THIS YEAR marks the 50th anniversary of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited - a company which has risen to become the leading electrical contracting and lighting company in Barbados and the Caribbean. It was on April 18, 1961, that a young 23–year-old electrician, Everson R. Elcock, bade farewell to his employers at the then Manning and Company, where he worked for $20 per week, to establish his own business. Imbued with a mission, full of energy, courage and youthful enthusiasm, and backed by family and friends, he soon surrounded himself with competent individuals to build an electrical contracting company, which would bear his name. For the past 50 years, the company has been quietly placing its stamp on many, large Government, commercial and private buildings across Barbados and in various Caribbean countries such as St. Vincent, Montserrat and Guyana. Operating from a private residence in the early years of the company, Everson Elcock’s team gradually obtained larger premises as the workload increased, leading eventually to the acquisition of the spacious Bandstan Manor, the Garrison, and then the Manor Lodge complex at Lodge Hill, St Michael. Under Elcock’s astute leadership, the company has kept pace with the changing technological developments in the field. It has significantly expanded its portfolio to include electrical sales and lighting, and has taken giant steps to provide services for regional customers. Elcock started his enterprise with one employee and part-time electricians. Thanks to Leon Phillips, a building superintendent with the then Public Works Department, and Victor Jones, Elcock’s uncle, he found jobs around the island wiring houses and conducting maintenance at various police stations. His reputation for excellent work got him many recommendations and he therefore found it necessary to employ several other electricians. The rise of Everson Elcock and Company Limited is one of the epic stories of courage, hard work and dedication. It is a story in which a top class electrician forsook a comfortable job to launch out to build an enterprise which would be first-rate in the electrical contracting industry. In 50 years, Elcock has taken his business from a three-man operation to a

medium-sized company employing more than 250 persons at its peak and handling contracts in excess of $10 million. The company was incorporated under the Companies Act of 1910, as a limited liability company, thus changing its name from Everson R. Elcock and Company, to Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited on June 1, 1973. Having its genesis as a family business, Everson R. Elcock Company Limited has evolved not only to become a business with major family interest but managed and run by loyal employees. It has become diversified to the extent that it can be categorised as a Group – the full Group being — Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited, Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited, Everson R. Elcock Holdings Limited and Bandereco Holdings Limited, the parent company. Much of this success has been attributed to Elcock, who set the stage by offering quality service to his clients, securing vital referrals, which propelled the company’s growth in the 1960s. It was Elcock who established the ethos of the company which is centred on quality and efficiency. Long standing employees such as Melvin Toppin and Douglas Maynard have helped Elcock to propel the business. In addition, the rise of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited from the position of a small electrical wiring operation to a respected medium-sized family business, managed by blacks, refutes the long-held myth that black Barbadian entrepreneurs cannot create and sustain their enterprises over the long run. Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited has also contributed significantly to the island’s foreign exchange earnings as a result of its overseas projects in Guyana, St. Vincent and Montserrat. Moreover, its work in lighting designs and electrical installations is important in improving the aesthetics of the country’s buildings, giving them a modern, sophisticated look. Over the years, Everson R. Elcock and Company
Limited has set and maintained high standards in an industry in which safety is of paramount importance. In 2002, Elcock stepped
down as managing director, but remained as the company’s Chairman. He passed the baton to his eldest son, Antonio, who is now managing director. His other son, Adrian, is director of finance, sales and marketing
of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited, and managing director of Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited. Today, the company has a direct staff compliment of approximately 80 persons and
is housed on the company’s estate at Manor Lodge, St Michael. With 50 years’ service to Barbados, Everson R. Elcock is now poised to continue to shine in the electrical contracting industry.

