INNOTECH SERVICES LTD ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
20 years of construction to a fine art
INNOTECH SERVICES LTD is a successful, privately owned construction company, founded by the Da Silva family, operating in Barbados and the Caribbean region, providing a full range of construction services. The company started operations in 1992 providing ancillary services to the construction industry and by 1994 commenced full construction services. At that time the local market was dominated by large foreign building contractors and most of the local building contractors were restricted to residential and smaller commercial and industrial projects. In its early days, the company had a complement of 15 employees, three of whom were directors, and the first construction project it commenced was a residential house. The initial challenges encountered back then, typical with any fledgling company, involved trying to find the balance between managing its finances, recruiting competent staff, organising its activities and being able to establish consistent standards. In those early days, the directors had to be hands on and were intimately involved in every aspect of the business in order to ensure the company’s success. Instinctively, they structured the company so that every director had ownership of an area of responsibility which ensured that overlap and repetition was minimized. After successfully completing several residential projects in its formative years and surmounting the technical learning curve, the company was eager to undertake its first commercial project and aggressively set out to secure its first award via the INNOTECH SERVICES LTD head office located in Warrens, St Michael. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2012. INNOTECH SERVICES LTD ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
Exciting future ahead AT INNOTECH SERVICES LTD, we have much to celebrate in reaching this 20th Anniversary milestone. When I look back over the preceeding 20 years I am reminded of the many faces of staff, clients, sub-contractors, suppliers, friends, advisors and well wishers who have all contributed in their own individual and unique way to help create the truly dynamic and energetic construction company we are today. When I formed Innotech in 1992, it was a particularly difficult economic time in Barbados and recently, I have pondered on the coincidence that some 20 years later Barbados and most of the rest of the world continue to struggle with depressed economic activity and its attendant rising unemployment and underemployment. The company has grown substantially over the years and continues to grow and expand, yet it still prides itself on its unshakeable core values supported by years of experience in the construction and property development markets in Barbados and the region. With the
commitment to its core values, Innotech Services Ltd looks to the future notwithstanding the challenges present and evident on the horizon, as an opportunity to be taken firmly with both hands. The Innotech team will continue to develop themselves into a more professional organization in order to support the company’s commitment to always meet and exceed customer expectations. This we will do whether we are operating in Barbados, St Vincent & the Grenadines, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago or anywhere else in the Caribbean basin. The Innotech brand is easily recognizable as the symbol for excellence in the construction industry and the challenge for the future will be our ability to leverage that brand as we go in search of new projects in new markets. Even though I am confident that every member of the Innotech team has not forgotten that personal contact is as important today as it was in the beginning, we should remember that when we combine this with our strong brand
there are endless opportunities awaiting us. While we are committed to providing a stable and progressive environment for our valuable team members, we must recognize the role we play in the wider community, especially given the many benefits achieved by the industry during ‘the boom years’ of construction. We will work hand in hand with our private sector and public sector clients whenever we can to produce valuable, consistent and rewarding employment for the many skilled people who are the backbone of the construction industry across this region. The ‘hands-on’ approach taken by the directors, management and staff of Innotech Services Ltd is something that we are proud of and I encourage all of the individual members of our team to strive always for excellence as we look to the future. To all those people who have in one way or another been involved with our company over the past 20

