The Wise Men were gentiles or nonJews. More than likely, they came from countries like Iran or Iraq, Syria or Libya. In today’s world, there is little chance the Wise Men would be allowed to freely travel to and about the country of Israel. While all of us understand the need for greater security measures in this day and age, it would be quite appropriate to pray on this Solemnity for peace in our world and a greater tolerance of one another. Above all, let us pray that, in the words of Pope Francis, religion is never used to promote violence among people and nations.
mageEpiphany of Our Lord – The word “epiphany” means manifestation. When we think of “epiphany” we think primarily of the visit of the Wise Men to the Holy Family at Bethlehem. (There are two other “official” epiphanies in our Church. Do you remember what they are?)
P
ublix Ministry – I do my grocery shopping at Publix. When you ask an employee of Publix where something is, more often than not that employee will stop what they are doing and take you to the aisle and shelf where you can find that particular item. I like that about Publix. It’s one of the things that makes shopping there a pleasure. Our faith and our parish should operate in the same way. This Solemnity of the Epiphany reminds us that our faith must issue forth in action. We not only should be able to TELL others what we believe, but we should SHOW them what we believe by how we act. I pray that today and always we show others that we are not only knowledgeable about our faith, but that we generously and lovingly put that faith into practice. Imagine people saying: Nativity Parish…where worshipping and practicing our faith is a pleasure!!!

piphany Sunday is always a joyous time in the Church. The story of the Magi as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew is one with which we usually become familiar when we are young. This day is filled with symbolism; it is filled with stewardship. The prophet Isaiah perhaps more than any other of the prophets anticipated the coming of Christ. He foresaw details about the coming of the Messiah which are uncanny in their accuracy. It is almost as if Isaiah foresaw the glory of Christ’s Epiphany. “Rise up in splendor…Your light has come…Then shall you be radiant at what you see.” The light of Christ has shone and is shining upon us. However, we are to do more than just bask in it. We are to be “radiant at what we see.” This is the call to stewardship; we are to take that light, that Good News, and we are to share it and spread it. Biblical scholars are of the opinion that St. Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians (from which our Second Reading is drawn) during a time when he was under house arrest in Rome. Note that he was not in prison. At that time “house arrest” meant you could move easily around your house during the day under the watchful eyes of soldiers, but could not leave. At night you were chained to a soldier who slept next to you. Paul speaks of being a steward of God’s grace. You might say he realizes that he is not a prisoner of the Romans, but a “prisoner” of the Lord. He has felt and realized the light of Christ referenced by Isaiah, and he has spent his apostolic life as a disciple, as one who has indeed been a steward and shared the glory he has realized. The Apostle Luke provided us with a detailed accounting of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. The visit of the Magi would seem to have occurred some time, perhaps even months, after the Lord’s nativity. Their trek and visit is only mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew. Much has been written and surmised in relation to who they were, and the significance of their journey and visit.
these Magi were gentiles. We need to respond to this revelation, just as the Magi did. They could have merely admired the glorious star which they saw in the sky and philosophized as to what it was and what it meant. However, they did more than that. They acted. We, too, are called to act through stewardship. We are called to more than just follow the Light of Christ. We are called to respond and to act and to do something to show that we are indeed disciples. That would make us, too, wise. Epiphany Blessing Chalk
Epiphany is the traditional day for blessing homes and other buildings by marking the lintels of doorways with chalk. The markings commemorate the three Magi. The markings for 2016 are 20 + C + M + B + 16. These letters represent the three initials of the Magi’s names written between the numbers of the year separated by four crosses. They are also the Latin abbreviation for “Christus mansionem benedicat,” For us as stewards it is well to take note of two important which means “Christ blesses this house.” aspects of this story. When Jesus was born, it was first revealed to humble and plain shepherds. The revelation for Blessed chalk will be available after Masses on Sunday, those considered more honorable and learned, namely, the January 3, in the Social Hall. Magi, occurred much later. Another perspective is that Jesus came to the poor first, and then the rich. The point is that He came and comes to everyone, each one of us as well. An “Epiphany” is, as normally used, a revelation. The revelation in this case, for us, and for the Magi, is the realization not only of the divinity of the Lord, but also the fact that Jesus came as the Savior of all. Those first shepherds who approached and worshiped Jesus were Jews;

A Stranger You Welcomed Me
In the Gospel of Matthew (25:35) tells his disciples, "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." The call to welcome the stranger plays an important role in the lives of faithful Christians and has a particularly central place for those of us who work in the migration field. The migrant, who moves from one country to another is truly a stranger in the midst. Often unfamiliar with the local tongue of the new country, not to mention its customs, the migrant needs the Virginia Lascera, Rosa Valentin, Richard Byerly, Natalie support of local communities so that she can better adjust to Lizanich her new surroundings. l Domingo de Epifanía siempre es un momento de alegría en la Iglesia.
