Thanks for our many blessings McBride Caribbean Ltd’s 25th anniversary message delivered by Ricardo Strickland, General Manager. AS McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED McBride celebrates the year of its silver anniversary, we give God thanks for the many blessings bestowed on it. The significance of this achievement must be contextualised with the popular notion that manufacturing is dying or dead in Barbados as well as research reflecting the failure of many companies within their first five years. It is worth noting that aerosol manufacturing is very capital intensive and McBride has been the largest aerosol manufacturer in the Caribbean for the last 20 years. McBride’s journey has not been without major challenges and setbacks, but it has survived and is well positioned with its new state of the art operation to take advantage of current and future opportunities.
Within highly competitive environments, McBride’s position and growth have been built on strong, quality and customer-centric brands – BOP, Beep, Super Suretox, GO! and the loyal support of customers at home in Barbados and 23 export markets in the Caribbean, Central and South America. With 85 per cent of its production exported, McBride is a net earner of valuable foreign exchange for the Barbados economy. The tendency on occasions such as these is to look back and reminisce about the past. In celebrating this milestone, reflection is necessary as is paying adequate homage to our predecessors who laid the foundation for what McBride is today. However, the future of McBride and its journey to other significant milestones must also be the focus at this time. Looking to the future, McBride’s growth will be led by exports to new markets and the development of new brands and products while
maintaining its core values and the highest quality and safety standards. This will enable McBride to enhance its contribution to national development through increased earnings of foreign exchange and generate value for its stakeholders. To McBride’s many stakeholders – shrewd and confident shareholders, supportive distribution partners and suppliers and, last but by no means least, our dedicated staff, both past and present, I express sincerest gratitude to you for your invaluable contribution to its development. In addition, the facilitation of the manufacturing sector by Government and its agencies has been greatly appreciated. With the continued support of customers and stakeholders, I’m extremely confident in McBride’s capacity to achieve its current and future business objectives. May God continue to bless McBride on its journey to achieve future successes and milestones.

SUNDAY SUN SPECIAL. 3
QUALITY AND RELIABILITY are among the many things McBride Caribbean Limited stands for. McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED is a wholly owned subsidiary of regional conglomerate Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL) and is the largest and leading manufacturer of aerosol products in the Caribbean. Established in 1989 under the name McBride-Ben (Caribbean) Limited, the plant began operation on August 28, 1989, in Thornbury Hill, Christ Church, and was then owned 50 per cent by McBride United Kingdom and 50 per cent by Ben Distributors. In 1993, the company suffered a short setback when the plant at Thornbury Hill was destroyed by fire.
GEL proceeded to buy Bayer’s factory (which was located not far away in Lowlands, Christ Church) as well as McBride United Kingdom’s shares to become full owner of the company. In September 1994, with a new name, McBride Caribbean Limited opened and began its operations at the facility in Lowlands, Christ Church. A second fire in 2007 also destroyed the then current plant and between 2007 and 2009, GEL had the plant rebuilt to improve upon the old design and implement state-of-the-art machinery. McBride Caribbean Limited, which
(GP)
employs 26 people, currently manufactures insecticides, insect repellents, disinfectant spray and air fresheners which it markets under the brand names BOP, Suretox, Beep and GO!. To ensure the highest quality, the products are reviewed by a toxicologist and tested by independent laboratories. These products are distributed in 24 markets (including Barbados) in the Caribbean, Central and South America, where they often enjoy market leadership. McBride also offers contract filling services to aerosol brand owners and is the largest aerosol manufacturer in the Caribbean.
AS McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED celebrates its silver anniversary, divisional manager John Taylor has expressed his appreciation to the company’s loyal consumers and particularly to distribution associates and partners whom he deemed crucial to McBride’s growth. “Our distributors have been absolutely key to the success of the growth of BOP and other McBride brands in the 23 markets across the Caribbean throughout the years. “We thank them for their JOHN TAYLOR (GP) efforts and look forward to continue working closely with them in the years to come,” Taylor said. He also expressed his gratitude to each member of staff for their efforts over the years in helping the business to grow and succeed. Taylor has “worn a number of hats” since joining the McBride team 19 years ago. His association began in 1995 when he was appointed managing director, a post he held for five years. He was named Chairman in 2000. As divisional manager, Taylor oversees the governance and strategy of the business operations of his division and keeps his eyes out for business opportunities to grow the manufacturing and services business in the division. He is of the view that, futuristically, “McBride is ideally placed to expand its markets in the wider Caribbean and Central America where per capita consumption of aerosol insecticides is high. “The other major opportunity for McBride is to expand its product range of aerosol insecticide and other pest control products,” Taylor noted.

MCBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED intends to focus more on growing its export market. (RC)
GOING FORWARD, McBride Caribbean Limited will be focused on increasing exports to new markets while pursuing growth in existing markets.” That’s the word from general manager, Ricardo Strickland, who also disclosed that focus would be placed “on developing new products under existing brands or developing new brands”. Speaking during a recent interview, Strickland, who has been employed with the company for the past nine years and has been general manager since 2009, also said that McBride Caribbean Limited’s growth strategy would include pursuing the acquisition of other aerosol brands and contract manufacturing. He disclosed that with McBride
Caribbean Limited exporting 85 per cent of its production to English, Dutch, French and Spanish Caribbean countries, with the exception of Puerto Rico, Cuba and the United States Virgin Islands, the company was making a significant contribution as a net foreign exchange earner.
The general manager said the company had witnessed improvements in sales volumes over the years and had seen marginal annual growth during the last four years that were the most challenging of the last decade. He noted: “We have grown as a business

during our lifespan with great emphasis on our export markets. However, this should not be construed that the local market is not critically important to us.” As McBride Caribbean Limited celebrates its 25th year in business, Strickland said he specially wanted to thank consumers, past and present staff, and the numerous stakeholders for their contribution, dedication and commitment. “On this our 25th anniversary, we want to express our appreciation to our loyal customers and supportive stakeholders for their contribution to McBride’s development. Such support will also be required in achieving future milestones,” he said.

AS A COMPANY, McBride takes best practice very seriously. (GP)
WHILE McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED uses chemicals in its manufacturing process it does not manufacture raw materials. As such, it is not “a chemical company” as sometimes referred to. McBride operates according to the British Aerosol Manufacturer’s Association standards and guidelines and is subjected to annual audits by an overseas independent auditor. Management also subjects the company’s
operations to an annual health and safety independent audit which is performed under the Barbados Safety And Health At Work Act and International Best Practice. General manager Ricardo Strickland said: “As a company, we seek to maintain the highest operational standards and we have continuously achieved excellent results in our audits. “We remain committed to excellence in all areas.”

McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITED’S Sales and Marketing Department can be considered the pulse of the company as it is the department which connects the products to the distributor, retailer and, ultimately, the consumer. Headed by sales and marketing manager Donna M. Branch, who joined the company in 2003, the team is further complemented by brand developers Ramona Grandison and Adrian Bowen with four and a half and two and a half years of service respectively. McBride’s products are currently sold in 24 markets, including Barbados, and these markets are divided between the two brand developers for effective relationship management

and execution of marketing strategies. The efficiency of each market is significantly strengthened by the direct support from the department’s brand developers, and Branch’s role is crucial to the department’s overall performance. Branch manages the daily operations and activities within the department, with emphasis on the development, execution and assessment of all sales and marketing strategies. Her role requires that she conduct several analysis on financial, technological and demographic factors that may affect present and future needs for the company’s markets, product mix and distribution systems. in the forefront of people’s minds. We also work to ensure we maintain strong business relationships with our long-standing distribution partners while seeking to further grow our overseas markets.” Branch explained that both Bowen and Grandison monitor the sales and marketing activities in their respective markets on a daily basis while assessing the competition and ensuring that McBride’s products are being well represented. They also
monitor sales trends, conduct research and propose future strategies in collaboration with Branch. Frequent travelling to the various markets to dialogue with distributors is therefore crucial to the company’s success. According to Branch: “McBride’s range of products have leading market share in most of its markets in the respective categories, and it is our intention to elevate this to a higher level.