INNOTECH SERVICES LTD ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
The growth of Innotech Message from the Chief Executive Officer – MARTIN A. DA SILVA INNOTECH SERVICES LTD. has always been a dynamic company and has executed many major projects in Barbados from the upgrade of the Bridgetown Port to the McEnearney car showroom. From the high rise condominium villa project at Ocean One to the new administration building for University of the West Indies (UWI), to name just a few. The company also performs quite a lot of work in the education sector with projects like the St Gabriel’s School, the new St Ambrose School and the new Ann Hill School. We are now in the process of completely upgrading The Lodge School. In 2002, we were employing about 200 people. Our business approach has always been different, we never think of business as just business, and while being profitable is important, our source of pride has always been found in and around the performance and achievements in our work and trust in our clients. For many of our clients, Innotech is not just a building contractor but is their builder of choice, and to maintain
that position, our team constantly has to be on the lookout for new and innovative ways to maintain our competitive edge with careful reviews of our performance. With this in mind, we grew our staff to approximately 250 people and our motto was formally changed to Construction To A Fine Art. In order to remain at the forefront of local industry, and also to advance into regional markets we enabled a new focus on health and safety and were the first local construction company to provide a structured health and safety department. Other changes would come in the form of software systems initiated by my brother, Tony. Such investments have been expensive, but the deliverables allow the company to become more performance oriented and to be even more competitive for larger projects in and around the Caribbean. By 2005, we realized a need to resource qualified project management staff locally, so in 2008 we engaged the UWI, Cave Hill Campus to consider initiating a professional construction degree programme offered in Barbados. By 2009, Innotech and UWI signed a memorandum of understanding
to sponsor the degree programme and in 2010 the programme was launched. The first cadre of students has recently completed the degree and the University continues to see significant interest in the programme. We are breaking ground and moving into new frontiers with the award of a PPP contract for the Barbados Water Authority’s new headquarters. The company currently employs about 350 people many of whom have been with the company through the years. Innotech is also actively involved in the community. We are proud of projects such as the Challenor School where we, along with a number of our loyal suppliers have completely refurbished the main building . Within the group of companies there are other services we offer such as property development services by Caribbean Lifestyles Ltd, quality joinery services by ABM Woodcraft. We are now in the process of launching Innotech Equipment, which will offer sales and rentals of renowned international brands plus, as an add-on, will provide helical screw piling for deep foundation solutions. On our 20th anniversary, I take

this opportunity to thank all of our committed staff who have been with us over the last two decades, and all those who have made a valuable contribution to our success. I also wish to thank our clients for the trust they have placed in us and continue to place in us.

Creating the structure for a successful organisation by KEVIN WILLIS, MANAGING DIRECTOR
THE STRUCTURE of any organisation needs to be based on a solid foundation. Not unlike a building, the more solid the foundation, the more solid the organisation will be as a whole. As business executives, we at Innotech Services Ltd, are very mindful of this fact. Organisations require structure in order to grow and be profitable. The ultimate structure of an organisation depends on the industry and markets in which it operates. However, there are common elements that are critical to the success of any organisation and incorporating these into your business structure and strategy will be instrumental in achieving success. Analyze market First, analyze and understand the market in which you operate. What are the barriers to entry and the rates of failure? What are the market conditions, what are the costs of doing business, including volatility of material costs? What are the margins of profit, who are your competition and what differentiates you from them? This information is essential to developing the right structure and
strategy. Develop strategy Access the organisation’s strengths and potential weaknesses and develop a coherent business strategy with goals and objectives that are aligned. Once defined, these established goals and objectives need to be drilled down thorough the subordinate branches to the individual level so that the constituent parts of the organisation are aligned to the direction of the business as a whole. We started this process within the company several years ago. Performance, accountability link Performance and accountability are fundamental elements and every employee within the organisation with responsibilities should have performance expectations with accountability for achieving those expectations. By linking the organisation’s goals and objectives to individual performance expectations and accountability, we have found our departments and employees, have become more aligned to the company’s business objectives as a whole which has contributed to our growth. Leadership and control Leadership, hierarchical structure and control are also important considerations.
Strong leadership and having the right people on your management team is key to building a successful organisation and achieving its growth potential. We understand that leadership is critical to properly guide and develop all aspects of a business and to ensure accountability to goals and objectives, in addition to resolving issues that arise. Recognising this fact, we have endeavoured within the company, to develop decisive leaders in each department, supported by strong core leaders. The hierarchical structure is also critical in establishing lines of authority, responsibility, communication and policies. Within the company, we have adapted a relatively flat structure to ensure that the levels of responsibility and subordination are clear, but excess levels are eliminated to ensure that decision making, coordination and responsiveness and speed of communication between management and employees is expedient. We are also aware that to achieve effective control, there needs to be a balanced mix of authority between an organisation’s core management and subordinate branches in order to realise goals and objectives, without which, growth becomes increasingly difficult.
KEVIN WILLIS MANAGING DIRECTOR (RC)
Competitive edge Positioning the business to gain and keep a competitive edge is another vital element which involves analyzing what your clients want and need, your competitor’s services and performance, understanding the market and where it’s heading, being adaptable to changing market conditions and staying abreast of industry and technological advancements. We have built our suite of services and performance standards around these dynamic elements and in so doing; we have created a strong and marketable brand. Manage risk and build financial stability Finally, an organisation needs to manage its risks and build financial