MAY 1, 2011 | SUNDAY SUN SPECIAL | 3 MESSAGE by Everson R. Elcock, BCH,JP, chairman of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited MY INITIAL IDEA has not failed, so here I am with the grace of God giving thanks for not only giving me the health, strength, wisdom and guidance to fulfil my original idea of starting an electrical contracting company, but also growing from one company into a diverse organisation that has made a difference to the country Barbados that I love, and to the many families of the hundreds of men and women that have worked with me and played a significant role in our success over the last 50 years. In 1961, I was 23 years of age, full of energy, ambition, and a God-given skill of being an electrical tradesman. I didn’t know the word that is used so freely now – entrepreneur, however, I knew that I had the ability to establish my own business, based on the numerous requests from persons to carry out work for them. So, I guess you could say that was the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey! Fifty years hence, I have used the same common sense in running my business. I try to understand what I have to offer, and what is a fair and reasonable price that the customer would pay for that quality service and product. This simplicity of thought is consistent with who I am as a man. I believe in keeping and living my life simple and I try to encourage my staff and management team to do the same. No one cares how much you know if at the end of the day it does not translate into some value to them. The journey thus far has been rewarding; however, we had many moments when we thought we would have lost everything, and each time that we have found ourselves in a “hole”, it is the amazing character and strength of my family and my managers and staff that have dug deep with an indescribable resolve to ensure that we would rise like a phoenix. My wife Maureen and I have been incredibly blessed to have not one, but two sons who made the decision to join the business and helped to transition it from a family business to a business controlled by a family, but managed and run by loyal employees and associates in a number of diverse industries and activities. I have had no difficulty retiring from the day to day business and letting Antonio, Adrian, and my trusted loyal colleague and friend, Patricia Boyce, manage the business

acumen to make the right decisions on behalf of the organisation and the various stakeholders it serves. We never told our sons that they had to join the business. That was their decision. But we are glad they made the decision to come into the business and hopefully, will continue to play a significant role in the development of Barbados and possibly beyond, but more importantly, to provide opportunity, hope and sustenance to the men and women who work with us each day to chart our journey into the future. Maureen and I are proud of the type of men our sons have become and it is our quiet hope that in much the way that that we tried to raise them to be respectful of others and appreciative of God’s blessings, that they will do the same for our grandchildren, Justin and Sanaa. I take this opportunity to publicly express thanks to my loyal staff, business associates, friends, and the many customers who have supported Everson R. Elcock throughout the past 50 years, for their commitment and dedication. This company looks forward to serving you for many more years to come.
4 | SUNDAY SUN SPECIAL | MAY 1, 2011 WHILE HE MAY have visited the offices of his father — Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited — as a child, it was not until 1984, at age 17, that Antonio Elcock, who now sits in the managing director’s chair, started working (part-time) at the company. At that time he was still a student of Combermere School, and worked during the Summer months, primarily in the stock room. This opportunity to earn his own money came through the insistence of his mother, Maureen. “My sister Joy (now deceased); my brother, Adrian and I, had the same indoctrination,” Antonio disclosed. Working during the Summer months continued until 1986 when Antonio left Barbados for the University of South Florida in the United States, to study electrical engineering. Even during this time, he never envisaged that one day he would sit at the helm of the family-owned business as managing director. “I did not envisage myself heading the company. I guess when one is intimately involved in a process the evolution of that process can elude you. It’s like watching your children grow up,” he says with a smile. Antonio remembers well that while at university, his dad would have him (and his siblings) flown home each Summer, not just to work in the company, but to keep in contact with their friends. He now states: “This has stood me well throughout the years. The same friends we all had during high school and maintained throughout our university years, are the same friends we have today. Most of them have now risen up the ranks in their own professions and at times, we do business together.” Antonio has also recognised that his father’s main goal for him, his brother, and his sister, was to provide them with a good, sound education — something he himself did not have. “After that, it was left up to us after to do what we chose,” Antonio stresses. His plan after completing his formal education was to apply for work as a draughtsman in the United States, or in Barbados — whichever came first. However,

Once tourism fell, so too did construction; this has caused a domino effect, where all the industries associated with construction have witnessed decreases in their businesses.” In retrospect, he pays homage to his father for his vision and foresight. “I must say this about him; he is always ready and willing to give you an opportunity — despite who you are or what level of the operations you are at. This is the nature of this man,” Antonio concludes.