WITH NEARLY 30 years’ experience in the aerosol industry, maintenance technician Wilfred Alleyne is a valuable asset to McBride Caribbean Ltd. He was previously employed by aerosol manufacturer Bayer (Caribbean) Limited at its Lowlands, Christ Church, facility for ten years. (a position he has held for 20 years). The wealth of knowledge gained over this 30-year period has made Alleyne instrumental to the training and development of the company’s operations personnel. As maintenance technician, Alleyne is responsible for the servicing and maintenance of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic equipment. He has been involved in numerous plant upgrade projects and has travelled overseas to commission new equipment for the company.
He acknowledged that the work was sometimes challenging but explained that he found it rewarding. He noted that there had been several changes over the years citing that cans, bottles and caps were no longer manufactured on-site and some aspects of the business had become computerised. Alleyne holds the view that “there will always be equipment to maintain. As a company, we will need to continue to move with the times”.

MAINTAINING health and safety is important to any business or residence. It’s no different at McBride Caribbean Limited. Health and safety measures are utmost in the minds of each member of staff but more so, in the minds of the engineering and facilities manager Prince Forde and his staff. The Engineering Department holds full responsibility for the maintenance of the plant and facility. This includes scheduled testing of safety equipment and safety procedures as well as general maintenance of the grounds, buildings and machinery. The focus of the department is to create a level of reliability by finding solutions to problems which may occur, being proactive in the process and ensuring safety systems are working as they should. “Where reactive maintenance is carried out, we find solutions and measures to reduce the occurrence of situations which would require this form of maintenance. “The Engineering Department is very important because as a company that manufactures products for sale, we cannot sell unless we have products to sell. My department keeps the machines running. The performance of the machines is one of the factors that directly impacts the financial performance of the company. If the machines aren’t running efficiently that means it cost more to produce the product. “The Engineering Department creates value within the structure of the company by maintaining a safe working environment for staff and ensuring that the machines are performing efficiently and are reliable,” Forde, who has been employed with Goddard Enterprises Limited for the past five years, said. Another of his primary responsibilities is that of scheduling preventative maintenance together with his team which includes maintenance technicians Barry Cumberbatch and Wilfred Alleyne and general workers Pauline Dottin and George Lorde. Forde is also Chairman of the company’s Health and Safety Committee.

(GP) THE QUALITY DEPARTMENT is staffed by two chemists: quality manager Toni Manning and quality assistant Crystal Chase who have been employed by the company for nine and five years respectively. The department has lead responsibility for developing the chemical formulations of new products and improving existing product offerings. The department, with input from a certified British toxicologist, approves the chemicals used on-site and establishes protocols for their handling, storage and disposal. This is of particular interest to members of the public who are rightly concerned about the relative safety of products as well as their impact on the environment.
Manning explained that each country has regulations that govern specific categories of consumer products. The department must ensure that goods comply with the requirements of regulatory agencies in the local and 23 export markets. Over the years, the company has worked to continuously improve its quality system. The quality manager is responsible for the overall management of this system which was developed to ensure that all company activities are performed in a manner that yields a product or service of consistent quality. The company contracts independent auditors to evaluate the system on an annual basis.

The production operation has improved considerably over the years and is currently a highly automated process due to the investments in new technologies. Dedicated staff makes up this department which has a record of having some of the most long-standing employees in the company. “Our production supervisor for example has been with the company from inception, while most of the production employees have been working at the company for an average of 15 years. “We have a very experienced team and each team member is very knowledgeable on production, quality and health and safety matters,” he added.