Strong focus on plant and equipment FROM THE VERY BEGINNING our company’s philosophy was one to mechanise as many areas of the construction process as possible, to become more effective and efficient. Over the years the business has had to invest heavily in all types of construction plant and equipment. During the early days we procured small tools and equipment specific to the particular job we were doing at the time, like demolition hammers, power planers and so on, but as our scope of work expanded, the need for larger pieces of equipment increased considerably. Today, besides power tools, we have invested in construction equipment of all descriptions, such as dump trucks, delivery trucks, excavators, bulldozers, cranes, skid steers, telehandlers, concrete mixers and the lists goes on. With this amount of plant and equipment, we realised a

need for monitoring their locations, transfers and any cost for maintenance, which led to the investment of our tool tracking software system which allows us to do just that. This system allows us to know where any piece of plant and equipment is located at any time. It also allows you to record any issues specific to a piece of equipment and details historical performance of it. The amount of equipment
also requires the need for an in-house maintenance department. So right from the very beginning we were looking after our maintenance needs. We have a fully trained and staffed maintenance workshop. But with any company the most important asset is its people. We are lucky to have some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable guys around. This has allowed us to look after most of our needs and is specifically geared to minimising the down time to our plant and equipment in order to maximize productivity on our sites. Recently, we have benefited from the opportunities of having Innotech Equipment Inc., a sister company which is the local
agents for several well respected construction equipment brands, such as Winget equipment, they are also the agents for Helical screw piling system which is a modern technology for deep foundation solution. Today, on our 20th anniversary, I would like to thank the guys in the maintenance department who have, and continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the company’s equipment remains serviceable. For the long hours, lost weekends and bank holidays spent away from family. These 20 years are a testament to your dedication and professionalism. Thank you Basil Da Silva Jnr

Keen eye kept on cost AS A QUANTITY SURVEYOR [often referred to as a cost manager], Alvan Richard Gordon works closely with Innotech’s directors and senior managers. He is a member of the team of professionals within the organisation ensuring that the company
successfully procures and completes projects within Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. He also identifies, tracks and pursues potential revenue earning projects in and outside of Barbados for the company. Gordon can be called
upon by potential clients as early as the design stages of a project to advise on budgets, costs, life cycle costs and cost comparisons on various elements of the project. His role as one of the company’s quantity surveyors is to manage all costs relating to civil
Success built on clear vision • From Page 5. stability. This element is probably the most critical and requires a great deal of focus and attention from the organisation’s core management. Every organisation is subject to risk, which can come in many forms, so being aware of potential risks and developing mechanisms to detect these risks early enough to avoid or mitigate their impact on the financial or operational performance of the business is essential. Building financial stability is exceedingly difficult in a challenging economic environment where a downturn in economic activity has resulted in very flat, if not nonexistent, profit margins. Being cognisant of this, we have become very focused on monitoring key financial performance indicators with a view to
protecting our margins. We have implemented cost controls, utilised effective procurement strategies, while maximising credit terms and diligently managing our cash flow, in an effort to ensure continuity. While there are many proven approaches an organisation can adapt and use to develop its business strategy, there is no secret formula or silver bullet to achieving success. Organisational success is built on a clear vision, determination, hard work, enthusiasm, teamwork and employing the right strategies suitable to your business. Success is a journey that involves taking calculated risks which may not materialise as expected and failure along the way is an almost eventuality, but adapting and learning from those failures affords an organisation the opportunity to get their strategy for achieving success right, which in the final analysis is the most rewarding outcome of the journey.
engineering or building projects during the tender stages of the project. These projects may include the construction of new buildings, renovations or maintenance work. Gordon also seeks to minimize the cost of the projects and enhance value for money, while ensuring that the project meets all legal and quality assurance requirements. His other functions include, preparing,
negotiating and analyzing costs for tenders and contracts; conducting feasibility studies; estimating materials, time and labour costs; forecasting cash flows; advising on procurement strategy; coordinating work efforts with regards to labour, materials and plant resources; preparing and agreeing on valuations with the client’s consultants; and preparing ALVAN RICHARD GORDON payments for subQUANTITY SURVEYOR (RC) contractors.