LIKE HIS ELDER brother Antonio, Adrian Elcock’s introduction to the world of work was spending his Summer holidays working in his father, Everson R. Elcock’s business. He was a mere 13-year- old, whose love for figures was keenly recognised by his parents. It was not surprising therefore, that he would drive around with his dad selling electrical switches, plugs, conduits and the like. He smiles as he recalls: “I would have the price list in hand, as dad spoke to his prospective buyers.” Adrian worked in the company performing “cashier” duties and other “odd jobs” throughout his years at The Lodge School. In 1988, when he enrolled at Pace University, New York, to study for a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, (with a major in accounting), he returned home each year, to take his place in the family-owned business. Adrian, who holds the posts of director of finance, sales and marketing at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited and managing director of Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited, performs similar roles for the Everson R. Elcock Group of Companies. He admits to always being “somewhat of a businessman.” While at university, he would purchase items overseas, and sell them on his return home. He also worked as a tutor in the university’s Academic Study Centre, for $5 an hour, and was also a resident assistant in the dorms, thus helping to pay his way through school, even though this was not necessary. While at university he met Ann Wallace, the woman who would later become his wife. Both were interns with American Express in the Corporate Accounts Section, during their junior years in 1991. In 1992, during his senior year, he received a job offer from Arthur Anderson LLP, one of the United States’ leading accounting firms at the time. He had not yet graduated, but was busy as president of the National Association of Black Accountants-Pace University’s Chapter, and its Caribbean Students’ Association. Adrian heeded the advice of his dad, and made all his mistakes in the Financial Services Department of Arthur Anderson before deciding to return home after almost eight years in the United States. He left Arthur Anderson as senior accountant, armed with the experience of having worked with large and small clients, including servicing clients as far afield as the Cayman Islands. His decision to return home in 1995 was at the insistence of his dad. “My dad called me in 1994, and told me to stop wasting time. He said there was a project he wanted me to undertake, which turned out to be plans to open Exclusive Lighting,” Adrian recalls. After working in the Accounts Department for a short period, Adrian decided to take Exclusive Lighting under his wings. “I decided to run with this company, together with Ann Franklyn and Darnley Batson. I used all the marketing ideas I had,” states Adrian, who was a founding member of the Barbados Society of Marketing Professionals, “in my aim to make it successful.” “I learned a lot in those days from persons like Greg Hoyos, Dianne Inniss, and Shireen Eno; that’s how my marketing skills were honed,” he admits. Within three years, Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited began to show profitability, and within five years it was able to stand on its own. Adrian was also the person responsible for creating a business plan to move the company forward to a new environment. “In June 1999, we moved to Manor Lodge, where we merged our Electrical Division at the Garrison with our Lighting Division, which was located at Welches Plaza. We became landlords and set out to develop Manor Lodge. “I always loved projects, so moving from the Garrison to where we are now was a thrill to me. When we purchased the compound it was the most amount of money we had ever invested in a property. I created the financial model to support the acquisition to build up the development through a series of phases. We never used realty firms to rent the compound and therefore saved a lot of money in the process,” informs Adrian. Today, he is responsible for all sales and marketing, as well as the financial oversight of the entire Group of companies, which include Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited; Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited; Bandereco Holdings Limited, Everson R. Elcock Holdings Limited, and a few other private family companies. According to Adrian, “The Group has the potential and
ability to do greater things.” “I have the mindset that we have the ability to do much more. I will work with the managing director (Antonio Elcock), to keep the companies within the Everson R. Elcock Group successful,” says Adrian. “I’m always looking at new ways to invest and grow the company, and we do this as a team. We have made a transition from being a family-owned business to being a company that is run by a family, and we do have a plan in place to take the business forward,” he affirms. He adds: “Antonio and I have succeeded our dad and we are charting our own course. Our interests therefore may not always be in electrical contracting. We have grown to the point where we can invest in different areas, and the future strategy has been to focus on the establishment of a property development company,” says. He also stressed that his nephew Justin, and daughter, Sanaa, are already being exposed to the business and it is his hope that they will join the business some day. “Our vision is to continue on the platform my dad has built and to look at areas of business investments to determine whether we can participate in those investments,” Adrian explains. He disclosed that from an electrical viewpoint, the directors will explore new energy saving technology which will be beneficial to clients, and Antonio will focus on training his team

for such an eventuality. In addition, emphasis will be placed on increasing the number of suppliers as well as maintaining current supplier relations, to ensure the company continues to position itself as a leader in the electrical contracting industry. Adrian, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Barbados Tourism Authority, also notes that “Everson R. Elcock Holdings is constantly looking for real estate investment”. “We as a team believe that there are synergies, which can benefit all the companies in our Group if we are to expand and develop our property development business,” he stresses.

