PA ThankYou – I am deeply grateful to all who made a gift to the Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA). I recognize that every gift is a sacrifice. Your sacrifice not only helps the Catholics from throughout the five counties that make up our diocese, but it also helps those here at Nativity Parish. If you have not yet made your sacrificial gift to APA, envelopes are available throughout the Church on the windowsills and can be put in the offertory collection. May God bless you for your generosity and kindness to APA. atholic Schools Week – A special word of thanks goes to Mr. Yevich the principal of Nativity Catholic School, our school teachers / administrators / staff, the students, and the parents who made our Catholic Schools Week celebration so special. Nativity Catholic School has much to celebrate and even more to be proud of.
C
onfirmation – Congratulations and best wishes to the teens and adults who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this past Thursday. As you celebrate this milestone, may you continue to know God’s love and the blessed outpouring of the Holy Spirit each and every day of your lives.

ent 2016 – The Season of Lent is a time to journey with the Lord in a more focused way. Catholics are encouraged to fast and abstain during this season. The basic regulations for fasting and abstaining are listed in this bulletin. But maybe there are other, more creative ways to grow in our relationship with the Lord and each other. I am reading a book entitled “Reclaiming Conversation” written by Sherry Turkle. It focuses on the place / priority that we give to social media / electronic devices. While you may not want to read the entire book, Sherry Turkle offers a Ted talk on the issue that she did in 2012 – “Connected, but Alone.” I think it would be a great thing for all family members to watch and discuss. Maybe our Lenten sacrifice will be limiting to some degree our use of social media / electronic devices and recover the art of conversation in our families; creating more time / space for reading scripture; promoting a sense of solitude where we can meet Jesus in our personal prayer.

ou might say today’s Scripture readings are filled with three important facets of stewardship — humility, discipleship, and the grace and presence of God. Holy Scripture has messages and meaning for us at every Mass, but we need to take particular note of the implications in today’s readings. The First Reading from the prophet Isaiah relates how Isaiah personally responded to the calling he received from God. His initial reaction was one of unworthiness and humility: “I am a man of unclean lips.” In other words, Isaiah is saying, “I cannot serve you God for I am a sinner.” However, when the Lord calls someone, that call is accompanied by the strength and presence of God to allow that sinner, including all of us who are sinners as well, to carry out the Lord’s will. God tells Isaiah, “Your wickedness is removed; your sin purged.” Isaiah responds in the same way we are expected to answer: “Here I am; send me.” Are we prepared in our humility and knowledge of our own weaknesses to take a similar risk, to trust in God? St. Paul seems to reflect the same reticence found in Isaiah, when Paul says in the Second Reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians, “For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle.” Those of us who have become familiar with Paul throughout our lives because of his wonderful letters, which we hear most often in the Second Readings, probably have a similar reaction to Paul’s sense of being undeserving. We know how worthy Paul really is nonetheless. However, just as Isaiah comes to a revelation relating to his calling, Paul, too, recognizes from where his strength can be drawn. Paul exclaims, “But by the grace of God I am what I am.” St. Paul was converted; he was a changed man, forgiven, cleansed, and full of love which at one time was hate. Paul knew this was not his own accomplishment, but it was owing to the presence of God within him. There is a line in an old hymn which goes, “You ask me how I know He lives; He lives; He lives inside my heart.” Once we reach that same conclusion, we can be prepared to look past our own value to the power and resolve God makes available to each of us. Of course, the feeling that someone is of no value is equally telling in the words of St. Peter in today’s Gospel from St. Luke: “Depart from me Lord for I am a sinful man.” Jesus reacts to Peter’s exclamation by saying “Do not be afraid.” As is normally the case with Holy Scripture and with things the Lord says and does, there is a significant meaning here we may miss. Jesus is trying to inform Peter and us that He wants to relate to us on the principle of love, not the principle of fear. Our conclusion is that though we are not worthy, the Lord loves us. Though we think we may be unable to properly respond to Jesus’ call to us, the truth is that with God’s help not only can we take positive action, but that we can know that God will not let us fail. The Lord will show us the way, but we must be willing to take those first steps ourselves.

www.nativitycatholicchurch.org Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence
The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Reflexión de las Escrituras Is 6, 12A, 38; Salmo 138: 15, 78; 1 Corintios 15: 111; Lc 5: 111
S
