SEATED: Dawood Pandor, Abdulhai Pandor and Ramon De Rosaryo. Standing, second row: Jason Newsam, Loretta Walker and Quennel Reece. Back row: Gregory Farnum and Kenroy Weekes. Inset are Leanne Harewood and Luther P. Goodman
FOUNDER OF Professional Engineering Services Ltd., (PESL) Abdulhai Pandor takes this opportunity of marking the 25th anniversary of the business, by first “giving thanks to Allah, without Whom nothing is possible.” He continues: “I appreciate the patience, love and support of my family, especially my son Dawood Pandor, who is an excellent engineer and principal consultant with the company. I am also happy to have nephews Tariq Pandor, Ayub and Umer Bakharia who are working in design and technical fields. “There are many people who I thank for their encouragement and help, especially in the early years, such as Fatima and Albert Eversley, Ayub Bakharia, Keith Rayside Sr., Louis Redman, Dr Don Blackman, the late Errol Walton Barrow, Sir Phillip Greaves, Elias Haloute and Lionel Craig, to name a few. “I appreciate all my clients over the years, large or small, and

am especially grateful for those who continue to give us repeat business and to recommend PESL to others. This helped us to continue working steadily through the years and reach the point of celebrating 25 years. I am humbled by the experience and filled with gratitude.” Abdulhai adds: “We at PESL are most grateful to those who have supported this 16-page 25th anniversary special feature in The NATION; and to all our staff, past and present.” Most important of all, as he looks to the future, he says: “I am extremely proud of the engineering achievements of my son Dawood, who is back home to offer his considerable international experience for the benefit of engineering in Barbados. I look forward to seeing how his passion for engineering, his vision and creativity, and his outstanding skills will take the firm forward in the coming years.”
DAWOOD PANDOR is a highly qualified and experienced civil and structural graduate engineer, who is a Principal Consultant with Professional Engineering Services Ltd., (PESL). He has worked on outstanding projects in various parts of the world, resulting in him being acclaimed and receiving prestigious awards. Just to mention two of the most impressive: he was one of a four-man design team that worked on the steelwork design and erection analysis for the cable net of the Millennium Dome in London, (now the O2 arena where celebrity concerts with performers such as Rihanna are staged and where Michael Jackson was to perform his last concert). Dawood was awarded the MacRobert Award by the Royal Academy of Engineers for this landmark project. He also worked on the world’s tallest buildings in Saudi Arabia, the Al Faisaliah complex and the Kingdom Tower. You could say that this young engineer established that the sky is the limit for him, early in his career. However, he loves his country, Barbados, and “was happy to come back home to work with my dad Abdulhai Pandor. We always got along well, and when I was a schoolboy I would go on site with him. This inspired me to study engineering. “However, we also grew into a relationship of adult friendship, appreciation and understanding and we collaborate well on projects. We are both able to give our best to whatever we are doing, along with everyone else on our team at PESL. We have an excellent team here at PESL, which produces quality designs and always aims to meet the requirements of our clients.” “I love Barbados. It is home, and I am very happy to be here and to be working in the company my dad established.” Dawood also points out that he had benefited from a Barbados Government scholarship in 1989 so he owed it to the country to return here and make a contribution. He did his BSc in Engineering at Imperial College, London, England; and his MSc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States. Dawood also won fellowships from the American Concrete Institute and the Organization of American States. DAWOOD PANDOR, BEng, Back in the SM, ACGI, CEng, MBAPE, Caribbean he

worked as a senior engineer in Trinidad and Tobago on public and private projects. He also worked as a project manager and engineer for Yorke Structures Limited there on several steel framed structures including the Waterfront Project. As an engineer for Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, UK, he worked on the Millennium Dome before spending a year in Saudi Arabia working on the Tower complexes. Across the water in New York, while working for Buro Happold/FTL there as design manager he was involved in major creative designs using unusual