IN AUGUST of 1972, a young girl by the name of Patricia Bennett (now Boyce) entered the offices of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited to take up the post of clerk typist. Soon, thereafter, she was promoted to the position of accounts clerk, secretary and later executive secretary to the managing director. Boyce had only years earlier left fifth form of the Federal High School and Duff’s Business School, where she gained her secretarial qualifications. She had also spent two-and-a-half years with Standard Distributors, before applying to Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. “I was one of the youngest girls at The Federal High School, and when the other girls began looking for work, I decided to do so also. I worked for Standard Distributors for a short while as a clerk, then
applied at Everson R. Elcock after seeing an advertisement for a clerk typist. I remembered being interviewed by a Hallam Price, who was the auditor at the time, and I got the job,” Boyce recalled. Affectionately known as ‘Pat’, Boyce’s name has become synonymous with this company over the years.Today, she holds the post of director of administration and corporate secretary. In the early years, Boyce’s job entailed the performing of clerical, accounting and secretarial duties, as well as the costing of all goods. Her services resulted in the smooth running of the relatively then young company, complementing the excellent work of the company’s electricians. It was within four years of joining the company, (in 1976), that she was made a director and shareholder. This was partly due to her

Elcock Group of Companies, has also held various other posts over the years, including those of administrative manager and general manger. Her climb up the corporate ladder has been steady, and as the annals of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited are being written, her name can be found
throughout each story line. She has played a pivotal role in the company’s development, and founder Everson Elcock has referred to her as a hardworking woman, and one of the builders of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Her attention to detail, her organisational skills and passion for corporate development were instrumental in the company’s maturity. An unselfish and unassuming Boyce simply
states: “I do any job at hand with the best of my ability, and I make it a point not to praise myself for anything I undertake. I believe an individual can accomplish any task at hand as long as he or she has the faith to believe that they can do it.” Boyce also sees herself as part of the extended Elcock clan, and because of this view, giving 100 per cent to the company, comes naturally. “I’ve come a long way with Mr. Elcock. I am part of the team, and I’m always willing
to share my knowledge or do whatever has to be done to get the job done. When Mr. Elcock’s sons [Antonio and Adrian] came on board, it was like sharing knowledge with my own children,” she adds. Other than providing her with income and helping her to progress through life, Boyce credits her years with Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited for making a great contribution to her personal development as a woman, and her ability to have assisted her husband Andrew, in the educational development of their children, Tricia and Andre. “I feel proud to be part of this company’s growth and success and to have travelled on the journey with Mr. Elcock for the past 39 years. He has kept us together as a family, and I would like to thank God, Mr. Elcock, our customers, clients, staff and associates for helping us make it this far on our journey.” Boyce notes. In addition to seeing after the smooth operation of each department on a daily basis, Boyce is responsible for the administrative, purchasing and human resources departmetns.

(GP)
THE HISTORY of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited could not be written without giving a great measure of honour to Melvin Toppin. Toppin, who currently holds the post of operations manager and is a director and shareholder of the company, was a mere 19year-old electrician when he started working with Everson R. Elcock back in 1964. And, for the past 47 years, he has been an ardent supporter of Elcock, whom he said gave him an opportunity to serve the company with distinction. Toppin recalled that during the period 1964 and 1970, he and work mate, Douglas Maynard, who has also spent 47 years with the company, helped Elcock to lay the foundation for the expansion of the business. They travelled with Elcock in his small Volkswagon installing television antennae, and carrying out electrical and maintenance work on private homes and businesses. Toppin, who was taught the electrical trade by a Mr. Knight, who at that time was training people to work with the Barbados Light and Power Company Limited, remembers that his first job as an apprentice electrician was at the Globe Cinema. He also recalled the days of working for Manning, and completing work at Bresmay and Sandridge hotels. “We did not have an office back then – no place to call home. We would meet Mr. Elcock at Manning, Pierhead, and go on the road to do jobs. The first office some time later was at Fontabelle,” Toppin recalled. One project, which stand out in Toppin’s mind, was providing the lighting at Manning, Pierhead, for Barbados’ first Independence celebration in 1966. The company was
responsible for installing 600 coloured lights. This contract has been placed on record as Elcock’s first major project in the early days. Toppin also vividly recalled working with Victor Jones, - Elcock’s uncle, and other building contractors, who secured many electrical installation contracts for the young business. It was not long after joining the company that Toppin went on to become a charge hand; foreman, and a supervisor. He was made a director of the company in 1973, and promoted to the position of operations manager, more than 15 years ago. Toppin is quick to point out that he remained with Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited throughout the years, because of his boss’ kindness. “When I came to work with Mr. Elcock, he would make sure I got paid, even if he himself did not. I had the opportunity to work elsewhere, but I stuck with him. When you have a boss who looks out for your welfare and those of others, you remain loyal to him,” stressed Toppin. The father of three says he is extremely proud of the company’s growth and success over the years, and hopes that those who come after him will take the company into a further 50 years. He thanks God for bringing him this far; Elcock for allowing him to serve, and the company’s clients for their support. Toppin, who will soon retire, is responsible for seeing after all electrical wiring and installations and for providing estimates for residences and commercial businesses. He manages a team of over 45 electricians,

