfulness and how has it helped you? Mindfulness is about being in the moment – like you are when looking at a beautiful sunset. Too often we can be worrying about the past or thinking of all the things we have to do in the future – and we miss the present. It has changed my life. When I ran a busy school

science department I used mindfulness to focus on the most important tasks amid the myriad daily pressures and become calmer, more creative and more engaged with the pupils. Even my husband has noticed – and appreciates – the difference! What have people said about the course? Most people report they gain lasting benefits such as: more energy, enthusiasm and appreciation of life, an increased ability to relax and experience calm, a greater ability to manage stressful situations. Here are a couple of comments from participants on courses earlier this year: ‘Life is still full, but I handle it more effectively. I enjoy life more’. ‘This is an excellent course….one of the best investments of both time and money I have made in a long time.’ Cost £195 (includes CDs & handouts) queries/bookings call:

Nail health

Who doesn’t want strong, healthy nails that resist peeling, flaking or breaking? To aid in our nail care regime we are often advised to wear gloves for washing up, cleaning, and gardening, not to use our nails as tools and to oil regularly but is it too much faff? However a little understanding of why and how our nails respond to our environment may encourage you to reach for the nail oil and those gloves!! Nails with too much water are spongy and far too flexible – like particle board left in the rain and nails with inadequate water will split and fracture like dry autumn leaves… sound familiar? Our body produces oil naturally (sebum) but not enough to keep up with our constant hand washing, showering, cleaning and general living. In order to maintain the perfect ratio of water and oil one must replace oils that are lost. You can think of your nail plate as a book with 100 pages that are nicely glued together with sebum (body oil). When our nails are immersed in any fluid the nail plate absorbs the fluid, the natural oils are washed away and as the excess fluid evaporates the pages of the book begin to separate and cause lifting and peeling. Note that bare nails will absorb almost one–third of their weight in water. Unless the oils are replaced the nail plate will be prone to excess dryness. One must use the utmost care for 60 minutes after immersing natural nails in any liquid for more than 60 seconds!!!

Nails should have the perfect blend of 18% moisture and 5% oil. This 5% oil is enough to trap the ideal amount of water in the finger nails… but not oils are the same! Jojoba is closest in molecular structure to sebum and can actually penetrate your nail plate and work its way between the 100 layers of keratin fibres. Any worthwhile nail oil should list Jojoba as a top three ingredient. Applying your nail oil regularly….. 3x daily for 3 days then twice daily will kick start a nail rehydration programme! Apply to the cuticle area and rub into the nail plate. It will disappear into the nails and cuticles quickly as the oil is absorbed and takes only a couple of minutes. Maintaining the perfect ratio of water to oil, with the use of a jojoba based oil, and protecting nails against prolonged exposure to water with gloves will improve your nail health, resulting in strong flexible nails that will stand up to the rigors of daily life. Gardening in September By Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Refreshed and invigorated after your summer holidays you’ll be ready to get your garden in good shape for the autumn and winter. There are plenty of good autumn flowering plants available so you can have colour right through to early November. September is a good month for maintenance, tidying and preparation. I never like to leave these jobs too late as before you know it, we’re Christmas shopping and the ground is too wet and cold.

Perennials Cut back perennials that have finished flowering and deadhead and tidy those that have more flowers to come. If you’re keen for more Autumn colour then look for Asters, Japanese Anemone, Crocosmia and Schizostylis. For good colour throughout the winter consider Heuchera. Now is also a good time to plant hardy perennials ready for next year – especially as you will often find them on special offers! As you tidy the borders put on a good thick mulch and just leave it to overwinter.

Containers and Pots These are probably starting to look tired now so empty them and plant them up with a range of spring flowering bulbs. Put good drainage in the bottom of the pot and then fill with a potting compost mixed with grit - this helps prevent the bulbs getting too wet. You can top the top with winter flowering pansies to give colour until the spring when the bulbs come up.

Shrubs and Hedges It’s a good time now to plant or move evergreen hedges and conifers. Beech, Hornbeam, Leylandi and Thuja can all be clipped now as well as Yew, Box, Lonicera nitida and Privet hedges.