Driven to give 100% always HIS MAY BE a familiar face to many of Innotech’s clients, as Cecil Atherley performs the role of messenger. Atherley joined Innotech Services Limited over 15 years ago as a truck driver. His passion for driving led him to take on this former role as well as his current position in the company. On any given day, he can be found at various work sites and offices. This he enjoys immensely, as he loves meeting people and is proud to disclose that he knows every nook, cranny [and every alley] across the island. “I wanted to drive long before I started to go to school. I loved driving and purchased my first car when I was in my 20s. I have been driving ever since,” Atherley explained. An injury last year prevented him from driving the company’s flatbed trucks and helping to move around materials and equipment. However, when he took up the post of messenger in February of this year, Atherley was once again back in the driver’s seat, so to speak, although he had to settle this time around, for a smaller mode of transportation. This dedicated employee has grown with the company and admits that he would not want to work anywhere else. “I have enjoyed my years at Innotech and learned that no two days are ever the same. “The company has certainly expanded, and continues to take on many large projects as time goes by. Over the years we have learnt to adjust and to take the bitter with the sweet,” he added. Atherley has vowed to continue to give his best to this company of which he is so proud to be a part.
‘Best place I’ve ever worked’ AFTER SPENDING 18 years with Innotech Services Limited Andrew Browne is quite quick to point out: “It’s the best construction firm I’ve ever worked with and I do not have plans to go anywhere else.” Browne, who has spent the last 19 months in St Vincent and the Grenadines, ANDREW BROWNE was promoted to the FOREMAN (GP) post of foreman three years ago. He joined Innotech as a mason, but soon took over the responsibility of building swimming pools. In St Vincent he is continuing his job of preparing foundations/layouts and helping to manage a team of workers.

Thompson quite an all-rounder SHE CAN be described as an “all-rounder” or the “hands-on” individual who works both in the forefront and in the background to get the tasks at hand completed. Amanda Thompson has played many key roles since first joining Innotech Services Limited in 2000. She came on board as the company’s receptionist, but left one year later for Australia. On her return in 2004, she again worked as receptionist, before being promoted to sales and marketing assistant of Caribbean Lifestyle – the property development arm of Innotech. The sale of El Sol Sureno – 36 luxurious condominiums on Barbados Golf Course, Christ Church, over a two-year period was Thompson’s first big project. From there she worked on several housing developments including Kings Gates, Fairwind Lane and Southern Heights. Thompson is also responsible for the property management of Pyramid Investments Holdings Ltd, a company owned by some of the directors of Innotech. Her responsibilities are to oversee all rental collection, solicit new clients and see after all maintenance on various rental properties. She has been performing the dual roles of property manager for Pyramid Investments Holdings Ltd and personal assistant to Innotech’s founder and chairman Anthony DaSilva, for the past five years, both roles keeping her very busy. Amanda is a certified CBP executive with the International Business Training Association. She is also involved in the marketing team

of Innotech – a role she enjoys immensely. Thompson has taken note of the changing construction landscape in Barbados, recalling that just over a decade ago, Innotech concentrated largely on tourism-related projects. “We’ve now embarked on a wider variety of projects, including many educational projects in Barbados. Spreading our wings to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where we are also working on an educational project, is a plus for the company. The market has changed and so we in turn have changed. I think we will definitely spread our wings further and this is exciting for all of us,” Thompson disclosed. She believes that as the company puts its stamp on buildings in Barbados and the Caribbean, Innotech’s name will continue to be synonymous with quality construction.

A friend indeed to school in need THE CHALLENOR SCHOOL, which provides for severely handicapped children, was forced to close in 2009 due to severe environmental and dilapidation issues. Innotech Services Limited was invited to partner with the school, located in Canefield, St Thomas, and to offer corporate support and assistance to return the building to use. The refurbishment would prove challenging as the building had severe leaks and damage in the roof, upper floors and structural woodwork.
Innotech Services Limited began the works with the roof and from there stripped the existing kitchen, replaced doors, windows, timber floors, structural members and coordinated rewiring as needed. Many parts of the masonry also had to be repaired. With a team of six tradesmen, Innotech coordinated the upgrade of the building and approximately six months later the refurbishment project was successfully completed in time for students and teachers to return to the school.