MANAGING DIRECTOR Antonio Elcock was the key individual who worked feverishly overseeing overseas contracts for Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited back in the early 1990’s. It was, however, in the late 1980’s that the company successfully completed its first overseas project in St Vincent. With declining business in Barbados, the objective was to go after regional contracts, through a tendering process. In 1991, Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited was awarded its second contract in St Vincent – the Kingstown Police Station. A place was found to house the staff and a small office was set up as a contract centre between St Vincent and Bandstan Manor – the then headquarters of Everson. R. Elcock and Company Limited. The company also used this base to carry out work on the Immigration Department in St Vincent. The company also won the contract to install the electrics at the Montserrat Government Headquarters, and chose two senior technicians Andrew Forde and Courtenay Bannister, the project’s foremen, to spearhead this project. Expansion continued as the company entered the South American mainland of Guyana in 1992, where it opened a local office and conducted electrical installations at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; DDL Duty Free Shop, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry GBTI, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, (1996) and many other projects. During these projects, founder Everson Elcock worked closely with Nehaul Construction of Barbados, which had established a registered office in Guyana. The Guyana projects were not easy to execute. Everson R. Elcock’s team, supervised by Edwin Beckles, with Pierson Codrington as foreman, spent six months trying to find suitable accommodation and workmen who produced a high standard of work. These projects in addition to others, having been successfully completed made Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited, a truly Caribbean entity – and advertised the company as “a provider of quality electrical contracting and design services in Barbados, Guyana and the Eastern Caribbean.” Thus in the early 1990’s Elcock saw his business as a regional enterprise. There was good reason to do so, as financial rewards were great, making the year 1993-1994, “one of the most successful years of the company.”

SHE ALWAYS WANTED TO become a secretary, and fresh out of the Barbados Community College, Roslyn McClean sent a job application letter to Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Her application was successful, and she took up the post of filing clerk with the company in 1994. Within months, she became secretary to the then General Manager, Patricia Boyce and the then Senior Projects Manager, Antonio Elcock. In January 1995, she was appointed secretary to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Everson Elcock. When Elcock took up the duties of chairman, she remained his secretary, as well as secretary to Managing Director, Antonio Elcock. She is also the company’s contracts administrative officer, and recording secretary to the board of directors.
McClean, who sees herself as a team player, is often kept busy attending various top level meetings, taking evaluations for electrical installations, and seeing after secretarial and administrative correspondence. She confesses that her knowledge of working with computers had its genesis at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. “This job has helped me to grow more academically,” the former St. George Secondary School student stressed, “and I’ll like to thank God for bringing me this far in my field, and Mr.

UNASSUMING, dedicated and committed are words, which aptly describe Denise Moore, purchasing officer at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Moore has given 37 years of service to this company, and is proud of its many achievements. She says: “It’s been a joy working at Everson R. Elcock. We work as a team – as a family. I feel a sense of pride when I look back over the years and see how much the company has grown; even to the point of becoming land lords. “It’s great to see a black-owned company come this far and I hope to see it grow from strength to strength.” A graduate of the Modern High School, Moore left that learning institution and landed her first job as a storeroom clerk at this electrical contracting firm. At that time the company’s offices were located at Constitution Road. She was promoted to her current role just over ten years ago, and is now responsible for ordering all materials from local and overseas vendors for contract jobs in the Contracts Department, as well as handling and clearing items from the port.