Lawns These can be maintained and repaired now. Fill any bare patches, scarify and hollow tine and then apply a good autumn feed.

Fruit and vegetables Harvest your marrows, sweetcorn, courgettes, beans, lettuce, cabbages and start to lift your root vegetables and main crop potatoes. Pick the fruit as it ripens, autumn raspberries, apples and maybe some of the pears will be ready. Plant up spring cabbage and winter onions.

Bulbs and Biennials Wall flowers, digitalis and polyanthus can all be transplanted into the garden. Plan how you want your bulbs to look and then lay them out and plant them. There is not always a lot to show for your efforts this month as some of the work is hidden underground, but you will be well rewarded in spring as your bulbs and other plantings start to come into flower – and it’s a welcome surprise!

Moroccan meatballs recipe As the kids go back to school this month, try this take on a well-loved recipe.

What to do:

Ingredients: 2-3tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1tsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground 1tsp coriander seed, toasted and ground 1 x 400g can tomatoes 2tsp sugar 1 x 30g pack fresh coriander, finely chopped half a 30g pack fresh mint, finely chopped 1 egg, lightly whisked 500g (1lb) beef mince 50g (2oz) fresh breadcrumbs optional: plain yogurt & pitta bread to serve

For the Sauce: Heat a little oil in a pan and soften the onions, garlic and spices for a few minutes. Put half of the mixture in a bowl to cool. Add the tomatoes and sugar to the remaining mixture in the pan, season and simmer for about 15 mins until reduced. Now add the herbs, egg, beef mince and the breadcrumbs to the cooled onions, then season and mix everything well with your hands. Shape into walnut-sized balls. Heat the rest of the oil and fry the meatballs until golden. Add the meatballs to the sauce and simmer for a few minutes until they’re cooked through. Serve with the yogurt & pitta bread as desired. Optional: If you prefer substitute lamb mince.

Local History Notes

EDGAR MARCH CROOKSHANK by Dorothy Hatswell

Edgar March Crookshank, (2 October 1858 – 1 July 1928), was an eminent English physician and microbiologist. He was born in Boulogne as his parents, Chichester Graham and Helen Crookshank, were part of a fairly large English colony based in the French town. Chichester Graham was a captain of the 51st Regiment of the Foot. Their four children were born in Boulogne. The eldest, also Chichester Graham, was baptised in 1852, the next, Frederick Willis, in 1854. Their only daughter, Edith Mary was baptised in 1856 and the youngest, Edgar March, in 1859. Chichester Graham’s grandfather had been a plantation owner in the town of St George, Grenada. He appears on the Slave Registers in the 1820’s. It is unclear why the family eventually moved to Boulogne, possibly there was an English garrison there as they seem to have connections with the military. The connection with France went back to the previous generation too. Records show the Crookshanks were certainly spread over the globe. They were in the army and probably the diplomatic corps. Edgar March, however, went to England to study medicine at King’s College in London. While there, he lodged with a family in Hampstead. After he qualified, he worked for a time with Joseph Lister, who had pioneered the use of carbolic acid as a disinfectant in the early 1850s. In 1882 he went to Egypt and was awarded the Khedive Star for his services. He also travelled widely in Europe. Edgar March married Harriet Colfox in Bridport, Dorset in 1885. They went on to have five children, Chichester C. and Helen A., both born in Madras, India; Margaret, Evelyn and Rosalind were all born in England.

By 1885 he was a professor of bacteriology and microbiology and established the first bacteriological laboratory at Kings College Hospital. He developed the use of photography in the study of bacteria. He disagreed with Dr. Edward Jenner’s theory that smallpox could be avoided by vaccination with cowpox. Crookshank was adamant that the two diseases were unrelated. This, in the face of the evidence that the vaccination programme started by Jenner with the support of Parliament had been running successfully for nearly a century. He was also very interested in diseases in animals. And supported the national campaign to eradicate tuberculosis in cattle as they were infecting people, once their meat had entered the food chain. He was appointed Vice President of the Royal Veterinary College and became a very well respected authority on matters relating to the treatment of both humans and animals. His portrait, painted some years after his death, hangs in the Royal Veterinary College in London. He moved to Saint Hill Manor in 1889 and increased the size of the house by adding two wings on either side of the original building. In the 1901 census his household consisted of himself and his wife and his