fabric and tension elements, including the Zimmerili Amphitheatre. Dawood then worked as senior engineer for Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, UK, where he became involved in design projects such as the BBC Office Building (White City), the RAF Museum (Hendon) and the West London Academy (Ealing). His skills and abilities obviously make him an international professional who is not only following in his father’s footsteps, but blazing his own trail high above the conventional design trade experience. Any country or region would be lucky to have him, but Barbados is fortunate that he calls this island his beloved home and extends that loyalty to the Caribbean. Dawood is involved at PESL in a diverse range of projects such as The New Offices at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre and the Warrens Traffic Safety Improvement Project. In summation, he notes: “Our greatest asset is our staff, and I am privileged to work with such talented individuals at PESL.”
ABDULHAI PANDOR is the director and principal consultant of Professional Engineering Services Ltd. (PESL), a company he formed 25 years ago, with its offices first in Wellington Street, then Roebuck Street, Bridgetown. He is a graduate engineer with a BSc in Civil Engineering from the City University, London and achieved an MSc in Structural Engineering from Clemson University, South Carolina. He notes: “We have an excellent and highly qualified staff, and we have managed to employ more people as we expanded. However, succeeding in this company is not just

based on qualifications, but also on having the right character and attitudes. People who work with us need to have respect, be punctual, meet deadlines, work hard and smart, and give excellent quality service. “We also aim to offer the most economic price possible, without getting into overly aggressive competition, but respect other engineering and contracting firms as colleagues. Our consultants and engineers belong to local, regional and extra-regional professional organizations.” Abdulhai is involved with work related to environmental, solid waste, civil and structural design projects for PESL. His experience includes project management and design responsibilities for international banking agency projects throughout Barbados and the Caribbean. In this capacity he was head of the design team for the World Bank Rehabilitation programme. Abdulhai is project manager for the Barbados Road Network Infrastructure Improvement project and the Warrens Traffic Safety Improvement project. He was head of the civil and structural engineering design team for the Sherbourne complex (now Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre) including the conference hall, auditorium and examination hall; and PESL is now working on the extension and multilevel car park there. Previous highway projects include culverts and bridges for the World Bank project in Hothersal, Buccaneer Bay, Treasure Beach and Speightstown; and the World Bank Road
Rehabilitation project including part of Highway 2A, Highway 6, and Searles to Six Roads. Abdulhai was project manager for the Blue Orchids/Coral Mist hotels and has been involved in the structural engineering design of seven Chefette restaurants. He has also designed commercial complexes, and residences all over the island . Early in his career when he was senior engineer for the Rayside group of companies, he supervised infrastructural work at Arawak Cement plant, designed hot-mix asphalt and concrete mixes, and supervised road and car park construction. Before launching PESL Abdulhai worked as senior technical officer in the National Housing Corporation (NHC), where he designed and supervised road developments and low-income housing developments. He also prepared specifications for roadworks when he worked for the Ministry of Communication and Works and inspected storm water structures. It is impossible to list all of the projects that Abdulai and PESL have done engineering and/or project management for, but they dot the landscape of Barbados.
RAMON DE ROSAYRO is a principal consultant at Professional Engineering Services Ltd., (PESL), a Barbadian company he joined in 1998. He is currently involved in the design of roads, highways and other civil works projects, including the Adams Castle Development, Upton Development and the Warrens Traffic Safety Improvement Project. He is a chartered civil engineer with a BSc (Hons)
from the University of London. He first worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as assistant engineer and was attached to the Hunting Survey Corporation of Canada which carried out a physical resources survey of Sri Lanka using aerial photographs. One of his fondest memories is when he rescued a school under construction that was condemned because of structural defects. This was during his tenure in the Republic of Maldives, Ramon recalls: “I was able to save the school, because of the experience I had had when I worked on Charles F Broome Memorial school in Barbados. A. MOST PEOPLE are familiar with the work of contractors or builders, architects, and various types of workers who are involved in designing and erecting buildings, roadways, and implementing other types of structures. Few, however, except those in the indutsry know of the precise, creative, meticulous technical skills and talents that are used by our qualified engineers and technicians in creating the designs for new buildings, roadways, infrastructural development, and the analysis and surveys necessary for renovating and extending structures. Their work is essential for establishing and maintaining the strength of structures and roads, and to optimize durability against environmental hazards. The reality is that engineers apply science in order to benefit mankind.