FORMER ACCOUNTS clerk Mishael Forde, now holds the post of warehouse supervisor at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Twelve years since joining the Everson R. Elcock team in 1999, Forde says he has witnessed steady growth and is pleased with the company’s progress. “There have been lots of diversity and expansion, and it is interesting that one can witness this type of growth within a blackowned company – a company which can compete with others in the electrical field,” he states. Forde supervises a small team of porters and one truck driver, and receives all stock from local and overseas’ suppliers. He in turn distributes the stock to Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited and at various sites where electrical installation work is being carried out. He is a former Lodge School student, and previously worked with the Ministry of Education; Caricargo and the Barbados National Oil Company Limited.

ANOTHER LONG STANDING employee of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited is Hallam Pitt. He made his entry into the company in June 1973, at the tender age of 20, straight out of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. He was an apprentice electrician at the time, but was keen on learning and serving. It was no surprise therefore, when within months he was promoted to the position of charge hand, and later became a foreman. In 1989, he was elevated to the post of supervisor and ten years ago was made senior supervisor, engineering and contracts. “I got promoted over the years based on my standard of work. I’ve been in the electrical field for 38 years, and I’ve spent all 38 years with Everson Elcock,” Pitt proudly informs. As he looks back on the past, he remembers that in the early years there was lots of work to do, and the company completed work “all over the country.” “We covered the entire island, although I worked primarily in the ’Town and Christ Church areas. We’ve always had skilled electricians, but without the foremen and charge hands, the company would not have grown,” he notes. Some of the major projects Pitt recalls working on in the early years were Bresmay Hotel, Barbados Community College; the Frank Collymore Hall, home of The Central Bank; Caribbean Development Bank; Chefette, Harbour Road, and United Insurance. He has also supervised electrical installations at Chefette, Warrens; Warrens Motors; Harrison Cave, Royal Bank, Broad Street; The Treasury Building; Trident Insurance and Barbados National Bank, Lower Broad Street.
GLENVILLE DAVIS has spent 32 years with Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. He was an apprentice electrician fresh out of Princess Margaret Secondary School when he joined the company in 1979, and has worked his way through the ranks to become supervisor, Contracts Department. After electrical contracts are secured, Davis and his team carry out the actual electrical installations for residential and commercial properties. Davis said the former Sherbourne Conference Centre was one of the most challenging jobs he has done, since the work had to be completed in a short period. “We spent long hours working overnight, and at that time I was foreman,” he said. He also remembers the challenges faced while working on the then Julie ’N Supermarket and Hilton Barbados. Davis ensures that all the needed materials are on site within the specified times, and that all electrical installations are properly completed. About his years spent with OPERATIONS MANAGER MELVIN TOPPIN (seated) with supervisors (from left) Hallam Pitt, the company, he said: “I’ve Glenville Davis and Edwin Beckles. (GP) enjoyed it all. EDWIN BECKLES will go down in history as the man who was charged with supervising teams of workmen in Guyana when Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited undertook the contracts to provide electrical installations at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital and DDL Duty Free Shop in Kitty, Guyana in 1992, and the Cheddi Jagan Airport in Timehri, in 1996. These projects were successfully completed, in the face of many challenges. For Beckles, it was an opportunity to prove to all and sundry that Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited was no small player in the electrical installation field. Beckles became a team player of this electrical contracting firm 35 years ago, fresh out of the Garrison Secondary School. He swiftly moved up the ranks, holding such posts as A Class workman; charge hand; foreman; supervisor and senior supervisor in the contracts department. He is responsible for overseeing various electrical projects and looking after the electrical maintenance of properties at Manor Lodge and Welches Plaza, both businesses owned by the
Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited group. In addition, Beckles supervises a team of 15 electricians. Among those projects which he has supervised, are Manulife, Barbados National Bank, Broad Street; Royal Westmoreland; Sugar Hill and All Saints School. Beckles believes the growth of the
company over the years has been due to Everson Elcock’s vision and foresight. According to him, “The growth has been recognised throughout the years. For instance, we were not always computerised, but we give credit to Mr. Elcock for his foresight in helping the business to grow and to adapt to changes, even in the area of new technology.”