three youngest chidren. The three girls were looked after by a governess. There was a butler, a cook, three housemaids and a lady’s maid for Harriet. At the lodge lived Locke, the gardener with his family. Interestingly, he himself was born in Bridport, Dorset which was where Harriet Crookshank was also born. Ten years later only Edgar and Harriet were still living at Saint Hill Manor with Evelyn. Their household consisted of eight servants. The Lockes were still in Upper Lodge and Wilfred Funnell and his wife and two small daughters were in the other lodge. He soon became interested in local matters. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace and stood as Unionist and Tariff Reformer candidate for Parliament in 1906 when he was defeated by Charles Corbett. Four years later he donated a new west door to St. Swithuns Church. When he died in 1928 he left £73,000. His death is commemorated on a brass tablet on the wall of St Swithuns church. His widow, Harriet, survived him by four years and her estate was valued at £86,000.

It too prevents the formation of scar tissue and speeds up healing of wounds 3 times as quickly. It has been used for both depression and respiratory infections and produced a mark decrease in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and winter flus and colds. It is a diuretic, has a soothing effect on smooth muscle cramp and has been shown to reduce nerve pain. It has to be used with caution as in some patients, with continued use, it can cause photosensitivity and increase the risk of sunburn. Therefore as a precaution one should not use sunbeds, UV lamps or spend exposed periods in direct sunlight while on a course of this herb. It was with great excitement that a friend of mine many years ago guided me through some woods to a clearing to show me where the St John’s Wort grew. “East Grinstead is renowned for this plant”, she eagerly pointed out to me, “It grows really well here”. I am not sure if this is 100% true or not but I do seem to find it in abundance especially at this time of the year. St John’s Wort has a long and varied use in herbal medicine which dates back at least 2000 years but is suspected to be even longer. The first historical records of its use, is in the writings of Euryphon, a Greek physician who was practising about 288 B.C. It belongs to the flowering plant family of Hypericaceae and in fact the Latin name for this plant starts with Hypericum, which comes from the Greek word ”to protect”. The word is thought to be derived from “yper” meaning upper and “eikon” meaning an image. Thus meaning a heavenly image or spirit that watches over human beings. The common name of St John’s Wort has its roots in Christianity and this is thought to be due to the small pinprick holes in the leaves that bleed red when the hypericin (an active compound) content is at is highest. Some believing this is the sign of the stigmata, St John watches over Christian followers to protect them from harmful influence. And thus the plant in both Latin and by its common name means to protect.

The antiviral properties of this plant are of such strength that studies are being carried out for its potential use in HIV & AIDS treatment where this would be of huge benefit. The plant itself, once established, almost seems to take over an area, forming great clumps. Some even classify this as an invasive species. It does however prove a habitat for local insects and small mammals and its flowers provide a source of nectar at the end of the nectar season for many of our pollinators. Permaculturists use this plant in designing eco-friendly gardens as it is a nitrogen fixer and is of benefit to most insects. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

It’s most famous use is for treating depression, and in fact its antidepressant effects have caused its usage in recent years to reach record levels. Spurring much debate in the media as to its effectiveness. Beyond the antidepressant actions, this plant contains two more properties, one of wound healing and the other of antiviral activity. Clinical trials have shown it 32 | September 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

EG10K, The Andy Ripley Memorial Race This year is the fifth running of the 10k and it is at 10am on 21st September, starting as before from Imberhorne Upper School. We are expecting to reach the race limit of 400 before the day, like last year. We are currently on course to achieve that, showing the popularity of the event. It is now a firm fixture in East Grinstead’s sporting calendar.

Once again, we are raising funds for ‘Prostate Cancer UK’ and ‘Wooden Spoon’. The race is subtitled ‘The Andy Ripley Memorial Race’, which is why we continue to support these charities. Last year we donated £1,500 to each of them from race proceeds. Of course many runners raise funds for other charities. As usual, we are grateful for the