Building on education INNOTECH Services Limited has placed its professional construction stamp on educational facilities across Barbados. It was through the insight of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Martin DaSilva, that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Innotech and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in 2009, to introduce a Master of Science degree in construction management. The degree programme commenced in 2010 and the first cadre of students are now in their final year. DaSilva explained:“During 2007 and into 2008, the company was being considered for larger projects and we needed professional, qualified project managers. It had become increasingly difficult to source local experienced professionals. Many times we were forced to expand our search beyond Barbados and the Caribbean region. “It dawned on me one day that we needed to initiate our human resources in the island to progress to the point where they would be able to compete for such positions. ”With the cooperation of Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Sir Hilary Beckles, and other members of staff at the UWI, deliberations began in 2008. In 2009, the two entities signed the MOU that would see the first professional construction degree being offered in Barbados. “We’ve had a great response from

(GP) various corporate entities, Government and also from within the region,” DaSilva disclosed. Innotech has sponsored the degree programme and management is eagerly anticipating the programme’s impact in Barbados and the region. Throughout the company’s history, Innotech has undertaken construction projects on a number of education related facilities in Barbados and across the region. Projects include the construction of the St. Gabriel’s School, the building of the new St. Ambrose Primary School, the St. Ann Hill School and the construction upgrade to the Sir Alistair McIntyre building at the
University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus - to name a few. Work is also currently underway on a large upgrade project at The Lodge School in St John. According to DaSilva:“The Lodge School is a special project. It is the third oldest secondary school on the island and has a lot of historical value. “We are working with the Barbados National Trust, the Education Project Implementation Unit and architect, Tony Brooks, to retain many of the old buildings as close as possible to their original design,” DaSilva informed. Other buildings at The Lodge School are being completely renovated, while some are being upgraded. This project
will be completed in the latter half of 2013. In addition, Innotech is constructing the new three-storey building at Collymore Rock, St Michael, to house the headquarters of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). Work on this project commenced in 2011 and is due for completion next year. By year-end, Innotech would also have successfully completed the construction upgrade of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines’ Community College. This European Union funded project has been a new and exciting experience for Innotech, with all departments adapting to working abroad. According to DaSilva:“The team has performed extremely well under pressure.”

More intense activities like paint ball day allows staff to form teams and strategically set out to, well, take out their frustrations on each other in a harmless and fun way. Then there are more casual activities such as themed lunch days in the office, where employees volunteer to prepare different styled dishes and everyone comes together to enjoy menu offerings. The team is preparing for its next family day in October, which should prove to be loads of fun as usual.

Each staff member is an invaluable asset to the company, so we do whatever we must to ensure their health and safety,” Arthur disclosed. While the company has never experienced any major “on-site” accidents throughout its 20 years in operation, minor accidents are reported and investigations carried out to determine if further training is needed or if corrective or preventative action is required. To better educate staff on health and safety procedures, Arthur and the management team have developed a health and safety manual. In addition, he has authored Your Health And Safety – a booklet which provides health and safety measures in numerous work-related areas, including how to handle power tools and hand tools, working near overhead electricity lines, scaffolding, working on roofs, fire prevention and waste disposal.

USUALLY, several construction projects are undertaken simultaneously by Innotech Services Limited. This means that the entire workforce must work assiduously to ensure each project receives its due attention. Construction director Andrew Adam is the one who makes sure all systems are in place so each project is completed on time; that each project is kept within budget; that there is enough human resources, and that up-to-date reports from all project staff are received on a regular basis. Each project helps to secure jobs for numerous skilled artisans, and the company’s first overseas assignment – the construction of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College Third Phase Expansion Project, has done the same. Adam explained: “All direct labour is from St Vincent and the Grenadines and our management team. It’s split 50/50 as we marry the experience of the company with that in St Vincent. The St Vincent team comprises labourers, carpenters, tilers, painters and electricians. We have also managed to source most of our subcontract resources and suppliers locally in St Vincent.” This overseas project which commenced in 2011 and is due for completion at year-end, comprises the expansion of existing buildings, construction of new teaching facilities, three new lecture halls, classrooms, teachers’ headquarters and administration areas along with the redevelopment of the infrastructure and external services.