LIONEL WALCOTT’s entry into Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited more than 30 years ago was at a time when the company was still using stock cards. Today, the firm is fully computerised and Walcott is pleased with the ease provided by the new technology, to easily source items by just “going online.” “It’s so easy to answer customers’ queries within a day, and have orders fulfilled as long as the manufacturers have them in stock,” he says. Walcott has risen from sales clerk to become sales manager at Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies Limited – a position he has held for the past 12 years. While he makes sure there is adequate stock and manages the sales team, cashiers and the electrician assigned to the Sales floor, he also liaises with the purchasing officer when it comes to ordering stock for Exclusive Lighting. His aim is to ensure that Exclusive Lighting remains the No.1 lighting and electrical supplies store in
Barbados, and that it stays on the cutting edge of technology. He lauds the staff for their dedication and commitment, and also acknowleges that Everson Elcock has played a great role as a “good boss”. “My chairman has a good understanding of his staff and I have a good understanding of him. I have a good working relationship with him, the other managers and all staff, and because of this, we can move forward confidently. “We have mutual respect for each other, and work as a team,” adds Walcott, who is referred to by colleagues and clients as “Wally.” He believes that as a qualified electrician, he is in a good position to serve clients who visit Exclusive Lighting, and answer the many queries often fielded. He laughs as he says: “When people come into the store they are always told to ‘ask Wally’. Over the years I’ve been able to develop a good rapport with our customers, and this makes me very happy.”

NEW TECHNOLOGY in lighting is a subject which excites Dwayne Walton, assistant sales manager at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Walton is usually found in the showroom of Exclusive Lighting, a sister company to Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited, or at the homes and offices of clients, seeking to ensure that requests for various lighting services are appropriate to the clients’ needs. With the sales entity being
a crucial component of the company’s overall services, Walton knows that keeping abreast of modern lighting changes and energy saving products are vital to the provision of excellent service. To this end, he regularly attends overseas lighting and electrical shows and seminar as a means of keeping up- to date with global changes in the electrical field. “We specialise in special electrical projects such as home and office automation
lighting systems, and modern lighting innovations, especially as they relate to security. Knowing what the client wants is important if we are to meet their expectations. “Customers can therefore come in and have the lighting concepts in their homes, businesses or landscapes personalised. Many of the modern day architects request special lighting concepts, and we aim to meet the demands in the market place,” Walton stressed. Walton, who joined
Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited as a sales representative in 1997, loves the fact that there is a whole science behind how light is produced. He also enjoys interfacing with customers, and meeting new people every day. Educated at The Lodge School and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, Walton, who was appointed assistant sales manager last year, assists the sales manager, Lionel Walcott in his duties.

COMPANY FOUNDER AND Chairman, Everson R. Elcock prepares to cut the golden anniversary cake with his wife Maureen, during the company’s 50th anniversary staff awards and dinner, which was held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Centre. Managing Director, Antonio Elcock, addressed staff and specially invited guests during the ceremony. In the background are directors of the company. (GP)
THE STAFF of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited must be commended for their loyalty and dedication to the company, said Managing Director, Antonio Elcock, as the electrical contracting firm celebrates its 50th anniversary. In a recent interview, Elcock referred to the staff as “tenured individuals” many of whom have been with the company for many years. “Our staff turn-over is very low and each staff member is committed to the company. I would like to publicly acknowledge my appreciation to them,” Elcock said. He added that 80 per cent of the staff “are technical staff”, and although they could ply their trades elsewhere, many remain loyal to the company, even working on their off days, or labouring over time to complete various projects. “The level of support and respect my father [Everson R. Elcock] has had from staff have continued even after the transition [where he is now, Chairman] and for that I am grateful,” Elcock disclosed. He added: “They continue to exact all the same benefits, and we try to follow the social partnership agreements as best as we can in terms of benefits and remuneration to each staff member.”
ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING must be allowed to undergo its natural evolution of having direct contracts with customers. Furthermore, electricians must be seen as highly skilled, professional people, not ones with back packs of tools who simply call themselves electricians. These are the views of Managing Director of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited, Antonio Elcock. According to him: “If there is a player in the construction industry who has to be retrained because of technological changes, it is the electrical contractor. And, the electrical field is the only field within the construction package, which requires certification upon completion.” Speaking as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary, Elcock said the electrician must be given his rightful place in the industry. “Having been involved in Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited Company Limited officially for the past 21 years, and unofficially for the past 27 years, I have seen the changes in the electrical contracting industry where electrical contracts in some instances out-strip most other contracts because of the demand for newer technology. The electrician is the first and last person on the project. His role is key, ” Elcock stressed. He added that one of the company’s strategies going forward would be to revise its business model in the near future, where the mix of jobs undertaken by the company, would see some measure of change. “We will probably end up undertaking a mix of personal developments, private sector work and government contracts in the reverse of how they are presently done,” he stressed.

Elcock and Company Limited in March this year, Douglas Maynard’s name is listed in the company’s history, having spent 47 years with the Elcock team. It was in 1964, that Maynard, then a 19-year-old apprentice electrician, was hired by Elcock upon a recommendation by Maurice Parris, who at that time was an electrical engineer with the Ministry of Transport and Works. Both Maynard and Melvin Toppin, who is now operations manager, a director and shareholder of the company, helped Elcock to build his company from the ground up, travelling around with him in his Volkswagen and performing various electrical jobs across the length and breadth of Barbados. A former gardener, Maynard recalls that his first project with Elcock was that of carrying out electrical work at

“I WOULD FEEL LIKE a fish out of water if I had to adapt to working elsewhere.” Those are the words of Norman Garnes, supervisor, Maintenance Services at Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited. Like a number of his workmates, Garnes, who joined the company in 1971, was hired as an apprentice electrician. It was his first job after leaving Presentation College, and he remembers his first project was that of rewiring Manning, Pierhead. He also recalls that he completed this contract with the assistance of Douglas Maynard, who joined the company in 1964. Garnes went on in those early years to complete work at the Caribbean Development Bank; Chefette, Fontabelle (in 1972); Ilaro Court, and Barbados Shipping and Trading (BST), where he worked as a foreman. EVERSON R. ELCOCK and Company Limited has the potential and ability to do greater things. So says Adrian Elcock director of finance, sales and marketing of Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited and managing director of Exclusive Lighting and Electrical Supplies. “I have the mind-set that we have the ability to do much more. I will work with the managing director [Antonio Elcock], to keep the companies within the Everson R. Elcock group successful,” says Adrian, who sees after the finances of the entire group. We have grown to the point where we can invest in different areas, and the future strategy has been to focus on the establishment of a new type of company, which is focused on direct contracts as well as one that fully embraces the new technologies as it
relates to energy efficiencies” he revealed, as he stressed that the younger generation – his nephew Justin, and daughter, Sanaa, are already being exposed to the business. “Our vision is to continue on the platform my dad has built and to look at areas of business investments to determine whether we can participate in those investments,” Adrian explains. He disclosed that from an electrical viewpoint, the directors will explore new energy saving technology which will be beneficial to clients, and Antonio will focus on training his team for such an eventuality. In addition, emphasis will be placed on increasing the number of suppliers as well as maintaining current supplier relations, to ensure the company continues to position itself as a leader in the electrical contracting industry. Adrian, who was recently appointed chairman of the Barbados Tourism Authority, also notes that the sister company “Everson R. Elcock Holdings is constantly looking for real estate investments since we as a team believe that there are synergies, which can benefit all the companies in our Group if we are to expand and develop our property development business”.

FROM INCEPTION, Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited was set to make a significant contribution to Barbados’ economy and the lives of many. Since the start of this fledgling company from the top floor of Mannings, Pierhead, (Mr Elcock’s) first place of employment), between 1961-1964, it has left indelible impressions in the minds of many. From around 1964, the company started to take on major jobs, other than the many residences and small companies for which electrical contracting work was completed. In 1966, on the occasion of Barbados’ attainment of Independence, Elcock was called on to install 600 coloured decorative lights at Mannings, Pierhead. This was his first major contract. Hundreds of projects have been undertaken by the company over the years — both local and overseas. In manufacturing, Everson R. Elcock and Company Limited did much work for the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), particularly at the Spring Garden Development Park where heavy electrical machinery had to be installed. During the 1980s, it carried out maintenance to industrial laundries and designed electrical installation for several industries such as Haas Precision Limited and Rainbow Paper Products.
